General Grainy pictures - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

Is it just me or does photo quality kinda suck, almost all my pictures come out grainy and my note 10+ pictures were much better, kinda regret the upgrade

lol wasn't sure if you're serious, but there's a 79 page thread called Camera Performance that has plenty examples of good and bad pictures as well as various settings and scenarios. You should at least post examples of what you're talking about.

Thanks I'll check out the thread didn't see it, haven't really been active in the forums for awhile, but all my previous phones never really messed with camera settings just point & shoot.

Disable Scene Optimizer. For me it removes the grainy effect on photos.

Are you seeing the same issue for all cameras?
Or is the issue only when you use excessive digital cropping/zooming?
Keep in mind, your phone might be using the main sensor (1x) and then digitally cropping that to generate whatever photo you are using.
If so, you'll see a much better quality if you rely on the optical zoom, not digital.

Instagram photos look like crap on here

I get that instagram is all about filters but I'm talking about photo resolution on the uploads. The photos shared from my One are far more pixelated and jaggy (overall crappy .jpgs themselves instead of filter related) than photos from my iPhone 4s were. Is there any reason for this drop in quality of pictures? What's the point of having this awesome camera if all the photos I share to both instagram and facebook look so crappy when shared?
These are 612x612 pictures there shouldn't even need to be any compression done on them to warrant the loss in quality.
Facebook is similar, I can readily zoom on my friends' iOS uploads from my phone but my uploads are letterboxed on my screen and I can't zoom in on them. It's frustrating when one of the reasons I switched to this phone was for photo quality.
I know it's not the phone's fault because they look great on here, so what's the deal with these apps and does anybody know how to fix?

They look okay but there's a noticeable drop in quality from the same scene (even the same photo if I put the iOS photo on my android phone). Either Instagram, Facebook, or the Android upload system is scaling the pics down more than is done with iOS photos.
It's not deal breaking but when part of the reason you switch phones is the improved camera tech on the new one, it's a little grating that your 2 year old phone's photos look clearer than your new one's photos on social media sites.

What's happening is that a 612 x 612 resolution photograph is being scaled up to a screen that is 1080 pixels across and more than an inch larger. The iPhone 4S only had 640 pixels across so its no comparison. The much higher resolution and the vastly larger screen is why the pictures look pixelated on the HTC One. Instagram should really consider increasing the image size to 1024 x 1024 seeing as how mobile displays have come a long way since the Retina displays of 2010.

I agree with what you're saying but actually my issues come from the photos themselves when viewed on a regular computer browser window. I can look at my instagram history from the photos I post now to the ones I posted a few weeks ago with my iPhone and they're noticeably jaggier for some reason coming from the One. It's a shame but hopefully it's a minor bump in the road towards the future I agree should happen.

I did notice that on the last picture I posted. The letters seemed jagged. Of course, we probably can't expect a fix for a while because all the major app developers cater to the iPhone users first. Instagram was iPhone only for a long time.
I think the 16:9 sensor may have something to do with it, as opposed to the 4:3 on most other phones

Ahh I gotcha. If anything it sounds like its a setting with the Instagram app for Android. If you can, maybe you can try it on another Android phone and see if the issues persist. If they do it's due to the app, if not then unfortunately it would be the phone acting wonky.

I think it may be phone specific. The pictures from my EVO LTE never looked like that. I will post the same picture from both phones sometime and compare to see if there is noticeable difference.

I went to the settings->advanced features and unchecked the two options there and my pictures seem to look better. I'm glad you've noticed this as well because I feel like people who've only used android don't realize how much nicer pics from the iPhone looked.
Yeah, I just noticed this as well. The pics actually look worse than those from my old Galaxy SII, which had a terrible camera. What the hell, instagram?
I've noticed this as well...the pictures take a big hit in IQ when uploaded to Instagram. The copies saved to the phone look fine, but they do look pretty bad on Instagram. Even the preview thumbnails took a hit.
My friend has a SGS4 and his pictures come out SUPER jagged....mine do not suffer from that problem but do look watered down.
Pictures look much, much, MUCH better on the iPhone 5.

pics look terrible
It seems that the apps is over compressing and applying sharpening to them. I have the HTC One international version.
The last couple of days I thought I was going crazy when seeing the crappy quality of the uploaded photos.
I will upload a couple of pics later to see if disabling High quality processing in the Advanced options fixes this.
It most probably something related with new phones, as some Galaxy S4 users are reporting the same problem with their phones.

Hi all,
Hoping someone can help please. Just took delivery of my z1 and the pictures look absolutely terrible. It's current set to superior auto but every photo looks so grainy on screen. Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

Yes, I'm less than impressed with mine - certainly nowhere near dslr level as they were touted. I get a lot of noise on mine and they are over exposed.
If you manually focus with camera button then take pic, results are somewhat better but still disappointing.
Could you please post some of the pics you've taken please? The reason I got rid of my LG Optimus G was because of the subpar camera, been waiting for the Z1, so I'd hope it's not a lateral move on the camera front

yeah same here...photos appear washed out in low light..also a lot of purple grains appear when attempting to take a photo in low light...for a flagship device which touts camera as its biggest selling point z1 is a massive disappointment...also the microphone did not work for me while connecting the phone to a headphone without a mike...ill be going to sony service centre on monday...hopefully they'll replace my unit..will update whether the other unit's camera is better...
Guys, do we have any informed update about the camera low quality issue? Is it an early release issue which will be fixed by an update or should I return my phone and get another one in a couple of months?
Please share your input because I am really skeptic about this otherwise excellent device.
Use Manual mode with Night setting
I've come across a lot of people complaining about the camera not giving out noise-free images like it's supposed to. The trick is to use manual mode. I agree, if you use Superior Auto mode, it's a miss most of the times, and when it does work, it gives a purple-ish tint at the corners.
However, If you use manual mode and select the SCENE to NIGHT, the images come out amazing and noise-free!
[DO NOT JUDGE THE IMAGE BY WHAT THE VIEWFINDER SHOWS YOU. A lot of things happen when you press the shutter button. The viewfinder simply goes red for making it easy to focus. The final image in the gallery is a hundred times better]
The Scene modes are one of the most commonly ignored settings.
I hope this helps!
Sorry. Most people just want to use auto mode and haven't got time to fiddle here and there.
The scenes help but they are not the cure in that the underlying problem of poor quality is there. I wonder if people who post either are using a different software version, or are being paid by Sony to post positive remarks.
Nor is it acceptable that we should resort to using alternative camera apps. This phone cost £600 or up to.
It should work as advertised on the tin.

Did anyone face auto-focus issues? Sometimes the camera stuggles to auo focus..
No focus issues on mine, just horrible, grainy images. really really unimpressed with the camera. If this is a firmware issue then I am really unimpressed that they saw fit to release it in this state.
Example's here - note the complete lack of any detail, the grainy over compressed background. Zoom in slightly and see the over sharpening that has been done, the bike frame goes jagged.
The camera was one of the reasons I bought this phone, and in its current state, I declare it 'unusable'
My old GT-N7000 Galaxy Note 1 took way better photo's

Hi Nigel,
I appreciate your frustrations. I have just moved onto the Z1 after holding onto my old but trust worthy Galaxy S2 and after the expense and hype surrounding the release feel let down by the camera as well. Suggestions seem that issues may be resolved once further firmware updates come about, not sure how soon these will happen though.
Anyhow off to take some crappy photos sine it's nice in Stirling today lol!

I said the photos in http://scratch.veletron.com/z1 are my examples of the Z1, not in any other folder on that site. Go look at the properties in the files in http://scratch.veletron.com/z1 and you will see 'C6903' as the camera model.
Some numpty then went and picked up some pics from some ancient ebay auctions on the same site, and claimed that I reckoned these were taken by the Z1. Know your facts Geoffxx !! You are making yourself look like a right amateur!
Since taking the pics in http://scratch.veletron.com/z1 , I have added some 100% crops of the same pics.
Oh, and its no good looking at the pics on your phone, if you want to see their true ugliness quality-wise, look at them on a PC.

wery glad for you, but we're talking about other things here
Have to generally agree with roaringhere here, for a phone the low light performance/quality is not as bad as people keep on making out, if you take control from the phone auto mode!!! The biggest problem is the Sony selecting a very high ISO, so set this manually with a shutter you can hand hold and you will be a lot better off.
Seriously get any point and shoot or other phone and run it at the same ISO's and see how crap they are also, even some DSLR's running ISO's of 1600 look pretty crap.
Seen it time and time again people bagging the camera in low light, comparing it to others, and yeah they definitely look different, and mostly worse on the Sony, but they are comparing ISO 1600 vs ISO 400...
Here is an untouched hand held ISO 8000 fireworks mode using the Sony Xperia Z, no photoshop here http://www.flickr.com/photos/dan-wilson/9921483725/ I can tell you now you would struggle to find a point and shoot sensor or smaller that produces a better hand held shot at 1 second exposure with an 8000 ISO. I can tell you now I wouldn't even dream of using this ISO with my Canon 7D

My point exactly! Thanks...
I feel that the hardware is not to be blamed here...
The software here is at fault..
The superior auto mode is not so superior in its job(it's ok if you want to capture something real-quick)... But if you want the best from the hardware you'll have to turn to manual controls...(Camera FV-5 is the best app I know for that)
Jpeg compression is just too much here...thus we can see the lack of detail in some photos(macro)
To get the best of the camera,My suggestions are as follows :-
If you like the stock camera app... 1)Turn off superior auto mode... Switch to manual mode
2) set the ISO at 200 (max) for daylight photography,,,,400 for twilight
3) HDR off
4) metering mode set to average
And if you still want better results:
1) install Camera FV-5 (full version support developer )
2) go to settings -> photo encoding settings -> file format -> set it to PNG ( it takes some seriously huge pics (15 mb..:-o) )
3) now apply all the manual controls mentioned above
If you think what difference does the above methods do to the quality of the photos... Take a photo with normal method (superior auto) and then manual method... And then compare..
If you feel that I've helped you in anyway, please hit the thank button

I have to agree that sony is doing crap with the software and maybe the hardware.
Usually camera in a phone should be aim and shoot, and should deliver the best results in a quick way.
Not all costumers know photography, and they don't want to stay in the settings for a few minutes before taking a photo.

Dude just because you own a Canon 5D doesn't make you a photographer, just means that you have money to buy one, a camera and lenses does not make the photographer. So stop with the mine is bigger than yours crap.
You clearly have no idea what you are talking about, if you continue to bag the phone in low light. You clearly have no idea about image sensors and how they work, what causes image noise in a photo, why ISO effects are different per device based on the image sensor size.
The photo I show on my website, is not a wow shot to look at, but if you take into account all the elements then it actually is, 1 second exposure hand held, ISO 8000 on a tiny sensor. I am sure you will not be able to hand hold a low light shot for one second with your 5D and have it as sharp as the phone shot I show.
Come on guys really stop talking crap and just compare apples with apples, not apples with cars. I challenge any of you to find a single point and shoot and take pictures with the phone and with the camera with as similar settings as you possibly can then compare how good or bad they are, and really for a phone with a sensor much smaller than most of the point and shoot cameras the zperia z is right up there, the Sony auto modes (software is crap) at making the best decisions, and I would say any Sony P&S with superior auto mode is in the same boat.

hahahaha, with you on that

Nexus 5 is the best camera phone you will ever own, and heres why.

Right, so with a bold statement like "the nexus 5 is the best camera you have ever owned" you probably think i'm completely crazy. But I would like to try and see if I can explain why I made such a statement in the first place. With many of you mentioning how the camera doesn't measure up to other phones on the market and comments discrediting it all over the forum I though I needed to point out a few things.
1) The image stabilization is amazing. Literally stunning. Having recently been to see Bring me the horizon I decided to use the phone to take a few photos and some video of the gig. Now while the nexus 5 may not be the only phone on the market with good OIS it is most definitely one of the best. Have a look at some of the videos below, all were filmed completely hand held, and while the audio may be poor (ill get to this later) it is still a very good image considering the conditions.
http://www.youtube.com/embed/evPUs6pIeW0
http://www.youtube.com/embed/K2u-gR-XLVc
2) Low light performance is amazing too. Many people have compared this to the photos from the HTC One, and iPhone 5 saying that the Nexus 5 doesn't bring out enough light in certain areas and that the colours are off, but if you look at it properly and check the colours you find that the Nexus 5 produces much sharper, less over saturated and less hazy night time shots. Some people like the over-saturated look but honestly from the point of view of a photographer, your better to take a 'flat' image from the phone and edit it than try and edit a poor image from the HTC One. Of course I will admit the Lumia 1020 blows any other phone out of the water, but its hardly a fair fight..

Although the G2 appears brighter in this image, the nexus 5 still wins on colour accuracy, that is however subject to opinion.
3) The Nexus 5 is aimed with amateur photographers in mind. The little ring around the back camera, yep that glass bit. Its magnetic which makes for very easy mounting of mobile extension lenses, this coupled with the very powerful new image editing tool in the gallery seems to hint that Google want to help you get more out of your photos. More importantly the editor is now non destructive, meaning you can undo all changes and get your original image back very easily. :good:
4) Nexus 5 images are a editors dream (when it comes to smartphones anyway). As mentioned above the Nexus 5 creates almost reference style images it makes editing, colour correction, exposure correction amazing and camera software updates on the way and a few improved camera apps in the play store, it can out put some very detailed near RAW quality images which a a joy to edit, not some of the over processed rubbish the iphone 5 and HTC output.
5) The aperture, while only being f2.4 it is still a reasonably wide aperture which means that it can do lovely close ups and in good lighting conditions its better than most point and shoot cameras. The camera is very sharp when compared to many other and while some people may say that the videos and photos in low light can get a little grainy but I think its at an acceptable level.
Sound quality, now although above I said the sound quality was poor, under normal conditions it performs very well, the problem in my videos was that I was at Brixton O2 and they have a 9000w audio system (for comparison your average disco is around 2500w) and this is made worse by me being stood three meters away from the subs.
Shutter lag, something I forgot when first writing this, is completely software based, many of the free camera apps on the play store fix this issue and I am sure goggle will fix this with an update soon!
So what im really trying to say is...
The Nexus 5 is the phone Google are branding as a way to keep memories, right from the first ad its has been sold as the phone to document life with and I think it really does a good job of that, yes the photos aren't DSLR standard but thats not what its about, its about making sure you get the shot, that memory captured to keep with you. I think the real ethos of the nexus 5 is the phone for life, and in that sense I think it does an amazing job.
But really the most important thing to remember is that
The best camera in the world is the one that you have on you at the time!
You didn't address the long focus times and terrible shutter lag. Thanks for your effort but you are not convincing me of anything. You should also change your title to reflect if taking pictures of non moving objects only because anything that moves won't stay still long enough for the N5 to focus and actually snap the picture.
Your title also does not reflect your statement below either:
Of course I will admit the Lumia 1020 blows any other phone out of the water, but its hardly a fair fight..
-Reserved-
Please, post your opinions along with your own photos and videos taken with the nexus 5

Shutter lag, something I forgot when first writing this, is completely software based, many of the free camera apps on the play store fix this issue and I am sure goggle will fix this with an update soon!
thanks for reminding me
I would also say thats not true, moving objects are not a huge problem its the focusing which again is only a massive problem if your taking photos of something very fast moving like sports, I also think this is easily fixed with software updates

I am yet to find a 3rd party app that fixes the issue. So far they all have some kind of issue of their own.
Until we see a fix from Google this is how the camera is acting today and any review or opinion should based on current usage and not in the hopes of an update. No one knows when Google will fix this if they can fix it at all.

Google are working on a fix to come out soon apparently but until then ive been using the Moto X camera apk much faster and generally much better. Another solution is to record a video and then tap the screen for instant photos. Once done just delete the video

If you think the camera only has problems capturing fast moving things like sports you did not really use your camera enough to write up your opinion article here. lol
Not saying the camera can't be fixed with software, I am just saying you can't review the camera based on an if Google updates it. When Google updates it, you can then update your review to reflect the update. Until then your review should be a tell all of the camera today for people who might be deciding on the N5 not what might be later on.
If you can't tell I am extremely annoyed at the camera on the N5 and Google for releasing it like this. lol
I've been using the MotoX APK and getting great quality pictures, very little lag and overall a much better experience. If I need HDR then I will use the stock camera. Focus time and lag shouldn't matter in HDR anyway since it's not moving.

My review is based on what ive experienced with it so far with the stock camera app and im not guessing at what Google will fix or wont fix, ive used the camera in very different conditions and only found a problem with very fast moving subjects, but its not a massive problem and can be solved with other camera apps that are available now for free. I don't see your problem?

Please tell me what camera apps will help me right now because currently I cannot get any picture of my kid on my phone because he does not like to pose like a flower or a building. I am always willing to listen and have tried a few apps on the Play Store that need to be updated for the N5.

Based on the samples the camera does seem very capable (albeit with high level of inconsistency), but it's dynamic range is subpar. Look how much clipping is going on, nothing burned out on the 5S photo while mustache fella's body is clipped all over the place. I guess that's more of a lens issue than sensor, but I do not like that in normal condition (non HDR) you rarely see a photo without clipping.
Certainly is the best in it's price range. I don't expect the best camera in a 350€ phone, but it's very good for what I need it. If I need to take quality pictures, I have my nikon dslr, which blows any phone out of the water anyway.

Yes, you make very good points, I also think its good that it has good dynamic range and optics rather than amazing colours as you can edit those in post. You cant change physical factors like lenses in post. :good:

Exactly, if you look at the N5 versus the others you will notice on both Finn and Jake there are overexposed, blown out portions you don't find on the others. This was a problem with the HTC One as well in my testing.
I am just hopeful Google releases a real fix, not some BS excuse for a camera fix. Having come from the HTC One I am happy with the overall quality of the N5's camera with the following caveats - most photos have to be shot in HDR+ and forget about pics of moving kids. I've actually been doing what was suggested earlier - take video and then quick tap the screen to take many single frames, keep the best. The one issue is if you do want to keep the video it stutters everywhere you took a photo - what the hell is with that!?
To the OP - I applaud your courage to buck the trend and make this review. Everyone's opinion counts!

lol, you didn't address any points brought up in the post you quoted. The dynamic range of the Nexus 5 SUCKS, waaaaaaaay to many highlights blown out, and you can't fix all of it in PP from my experiences.
And for action shots, FORGET ABOUT IT, its a nightmare in frustration. Too slow to load, too slow to focus, unbelievable shutter lag. By the time the picture is taken, the moment is long gone. Unlike other people who say the camera is fine, I don't just take pictures of inanimate objects.
Face it, the only reason you made this post is that you're justifying to yourself that the camera is good

So this camera seems to only take pictures in 1920x1080 (2MP) and is only about 300KB in size. Is there a way to change these settings?
That can also be why the shutter might seem quicker?

Thank you. Im trying to change the way people view it. I think we go in to these camera comparisons looking for the wrong thing. After all these are mobile phones not DSLRs so if you want amazing photography go buy a camera, I just think the Nexus 5 has several tactical advantages that make it slightly better for documenting life than many others, the few miner problems appear to be basic software stuff.

You are claiming the Nexus 5 is the best camera phone we will ever own. No one here is expecting DSLR quality but if I am going to snap a picture when I am out, at this point I am grabbing my wifes HTC One and snapping away.
Maybe after a software update my mind will change but for now, the camera is to slow. Not saying the pictures are bad, it is just waaaaaaay to slow for my needs.
If I want DLSR quality photo's I will use my Nikon but I do want to be able to capture pictures with my phone other then flowers.

Picture and video quality

Omg
I'm trying to capture myself as accurately as possible
When I'm taking pictures with either camera or recording video the picture and video playback looks right.
When I go to transfer them to my computer the quality doesn't look the same as when I took the picture, my skin tone is off, primally, quality etc just looks not as good is it losing quality or something. ? I can be in my vanity mirror, take a picture and see two different people
Makes me self conscious when I'm looking back at them, even though I know it's not an accurate depiction of me but it deters me from wanting to use this camera because when I'm viewing the picture on the device it's much different on computer
This is dysfunctional
Maybe your pc needs an upgrade to the graphics card. 4k screen for it and some software bumps and you will probably see what u see on phone
BAD ASS NOTE 4
The note is 2k, my computer is HD. I only record in 1920x1080, and the camera's are usually on the highest megapixel setting. I just wish the replication was more accurate.

It be to hard to say what it what. You can have hd that is 720 or hd that is 1080. Both hd but night and day difference. Not really sure what you be looking for. I take pic it looks just as good on phone or pc.

Maybe I'll just get a real camera that can take better indoor photos

I hope we are not talking about selfies, lol.
But yes, I will suggest you buy an actual camera if you are trying to go with all that real world qualities and what not.
You can also also buy Camera FV-5 from the playstore, fractions of a real camera and see what that can do for you. It is the most realistic camera shots I have seen out there You can also do a lot of customizations with it that you can with actual cameras...I'm not talking about samsung gimmicks or the many gimmics out there such as blurr and what ever else is out there.
P.S Procamera is also good.
P.P.S...sure its not your lighting? My note 4 camera depict me quite well -cheeky smiles-
Let me know how it goes for you!

Lol no I'm not a fan of selfies and bathroom mirrors I use my tripod 85% of the time. I want to be satisfied with the picture and just upload it and not have to tinker with the photo because it just doesn't look right. But you have a point some lighting it's great others it's just like who the hell is that Lol. That's why I just record videos instead, never really been photogenic but in person I get many compliments it's so funny up me Lol but I rather in real life where it counts then social media
Haha, definitely ...beside, we are our own worst critics!
Happy Holidays!
