Pixel 5 Display isssue in Chrome - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Good day!
I just traded the Pixel 4a 5G for the Pixel 5 (mainly because I wanted a smaller screen size) and so far I really like it. One issue I've run into though is within Chrome. There seems to be screen tearing when I scroll towards the bottom of the screen. If I turn off the 90hz through settings then it seems to be better. I'm not sure if any else has run into this issue? Maybe I have a bad display?

HUGE ISSUE! Custom ROM’s spoiling the display panel! + Solution!

Okay, now that I got your attention, this is a SERIOUS issue. You may not even realise it, but if you’re not using MIUI, you pretty much have a Screen Burn In / Image Retention problem on your RN 8’s display. It’s temporary though, and goes away after a while. You can see for yourself, but I’ll come to that, and also to why it doesn’t really happen in MIUI. Also, the RN 8 isn’t the only device affected!
The issue:
This never happened over the 5 months I’ve used MIUI. It’s been a month since I flashed Pixel Experience Q, and I’ve noticed when opening Reddit, in its dark grey splash screen, I could see my notification bar and some app’s hamburger menu faintly. It started bothering me, and I started researching. How can I get burn in on a new device!? And heck, it’s an LCD. Turns out I’m not the only one. A quick Google search on “Redmi Note 8 Screen Burn In” gives you tons on people complaining, even here on XDA. Many think it’s a hardware issue, and replaced their display and still faced it!
See for yourself:
Open this dark grey picture linked below in full screen in your gallery. You may notice the notification bar burnt in. For a better example, exit your gallery with that picture open, set brightness to 100% and screen timeout to 2 mins, light mode, and just open settings and leave it alone. After almost 2 mins, quickly go back to your gallery with the picture open. You’ll see settings lightly imprinted into your screen!
Here’s the dark grey picture:

Here’s how it looks (sorry for the crappy quality!):

Solution:
Turns out that the Tianma LCD display panel found in most Xiaomi devices, like the RN 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, Mi 5 etc have to have a specific colour calibration. You need to set the Red, Green & Blue values to 90% in your ROM’s colour calibration. Take a look at these:

Here’s how colour calibration should look, I stole this image from somewhere
https://imgur.com/pgTExqo
MIUI already has the right calibration by default.
But here comes the biggest problem for some of us. Pixel Experience Q, the most popular Custom ROM for RN 8, doesn’t have this option. I tried Franko Kernel Manager with the stock Kernel and Genom kernel, and the display RGB values make no effect. So as of now, I’m stuck with this. Any tips? ROM’s like Havoc should have it though. So dev’s, please set this as the default colour calibration value!
I hope this helped, I put 2 hours of effort into it haha.
On another note, I hope y’all are staying safe from this epidemic!
bro i have it in miui .. its hardware not soft .. i noticed it in different xiaomi devices like note 8 - note 7 - and sure poco f1 .. then noticed it in realme 5 pro .. not found in my very old samsung grand prime / though companies nowadays go to those low end panels .. all of them
I have the same issue on MIUI (stock rom) too.
I did the exact same steps you described and I got the burn in. Well it is not much, I could see it only on full brightness though. Not much of an issue for me on such a budget phone tbh.
Changing the color calibration for all colors to 90% might help to reduce this burn-in, speaking of custom roms to include this as a default setting.
But it won't help with this cheap panel, which is ineed a hardware issue anyway.
Setting all 3 colours to 90 % just reduces overall brightness nothing else.
Thank you! Display colors can be changed on crDroid 6.4
https://t.me/InceptionNote8/66967
this works well for me, use franco kernel manager
It is not the rom issue
I'm seeing this issue in stock rom and i never changed roms till now. It is bcoz of poor quality display panel. Get it replaced ASAP before warranty runs out
I dont know if this is universal but setting the colour tone to cool fixes the issue completely in my redmi note 8
just change the color calibration to this and voila, u never experience burn in screen anymore. i changed it couple weeks ago and no burn in AT ALLL untill this day!

I own a MI A1 it's 2 years, 9 months, 2 weeks, 3 days Old and has screen burns in.
not unlocked bootloader.
no twrp,custom roms,rooting.
but being a budget device (having eMMc type of storage) i have no regrets it performs very well against phones of Exynos 9609(UFS2.0), SDM665 (UFS2.1).
Comming to the topic "screen burns" will go away on its own not a matter of Great concern, leave it like that only it will automaticly go away its not Permanent .......... :fingers-crossed:

Changed cracked screen, fingerprint sensor issue now.

I live in Toronto and considered myself lucky to find someone to change my cracked screen. All seems great, accept now my fingerprint sensor isn't rally working. Every other aspect seems to be perfect. Anyone had this issue? Anyone changed screens? Anyway to reset the fingerprint sensor other then erase and try again?
Any help would be appreciated.
TIA.
Maybe he forgot to reattach it and your phone basically has no fingerprint scanner now? Idk open it up and look for yourself.
Thanks.
Was it an AMOLED screen, AliExpress sellers are now selling TFT LCD replacement screens, alongside AMOLED screens, at about half the price. LCD screens aren't good with FOD ordinarily.
I replaced mine back in December with an AMOLED, but I've been on custom ROMs where the FOD isn't as good as stock anyway, so couldn't say if I'm getting as good performance as before. It recognises my left thumb 9/10 and my right thumb 5/10, and never as fast as stock, which seems about par for the course with custom ROMs. I considered flashing MIUI just to test the FOD properly after fitting the replacement screen, but never got round to it.

Thanks for getting back to me, yes it is an AMOLED and I do have an update!! It works perfectly once the screen is on. If I remember correctly I was able to use the scanner from the lock screen with the animation of the fingerprint.
Now I can only use it if it's in the on position showing the time etc. so I just used lift to wake so it works 100% now.
Thanks for the attention.
I have the same problem, caused by replacing it with a screen from a random ebay seller (local warehouse).
After looking through a few Aliexpress listings I noticed that some product descriptions contain a note that they sell only a compatible part, not an original. Others state "100% original" or something along these lines. And many just don't write anything... I assume most of them are fake, if not all.
It is definitely a OLED, but the fingerprint gets almost never recognized, it is hard to complete even the fingerprint setup. Only works if I increase the brightness manually. The screen goes somehow much darker in fingerprint mode, instead of making a bright cyan dot like the stock part. Enabling the screen before unlocking helps on mine too, I think the reason is the higher brightness there, but still not as good as before with the standard screen.
In addition the image is a bit worse, especially looking closer at solid grey, it looks grainy. Normally it should look clean. Do you see that as well?
Scrolling is also not as good, doing a fast fling results in a much slower movement than with the stock screen. It works and might not be as noticeable, but having two devices side by side reveals quite a big difference. I bought another 9T just to try this...

I doubt my screen is original, but it's definitely good quality. There's no noticeable screen quality issues, either with display resolution, colour or motion. Haven't compared it against another Xiaomi/Redmi display, but against other FHD+ 60 Hz AMOLED displays on a mid range Samsung and a top range Honor, it's just as good.
I have the same exact issue after replacing my own screen. It seems to have to do with the finger print animation lighting up when your finger gets in contact with it.
I've disabled the finger print method completely and that seems to help.
I'm not sure how to fix this though, as I would like to use it the way it was intended myself.
(btw factory resetting the phone helps with the success rate of the finger print sensor if you haven't tried that)
Perhaps if you need to buy a new display, I bought the "AMOLED Black" variant available here. Has been replaced on a Mi 9T, everything works fine and it's as good as the original display. It seems like the price has dropped significantly, almost 50%.

Yes, it's all working. I only have no idea what the difference is between "AMOLED" and "Original". I assume that perhaps Xiaomi certifies those displays as original, however, they're most likely the same as the "AMOLED" displays, maybe with slightly better color accuracy. I didn't notice a difference between my Mi 9T Pro and the Mi 9T with the replaced display.

I changed the display but I have problems on my MI 9T Pro with MIUI 12.
5 dot instead if 10 dot touch.
Double Tab To Wakeup didn't working.
Fingerprint sensor didn't working (restarts after using).
All these points are working on your phone with this display from AliExpress?
If yes, I will buy this display too .....perhaps .....

It's not my phone which has the replaced screen, but from what I know, everything is working. Besides that, they're quite cheap now (I had to pay double for what they retail now since it was cracked roughly half a year ago). The total job would cost you under 100 euro to get it replaced.

The screen used on my device was this link (the amoled model) and everything you described is working perfectly:
https://it.aliexpress.com/item/4000691686320.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.41084c4d4VnhIQ
A summary of the situation:
Until MIUI 11, the MI 9T / K20D [PRO] worked normally even when their screen was replaced by non-original screens with only 5 multitouch points, sometimes described as "tft" or "oled", including the fingerprint scanner.
Most of the screens available on internet sellers are of these types, and vendors often insist that they are original. The easiest way is to check the number of multitouch points, if it is not 10, it is not original.
After upgrading to MIUI 12, the fingerprint scanner of the MI 9T / K20D [PRO] equipped with these screens no longer works, restarting the device whenever trying to register a fingerprint. This is not a calibration problem.
The only solution found so far is to replace the non-original screen with an "AMOLED" screen, with 10 multitouch points, which is either original or at least has characteristics similar enough to the original to work.
This topic has a good explanation on that subject https://forum.xda-developers.com/k20-pro/help/miui-12-fingerprint-unlock-defective-t4122135
I hope it helps

Low Brightness Flicker (LineageOS & Stock too?)

Hi, sorry if this was posted before, but with XDA moving to XenForo, search seems messed up, i did several searches and nothing comes up for "flicker" in this whole Pixel 4 XL Forum...
Has anyone else dealt with the low brightness screen flicker? I know it can't be just a bad phone, since i just bought three pixel 4 XL phones and they all exhibit this same behavior.
They are all running LineageOS (Official builds) so I don't know if this just affects the ROM or stock as well (although I've read it might affect stock phones too elsewhere).
It makes the phone pretty difficult to use in very low light situations, the screen will constantly flicker (more noticeable on darker backgrounds).
At first I thought it was just the Opera browser (as that's what I prefer), but it's operating system wide... Apps like "Darker" help.... because you can crank up the phone brightness and use a filter to dim the screen.... but it doesn't get the top & bottom menu/buttons, so those remain like spotlights in your eyes with that workaround.
Just curious if anyone knows whats up with this... it's the only phone I've ever seen this behavior on (and i've used Pixel 1,2,3 XL phones all with Lineage, and a myriad of other devices back in the Cyanogenmod days.... I've never seen a screen flicker issue like this).
Thanks for any help
edit / update-
the pro version of "darker" app works to fix this.... you crank the phones brightness to 100% and with the pro version you can dim the rest of the interface.
hopefully this helps anyone else suffering from this HUGE flaw (again i don't know if its just LineageOS or not, i didn't run stock on these except to unlock bootloader etc)
Hi,
I've seen it once and solved it by switching off smooth display. Not a real solution of course, but I never really noticed the difference between 90Hz and 60Hz anyway.

Question Realme GT 2 problem with AMOLED display and text visualization

Hi, I recently bought a Realme GT 2 8/128GB Global RMX3311_11_A.14 firm and have been using it for past couple of days.
What I have noticed like artifacts around black text on white background, like a bright halo under dark shapes and clear/light background, it's like a 1px brighter-than-the-background, like a broken anti-aliasing/ClearType or maybe is that the sharpness is very high.
I have tried all the configuration options available for the screen but there have been no changes. For example, in the list of Wi-Fi networks, in the password field, if you look at the black line, it is in one of the places where it is most noticeable.
https://imgur.com/t50LOm5
it is very difficult to capture with a camera, this is not my phone but the same thing happens
https://imgur.com/zOkyWWG
I think i have same problem which is reported in this other thread for a Xiaomi phone https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/over-sharpened-mi-11x-amoled-display.4319715/
Is this normal or there's any problem with my display? Is this a Realme UI 3 issue and can be solved in following updates?
I have other three Amoled phones and this DOES NOT happen to any of them! (Realme 8, Oneplus 3T, Xiaomi Mi A3)
thanks!
regards
Do you have DC Dimming enabled ?
I noticed that when it is enabled in low brightness and black background there's some flickering on the page text when scrolling.
But that particular issue I don't have.
Hi apsol, thanks for your answer
No, I did not have DC dimming active, I have tried to activate it but it has no effect on what I comment
with time I'll get used to it, now I know it's there and I see it. What I would like to know is if it is a problem with this AMOLED panel or rom/driver issue which could be adjusted via software
I know how it is, once you see it you can't unseen, it would drive me nuts too. Hehe
Have you tried testing for dead/stuck pixels if it doesn't show there my guess is software.
I'm on RMX3311_11_A.14.
What about you ?
Hi,
Same firmware version here, RMX3311_11_A.14 global
the truth is that I am not sure if it also happened with the A.13 because I almost updated it at the moment, I did not realize this until I was in the A.14 ...
thanks
The same problem on my phone. It is easier to see also on black background with white font.
Unfortunately I think this is a screen issue not soft
Have anyone have similar issue? Is this global problem or only 2 of us struggle with this issue?
Check if you have high contrast text enabled.
I have high contrast disable ( but the same issue is visible when option is on). Do you have this is issue? Or should I send my phone on RMA?
I don't.
If it bothers you that much return it.
Hi again,
After continuing to search for information on this issue, I found following post on reddit that I think has the same problem with an iPhone 13
https://www.reddit.com/r/iphonehelp/comments/tdy5tc
I think it's a common problem with AMOLED screens, but in some it is more noticeable than in others and it also depends on the user
after detecting it on my Realme GT 2, if I make an effort, perhaps I could say that it also happens on my OnePlus 3T, however the difference with my Realme is remarkable, the same with a Realme 8 of a family member
By the way, another thing that I have detected is a color shifting when the viewing angle is varied, much higher than in my other devices with AMOLED, it must be said that the larger the screen, the more noticeable it is
I'm a little disappointed with the screen to be honest
thanks

I came specifically to this forum to check whether its true about the screen's colour shift and font edge issues. Seems its true. Its believed that they have used the same samsung E4 hard screen, that they used in oneplus 9RT. You can check 9RT's display review below:
https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/10/22/oneplus-9rt-review-perfect-balance-camera-price/
There is also a Chinese video on GT2 display. Its a review of k50 and gt neo3, but they have shown display of gt2 also. Watch from 2:30 min.
I don't see that problem on my gt2 in normal use.
I also have the blue shifting even when looking straight. I try to ignore it.
Someone told me it was the screen protector but I never removed it to be sure.
But every review I've seen there is color shifting.

Question Display problem or not? Pixel 7

Hello!
I received a pixel 7 phone today and at a slight angle on the white screen I see strange shades (something like rainbow, green), but when I look directly at the phone, this is not noticeable. In normal operation, this is imperceptible, it is noticeable only when only the white screen is on. on the old oneplus 6t phone, this effect is the same, but here it is a little better visible on a white background, perhaps due to the fact that the pixel is much brighter than the screen. Should I be worried, or is this how it should be and you just need to get used to it?
On the Internet, I found a video on a similar problem. Link to similar issue:
https://www.reddit.com/r/pixel7series/comments/y3af8s
My pixel 7 does not have this. Based on what I found on the internet, it seems this is a quality control problem for the display where some screens will have this while others do not.
It seems that the advice is that if this problem annoys you, then the best thing to do is to return the device for a full refund. Then re-purchase the device.
It's not recommended to replace, because then it becomes difficult to ask for a refund/another replacement if something does happen again.
I dont have this
It's because of the display panel being used. DXOmark reviewed the Pixel 7's screen and stated:
The biggest color-related problem on the Pixel 7 is that it shows alternating pink and blue stripes as the viewing angle changes, as seen in the photo below and the graph.

The display still got 140 points and is currently in line with phones like the iPhone 14.
If you have dark mode turned on it's way less noticeable.
