LineageOS 17.1, Flickering on dark theme - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I hope that I'm posting in the right place. I am running Lineage OS 17.1 on a Pixel 4XL and I am experiencing a flickering wherein the background color changes from the darker version to a lighter version and back again. This is especially noticeable with the dark theme and apparently it is a known issue (
https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/hnkmln/_/fxc1l7p
, https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/...option-to-show-refresh-rate-looks-like-fraps/, https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/...option-to-show-refresh-rate-looks-like-fraps/). My problem is that I cannot find any of the 90Hz or "Smooth Refresh" options anymore. But, I know that they were there before I installed LineasOS 17.1. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you have developer options enabled? If not, click settings/About Phone, click the very bottom 'build number' 5 times. This will enable dev options.
Also you should post questions in the Q/A but not the dev forums. You will get better help in the Q/A.
Another useful resource is the forum for the specific ROM if you do not get results in Q/A. Where you posted the question is more for development of ROMs, kernels, and such so it's not the best place for the type of question. The mods may move it but they may not.

Hi,
thanks for the help.
I do have Developer Mode enabled. I could not find any refresh rate or smooth display settings. But according to this (www.pcmag.com/news/pixel-4-turns-off-90hz-refre...) it seems like the refresh rate may have something to do with brightness and it seems to be backwards in that turning brightness up above 75 enables 90Hz while turning brightness down below 75 disables 90Hz and sets it to 60. I see the flicker with a brightness below 50. Turning brightness up to 100 seems to make the flicker go away but it is really really bright.

I'm not directly on LOS at this moment (I'm using PD11), but I have used it a few times and didn't have this issue (or I don't remember having the issue while using it).
A few questions, first did you find and test the refresh rate in dev options, if so, did it help? Second (more of a personal question than anything else) but you noted LOS 17.1, that's Android 10. Why use the older 10 and but not LOS 11 (18.1) now that it's official? I believe LOS 10 is phased out for Android 11 (18.1) so I'd use the latest official LOS (18.1 Android 11). Third, have you enabled force 90 Hz in dev options and tested that outcome? I know some users mentioned they needed to do this to fix random display issues but I am not directly familiar with them (so it's not tested by me personally).

I ran Lineage based on Android 11, never tried the Android 10 version of it, but with Sultan kernel, I didn't have the issue. Currently running PD on Android 11 with Sultan, no issues here as well.
What's the reason you're staying on Android 10? Also, in the display settings, any chance it's called something else instead of smooth display?
Also, it could just be the rom itself. It seems another user had the same issue. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/low-brightness-flicker-lineageos-stock-too.4197665/

just figured i'd put this here... i posted this back on December 3rd 2020:
Low Brightness Flicker (LineageOS & Stock too?)
Hi, sorry if this was posted before, but with XDA moving to XenForo, search seems messed up, i did several searches and nothing comes up for "flicker" in this whole Pixel 4 XL Forum... Has anyone else dealt with the low brightness screen...

Darker app was the only fix i've found that actually worked, i have three pixel 4 XLs now, newest one is running Android 11 / LineageOS 18.1 ... it affects all of them, it's hardware related as you stated above with the refresh rate... that would be a good fix, if you could lock the refresh rate, but i was never able to accomplish that
i have need of miracast in my car now, and Pixel phones still blocking that sucks... might have to find a new model of phone

mi5 diminished parts of previously opened apps remain stuck on screen.

hello to all,
So I've recently noticed this happening on my mi5 32GB variant. Whenever I close an app, after using it for sometime, a diminished part of that app remain even after closing it.
for example, if I use FB app for sometime and when I close it and go to homescreen, near the upper part of the screen I can see the diminished part of the FB app ( the upper part of FB app) even after closing it.
This can be viewed better if I go to recent apps screen. Since it has a greyish background the image can be viewed better. This is more prominent in the upper corners of the screen, but it also visible on the lower corners as well.
This happens when the phone becomes hot after working for sometime. If I leave it locked and idle for sometime, that image fades away and everything becomes normal. But if I start using the phone again for sometime, the problem comes back.
I kind of think this is something wrong with the lcd panel because if I take a screenshot (of the homescreen/recent apps menu when the problem persists) and view it through the PC it looks fine.
I've flashed both lineage OS and xiaomi.eu ROMs and this happens in both of them.
My phone has a LGD panel.
If anyone here has previously encountered this problem or if anybody have any idea about why this is happening and/or whether there are any solutions for this, I would really appreciate your help
I think its called a screen burn issue. Dont have a solution though

right ... I suspected something like this coz it happens only when the phone is hot. I didn't knew the correct term for that ....
thanks for the reply buddy. appreciate it
It's image retention. Which happen quite frequently on ips display made by LG. Many LG's flagship also suffer this symptom. The only way you can reduce it is by reducing the amount of RGB(Red green blue) colour profile by 5-7% though only doable in LOS.

Look under display calibration and change your RGB values accordingly: R: 93% G:93% B93% . It works like a charm :highfive: I use LineageOS although not all ROMs have this feature.

thank you both for the help :good:
I flashed the LOS latest build and adjusted the RGB according to what you've said. Let's hope it does the trick. :victory:

yeah use the LOS 14.1 and adjust the RGB to 90. I suppose it hides the retention effect. To fix the problem completely, I think the only option is the replace the screen.
some people are using KCAL which essentially provides the same options( and more) but keep in mind that it needs root access and kernel modifications.

Outdoor Mode (hidden brightness menu, WHY?)

title says it all, why is this hidden and can only be accessed thru settings, and it's not a one time toggle, you'd have to go into settings every time you pull your phone out. just why? would be great for the brightness slider to just go to max instead. anyone know if theres any mods for this? or just what this is about, seems strange.

Mine always stays where ever put the slider. But then, I have auto brightness off.
Yeah what version you got? Wish we had outside mode.
I have a 950F exynos 128 GB, and It does not have such setting...
Because it's samsung. They will probably never make a good software. Just search for "automatic brightness bug". They just ignored this problem. No wonder they just hidding that option.
Outdoor mode can be enabled by editing something in system folder. Most of custom firmwares provides that function.
I've never seen that setting on mine. It's automatic for me.

IT is not a bug, and yes, there are ways to increase brightness beyond standard maximum, I remember from the days of my note 3, that many people posted very bad screen burn in and excesive batt drain when changing the lines to attain the most bright screen possible, same applies to speakers, might as well get blown, The auto brightness in note 8, in fact is very well implemented, because it learns your preferences, that is, if set to auto, and you move the slider, whenever the phone detects the same lux level, it will set the level you chose, infact, when in autobrightness, when sensing too much light, it will set an extra ammount of brightness

Agreed. Works very well. Was using GPS Google maps for the first time yesterday, screen was automatically too bright. I used slider to lower brightness, it learned my preference.

Since long I haven't seen any Note device (at least International versions) have Outdoor mode enabled by default unless you are using custom ROM. But this mode i have seen available on low range samsung devices. Actually it is hidden and one minor change in settings app enough to enable outdoor mode.
I will try to make small app without making changes in setting app, though it might needed root access.
Thank you dr ketan! I have used your excellent roms and kernels in my note 3 and 4
As I said y'day, I have made and posted Outdoor mode Tool on my Facebook wall.

hey something cool came out of this post, awesome!
so the app acts like a toggle to turn on the outdoor mode, pretty cool!
Works perfectly. Thank you.
Have noticed this mod seems to time out after 15 minutes or so. Any workaround for this?
@ dr.Ketan: since updating to oreo your app does not work anymore... do you have a solution?
THX in advance!
I am on oreo too and working fine. Check you have granted su permission

Auto brightness to low

Hi i am on gloabal stable rom and i have noticed that the brightness in low light goes to low and iff you change it manually to slightly higher it wont stick and after the phone screen is turned off and then back on the brightness in darker areas is to low again. Most android phones on Pie i have had have adaptive brightness meaning it will adapt to how you set it in each environment but on Miui i think it is different and it is also called auto brightness rather than ambient brightness. I am rooted and i have tried a couple of magisk fixes but nothing changed and in dark area it is still to dark and this is a big annoyance for me and i think it should an easy fix. Maybe someone know where the brightness values are located and can explain how to change this manually so it does not go so low in dark areas.
I have the same problem with 10.3.1 mi 9t pro
I don't have the problem anymore I moved to lineage

Somebody on forum said that you have to train your adaptive brightness. Every time it is too low you bring it up with slider and after few times it should learn your preferences. I didn't yet try this, but I will...
Usually on Android it works like that but on miui its called auto brightness rather than adaptive brightness and didn't work in the same way.
Any news on this? Does it work on MIUI 11 / Android 10 better? I love this phone but this issue is really annoying.
I'm on miui 11 EU it works perfectly.

Low Brightness Flicker (LineageOS & Stock too?)

Hi, sorry if this was posted before, but with XDA moving to XenForo, search seems messed up, i did several searches and nothing comes up for "flicker" in this whole Pixel 4 XL Forum...
Has anyone else dealt with the low brightness screen flicker? I know it can't be just a bad phone, since i just bought three pixel 4 XL phones and they all exhibit this same behavior.
They are all running LineageOS (Official builds) so I don't know if this just affects the ROM or stock as well (although I've read it might affect stock phones too elsewhere).
It makes the phone pretty difficult to use in very low light situations, the screen will constantly flicker (more noticeable on darker backgrounds).
At first I thought it was just the Opera browser (as that's what I prefer), but it's operating system wide... Apps like "Darker" help.... because you can crank up the phone brightness and use a filter to dim the screen.... but it doesn't get the top & bottom menu/buttons, so those remain like spotlights in your eyes with that workaround.
Just curious if anyone knows whats up with this... it's the only phone I've ever seen this behavior on (and i've used Pixel 1,2,3 XL phones all with Lineage, and a myriad of other devices back in the Cyanogenmod days.... I've never seen a screen flicker issue like this).
Thanks for any help
edit / update-
the pro version of "darker" app works to fix this.... you crank the phones brightness to 100% and with the pro version you can dim the rest of the interface.
hopefully this helps anyone else suffering from this HUGE flaw (again i don't know if its just LineageOS or not, i didn't run stock on these except to unlock bootloader etc)
Hi,
I've seen it once and solved it by switching off smooth display. Not a real solution of course, but I never really noticed the difference between 90Hz and 60Hz anyway.

Question What to know before installing LineageOS

Hello!
The LineageOS thread is getting very long at 12 pages now, I am looking to install it, but since this thread is so long, it is hard to track what is fixed and what is an issue. So please, if some of you with Lineage could reply with some of the current issues it would be very helpful for me and other people.
I will try my best to add them to a list below for other people looking to install Lineage This is what I have gathered so far.
No vibrations after screen/SIM unlock
Fingerprint scanner only works with screen on
Fingerprint scanner flashes the entire display at max brightness
Night light does not work
(Maybe) No data roaming
(Maybe) Bluetooth APTX codec does not work for calls
(Not a bug) Screen refresh rate can only be changed with adb
Quick update: I installed Lineage anyway lol. For me all haptic feedback works, so I barrwd it from the list. Some I could not test. Overall Lineage is sooo much smoother than the stock ROM, Asus removed so many little animations. Also I noticed the sometimes, screen kind of shifts colors rapidly, maybe this is related to auto brightness...
Edit2: its not the auto brightness so my next hypothesis is the refresh rate going to 60 and back to 120 when I touch the screen
Edit3: it seems to be switching between 120/60 to 90 for some reason? I tried manually switching refresh rates with adb and saw a very small difference between 60/120, but with 90Hz, the colors are all over the place, same happened on the stock rom too.
