Question Delayed notification problems S21 Ultra - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

My S21 ultra has a delayed notification problem. Apps like eBay, PayPal, Gmail ETC will not receive instant notifications until I actually turn on the screen.
Apps like my Ring alarm, Aqua Mail will get instant notifications just fine. I've have tried everything like adding the apps to the never sleeping list, turned off adaptive notifications, set the apps to not be optimized by the battery ETC.
Why will some apps receive the instant push notifications while most others won't?
Anyone have any ideas how to fix this mess?

Sitting with the exact same issue and gone through all settings. Must be missing something.

I've had a similar issue, but just with a few apps....but they're only occasionally not sending me notifications or are sending me notifications for things that I've never seen before lol. So with Snapchat, for example, I usually get notifications for new snaps that are sent my way, however, on this phone, I occasionally get notifications that I've received a snapchat from like 20 people at once (when the reality is, all of those people had just updated their snap stories within the last few hours)...
Anyways, I was gonna say: "Make sure the apps aren't in sleep mode," but you have clearly tried that by assigning them to the never sleep group...
Definitely an odd issue. Guess I should just feel good due to it not affecting every app on my phone.

Another weird thing , if you have the app toggled off to not optimize battery it is automatically removed from the never sleeping apps list.
I believe this notification problem has something to do with Android Doze?

Anyone find a solution? I am experiencing this also with some notifications, not all despite coming from the same app.

Nope, no solution at all. Now, I'm not even getting missed call notifications.

Apparently it's a network issue.
Link to Samsung post

Its not a network issue for me because im referring to twitter, facebook, whatsapp etc not sms messages.
Never had this issue with the iphone. Its my only complaint with the S21 Ultra but sadly its a big one for me. Sometimes they come through fine and other times they refuse to come through unless i put in my fingerprint and unlock the device. Makes no sense. They were always instant on the iphone wether the regardless of wether the phone was off or on. With Samsung it seems i have to keep the screen on constantly to ensure i receive notifications

Yes, my iPhone 12 Pro Max and the S21 Ultra sitting side by side, iPhone instant notifications, S21 Ultra dead to the world until you turn on the screen. It's a problem with Android Doze and there is no easy fix.

Thats ridiculous

I have noticed that sometimes i get notifications but no sound so they come through silently. I don't recall any Samsung phone having this issue before ?

It really sucks that I like this phone a lot, but I get notifications on my damn S7+ Tablet before I do on my phone. Doesn't matter what wifi or cell network. There is definitely a problem, and a wipe and reload, or clearing cache does not fix it either.

My Tab S7+ 5G has the same notification problem as the S21 Ultra.

Likely Android attempting to save power....
I've had the same issue on Huawei and Xiaomi flagships

I have noticed that when I receive any type of message the first time it is basically instant, but if there comes a bunch of the same type3 of notifications through, it's muted...eg...If my friend sends me a whatsapp once I get the notification...but if the friend sends me 10 pictures all together, I will only get notified of the first one, thereafter all wil come through silently...this is for all types of notifications....it doesn't help with your issue, but also frustrating

I thought i had a similar issue but i soon realised that some times not even the first notification comes through if the screen is locked. There is occasions when it feels as though the first comes through and the rest cannot be seen until i unlock the phone. Its annoying but weird as hell that it seems to only happen with twitter from my experience. Granted that twitter is the app i receive the most notifications from but im confident whatsapp for instance doesnt have this issue as i seem to get every notification regardless of wether the screen is locked or not

oh finally I am not the only one having notification issues. got no porblem with mg s10+ both android 11 but this s21 ultra really have this notif weird problem.

Let’s be clear, this is not a Doze issue. People have been pushing that agenda for such a long time. Doze only kicks in after a certain length of inactivity, however the delayed push notification issue in Android is constant. Note I said Android, that’s because this issue affects every Android device, not just Samsung.
Someone is reading this right now thinking “my Android phones fine, I don’t have an issue with delayed push notifications”. You don’t think you do, but you do. Perform this test, and I guarantee the results will be the same no matter what Android device you use:
Set up both an iPhone and an Android phone with Facebook Messenger (same account)
Make sure the screen of both devices is sleeping
Get someone to send you a message through Facebook Messenger
Repeat the above a number of times. You will note the messages come through on the iPhone without delay, but many will be delayed on the Android. There is no fix, trust me, I’ve done everything you can think of. Turning off battery optimisations for affected apps, disabling Doze via ADB, etc etc etc. There have been many “fixes”, and some do reduce the delay, but they don’t “fix” it. I’ve had Samsung, Motorola, HTC, LG, Xiaomi, Google Pixel, Nokia, Alcatel and every single one of them has the same issue.
It’s clear there is a fault with Android Push Notifications, and it’s been there for many years. Until Google finally admits there’s a fault and deals with it, I’m afraid Android users are stuck with the problem. From what I’ve seen of Android 12, there’s still no fix, so for now I’ll stick with iOS.

Delayed or not receiving Notifications?

Hi everyone,
I have had the Moto G 2nd Gen for about 10 days now and I have noticed that notifications from several apps (Exchange email, Gmail, Whatspp, Facebook...) are either delayed by a few hours or don't come at all. This happens on both Wifi or my network. Has anyone else experienced this ?
I have tried the following with no success:
1- disable Wifi optimization
2- factory reset phone
3- Installed PNF No-Root and set hearbeat to 5min
4- Cleared data & cache of apps
My phone is not rooted running 4.4.4
Thanks
Yes I am having the same problem this is my thread on the subject:http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/help/notification-problems-t2875216
I have tried 1, 2 and 4 of your attempts to fix it to no avail.
Before I reset the phone all notifications showed the correct time that they should have come, for example if I slept the phone at 10:40 and a notification came at 10:44, I then woke the phone at 10:50 the phone would immediately buzz and sound but it would say the notification came at 10:44 in the notification draw.
However after the factory reset of the device in the same situation the notification draw would show 10:50 but I know that is wrong because WhatsApp for instance will say the correct 10:44 timestamp on the message in the app.
Notifications when the phone is awake come through perfectly every time.
The problem is actually not limited to just notifications, I play music from my phone, when the the phone is awake it plays perfectly, when you sleep the phone, the music will carry on playing but occasionally it will have a hiccup where it will stop playing for a split second then carry on, and sometimes at the end of a song you expect the next song to start but it never will, if you then wake the device the song will start playing like nothing was wrong (exactly how the notification problem is).
I don't know what the problem is I suspect something to do with bad software or faulty hardware if there is a specific part of the hardware that only comes into play when sleeping (I don't know if there is or not).
What are the specifics of your phone? Mine is a XT1068 8GB Dual SIM Retail GB completely stock 4.4.4, the system version is: 21.11.14.titan_retgb.retbgall.en.GB retgb, will be good to know if this affects specific versions of the phone or any version, to narrow down the problem.
The problem is also completely random I cannot 'make' the problem happen it just does.
Mine is the same as yours XT1068 8GB Dual SIM Retail GB 21.11.14.titan_retgb.retbgall.en.GB retgb.
I also have the same problem with music, I also noticed this with chromecast, it seems to loose connection after playing one track.
I contacted Motorola assist and they said replace the phone. I'm not sure if replacing it will solve the problem, I'm guessing this is a software issue. I
I got it from Amazon UK, I'm thinking of returning this and going back to my Galaxy Nexus and wait for the new Nexus phone.
Because we have the same software version I more strongly suspect this is a software issue now, I'm not sure what to do, I don't really want to return the phone as I will be left phoneless and a replacement would just come with the same software.
Another option would be to re flash to a different software version (an international version) but that will invalidate the warranty.
Not really sure what to do, would be good hearing if any retGB people are not having any problems, if any are reading this thread? or if any non retGB are having this problem.

:\ it doesn't look like that app fixes it even when changing the interval to 1min.
I've sort of found a way to at least make it happen to test stuff, using 2 devices I have installed Telegram on both and set each device up with different numbers so I can message from one device to the other, using the other device to the Moto G if I send messages sometimes the notification is instant, sometimes it is a minute later, there is no pattern on whether it will receive it instantly or delayed, however waking the device will always make the phone buzz if it is delayed.
If I add my tablet into the mix (tablet and Moto G on the same number) the difference is very stark, sending 5 quick fire messages the tablet buzzes for every message, the Moto G may buzz for the first and maybe the 2nd but then nothing for the other 3, or none at all, or none and then double beep on the last message or a little time after the last message. (all this is on WiFi)
The best news is that it has eventually beeped within a couple of minutes for every message, but in a conversation on WhatsApp a couple of minutes is a long time.
Again if the phone is awake or playing music while sleeping it works perfect a beep for every message every time (WiFi Again). (I know PNF is only a partial fix for WhatsApp and Telegram but I can't test it easily with Gmail and the main concern is WhatsApp as I want those messages without delay)
It's definitely something to do with keeping the phone 'active', if it's playing the music it works, if it's doing nothing it is literally like it's sleeping on the job.
I'm going to test on 3G but seems to work almost perfect so far (I haven't really used my phone on 3G much as I'm normally on WiFi)
@katkat911 can you tell me about your WiFi setup it isn't TP-Link is it? because I'm wondering if it could be a WiFi setup issue as my phone originally couldn't even detect my router until I changed some settings. (I know you have the problem on 3G too)
Apologies if this is a bit rambly I want to put my casual findings out there in order to let others have the information.
Been testing on 3G, after the phone is slept all notifications work perfectly for 10 minutes with the phone buzzing a second or 2 after my tablet, if you sleep the phone and send a message after 10 minutes the phone will only buzz after 30 minutes from being slept (ie the heartbeat).
I've reinstalled PNF app and will experiment more tomorrow, still not sure how I will fix WiFi but I think a little more experimentation is required (yet doesn't make sense why my tablet always works 100% and the phone doesn't when using the same router)

I agree with you that it has something to do with phone going to sleep. My WiFi router is Netgear. I have they same problem with every other WiFi network and also on 3G. I didnt have this problem on my previous phone Galaxy Nexus.
PNF doesnt seem to work at all.
Notification problem is proved. I also have the issue. that 10 mins theory is absolutely right. as both of you have done good research, I would suggest one of you create a question at https://forums.motorola.com/hives/e3ec93b1d7/summary and summarize all your findings. Some one from Motorola will respond definitely. I see this as a deep sleep issue with the kernel. Once submitted, you can share the link of your thread here. I and others will comment confirming this as a common problem.
You may have to first register with your moto id or may be google id.

I have posted this on the Motoral forums here https://forums.motorola.com/posts/dbb4806484
I have been experimenting again today, the problem is significantly worse on WiFi notifications are much slower than on 3G, the problem seems completely unreplicable, sometimes notifications come though aOK even after I have left the device sleeping for an hour (using WiFi) or sometimes the notification will be delayed for several minutes even if it has only just been slept (again using WiFi), 3G on the other hand there is a definite 10 minute cut off from sleeping the device.
I've had PNF installed since last night and it doesn't help WiFi at all, but 3G it might, I say might because sometimes after 10 minutes (even an hour later) if I send a notification I do receive it straight away (something that never happened before I installed PNF) but then sometimes it doesn't and it's delayed for several minutes again.
I will join the Moto forum and add my weight to that when I get back to my computer as you need to sign in with a Google account.
I've also noticed that if the phone is sleeping whilst charging notifications work flawlessly in much the same way playing music while the device is sleeping they do. I've posted this finding in the Moto forums as well.
Fingers crossed we get a solution :fingers-crossed:

I have also noticed that. It seems that many are having this issue, so far no reply from Motorola
Motorola might be investigating about it. Yesterday i went back to dalvik from art. I tested the notifications the while day. On Wi-Fi, i didn't see the delays any more. In 3g many tests were successful even after 1hr of deep sleep. Only at 4pm India time i found a delay of 22 mins for whatsapp notification. There i also realized that it had switched to 2g due to bad signal in that room. I was definitely having problem when i was on art. Last night i also got the ota for build 23. I see that the kernel is updated. I will monitor one more day and report here.
Motorola has at least seen the post even with no reply, I just hope they are busy behind the scenes working out what is wrong so they can fix it.
I've never used ART (I'm completely stock), and all the problems are still happening today, unfortunately Telegram is being DDoS'd today so haven't been able to test anything out.
It will be interesting to hear if the update you received helps in any way, esp with the updated kernel, since your retGB device received it hopefully ours may do soon too.
As far as I can tell it doesn't affect calls and SMS, but I simply don't use SMS or calls at all (WhatsApp ftw) so my testing has been the odd 'prank' phone call from my 2nd phone and it rings every time, but it's not enough to confirm if it's a fluke or if in fact it does not affect phone calls/SMS.
SMS and calls won't be impacted due to this. It's mostly related to deep sleep state of the phone. It will impact data connectivity mostly.
I have been testing as and when possible after the update. On Wi-Fi, I didn't see any delays for WhatsApp, Facebook notification, exchange mails through nine app even if the phone was in sleep mode fur an hour or so. I saw 1 min delay in Viber twice.

In a different thread Motorola amin had mentioned that they are investigating the notification delay issue. I don't see much delays after the update. There are few mins here and there, but mostly good. If you haven't received the update yet, check the ota thread and update manually. It's the same update. Then see if you find any improvement.
I got the OTA update yesterday and I'm still having the same issues

Unreliable notifications...

I bought the Watch R a week or so ago and I've been trying to work out why the Google Now notifications are so unreliable.
At first, I thought it was just me - I never really embraced Google Now and actually had it turned off on my phone (Galaxy S6 Edge). A few days ago I turned it on, configured it and was expecting to see the odd card popup on my watch every now and then but I've had zip.
So, I thought I'd test the notifications on the watch, from the Android Wear app, but the only notification that works all the time is the phone call. Most of the other notifications just don't pop up on screen and the only way I see them is to swipe the face from above and then they're there. Is this normal behaviour? I thought that notifications were supposed to popup on the screen, like on my phone!
I've reset the phone a couple of times in desparation but it's made no difference. I've unpaired the watch from the phone and re-paired it after forgetting the device. No difference. Removed all the custom watch faces and used only the once that came with the watch and once again, no difference.
I do get notified of text messages and emails with no problem, but nothing from Google Now.
Can anyone please suggest anything?
I have the s6 and I don't receive any notifications except the test phone call. I believe it to be a samsung problem with it killing the wear app from running in the background. watch worked fine with my other phones.
It's ridiculous, my s6 / gwr doing the same thing. Reboot both and things work for a little while, then gradually peters away to nothing. Except for sometimes I'll tap the watch for the time, and some random google now cards will be there, which I dismissed days before! Swipe them away but the same few keep coming back! As for the weather reports, well they've not worked for over a month now. And all this without me touching any settings whatsoever. I've exempted the android wear app from battery optimisation in the s6 too, incase they were that dense they'd overlooked that core app, but doesn't seem to have sorted it. Seems every time these companies update stuff they break it, and don't care about fixing it.!

List your issues with P30 Pro

Not sure if this is permitted by the mods, but let's make a list of issues and bugs you experience on your P30 Pro. It's a fantastic device, but every now and then I run into, or hear about some stupid issue that impacts the overall experience, but probably could be fixed if reported.
Two of my biggest issues right now:
screen gets unresponsive at times in the bottom left corner
sometimes when I pull down WhatsApp notifications, if there are more of them they get stuck on the screen and won't pull back up, not even using the back key, only swiping them one by one gets them off the screen

Ghost vibrations.. I have turned off vibrations now since it does vibrate without getting notifications like once or twice/hour or 2...
Updates from Huawei seem very staggered, seem to mainly be looking after their own country who seem to be about 3 firmware’s ahead of a lot of other places. i know a lot are getting v153 now but why are a lot going straight from 124 to 153 yet some places got fw's in-between in the 140's? i am currently on 124 and my provider EE in the uk say they still haven’t received any newer fw from Huawei since v124.
Issues with screen response, sometimes i have to tap home button a couple of times for it to register, same with some notifications when i unlock the screen, having to tap them a few times.
The software is really rubbish compared to Samsung, i have only just come over to Huawei from Samsung, i had an s8 and it had not long got One Ui, and that genuinely felt more developed, faster and smoother on my s8 that one this p30 pro.
There’s been a couple of times i have contacted the Huawei chat on the Hicare app and they are really funny cause whatever i tell them my issue is they seem to always want me to completely reset my device.
I keep getting really annoying gray bubble pop up notifications telling me apps have been blocked from showing their dropzone and other notifications similar that i know has happened, like sound has been changed etc, not sure how to turn them off cause i don't need them to keep telling me.
I don't understand why Huawei would release a flagship phone and not have the software just feel complete and nice because at the end of the day it’s that which you pretty much judge the phone on.
I guess i also don't like that there seems to be too many settings to change and turn off to make the phone useable, that’s why doing a flash that wipes the phone is really putting me off doing that and using the method that’s being used at the moment to update to 153 via the OTG method.
The screen auto brightness bug that’s not a bug according to huawei and is a feature? The fact that every time i restart my phone i turn auto brightness off and then it comes back on every restart! It really makes me laugh that they think forcing you to have to do that every time you restart is a good feature to have. They say it saves power so it good, yes if you leave it on! i was talking to them and said well the slider is there to have auto on or not so if people wanted it on, they would leave it on would they not? It’s not the biggest issue in the world but it’s fun arguing with them about it, it does annoy me though lol
My issue is simple, EMUI.
Coming from an S10 and oneUI and mix 3 with miui made me realize how bad EMUI is in everything, cloning iOS, native apps like dialer gallery calendar, missed up setrings, Crippled animations (this is a huge one) and notifications. Stupid decissions like launching the camera with volume down. Many many things
I just wish Huawei support at least native Android interface, animations and gestures
Hello,
I have P30 Pro L29 Global
256GB with 8GB of RAM
Update 9.1.0.140
My issue previouly was huge battery drain which makes no sense for p30 pro to run out of battery at 7pm (100% at 7.00am) for moderate usage.
So I have tried clearing cache partition and factory reset several times to find out the culprit. It seems the battery drain stops when I factory reset and did not restore anything from HiSuite (I start fresh).
Setting > Battery > Usage
What I noticed was that the battery drain seems to happen when "Phone Services" at 34% usage. Initially I thought it was normal but after comparing with the p30 pro's of my colleague, her "Phone Services" always lower than 2% usage.
The main culprit that i suspected was Carrier Services which I didn't update till this day in playstore.
I also stop the Carrier Services in Developer mode 1 time.
Until now my battery life is superb. Lasting me 30 hours of moderate usage (still have 37%) at the time I recharge.

- Firmware updates are messed up, they need to fix this
- Annoying beeps without any notification icon
- Memory management is way to agressive (softphones like skype keep missing calls)
- Native android options are missing
- Response to back button or home button is sometimes not working only after after pressing it multiple times it works.
All above can easily be fixed, the real question is will they fix it ?
Issues i have is that sometimes when i m fast typing a message the keyboard disappeared(i m using gestures, I don't know if this is the case) and the AOD with smart view flip case issue. Other than that i have zero issues, extreme great battery life 2 full days with normal use(facebook ,instagram ,mail ,chatting, light gaming e.t.c.) and 35% left or 1+ day heavy usage. I m coming from p20 pro and yes at the beginning i was very fraustrating with emui and how it works, but after learned and used to it, i loved it(it should be smoother though). My major complain is the lack of notification led, I missed it soooo much.
I have the P30 Pro, VOG-AL10, 8GB/512GB model; gifted from a friend
I have a couple annoyances
1) My biggest problem (along with any other mainland Android phone I've owned) is there is no way to force full encryption. You can only add stuff to the "safe."
2) My second annoyance is the aggressive power management. I've done a lot of my own tweaking so it doesn't force close my Cisco AnyConnect client for example. I use LastPass for password management and for whatever reason, whenever I re-open the app it requires I use my 2FA again even when I choose remember for 30 days. I don't know if this is a LastPass problem or what. The only way to keep it from resetting is to keep it active in my open apps.
3) Even though I use Chrome as the default browser, for certain tasks (like using a WiFi hotspot that requires registration), it will still open in the default browser which you need to accept their TOS to use...
4) I use SwiftKeys as my default keyboard. I have the Huawei IME unchecked. I use the phone, after a while the Huawei IME will get enabled again.
The BIGGEST issue I am facing is the lack of the Camera2.API implementation with the p30 pro

Even doing that you can render certain features unusable since they aren't certified so saftey net fails meaning some games, banking apps and g pay won't work. I've reset using the USB method mentioned and have everything back to normal. Just going to be patient instead of blowing cash and wrecking stuff.

I think aperture mode is rubbish. Really poor quality, unless anyone has any suggestion to improve it. However just standard photos of objects seems to have fairly decent bokeh by default so use that as a kind of object portrait mode.

Issue : abnormal Battery Drain & The device heat up when I connect to other bluetooth device (which never happened on my mate 20)
I want to put a screenshot here to let you guys see what i mean. but still dont have permission.

Android Auto doesn't work most of the time, and when it does, it stops working after a couple of minutes.
1) No Bootloader unlock
2) No way to set Alarm tone Globally
3) Missing an option to install firmware manually
4) Change volume without preview sound
5) Some basic apps are not system apps and when uninstalling them having no way of getting them back (not available on PlayStore, AppStore)
Im on 9.1.0.131 firmware.
My problems are:
1. Phone sometimes vibrates without any notification icon
2. Proximity sensor doesn't work sometimes during phone calls. The screen is lit up the whole time Im on my phone
3. The slow motion videos at higher fps are of ****ty quality
4. Opening up the apps from notifications panel doesn't response sometimes and the respective app doesn't open up
Though I dont have any issues like other mentioned like battery draining, heating up etc

The most frustrating silly bugs, makes the Mi 9 a pain to own

This phone was meant to be the best mobile I've ever purchased, but silly things are putting me off. I am only 4 months into ownership, and now looking to part company with my Mi 9 as soon as possible.
1. The data just stops working when the phone loses and regains signal - as covered in a variety of other XDA threads and elsewhere. Makes the phone totally useless to someone like me who does a lot of travelling on underground trains and on motorways - I am missing alerts, messages, emails because of this.
2. The flashlight/torch keeps turning itself on randomly without any user intervention.
3. Since the last update, Google Photos has all the images showing with a crazy contrast level that makes them hard to look at. Again, covered in lots of threads elsewhere including temporary "fixes", but frustrating.
Anything I'm missing?
I'm not in a position to root etc to try other ROMs as I rely heavily on Google Pay which is broken on rooted/unlocked phones. Current ROM 10.2.28.0 (PFAEUXM). Reporting to Xiaomi I might as well just shout my grievances into a well... :crying:
Not judging just having question to
1. Does it not reconnect to the Internet after it lost signal? When I use the underground and loose signal but get out of it it works for me still. Or is your problem different?
2. Did you link the flashlight with the Assistant button?
3. I just checked Google photos but don't see any difference in picture view. How do I see the high contrast you have?
Sincerely a new Xiaomi user
Same version of miui, locked, unrooted.
1. Never had I experienced something like that
2. Never had I experienced something like that
3. Most likely a Google photos issue. After the latest Google app update (not Google photos app) it seems to be fixed.

I agree on 1 and 2
The 3rd bug I experienced also on havoc gsi so I don't really think it is miui specific.
I would add to the list weirdly working auto brightness, on other phones it works way better than on mi9
Also notifications icons limit on statusbar is set incorrectly, fix for that is in beta since month or maybe two but xiaomi prefers to change notch shape rather than fixing bugs in stable rom...
And the last one is more like a visual "glitch" than a bug. statusbar is a little taller than a notch
I don't have any of these bugs (running Revolution OS - modified MIUI stock rom).
Point 3. (as someone already said) disappeared after an update, although the official google support told me it has something to do with the vendor in particular (even though some OnePlus 7 pro devices are affected as well).
Never heard anything like point 1. tbh. I would recommend leaving stock rom behind and either go for xiaomi.eu/revolution OS or some other sort of Rom. Trust me there is way less bloatware and a much better overall experience compared to stock rom.

1. That's correct - it shows full bars and the 4G symbol and you can make and receive calls and texts, but you cannot pass any data until you toggle data off/on or reboot. This is number one bug - what use a communication device that stops communication and you don't know about it. I am confused how it does not affect everyone on this ROM however there are more than enough people saying it is happening to them.
2. Yes, long press of assistant button to toggle flashlight. But it still turns on randomly even when the phone is just sat on the desk!
3. This is fixed apparently by disabling automatic contrast and then reinstalling Google photos - so maybe you won't see this? The symptoms are - open Google Photos, tap on any photo, after a second it changes the contrast of the image so you can barely see it.
1. Even worse: if my Mi 9 loses signal it will never reconnect unless I restart the phone. Happened on Global ROM and Xiaomi.EU ROM.
1. The data/Signal problems are 100% Provider/Region related. If not, everybody would have that same Problem.
2. If you blame the device / Stock Rom why do you come with those problems to xda? Nobody here is working for xiaomi, go to them.
3. If you like xda you should be able to use the search, all of your problems are solved a long time ago and solutions are all over xda. Just search for it.
The way you did it looks like a little child laying under the table crying and kicking around no matter who is around.
1. Can confirm mine definitely doesn't do that, would be horrible if it did, I wholeheartedly agree(miui 10.2.28 PFAEUXM). Then again I only had it for 2 weeks, wouldn't be surprised if something like this would start happening in the future, such is the life of "flagship killers", but I knew the risks when I jumped aboard even though I had the budget for an s10+ or 7 pro.
2.Never had it happen but that sounds like the kind of bug that would definitely be fixed with a minor software update. If the problem has been reoccurring after subsequent updates then a hard reset would be worth a try.
3. Not an app I use.
If you have a warranty then it should be applicable for that signal issue, it should also be easy to reproduce in a competent repair service.
Here is mine...
1. I also experience this sometimes, connection seems lost even though 4g signal is full bar, have to turn on airplane mode to refresh then it will have connection again.
2. Never happened to me..
3. This was fixed now, just update google app and gphotos. It was weird when it was like that, but now it is ok.
1. What's your preferred network type set for? I had all sorts of connection issues on AT&T USA until I switched to GSM/WCMA/LTE. I had it set for LTE Only for the longest time but on a road trip realized that wasn't always possible.
1. Never had that
2. Never had that
You might want to check with your ISP.
Yeah, there are some annoying bugs that im experiencing as well. That shouldnt happen in the flagship line. But on the other hand, there is no better phone i could buy for the money,so i will just wait and hope those bugs will be fixed soon. Otherwise its just great phone and i wouldnt give up this phone just for the camera itself.
Research dont complain

Well, you were the one that came here complaining. As he explained you, the signal problems are operator related, otherwise we all would have them, and I can tell you I used 3 different carriers in my country and they all work flawlessly.
Also, those problems you talk about have long been solved, I'd suggest you spend your time searching the forum instead complaining for no reasons.

Get used to this
Almost all xiaomi mi series communities are just horrible and often unacceptable
1. Never had that
2. Same
3. App specific issue - already fixed.
I do have other bugs that annoys me more, like:
1) screens turns on out of the blue, no notification is shown - but if I unlock the phone, I can see that there is a lower priority (not showed on lock screen) notification..
2) when alarm rings, opening the clock app (by clicking on the current time on the widget) does not show the alarm and a stop button, instead I need to pull in notifications and click on the stop action there.
3) android auto: different issues.. sometimes the call app does not appear on the notification area, so I had an issue where android auto disconnected, and I could not disconnect the call. Spotify also does not launch from the car dash, I have to manually open it on my phone. could be app specific, but knowing issues with android auto on other Xiaomi phones, I'm not sure.

I can't find anyone explaining how to fix 1 and 2.
Also, 1 not carrier specific - happens to me on both EE and Vodafone in the UK and other people reporting other various networks Europe wide.

Question Setup: Notifications while inactive on 5a/5g Android 12

I bought a Pixel 5a/5g unlocked from Google and installed Android 12 during setup. I am currently using an LG V20 on Sprint/T-Mobile (USA) and have to upgrade the phone to be compatible with T-Mobile starting in 2022, hence the Pixel purchase. The phone is not rooted and I don't have the skills to do so.
Currently, I am evaluating the phone without a SIM card for usability, features, etc before deciding to keep it or return it. I can do email but not texts.
Installed Nova Launcher 7 (Free) to recover look-and-feel of the V20 homescreen.
Issue: I am having trouble getting notifications when the phone is inactive.
- "Always show time and date " is enabled so the lock screen will show that for a while: When I get emails, I will often (but not always) get a sound, the time display gets smaller, and an envelope icon appears
- After some time inactive, the screen goes dark. At that point, incoming emails don't ever show an icon alert. I only know they've arrived by making the phone active, going to the home screen, and waiting for it to contact the email server
- As far as I know, alerts are enabled for the mail app within the mail app and also in Settings for the mail app
The V20 had none of these issues. I'd get alerts on the "Second Screen" without any problem.
1) Any recommendations for how to get alerts to show consistently?
2) Is it possible to get notifications to show on the top of the screen next to the front facing camera or to the right of that where the wifi and battery icons display? I don't want to incur a battery penalty by having the date and time constantly displayed in large format
Supplementary info:
With the V20 and Pixel both on, the V20 alerts to every email within a few seconds. The Pixel alerts at best 1-5 minutes later and sometimes not at all.
[Edited for clarity]
Go to settings -> apps and turn off battery optimization for any app you need. I personally have no problems with notifications with battery optimization off for my email app...
Thank you. I've enclosed a screenshot of what I think you said to do and will run my tests again. If it is not the correct setting, I'd appreciate knowing. I've used Android phones for a long time but each version of the OS takes a lot of getting used to.

This has improved the situation to some extent. I got email notifications for five consecutive test messages sent at intervals on the Pixel without any missed ones over about 90 minutes. But, it still takes from 1 to 5 minutes whereas the V20 responds within 15 seconds and always faster than the Pixel.
Any ideas on the latency? (I also just found a setting to allow Unrestricted Data and I set Blue Mail my mail app to have that privilege)
Are there any mandatory Google services for push notifications to work? I generally disable any apps I don't use and can't remove but maybe there is something in Android 12 that I've overdone.
Currently, Gmail, Google, Google TV, and Youtube are disabled.
Additional observation:
Once the Pixel issues the alert of incoming mail, if I access the account through a separate client and mark the mail read, the icon on the Pixel disappears immediately. It is definitely hooked into the account but the notification part is slower than it ought.
one consideration may be how your pixel is interacting with whatever wifi you are using. also it seems to me a good test would be on a level playing field so turn off mobile data on the v20 so it is using the same wifi. if it's a hotspot off the v20 then use another wifi source.
I'll try that and report back. The V20 is not a hotspot . It is on the same Wifi network as the Pixel. The V20 did have cellular data enabled on the prior tests but AFAIK, the cellular data is not used when the unit is on Wifi.
Am I correct in expecting the Pixel to have an alert time comparable to the V20?

I disabled mobile data on the V20 and compared it with the SIM-less Pixel 5a/5g. Both are connected to the same Wifi network in my house and are next to each other on a table.
I sent 6 separate messages over about one hour to an email account (not Gmail) setup on both phones on the BlueMail app configured for Push notifications. Messages were sent on the minute mark and all devices were time synched to within a couple of seconds presumably based on a network time server. 3 messages sent from an iPhone using cellular data with Wifi off, 3 sent from my laptop using Gmail. Laptop is on the same wifi network.
In all six cases, the V20 responded in ~20 seconds almost to the dot.
The Pixel "beat" the V20 one time out of six - alert came almost instantly. The other five were 2, 3, 3, 4, and 4 minute intervals (aggregate, not all in a row) and almost always on the minute mark.
I used a macOS mail client to mark the messages as read and the alerts on both devices cleared instantly.
So, unfortunately, it is not the Mobile Data.
But, the minute mark delays make me wonder if the Pixel is polling or requires other configuration to do true Push notifications. e.g. something other than battery saver that tells the Pixel to be continuously alert for pushes.
According to this link, that isn't how Push works but the observations are what they are.
How do android check for apps notifications? Can I change the frequency between checks?
I want to make my phone (6.0.1) check for notifications each hour (instead of each minute, or whatever it's set as default). Is it possible? I'd like to change this value for notifications in gene...
android.stackexchange.com
Does Android have a method to dump all the phone settings to a file? It is possible I tweaked something on the V20 a long time ago and forgot about the setting.
Additional data:
Prior runs done with both phones on battery.
Noticed Adaptive Battery was still on for some reason and toggled it off. Thought I had done that earlier. No effect to alert times.
Plugged both phones in and repeated:
1) Pixel behaves oddly. On battery, lock screen continuously shows the clock. On power, the lock screen locks after 2 mins for a while, then stops doing that but the clock brightens and dims every 30-45 seconds
2) When the Pixel screen is blanked, messages seem to be downloaded but either a sound plays with no display alert or no sound plays and no display alert
Again, marking messages read on another client takes effect immediately on the Pixel mail app.
I have no idea if this is hardware, the OS, or some weird interaction between them. I don't think there are any other battery panels to check. I received the phone on Saturday 27 November and have no idea how to contact Google for an exchange. They say they're very busy and to use their Forum which obviously won't do swaps or refunds.
i noticed under gmail settings/account settings there is an inbox notifications. and then a selection to notify for every message. i would think that this would be a default setting but looks like if you want to be notified for every message you have to select it. i normally have these notifications turned off so i guess i'm not the one to offer understanding of the ins and outs but this thing with 2 separate devices not getting almost identical notifications when desired does sorta interest me because i would think they should. i think setting battery usage to unrestricted is correct. another thing i might suspect is the adaptive connectivity selection on network connections. like maybe if you use it then wifi is not continuously on when the device is mostly idle.

Ok, thanks for this.
I think I will have to exchange or return this Pixel 5a/5g. I believe I have everything set up correctly in BlueMail. I have my own domain and IMAP mail service so I don't use any Gmail settings.
On top of all of the connectivity issues, the camera shows some light black "venetian blinds" as I move it around. Other apps such as AirDroid are sluggish when connecting to the Pixel and lightning fast on the V20.
I think I got a lemon.

i'll be interested to hear how google handles your issue so keep the thread updated. they seem to be getting bolder with denials of request for returns. the thing with the back of the 5a being kinda streaked with different shades of black is what i have on mine but i've been reading that google seems to think it's not a defect. i use a case so it's not something i get all worked up about but when other people say they think it's a returnable defect i can relate. i'm coming from the 3a and i think this 5a is overall a good evolution of the "a" lineage.

I will update the thread with the return/refund status. This was my first and now my last Google device. I only wish I had punted as soon as the notification issue came up and not spent so many hours running tests.
Their support directions claim there is a "Next Step: Chat or Get a Call" but plow through the steps and you wind up with Ask the Community or Contact Us, the latter which gives "Due to high volumes, you may experience long wait times for customer support. We greatly appreciate your patience."
Fortunately, I logged into my order and saw a "Return" link. I had saved all the packing so it is back in the box with the RMA inside and the mailing label outside, ready to drop off at the Post Office/Fed Ex later today.
Note: Google does NOT list "Defective" or any flavor thereof as a reason for the return. The two mandatory dropdowns hint at problems that might have solutions if you could actually get at somebody. The comment box got a good workout though.
My device looked ok superficially but the innards are terrible. My old, obsolete V20 from eBay running Android 8 outperformed the 5a/5g not just in notifications but with other programs and in general smart design features such as the second screen , removable battery, and excellent cameras with manual controls.
I read and watched a lot of reviews before pulling the trigger on the 5a/5g and I won't ever visit those sites again! I will try to find a service that will take my V20 (it lacks a lot of bands though) and, failing that, go back to eBay and roll the dice there. If I have to settle for lower performance, I'm not paying $440 ($399+tax) for the privilege.
I do appreciate the help from the Forum.
It is quite common for email to be checked every 4 minutes, by your email client asking your server for new messages - it is NOT usually a push service. Check your email client and if you are lucky you will find, probably buried deep somewhere, a setting for time between updates. The delays you recorded, maxing out at 4 minutes (twice) is the clue. Nothing wrong here. The V20 may be hammering the server but that is not necessarily a good thing.
I don't think you got a lemon. But you should know that Android 12 may be the cause of some of the issues. I am still on 11 and have had no issues at all - it is a great phone as far as I am concerned. I will be updating to 12 soon, and hope that the next update will fix any issues with the new OS.

The email clients on both phones were set for Push vs. IMAP polling at specific intervals. I went through all the setup screens I could find on the Pixel and on the app.
I agree that the OS may be the problem but I have to evaluate the product as a whole. There were a few other issues I had with the device which I didn't list here to stay focused and not generally gripe.
Perhaps an update will fix some or all of my concerns but I have already sent the phone back.
Is adaptive battery on? If so:
"To extend battery life, Adaptive Battery may reduce performance and background activity. Some notifications may be delayed."

A full refund has posted to my credit card. I dropped off the package at FedEx Wednesday night where they scanned it in. Got an alert of a pending refund 30 minutes later. The transaction completed this morning.
No complaints on that score. The package is still in transit so Google refunded before receipt.

FWIW, I had turned off every battery saver setting I could find including that one.

thanks for the update. that's good news. i had an experience with the pixel c tablet several years ago where the display was not scanning properly. they sent me a return ship label that day and shipped a new unit the next day. i had no problems with the new unit. so hearing that they are still quite prompt in resolving the customers issue is good to know.
