Hi everyone,
Please note that this post is only for users who assume using their phone without GMS, like me. I know this is a little tricky in the beginning, but after few months without Google I don't miss it anymore. Also, i'm french so I give you my apologies if there are any mistakes.
So, why spending your time to install GMS if you can deal without ?
First, you have to know that lot of apps aren't developped in AppGallery, so you need to install an alternative appstore. My suggest is "Aurora Store", which is based on PlayStore API :
AuroraOSS
auroraoss.com
Also, it's really important for you to know how notifications works with this device.
Actually, there is two types of notifications services :
- If you install an app with AppGallery, notifications should works perfectly because your app was developped to be compatible with HMS Core (it's like GMS, but by Huawei).
- Sadly, if an app isn't available in AppGallery, you have to install it with Aurora, and as I said it's an alternative playstore so this app will use firebase notifications system (the Google one, based on GMS). Then, notifications shouldn't works. This is why I suggest you to always search your app with AppGallery first to ensure more stability.
So how can we get notifications back for this kind of GMS-based apps ? Simply by installing MicroG services.
Please note that you have to install MicroG before installing any GMS-based apps, otherwise notifications doesn't works.
- First, go to this website and download then install "Services core" and "Services Framework Proxy" on your device :
Download - microG Project
- Open "MicroG Settings" app, choose "Self-Check" and make sure than all permissions granted are checked :
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
- Finally, go to "Cloud Messaging" and ensure "Receive push notifications" is checked. Status must show "Connected since...", if it doesn't, restart your phone, and uncheck and check again "Receive push notifications".
Now, everytime you'll install an application from Aurora Store, it'll shown on Cloud Messaging menu, like this :
So, now we can both use HMS and GMS notifications dependly of the way you install an application.
Here is a list of Google replacement applications I use, which are very usefull in my point of view (sometimes better than the Google ones !) :
- GPS : Google Maps works with my device, but I can't use with a Google account. I don't matter about that. You can also use Waze instead of Google Maps, or Petal Maps (developped by Huawei).
- Mail : I use Outlook instead of Gmail. Sadly, I can't synchronize my gmail account with Outlook, so I decided to make an outlook account ([email protected]), and make gmail redirect all my mails here. You can also synchronize your Outlook account with Google if you want to send mails with your gmail adressee :
How to add a Gmail account to Outlook.com
Have a Google mail account but you'd rather avoid using their web client? Why not add it to Outlook.com?
www.windowscentral.com
- Browser : Opera is really better i think because of addsblock integrated and VPN function... You can use Opera for Windows (or Mac) to import all your Chrome settings (like stored passwords) and then synchronize it with your Opera app mobile.
- Cloud : I use the Huawei's one instead of Drive, simply.
And that's all.
Who said that you can't live without Google ? Not me, in any case.
I hope this thread will help somebody in this forum.
HMS only here (I have not even bothered with MicroG) and my Gmail emails sync just fine using Outlook or Blackberry Hub?
Well, mine won't sync with Gmail even with or without MicroG, I don't know why. But now I don't use my Gmail account anymore and it's better like this. Too much Google in this world !

This is the best news i read today
Nice.
I'll try on Mate40 pro, to see if I can receive push notifications on Yahoo mail app.
- For Yahoo and Gmail accounts I receive push notifications on native mail app (works fine).
- If you want to use GMaps with Gmail login, you can use Ourplay, it works fine too.
LE: I can confirm that it works on Yahoo mail, I start to received push notifications for my mails after I reinstalled the app.

Hello. Quick question about syncing facebook profile pictures to contacts: has anyone had success with this? I tried using SyncMyPix, but it didn't work. It says it retrieves the pictures, but I think there may be a problem with my contacts that won't allow the app to sync. I also tried the Facebook app, but I couldn't figure out how it works. Does anyone have any suggestions for either of these problems, or maybe another app that works well? Thanks in advance!
I've been wondering the same thing! Can't get the facebook app to work and have tried several third party programs but none seem to get the job done. I read somewhere that another android user (droid x?) was having problems but found a fix by deleting facebook app, removing all her contacts (especially gmail ones), then redownloaded the facebook app and allowed syncing, then added her contacts. Supposedly this worked for her but I have not tried it. I would love to know how to sync facebook pictures with contacts.
In the market you can find an app.called "SyncMyPix". This will do the magic for you in pulling Facebook pictures down for your contacts. Free app, give it a try and report back some results.

He said in the OP, that it didn't work..
The Facebook app "androgeny" worked great for me to sync my pics to my Google contacts, had no issues at all, thought it was very straight-forward. Plus, you can manually specify mappings as needed.
Ok, so I searched for androgeny, couldn't find it in the market (also searched it as two words and spelling genie, couldn't find either). Also, unless I'm mistaken my contacts aren't Google contacts, I don't use Gmail nor are my contacts synced to any of my email accounts.
I tried syncing pictures again using SyncMyPix, now I have a few more specific details. The results aren't listed as errors, but as not found. I tried manually linking, and it gives me this message "This contact is read-only and can not be linked". I tried copying a contact to the phone, but it still gives the same message.
The idea of deleting apps and contacts seems kind of cumbersome, any suggestions on an easy method of storing contacts somewhere to reload them in order to try the method mentioned above?

I agree, the process sounds very cumbersome which is why I haven't tried it. I'm thinking that Facebook has recently changed picture-saving permissions for mobile apps because I can't save pics (captivate) and neither can my wife (iphone) so maybe that's where the problem lies.
SyncMyPix would perfect for me. Thanks for the suggestion.
I was able to sync all of my facebook contacts without any extra app using the jh2 build. Not sure if it is something they added in this build or if it is in the stock build, but under the sync settings when I added facebook, at the end of the wizard, it asked what contacts I wanted to sync.
I ended just syncing all contacts and displaying just ones with phone numbers. Now facebook pics and numbers are in my contacts.

I'm happy to note that I got Syncmypix to work! I was getting the read-only error as well, and in order to circumvent this problem all you have to do is the following:
1. Export all your contacts to SD card
2. Go to gmail and click contacts
3. Under more actions, click import
4. Import the vcf file with all your contacts
5. Then on your phone go to Contacts > Settings > Display Options and uncheck phone and sim. Make sure the google account that you imported all your contacts to is checked.
6. Then sync your gmail contacts (Contacts > Settings > More > Accounts > gmail account > Sync Contacts
And voila! your contacts are no longer read-only. Go back into the syncmypix app and watch as it magically syncs all your friends pictures to contacts
This looks like a great idea! However, I can't quite figure out the gmail import step. Are you using the gmail app? If so, then I can't find it through the app. I tried looking on the website through my phone also, but I still couldn't figure out how to do that.
Thanks for your help so far!

I can't find gmail contacts through the app or the browser. I guess it must be done through the computer. The .vcf file is really tiny so you should be able to send it through email and save to your computer. Here's a pic to help you find contacts in Gmail on your pc

I got FB working after a factory reset. It worked perfect.
So, I've tried pretty much everything I can think of at this point. I did get all of my contacts to sync to gmail, and then linked them with my phone contacts easily enough. I tried running SyncMyPix, still no luck. Then I tried turning the sync facebook account setting under Contacts>Settings>Accounts, but that didn't do anything (not sure if it's even supposed to). Next, I uninstalled both the facebook app and SyncMyPix, restarted my phone, reinstalled both apps but still no luck. I can manually link the contacts now (Thanks for that!), but no magical syncing. If anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.
I did it straight from the Android Sync menu.

Have you made any modifications to your phone (root, delete AT&T apps, etc)?

I'm having the same problem. If I manually link each profile it will check if there needs an update but it is not matching fb profiles to my contacts, even if it has their first and last name.
Might give SyncBook a try.
It worked for me initially however it doesn't seem to be copying down any new photos (even though I tell it to overwrite old ones).
So the problem with importing the contacts with gmail and then only displaying the gmail ones is that when you text message, the auto fill in contact displays the name from the sim and the Gmail list. Any ways around this? I can't figure out a way to delete all contacts on sim
facebook
i have over 2500 friends and the android facebook app with the latest build well not load my friends it tells me my list is to large but it worked fine under last build and phone unrooted! any one with the same problem.
Hi to All,
I'm a newbie both to forum and to android and am finding the new operating system
frustrating.
I need to sync my work Outlook Exchange email and calendar. I've managed to receive, send and access my emails (thought the filing structure could be a whole lot better) and sync my contacts. My problem is that I cannot get my work calendar to work/sync with my Galaxy S even though my handset is set to sync contacts, it's driving me mad.
I have tried "touchdown" and "K9" mail handlers without success.
As a convert from iphone, which worked perfectly, I'm beginning to regret my decision.
Does anyone know if this is a problem with android or can offer any advice.
I should mention that I don't understand the whole google mail thing, even though I have a account.
Also, i have tried and am very fed up with resetting to factory defaults in attempts to resolve my issue.
Thanks in advance.
It looks to me that the settings are correct, have you got that calendar showing? Settings, agenda's, select the work calendar.

Thanks for your reply weirder,
I should have mentioned (!) that that when I try to launch calendar I get the message
"sorry, the application calendar storage (process com.android.calendar) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" with the only option to force close.
Presumably, when you say "Settings, agenda's, select the work calendar", I would only get these options if I could launch calendar?
Thanks
I would really appreciate some help here.
Does anyone else have issues with the calendar crashing or sync with outlook calendar.
Like many others, I really like this handset and am desperately hoping that samsung see fit to address the issues that spoil an otherwise superb product.
I want the new Tab when it's released in the uk, but am worried I'll have more of the same silly issues
I've not long changed from 2.1 to 2.2 andriod on my SGS. Ths standard exchange sync workd for me along with touchdown, i even had K9mail running as well until I sussed that I could use the phones exchange, and mainly used touchdown for tasks and calendar. TD calendar allows you to add a catogory.
2.2 is also working well for me i'm even using the 'push' hotmail setting on an exchange account.
Sorry it dosn't help you out though.
Well, I have nearly the same problem!
I have an own server running with Zarafa + Z-push. I can sync my contacts and mails without any problems, but my calender is unsynct. The only difference is, that I can use my phones calender and don't get a FC.
I played around a bit yesterday an found out something interesting.
Thx to adirtymonkey for the tip with touchdown.
Whe a use touchdown I can sync everything without any problems as long as I use Touchdown to manage the calendar and so on. Unfortunately the stock calendar ist empty. Contacs are visible in both, stock and touchdown. I recognized, that I can chose to insert new contacts either in phone, sim, goggle, business or touchdown. New calender entries can only go to own calender or google. Here is the problem, there is just the exchange (business) calender missing i think!
Before playing around with zarafa and z-push over Active sync I tried to use a SyncML client with egroupware. Here I hand a similar problem. Beside my business (exchange) account, it seemed that the syncML client (synthesis) made another accout and wanted to sync to this one. Trying to create a new account gave me alwas a FC, deleting synthesis helped to recover the problem.
Btw, I'm using JPC firmware atm. I will try JM7 these days.

You are right, its the settings in the calendar app.
FC isnt a good thing. Does it "Force close" if you remove the synchronisation to that exchange server? Or only if you got the sync enabled?
Could be there is a problem in there.
Dustymil59,
You are not alone, I experience the same issue in the past.
What I did to over come this (don't guarantee this will work, but at least it works for me)
I usually do this first time right after I flash my firmware and rooted, so you may need to consider to enter recovery mode and clear all user setting before you start this.
1. Setup one account one after the other.
Do not setup google and exchange at one go, and let the 2 accounts sync back to back.
Go to Settings > Account and Sync > Add Account.
2.I usually setup google account first (for market access), but I will only allow contact and gmail sync from google. I have calendar and picasa web sync disabled. Allow gmail and contact sync complete the run. You may also check that all your google contacts sync to your phone before move the step #3.
3. Setup exchange account after #2, the objective is to allow first Exchange sync without any issue. For the first timem allow only sync for 1 day (do not select even 3 days). And allow your exchange first sync run until it finish. (the sync duration vary, I have more than 3000 calendar events, my first sync takes around 30 min to complete).
My Setting > "Push", Sync for 1 day, sync contact, sync calendar (you can change the setting here after the first sync is completed)
4. While exchange sync is running, let the phone idle, do not leave the add account sync and do not attempt to on calendar while exchange calendar doing the first sync, high chance that you will experience force close and the sync will be halted.
5. To confirm the exchange calendar has been sync down without opening calendar, download agenda widget, pull it out at the desktop, configure it to show your exchange calendar by the "calendars" tab (do not touch on "Manage calendar" option in agenda widget setting too, FC is expected during your first exchange calendar sync)

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
You should see all your category at this tab before all the sync complete
PS: It's not that your calendar will not sync, but it will be come harder to get the entire calendar after the first attempt failed.
From my experience, I got the entire calendar sync down 1 week after my first attempt failed, that was because I leave my phone idle over the weekend.
PS again: Notice the email program allow you to setup a name (which is optional) at the end of the email setup, try to stick with the same name, else SGS will create multiple name in Agenda Widget and at the end confuse you yourself.
Let me know the step above helps.

my calendar has the following setup which i suspect makes the calendar sync tends to fail.
1. multiple repeated event (like every month end, need to have month reports preparation, weekly meeting and etc) with no end date
2. add in chinese lunar calendar as secondary calendar and have repeated event on that calendar
3. > 3,000 events (close to 4,000 now) within the last 2 years.
So you can see the amount of data sync is a lot.
Hi,
I have experienced a strange syncing behavior:
It does sync only in one direction: downwards.
If I make a new item in the calendar on my destop PC, it comes to my phone "immediately".
But if I make an appointment on the phone (and of course I choose the exchange calendar for the place), it won't show up on my desktop. I tried to sync manually, with Outlook running or closed, but no success, the appointment remains only on my phone...
Therefore this syncing method is totally useless for me...
firmware that you are using?
I'm trying how to figure out how I can permanently log out of Google Chat (not appear idle) or at least have the option to stay invisible. Ever since I upgraded to the Moto X, I get the following notification on the left bar of my gmail:
"Oops! You are not invisible because you're logged into Google Talk from another client, device, or location that doesn't support invisibility."
Previous suggestions (with other android phones) has shown that I can simply disable the 'Talk' app. However, that particular app does not appear on the Moto X. I've also tried disabling the 'Hangouts' app, yet I still appear idle even when I sign out.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Do you have GMail open on a desktop or Google+? You might be showing idle since you'd be logged in on your browser then.
Even when I'm logged out on my desktop, I still appear idle (yellow) on a colleagues computer. I guess my bigger issue is that prior to getting the Moto X - I never had to log out, as I could stay invisible.
Perhaps, I'll try to disable Google+ as well.
On my GMail, for chat if I click on my username there is a "Sign Out of Hangouts" option. You may need to do that in GMail and on Google+ to be actually offline.

[Fixed] The ‘always online’ problem with Google Chat
In short, this is the problem: You try to go invisible in chat from your gmail and it says: “Oops! You are not invisible because you’re logged into Google Talk from another client, device, or location that doesn’t support invisibility.” No matter what you do – from signing out of all the devices/clients/locations to resetting your google account password, you STILL see the ‘oops’!
Frustrating. To the core!
Turns out that there are a number of reasons why your chat suddenly behaves this way. But the main point is that there is another (or are many other) session(s) of your chat active at that particular time. This spooky session(s) might be from a talk app on your mobile phone, the Hangout app, stand-alone Gtalk software, IM clients such as eBuddy, Trillian, etc. The idea is to end those invisible session(s), but you have no idea where that session is, right?
Don’t worry, there is a way to find that and it takes as much time as it will take you to download around 9Mb.
So, here are the steps:
1. Go ahead download pidgin, a third-party IM client and install it. We will use this client find out and force sign-out those ‘ghosts’ of your Gtalk!
2. Run the program after you install it. You will be asked to ‘Add‘ an account. Click it and select Google Talk from the drop-down menu and enter your gmail credentials. See the pic below:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Sign-in with your gmail credentials
Sign-in with your gmail credentials
3. A successful sign-in will take you to the client and you will be able to see your contact list (called as Buddy list in pidgin)
4. Click on ‘Buddies‘ and select ‘Get user info‘ or you can just press Ctrl+I. This will give you a pop-up window as shown below. Type your gmail address in it and click OK.
Enter your Gmail id
5. Wait for sometime while it fetches the information for you. Once it is done, you should see a window like the one below:
Enter your gmail id
As you can see, this account has currently got 3 active session running (including the one from pidgin). Note the IDs given for the “Resource” entry. Copy the whole content into a notepad/word file. All these IDs indicate a specific device/client in which google talk is active.
6. Now Close this window. Click ‘Manage Accounts‘ and then select your account and delete it.
7. Now, repeat the ‘add account‘ process given in step 2. This time in addition to your gmail user name and password, give the ‘resource id‘ in the ‘Resource‘ section. Sign-in
8. Now, once you are in the main window of the application, set your status as ‘Offline’. Sign into gmail and try to set your status as invisible. If you are not getting the ‘oops…’ message, then you have done it! If you are sill getting it,then follow the above step with the other resource ids that you have seen (which you should have copied into the notepad/word file). Try them one-by-one till you are able to set your status as invisible in gmail chat.
That should do it!
Thanks to Keith for this helpful suggestion.

Did you try to delete the account from pidgin after figuring out the resource id that was being used? Once you log into pidgin with your resource id, go offline and close the app but do not delete the account from pidgin itself. This way, the resource id is locked in use by pidgin and it has forced an offline state for that session. The moment you delete the account, the ghost session goes live again on some server.
MessagingA = Android
MessagingB = iOS
In my case, I deleted the Hangouts app from my ipad without signing out.

"If you are signed in to the Hangouts app on your mobile device, in Chrome, Gmail, or in Google+, you will be unable to set your status to invisible."

Pidgin keeps changing google talk to XMPP and says I am not authorized...
What am I doing wrong?
I am using the Stock calendar app, which incidentally is quite nice, and I can see my Google Calendar and my Exchange ActiveSync calendar.
However I have a few other linked calendars for my Google account and the mail app does not show these. Using the Google Calendar there is an option for "Calendars to Display" and, under that, "Calendars to Sync". If I tick the linked Google calendars under that then they will show up in the Stock App and I can check/uncheck them to my heart's desire.
So, without installing Google calendar, how do I do this using the stock app?
P.S. Anyone else notice the more you type calendar the less it appears to make sense..
Hmm - on my calendar there are three small horizontal bars at the top left that, when tapped, cause a menu to slide in from the left. Scrolling down the menu reveals a list of checkable calendars.
I'm assuming the calendar list itself is created by the calendar app by iterating through the list of added accounts in the device's general "settings" app.
That is the case for me as well, although the list doesn't show my linked calendars until I select them using the Google calendar app.
I can't see where to select them using the stock app at all..
OK I think I'm seeing what you're saying.
Maybe just login to Google from Chrome app and display calendar there. At the lower right of the main calendar page is a settings button that lets you set up linked calendars. This could be used without installing the Google calendar app.
If I'm still not addressing your problem then I'm lost as to what you are trying to do.

Experimenting a bit more with Google calendar page in the Chrome app makes me think the only way to use it to add or manage subscribed calendars is to force it to Desktop mode.
Sorted now :- I cleared Calendar storage and now all my linked calendars are showing up, should have done that in the first place I guess.
Thanks for the help anyway.
Here is a screenshot of my Sony calendar's selection list showing checkable boxes for inclusion/exclusion in calendar display.

If you're just asking how to get more calendars in this list without using Google's app or system at all, I think you have to add an account with an associated calendar in the phone's settings app.
If you're asking how to subscribe to calendars to link them for display with Google services without resorting to Google's calendar app, the answer is to use Chrome app or any browser app (or a separate device like a pc) to login to Google and manage linked/subscribed calendars.
If you're saying you fully understand the above but are not seeing the right list of calendars in the Sony app (or you *are* seeing them but are unable to check or uncheck them) then you may have a software issue with the calendar app.

OK I hope you get the problem fixed. Maybe someone else will jump in later with a suggestion. I don't really use linked calendars in Google services, so it may just be that I'm not seeing a bug you may be affected by. Good luck.

One last thing - here's a link to another forum discussion about several people having sync issues on a Z1 with Sony's app:

Yeah, mine didn’t only showed Google calendar.
I did what you seemed to have done, and cleared the Calendar storage. When I went back to the application, now it would only have a Default account/Device calendar option. So I went ahead and installed Google Calendar application, linked the necessary calendars, uninstalled it, and now the stock Calendar applications has them all.
I hate these integration issues. Blegh.
Thanks for the information!

Thanks works fine for Sony Xperia ™ Z3 Compact Stock Calendar ?
Does anyone know how to get Google Contacts visible in the contact app that comes with the phone?
The issue is, I cant dial anyone thats in my Google Contacts!
I guess you have the Chinese version of the phone, if so you need to go on Hiapp download the contact and calendar sync app (and all other major Google apps) login and in setting account do a sync, if you still can't see the contact restart and try again, if you still can't see it in account, logout of the Google account and sign in again. Hope that helps.

Don't worry about the Chinese, on the top search for contacts, sync, or google (I forgotten exactly which one to type),

I attached a picture of what you should look for also. Also get the calendar if you care about the calendar sync.

I still dont see Google Contacts and Sync at all in my Hiapp though. I've looked everywhere and typed different things into the search bar. I have an idea though, there is a share button when you get into any app on the hiapp store - could you maybe share the link? This might work.
FIXED! I unchecked auto Sync for all accounts > rebooted > installed Google Contact Sync via an APK on google > rebooted > contacts appeared in the accounts section> enabled Sync and all my contacts appeared under the phones default contacts app.!
Thank you! REP given.
Ah great, fantastic. I was just about to send you an APK link

Unfortunately I still can't get it working. I tried every which way, tried your steps above and still nothing. I can't get it to appear under Accounts/Google. Quite frustrating.

Turn off auto sync under accounts menu it's the bottom middle icon. Then reboot and it will appear, if you still have problems post back and I'll do screenshots.

I did all this but still couldn't see the contacts in my google account. I uninstalled and then installed an older apk from apkmirror (4.0.4 instead of 6.0.1), and that solved the problem for me. HiApp immediately updated it back to 6.0.1, but it still seems to be working.
