Hi,
I'm wondering to know if you know application to avoid black screen during calls for the HTC Hero.
RucaNebas
Yes. On the app store there is a free app called Shake Awake. It detects the movement of pulling the phone away from your ear and activates the screen. The sensitivy can be adjusted.
Thank you very much for your quick replay Paul.
I installed and it seems to work.
Thank you again.
Do you know where I can find cool applications for our Hero?
RucaNebas
Wow, this works very nice.
Thank you

You're very welcome.
I have so far only installed apps from the Android Market.
Excellent find.
Not working on HTC Hero :-((
Do you know why?
Yeah, didn't work on the Hero. I hope they fix that with the update and also that annoying vibrate when the phone connects. While interesting concept it is really not needed. I figure I know when it connects when the other person says hello.
You can use Keepscreen, there is a lite version ;-)
Hi,
you may use the free app calle KeepScreen Lite, too.
This app lets you choose for which apps you want the screen always stay on.
The Hero uses a specific phone app, whose name is different from google standard phone app ... But KeepScreen lets you manually choose the apps you want.
There are two versions of keepscreen : the free one (called lite), which is 'limited' to standard google apps, and two of user's chose. The pay version is unlimited.
edit : bricabrac : you won this one
Thank you guys.
I'm sorry to back again, but I need to understand your explanations.
Do you mean that the KeepScreen Lite application could be installed on the Hero and activates the screen during calls?
Which is the Hero app name that keeps the screen always stay on during calls?
I had already created a thread with regard to the screen switching off during a call here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547736
Shakeawake doesn't seem to work for all and for those it does it can be unreliable.
PowerManager can be set (in a profile) to keep the screen alive when making a call for up to a minute (specify by number of secs... I think) which gives you plenty of time to get past those 'pick 1 to do ... pick 2.... etc' type calls.
Hope this helps
how do i install this " shake awake" program on my foon! new 2 andriod

KeepScreen
if i'm not mistaken the actual phone app should be named "Dialer"
KeepScreen is now completely free, and has in the free version all functionality
ahm, can anyone tell me how do i turn the screen off again after i awoke it? my ear keeps checking notifications :/
fyi...on my hacked sapphire, keepscreen was a little buggy. it would sometimes still allow dialer app to go dark while on call even with the keepscreen app running as confirmed in both notification bar and running apps. also, when rebooting phone, keepscreen requires restart but that is probably normal. for me, i decided i rather not deal with the problem of occasional face/key-press on long calls and just let the device go dark. i've become familiar with the quick-key presses to handle call-swap, speaker-on, and such...
I have shake awake since a while and it works fine.
Keepscreen is nice to keep applications "awake"
How come Skype is not available in the market when it is for all the verizon droids?
Can we sideload Skype? (after root of course) Does anyone know a link towards it?
Thanks!
I would like to know how to do this as well. My boss only likes skype to IM with so it would be great to do it. I am more than willing to try stuff out if someone points me in the right direction...
No native Skyp app for Android yet, however there is Fring (search the Market). It's a mobile client that integrates with many communication/messaging platforms, including Skype. It can even handle videocalls!
A caveat: it's developed by an Israeli startup of some shady provenance. God knows who else will be listening to your conversationgs and reading your chats
ignore this post. apparently i read "k's" as "w's", so i thought we were discussing Swype. Carry on.
Skype not Swype.....
needs some skype. they show it off on the droid commercials. they even say its in the app store. they cant lock it down to verizon only can they?

actually they can. Verizon and Skype have a deal setup. its also going to be impossible to hack since it doesn't use the data connection but actually the regular voice line. since ATT would charge you per minute to use its voice channel it would take the purpose out of skype

so Fring is as close as we'll get then?

Fring is pretty okay, actually. It supports voice, video (for both outward and front-facing camera), and IMs. When you get a Skype call or IM, it rings, just like it should. Voice portion works great over 3G. Video is not restricted to W-Fi, and appears to work quite adequately over 3G as well.

Well I got Skype Lite, which does great text chat which you may be interested in. It does voice calls to skype contacts but it does so by calling a local phone number, so it kinda defeats the purpose of skype.

Hey guys, I was wondering if there was a googlevoice workaround to activate the account on the gtab. It wants to send a txt msg but ofcorse it can't send one cause its not a phone. I've setup slipdroid but it wont register but shows my account when I go to pbx.org was wondering if maybe cause my googlevoice account on this tab couldn't finish setting up. Thanks
Matt
you have to update to the newest release then there is no problems
To follow up on what b3ltazar said, you may need to do the market fix in order to see google voice in the market. After the fix you will see google voice and can do the update. It will work after doing the update.
I have the new market. Running vegan 5.1 I tried the market fix but for some reason I never have and cashe when I got to allocations. Manage and tap on market. Why is this? Google voice is no where to be found in my market. Does anyone have the apk?
Thanks

I have it working... The workaround was to take the google voice on my phone, make a Titanium backup, copy those files over to the tab, and restore through Titanium backup as well. Afterwords, when you start voice, it walks you through the setup process and when it gets to the part trying to find the phone just back out of everything.
I've done this a couple times and it worked pretty well. You can text IF you have a google voice number.
Good luck!

That isn't really necessary anymore. Just update to the latest in the market, make sure the phone number you choose in Google voice has been added to your Google voice account, and text away...
If you don't see it in the market. Then you need to study up on market fixes. It is there in my market using vegaN Beta 5.1 and works fine. I use it everyday to talk to my kids..
I have it and it works great. Love texting from my g tablet

Slightly off-topic: Google Voice, and voice calls from Gtab, and in general?
Hi,
I have a Gmail and Google Voice account, and I guess that one thing that I've never quite understood is what Google Voice is, or is suppose to do, esp. vis-a-vis voice calls.
When I first got signed up for it, and when I'm in Google Voice (on a PC), I know that I can initiate a "voice call", but from what I can tell, the way that that works is that when you do a voice call from Google Voice, you tell it the number that you want to call (the "called number"), then Google Voice calls that called number, and calls you back on your REGULAR phone number. In other words, if the number that I have configured in Google Voice for myself is xxx-xxx-xxxx, when I initiate a call to yyy-yyy-yyyy, I get an incoming call on xxx-xxx-xxxx.
Then, awhile ago, Google announced that you could call from your Gmail account, and I was really surprised when I tried that. When I was in Gmail, I initiated a call to xxx-xxx-xxxx, and, I was able to talk to the called party ON MY PC, i.e., kind of like a "Skype out" phone call.
So, now that I have my Gtab, I was wondering: Is it possible to do the latter thing from my Gtab, i.e., to call a real phone number (xxx-xxx-xxxx) from my Gtab, and talk to that real phone via my Gtab, totally over Wifi on my end?
I've seen some posts and info about setting up sipdroid and pbx something or other, but I'm wondering if it's possible to do with just some combination of Google Voice app and Gmail app on the Gtab?
Thanks,
Jim
What version of Google Voice works for stock rom?
I have the same problem as many in this and 2 other threads.
Unable to get Google voice app to fully install. Does it only install / work on an UNstock gtab?
I can go to google voice in the browser and sent and receive texts, fine. But of course then you get no notification when messages come in.
As I said, I am runnning stock gtab, no mods. I was able to search and found Google voice in the gmarket but it gave me choices to sms or download to phone, or pc. I chose PC.
I click on install and at the screen where it asks for number confirmation, I select my cell phone, it returns error can not verify the number. (it is the same number I used to originally setup the gvoice on pc). I can not get past the voicemail setup page either, skip doesn't work and then back won't work and I am locked up.
There are so many great threads on this forum, but it seems many repeated questions because they remain unanswered, or perhaps there are so many version of tabs, the problems and solutions are ROM specific.
Its almost like we need sub forums, if running this, search here...

I appreciate your reply.
a few questions:
1. is you tab rooted?
(I am reading like crazy to get all this, but there is so much! I thought TB only works on rooted units, but not sure if it requires a certain rom)
2. which rom are you running?
If I ever get this, I'm going to create a matrix: root - rom - apps - working y/n
(former career = ui testing / documenting)

I have gmarket, no mods.
I go to market and see no "updates"
I searched for, and installed google voice, no luck.
I will go back and look up installing gapps, I seem to recall it requires some mods first and that is what I was trying to avoid until I am sure I want to keep the unit.
I am on the fence. I never realized how (don't boo me) "hooked on windows I am" I love my android phone, but when it comes to the things I like to do on a bigger screen, as much as I love the touch feature, I really am so much more productive on a laptop. I'm sure its a learning curve, and I LOVE playing with new technology - and this sight is LOADED with all you need to know about the tab. But I am a step by step person and I feel like I am spending more time searching than learning.
Its just me .. kudo's to all the folks that help and dev here .. its a very amazing team!

Sorry for the delay in repsonding, I didn't have this thread tagged to notify me of replies.
Been busy messing with the new CM7 Beta for the Gtab.
Ok so, answers:
1) Yes my tab is rooted, the stock OS out of the box sucked the big dill pickle. I was rooted and customed within two hrs of taking it out of the box.
2) After messing around with the five or so availale ROMS, I decided to make the VEGAn 5.1 beta my daily driver, it and TnT lite are the most stable IMHO, I chose VEGAn over TnT because the news and weather genie was absent from TnT and the VEGAn web browser offer much more flexibility as far as options go. I'm a news junkie!
Also the On-Screen soft keys on the notification bar [HOME, MENU, and BACK] are fantastic additions since the keys on the device don't light up, which makes it real [email protected]%# when using the device in a poorly lighted room.
3) As for TB, it is my understanding it will only work with rooted devices.
4) It is also my understanding that TB will work with MOST Android devices and most ROMS whether stock or customed. YES TB will work with stock OS ROMS provided the device is rooted. And yes it is possible to Root your device WITHOUT unlocking the BOOTLOADER, both my N1 and GTAB are rooted via this method. N1 with Universal Androot and my GTAB with Z4root.

I don't have many people to call and those I do call i prefer video, but i have placed a few Skype calls on the Gtab and it works just fine for voice. Doesn't give the option for video, almost like it doesn't recognize the camera. i tried Fring and when i go to do a test call it makes a hideous noice and i have to force shut down the app. So for voice Skype is great.
Google Voice in the Market.
For those who after the market fix are still unable to find the google voice app, here is what I found. There are 3 different fingerprints floating around. When I could not find voice in the marketplace I started experimenting with the diffrerent fingerprints, and to my surprise each one gives different search results, with diffrerent apps available / missing. On my tab, with the samsung Tab fingerprint I was able to locate the google voice app, but with the standard mahimahi 2.2 i could not

as the thread title states how to use two way call recordinf feature in nAa-08 kernel.........i didnt find it in settings................. can anybody help
U may find it somewhere in tha settings. Or there must be a app in the market. Search for two way call recorder
Can't find it too...searched everywhere with no luck but some apps from the market works like a charm
whats the function of two way rec? n why is it against the law in some country? ?
Sent from my E15i using xda premium
you can record both sides while taking to phone (your voice and the other side's voice).
until now you could only record your voice and the other one was very silent.
It's against the law to record phone calls in some countries. At least without letting the other side know he/she is being recorded.
Yeah I'm also curious about this feature from the nAn-08 kernel. I've tried some from market and found none that I like. Would love to have some native recording capabilities with MiniCM.
Now you have that option in the last release of Alf Kernel
I got this phone after having an iphone 4s for two years. Prior to that, I had a mytouch 4g for 5 years. Since getting this phone, I am almost in a state of shock. I might just need to adjust, but it is pretty off putting. 75% of what I do with my phone revolves around listening to music and texting, with occasional app use and photo taking here and there (Games, yelp, etc.).
This phone is completely failing me in several categories. I'm not sure if I am just not giving it enough of a chance or what. Here is my experience so far.
I picked this phone specifically because of it's size and hands free features. When driving, I used to give commands to siri to play certain songs, artists, albums, or playlists. This phone will only play songs. It attempts to play albums and artists, but fails in several ways (searches for them in the app or searches for them on the web). Playing playlists doesn't even seem to be an option at this point, and neither does telling the phone to shuffle music.
I have yet to get a real answer on my group messaging does not work. Everybody seems to recommend textra, which I am going to try, but I don't understand why the stock app would botch such a commonly used feature. Messages received from group texts end up all over the place. Some are in the group text, some of them are sent to me as one on one texts, etc. It is miserable.
The pictures taken by this phone are disappointing, but I knew that coming into the purchase.
I might just be in shell shock or something, and I'm going to give it a week or so. The first day with this phone has been a huge let down, however, and all of my research suggests that several of these issues are not actually going to get any better. I get that this might be an incredible phone for some users, but maybe I need to look somewhere else.
Am I wrong?
edit: Through extensive screwing around, group messaging now works.
While this is of little help, with the exception of the camera, your complaint is about Android and not this phone.
I'm curious if the music issue is sufficient to drive you back to iOS?

Well, I use bluetooth to listen to music in my car, and I don't like to look at or touch my phone while driving. Selecting music was the only thing that I ever used siri for. Every other feature of voice recognition seems like it is catered to people who are too lazy to type. The fact that I can't change what music I am listening to or even select a playlist while I am driving is a big setback to me.
I don't know whether your music is on your device or "in the cloud" but if it is "in the cloud" through Google, voice commands for music are totally broken on Android.
You should not leave iOS and think Android will be the same thing. It's a completely new ecosystem, and you might take some months to adapt to it. It's better, but you will take some time to realize it. (I came from an iOS aswell). I didn't get why you left iOS if it seemed to work pretty well for you, though.
For "listening to music and texting, with occasional app use and photo taking here and there", maybe a Samsung with its included apps like S-Voice, Chat-On and such. But don't complain when everything gets slow and it takes eternity to open any app you'd want. Moto X has the best Android experience though.
But anyway, for that kind of average user, I think an iPhone will fit you better.
Your complaints are very specific and a matter of need/taste. While they are real issues for you, they aren't to some others.
I personally think the best thing you can do is get an iPhone 5 and call it a day. I doubt Android will be something you like.
As far as a phone overall goes the Moto x, to me is one of the best out there....and again, your issues are specific and not everyone's....that said, my wife had an s2, hated it and went back to her old, slow 4s iPhone....But after playing with my phone for a few hours, she was blown away and wants one bad now. Just has to save her pennies now. Also...I'm not sure about others, but the pics I've taken have made her want a Moto x even more....She and I agree, they are superior to her 4s.
But that's us.
Again...I don't think you will like this phone or any other Android.....touchless control is about as good as it gets for any Android...so if the Moto x voice command isn't for you.....best to go back to iPhone.
Just my advice.
Sent from my Moto X cellular telephone...
Hey guys,
Thanks for the responses.
I think I managed to sort out some group text stuff. I also found a music app that will stay on shuffle mode and allow me to call out specific artists and albums (not quite as good as ios, but good).
I also agree that these are specific issues for me. I never suggested that they were problems with the ecosystem or problems that everybody would have. It is just a very frustrating experience to switch and have several key features not function. This is coming from somebody who used android phones for 3 years prior to using an iphone.
With a few of those things out of the way, I am going to try this out for another week or so before making a call on hopping back.

iDevices = MP3 player from start then turned into a phone so when it comes to music capabilities they are allways going to be much better then anyother device. because everything was built around them being MP3 player's
Android was built as a phone and slowly they have been adding better music capability and touchless controls and so forth but i will always be a android person because i like to customize my phone to my liking.

I don't think it is an issue about whether voice command is for him or not, I think the issue (and it is an Android issue not specific to Moto X) is that Voice Commands for Google Music are broken.

Yeah. Google and Moto X voice recognition are great. But Google Now isn't as smart as Siri, yet.

I don't think it is an issue about whether voice command is for him or not, I think the issue (and it is an Android issue not specific to Moto X) is that Voice Commands for Google Music are broken.

Yes...and it's relatively new...give it time.
Make a tasker app to shuffle or play a playlist...all started with voice command. Best we can do for now.

And as said already....if playing music with voice commands is anyone's top phone priority...which seems to be the case here, since OP is thinking of returning phone over it......get an iPhone. Yes, they started out a music device.....so stands too reason it'll work better.

I didn't even know that you could create custom voice commands with tasker. That actually changes quite a bit. I'm more than willing to substitute customizable voice control for the pretty fleshed out control that Siri has.
I had to return mine because of the camera and broken exchange on 4.4. I am anxiously awaiting a fix for both. Yes I know you can sideload a different exchange services but I didn't want to root my none DE x.
Plus I expect another sale to come in the next month or two even after the price drop.

Not really voice commands....more like virtual screen touches. As far as I know anyway. Look in moto x apps section. I made a tasker app to start music and shuffle. Can start it by voice. Tasker makes it that you need to be rooted tho....no idea why.
So without root...it wont work.

Why not just use touchdown exchange app for exchange services. Works awesome than stock email app.

Can you or someone give me some direction on this? I DON'T want to move to another messaging app. I want to use the stock app for messaging AND be able to group text. Of course, most know by now that you cannot select a contact GROUP as an option to text to.
Please help with this. Is there some workaround, hack, app development, or play store app that can allow me to use stock messaging app for group sms? Primarily what I want is to be able to send a group text without having it input all their names, but just select the group contact to do so

Well, I fixed my issues with imessage and switched to textra. I am not sure if I would still have a problem if I was on the stock app.
One of the main advantages of android is the ability to substitute the apps used for key functions. I agree that the stock app should absolutely be able to handle this if a third party app can't, but you shouldn't be afraid to switch to a third party app. It is a very easy process, and it will retain all of your past messages.

Well, from what I hear, Textra won't work with Motorola assist. Does someone know of an app that just adds an option on contacts to send text from groups on contacts?
Have you tried Hangouts for SMS?
