This is apparently a common enough thing from what I've seen on line, but every solution I find involves the person having used a profile switcher or their calender to signify being unavailable. I do not use either type of program. I almost never silence my phone. (in the movie theater or similar, yes, but otherwise never) Does anyone have any idea what it could be? It;s only been happening since the OTA update to .217 ICS. It's getting thoroughly aggravating missing calls and texts, as I'm sure you can imagine... Thank you to anyone with ideas/suggestions.
Check your settings in both the system settings as well as each individual app. I think after the update the messaging app is set to silent by default, or at least the vibrate is turned off.
If the system is messed up I recommend that everyone install the ota factory reset. Clearing out your old GB data and letting the ICS run "fresh" solves a lot of problems.

Could it be a Smart Actions setting?
Settings are all fine yet it does randomly put itself on silent mode no vibration and you have to turn it back to vibration via settings volume rocker just puts it back on silent....

If it keeps happening tomorrow, I will do a full factory reset. Hoping I won't have to though. It's a pain in the rear to restore everything... It isn't a smart action thing because I have that app frozen, good thought though. Thank you all for the responses.
I tried a fr from recovery menu never froze apps nor rooted this d4 didn't help...

Update
I've found that it is only doing it with phone calls now. I cannot find a setting in the phone app or the system settings that is set to mute, but it keeps happening. Also, after using the lock screen to unmute it, I have to turn up the volume manually. The lock screen thing only bumps it up to the minimum volume level... Anything else come to mind before i do a full FR? I'd really rather avoid it if I can... Thanks again.
Now I've got one worse. Did a FR, no go. Tried to update to Eclipse, and messed it up. Had to .sbf back to factory. EVEN AFTER the .sbf, still having the same issue with it muting while recieving a call.... (i.e. goes on vibrate instead of ringing....) Any ideas ANYONE???!!?!?!?
Honestly, this sounds like a hardware issue to me. If I understand correctly, it sounds like the phone keeps going to silent (or vibrate after ICS)?
My guess after all your software troubleshooting is that your volume down key is either physically or electronically damaged, and periodically decreases itself. You might want to try remapping the volume button or something to see if that solves the problem. Of course, after that you don't have any volume buttons, which stink.
Aside, the physical buttons (power, volume) on the D4 really stink. They are very mushy and almost flush with the case, poor design if you ask me.
That thought crossed my mind also, but it only happens on an incoming call, and I can adjust the volume up and down in every app. If I don't receive a call all day, there is no problem, texts & emails work fine. I've even had a friend sit with me and text me (sound worked) then call me (muted as it received the call) and all it did was vibrate, no ringtone. I have who is it and thought it might be that, but un-installed it and no change... I'm totally out of ideas...
Thank you for the ideas, unfortunately nothing has worked so far. Any further ideas will be much appreciated. Thanks again.
Finally figured it out. Apparently it had to do with some stetting that Who Is It made. I had it set to announce the caller, which apparently doesn't work now. When I un-installed who is it nothing changed, so I re-installed it and on a whim disabled the announce feature, and it's been ringing fine since. I believe it was some sort of setting because after disabling the announcement, I un-installed who is it again, and the phone would ring without a problem. No Idea what setting it was. Thanks to veryone for the help.
It worked when I first booted up. After a few hours it quit. I did a factory reset, and the same thing happened. I then went through my running apps and turned them off until none were running except the system apps. Still didn't work.
Anyone else have this happen that can suggest a fix? If I have to reset and install apps one by one, how do I do that, since on signing into Google the apps auto load

To fix auto load, you can change the system setting to not backup apps; it's in Settings > Backup & reset. I thought upon initial Google account sign in you could switch that setting off too, and that prevents the apps from auto-installing. I have backup turned off because on previous devices and versions of Android it was contributing to battery drain.

I did what you suggested, adding single apps and confirming the ambient function worked. Found an app that seemed to be the cause, and upon uninstalling it the ambient function came on line. However, about a half hour later, it stopped working again. Spent over an hour on the phone with Moto, and they figured out that ambient doesn't respond unless the phone has been asleep more than 10 seconds. That seemed to work for me. So I did my 4th reset/install of the day, and again, it worked for a while, even with all my apps (including the one that seemed to be the cause in the first place). And then, it stopped again.
I searched, and one suggestion was that ambient won't work unless you have a locked screen. I usually don't use a lock, but what the hey, I'll try it. Set up a pattern unlock and (wait for it.........).
Nope.
I'm stumped.......
Mine seems to stop displaying the ambient as well. It will display a few times initially and then stops. I don't know if it extends its sleep period after every interval or not. Also seems like if you lift up your phone to look at your ambient notifications, that disables any repeat display too
So, over the last few weeks I've found that my P20 Pro vibrates for no (known reason), every now and again. Usually multiple times per day.
I've tried turning it off and back on, killing the apps, checking for updates, turning notifications off on most apps.
Has anyone had a similar problem and /or has any way of diagnosing or fixing it?
I have experienced the same thing, so you're not totally alone if that helps. I haven't found the cause yet either. I suspect it might be WiFi+ vibrating when the source switches back and forth so it'll happen in stints for me.
i have the same thing and i think i might found the reason, i have some muted WhatsApp chat groups and it seems like that every now and then when i get messages in these groups my phone vibrates although i muted them . There is no notification but a short vibration.
Another thing that bothers me more is when receiving an whats app message my phone vibrates once short and after that the way i set it up in the settings...
I begin to get it after an update. hope to see a solution soon.
No
I believe I've found the cause and solution to the Huawei mate 20 pro random vibrations.
I installed a notification logger from the play store and found that it was logging notifications of repetitive image downloads completing that lined up with every buzz.
If you go into settings, apps and choose to see system apps in the menu, you can force close the download and download manager apps. If you then clear the data and cache from each, you should find the phantom notifications stop.
I haven't had one in days now, and it was all the time.
I hope this is of help.
This happens to me a lot. Its mainly due to voice recognition thinking I'm am speaking to the phone. It happens randomly when watching TV, at work on even in the train. There's no specific key work that triggers it,. It happens at random. This is my issue with the random vibration but your could be a different reason although

Mine was definitely the download manager continuously redownloading Google photos images. Force stop, clear data, clear cache of the download and download manager system apps and mine has been fine now for a week. Try it!
Had the same issue months ago. Cleaning cache and data of stock download manager app solved it for me.
Mine started doing same yesterday ?
I have the mate 20 pro, and it's just started randomly vibrating with no notification
So my phone is now starting to randomly vibrate like bursts of short vibrations that last a while, but there's no notifications or anything? I don't know how to find the "download manager" to check if it's that. I'm not sure which apps to force stop. It's really annoying though.
Do you use Textra? Happened to my wife's s8 and she just uninstalled then reinstalled Textra to make the problem go away.
I have cleared the download manager and everything else several times, but it only works for few days even hours and starts again. I'm not sure if it activities itself again after I download something, but nevertheless, this just shouldn't happen. How can I disable download manager permanently (or preferably just the vibrations, as I assume DM is there for a reason)
Had the same issue. No problem from textra, for me it was google drive. I uninstalled it, cleared cahe and data and I am now using OneDrive. I haven't experienced any random vibrations since then.
Mate 20 X had similar issue after EMUI 9.1 upgrade and turned out to be contacts sync system app constantly trying to sync contacts. Force stop and cleared data and all good now.
I have the same issue on regular mate 20 since the last software update to EMUI 9.1.0. All the suggested solutions here did not resolve the issue. If someone has more suggestions please share
I fixed it. It's a system application called "Contacts Sync" disabling it solved the issue for me.
Settings > apps > show system processes > search for Contacts Sync > disable and force close it

This didnt work for me, but i found another solution. I stopped almost all apps from autostart. except email and messangers. that immediately solved the issue and the phone boots much faster as well, nice sideeffect
You need to go into battery usage and then click on the individual app, then app launch.
I hope that helps

I just noticed this on my mate 20x on 9.1 on vibrate mode. Did your solution permanently resolve this issue or do you have to do it multiple times or after restarts?

Yes it did. I force close it and disabled it from app settings. Never came back
I am finding that my apps that send notifications, specifically that I send through LIghtflow, are either not notifying, or doing so 30 min. to an hour late.
I am also finding that installing as well as uninstalling apps are quite slow.
POwer saver is not on; battery optimization is not on for the offending apps; they are set to run in the background.
Anyone else experiencing this? Or any suggestions?
Regarding the slow downloads, I am finding the download finishes (according to the status bars, etc), but it then goes into a state of Install Pending. Can't find anything on that.
For anyone who cares, I have it resolved for the time being.
After 2 factory resets, I remembered back to the days i used to root my phones, and remembered that one strongly recommended task in that process was to delete cache.
So I did a final factory reset and deleted the cache also and all seems to be good.
When this crops up again I will try the cache delete w/o a factory reset and see how it goes.
Not getting much help here but I'll keep this thread upgraded.
It is again not working right. Lightroom is either not notifying or it's doing it 30 minutes late.
Play store downloads but then doesn't install for a period of time.
I'm beginning to think something is wrong with the phone.
This thing is driving me nuts. Following is what's going on, and have seen:
I've gone through 4 factory resets. All works find at first. Having decided that maybe there is an app interfering, I installed an app or two, tested, repeat...with delays between repeats. All seems fine.
But then late into the second day, w/o any installs, I goes haywire again. Symptoms are:
I use DGT GTD for my ToDo list. First thing I will notice is that when I add a new task, it will NOT show up in the widget list, and at the same time it stops notifications.
All apps stop sending notifications to Lightflow...or LIghtflow does not recognize the notifications. Not sure which is the case.
When add a new app on the Play Store, it downloads as quick as normal, but then it takes forever to install.
I installed AVAST, and checked for viruses. Came back clean.
I suspect it could be a phone problem. My Mate 9 works fine right now, with all the same apps. But, when a factory reset results in it working (at least during the short time a tech would evaluate), the phone can't be exchanged.
If anyone has any thoughts. I'm all ears. I'll keep posting, hopefully, ultimately, with a resolution. Maybe it'll help someone.
Is anyone having issues with their notifications not coming through, or coming in super late, or having the same notifications coming up over and over? I'm expecting all three problems, it seems to be happening with every app for me except for calls and text. I factory reset the phone but that didn't fix the issue. If I restart the phone, then all my notifications that haven't physically gone into the app to check start pouring in. No idea what could be causing the issue and it's really starting to piss me off. I have already sent my phone in for repair cause my LTE data stopped working for no reason. I don't think both issues are related as I do have LTE data after they replaced some part.
Would appreciate if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks.

I had notification delays with gmail app, fixed it by turning off battery optimization for this specific app.

Some people may have battery saver on and this may cause late notifications. Also check in settings "auto sync", under accounts. I did have some late notifications issue with Gmail app and do know battery optimization usually is the cause, but it went away in couple of days after I bought the phone.
Thank you for the suggestions. I ended up turning on high performance mode. Let's see if that helps.

How'd this work out for you? This phone is horrible for notifications for me. It constantly doesn't send them until I actually pick up my phone, then suddenly I'll get 5-10 notifications at once. I've turned off EVERY bit of power saving that I can find. I only run in high performance mode 24/7 with all adaptive battery, power optimization, auto app sleep, etc turned completely off. I've also tried disabling all power saving and sleep in the specific app pages as well. I need to be more observant, but I think this is mostly with push notifications (ex, my 2FA app for work) rather than apps with timers to check for updates occasionally. I also have an issue with my wifi disconnecting while the screen is off sometimes which is highly annoying since my home presence detection is based on my phone being on the wifi, though last time it started doing that a reboot fixed it.
Unfortunately, a search proves that this is a widespread issue. At this point I've pretty much given up on this phone and am looking to replace it as soon as I find a suitable alternative. I'm just curious if it's a Samsung issue or a Pie issue that will occur on other phones as well.

Seems to be a general issue with android. Mine have gotten better recently. In addition to turning off battery optimization for any apps I want notifications for, i have done the following:
1. Wiped cache (under settings/app/storage), then rebooted into recovery mode and wiped the cache partition.
2. Gone into the setting and made sure apps I want notifications for are allowed to run in the background (settings/apps/select app for notifications/battery).
3. Allowed to run in background when on mobile networks (settings/apps/select app/mobile data/Allow Background Data Usage.
4. Gone into messages/settings/more settings/push message/changed toggle from "Prompt" to "Always".
Hope that helps.

Thanks, I'll give some of those a try. I also got a VZW update with the May security patch among other things right after I posted that, so we'll see if that helps at all also.

It's gotten better for me. I enabled high performance mode but I had to keep going in and checking it a couple days after still even though it was enabled. Been a couple weeks now and the notifications I was missing before all seems to be coming in fine now. Time will tell though I guess lol
Are you also having trouble with apps updating? That was another problem I was having where I'd see apps needing to update, I'd start "update all" one app would download and then get stuck at 99% and it would just stay like that for about 40mins and prevent the other apps from updating. Then finally when it would finish the next one would do the same. It would literally take hours upon hours for 12 apps to update when it should only take a couple mins. That issue seems to be fixed for me now too.
