Galaxy Notes on M21 - Samsung Galaxy M21 Questions & Answers

Hey all!
The only reason I changed to Samsung M21 was my need to read notes on my phone I wrote in Samsung Notes on other device (Samsung Galaxy Tab S4). And I was very surprised and disappointed, when I reallized they don't allow to update Samsung Notes app on M21 to the latest version. Now it's 3.* on M21 and 4.* on Tab S4, so it even doesn't show me my notes. It is funny, but cheaper A20 has 4.* version. It returns with error if I try to install latest .apk of the app, Galaxy Store shows only 3.*.
Are here any solutions? Maybe, some custom ROM or kinda forced installing?

Probably because M21 has One UI Core. Sadly, there's nothing you can do about it if you're not rooted.

Thank you for the answer, Fredin_. It is no problem to root the phone, isn't it? My previous phones were rooted, so I had a little experience. Could you please tell more about solutions after I do it.

It shouldn't be a big deal, nothing is broken for me and banking apps work after hiding the magisk app, using magisk hide and passing safetynet, though I did come across one app that refused to work.
You need to disable signature verification somehow (the easiest way would be to use luckypatcher) and install the apk using Split APK Installer using the root method. If that doesn't work, you can try installing the app as a system app, most apps should work with either of these methods.
But if you are happy with android 10, then an even better alternative would be to use Totsuka OS. It's a OneUI port, so you can just install stuff from the galaxy store or playstore.

Yeah, then Totsuka will be good for you, pretty much bugless. Don't forget to flash the keystore fix after flashing it tho.
Good luck.

Nice

Ditch SNotes now or it will bite you even harder. Samsung is notorious for lack of legacy support with this apk, as I know all too well. Cut&pasted more of these notes than I care to remember to salvage them
I use ColorNote now. You can hyperlink directly from them so you can use it for saving bookmarks too. It will store backups on a SD card and you can export backups to the PC.
This app it's self doesn't need internet connection to function... in fact I always block it with Karma Firewall.
Save an installable copy of it if you decide to use it... never trust Playstore.

Can I trick an app into thinking i gave her premissions? (no root)

I have an app which asks for permission to my contacts in order to start. (She is installed but won't work until ill give her the permission for my contacts).
Is there any way to make her think she has Permissions to my contacts without giving her?
Or to hide the real contacts so she won't be able to see them?
I looked around and saw Xprivacy but I have no root so is there any other option?
Thank You

That app is a big no-no here on xda, so i suggest you edit your post and remove it.
Can you provide more details, like your device and your android version? Xprivacy works up to marshmallow, if you're on Nougat you can try xposed extension protect my privacy, but i think it requires root too.
Since your have xposed installed, why don't you install root? I'm assuming you have a custom recovery to flash xposed so root should not be an issue.

I do remember an app that used to decompile and recompile apks while removing permission requirement, but that was old and i can not remember the exact name, maybe try an app that gives you access to appOps on your rom to control access from there?

what are the pros and cons (if any) of Magisk over SuperSU ? i apologize if this is

i searched for some info but couldn't find any at a glance so perhaps I will just ask you guys. I apologize if this is a FAQ and i just missed it. i have supersu. i wonder if i should move to Magisk ?
1. what are the pros of Magisk
2. any downsides of Magisk ?
3. is there any tutorial for converting from SuperSU to Magisk ? i managed to get TWRP and SuperSU because someone else did it on my phone. that person is no longer be able to help. different country different timezone. not a friend either. it was a paid service done in Hongkong where and when I bought the phone.
again I apologize if this is a FAQ. I'm a noob. I hope you guys can point me in the right direction. I just want to set this phone right from the get go. it's a virgin phone. haven't install anything yet. well i install Titanium Backup just to make sure root is working. 99% virgin i guess. thank you for any help and pointers
EDIT # 1 : forgot to add this is about Samsung Galaxy S9+ S9650 Snapdragon running 8.0 just in case it matters to those who want to contribute some info
EDIT # 2 : most likely won't be using this phone for Android Pay, SnapChat. but I would like to use this phone for banking apps. i'm not really into snapchat, instagrams, etc. me old timer

Open source. Actively maintined. Root hiding. Systemless modifications. Big community. Etc...
Possibly not compatible with as many devices as SuperSU was.

Is supersu even being developed anymore? I'd love to have at least some sort of crappy Plan B as it looks like magisk has a possibility of dying.

I'm sorry, but I'm not able to find it on the Galaxy Store.
Edit: Nevermind. Turns out I'm not really good at searching things on the internet.
You can dowload it from apkmirror and sign it with apk-signer. Then install goodlock and the modules. But it don't change anything in M30s
I Hope it will Work with Android 10.

That is very disappointing.
I need a little help for M30. Few days ago samsung released AOD(Always On Display) update in galaxy store which was showing error during install (on M30 devices) and then suddenly Samsung pull that update back from store but the update worked for M30s devices and sideloading apk doesn't work for M30. Only apk released through galaxy store will install as update for AOD. I request if anyone M30s user here who got update of AOD recently through glalaxy store could make a backup of it with any apk backup app and share that apk here. It would be a big favor for us M30 users. Thanks in advance.

oh, ok. I gave up anyway. and the thing i've noticed is that m series use one UI 2 core whereas the high end samsung phones use One UI 2 full(or something like that). so probably samsung gives only basic features of the One UI.

[Module] NFC Screen Off

NFC Screen Off
Read NFC tags when screen is off.
Disable NFC tagging sound.
Tap to pay when screen is off.
ALWAYS include Magisk installation logs when posting an issue.
Useful integrations: NFC Card Emulator Pro - Tasker
Installation metrics: Grafana dashboard
How does it work?
The NFC app is patched during installation into a `modded` version. This `modded` version is injected at boot time by service.sh so that the phone thinks the screen is always on and unlocked.
This patch only applies to NFC Service so it does not impact any other functionality of the phone that involves screen state detection.
The `modded` app was generated using this method.
Help section
MY NFC IS NOT DETECTED ANYMORE
If you did not unlock your device since last boot, unlock it and wait 30 seconds for the module to be loaded.
After that time, if NFC does not start automatically or manually, it means that the patch does not work for your device. You can uninstall the module and create an issue.
I AM STUCK IN A BOOTLOOP
Remove the module manually.
1. Boot into TWRP
1. Advanced -> File Manager
1. Delete /adb/modules/NFCScreenOff
1. Reboot
THE MODULE IS NOT WORKING SINCE LAST UPDATE
Perform a clean reinstallation.
1. Uninstall the module
1. Reboot
1. Install the module

If it does not solve your problem, you can create an issue.

Not yet. It's on the To-Do list.
Thanks for enabling this option.
It may not necessarily be a bad thing that it breaks safety net.
Enabling mobile payments while phone is locked is NOT a good idea. Your phone will be vulnerable to money theft with some special NFC devices. They can get close to your phone while it is in your pocket or purse and that is enough for them to steal your money.

Yes it should continue to work normally with Google Pay.
What I meant in the description of the module is:
For now, it only works for reading NFC tags. For payments in stores, the phone still needs to be at least on. If the module is working for tags but breaks your payments, leave a comment.
Is it the case for you? The module works for NFC tags but the payments are broken?
What are your specs (device, rom, android version)?

From what I understand from feedbacks, the apk app can have several names:
NfcNci
NQNfcNci
NpxNfcNci
Those names do not depend of the device but depend of the ROM.
Two apk with the same name will in fact be different. They are very related to the framework of the ROM.
Loading an APK from another ROM even if it is the same Android version will have little chance to work.
I cannot detect all the specs of the device. Magisk only gives me the Android SDK Version that's all.
I could make an apk for every ROM.
2 possibilities:
- Zip framework.apk + (NQ/Npx)NfcNci.apk, send it to a server. The server will return a custom apk just for your ROM. This is the one that Magisk will use.
- Build the custom APK directly on the phone, but I cannot find how to run apktools, jarsigner, etc on Android (because there is no JAVA env on Android)

Yes I extracted the zip and modified the customize/service.sh scripts to properly work with my rom and as you stated it did not work. as soon as the script killed the nfc service it triggered a reboot to recovery.
I PM'd you a gdrive link to the stock apk's from the razer phone 2 Pi stock rom. If you have some time would please build it for me? I tried to do it myself a while ago but ran out of steam before i even got all the dependencies running on my computer lol. I can modify your magisk package to work with it myself.
I like your idea of a server that automatically runs the process to patch the apk. Would every use need to upload both the framework.apk and nfcnci or just the nfc? The only concern I would have is bandwithd as the framework apk is 30+ MB's. If you could build the server into a docker container I think it would be easy enough for others to host you could probably find some people willing to host it for free. Another option could be using a google drive account to allow people to upload the apk's for their phone then batch process them all and sort them by model/build # or something to cover most phones/roms . I have a gapps for business account with unlimited storage I could probably lend for this purpose
Once again thanks for all your work! If you have a bitcoin address i'd like to buy you a beer

Help to de-google my phone

G'day
I'm sick of google and everything they are about. Don't be evil my arse. I already do the simple stuff like using brave browser and duck duck go search. I'm hoping someone can advise me on how to strip my phone of as much google as possible and replace with aosp alternatives. Or even just point me towards some guides on it.
I am using a Samsung galaxy a22 5g rooted with magisk stock rom.
Thanks
I think you might want to flash a custom ROM, then use something like MicroG Magisk, NanoDroid or FOSSApps. Ungoogling an already Googled stock ROM might be more pain than flashing something community developed.
I'm currently running Lineage with Magisk GApps (so I can remove them anytime) and I'm slowly getting ready for the transition. So I'm also looking for more information.
I set up a VPS for myself (might be an overkill for you, but inspiration nonethelss) and I'm hosting OnlyOFFICE Community there and using their apps, I also host my own BitWarden password storage and a mail server (was kinda pain to set it up with all the methods for spam verification). This way some of my most sensitive data is kept on an encrypted drive on a server I myself control.
Then there's getting apps which are mainly available through Google Play - I found that uptodown does host apks, but that's far from an actually viable option (considering you really have to trust them when you're downloading apps there). Alternative stores providing the same apps as Google Play are always kinda worrying to use & trust.
So that's my two cents worth and a starting point, I'll also gladly accept some tips & tricks to accomplish this entirely, it's a long-lasting dream to leave Google altogether.

system/product/app

Hey thanks for the reply and info. Flashing an aosp custom rom would be my usual go to. However I've been on an oppo with unlockable bootlader for last 18 months and now I got this samsung I find there is zero rom dev on this phone. The only options I can find are GSI which is a new concept to me and I'm a little uncertain about going that route.

Do you think I should go with a GSI rom? If safe and stable I'm happy to do the research because I'd love to get a custom aosp rom going on this.
Afaik this samsung can't even access fastboot gotta use the Samsung flashing software instead and the only thread on twrp for this phone is experimental and doesn't seem to be confirmed as working by anyone.
Hence why so far I've stuck with stock and magisk
I used to flash heaps of roms and kernels on older devices but this whole GSI thing is new to me. If it's dicey I'll go the TB route with the folders you pointed me to. Cheers

if not , you will have to reflash the stock if anything goes wrong ...

Cool cheers for your help mate. Touche on the last point. New job with nice pay bump coming so that will be the go I think.
I use Graphene OS on my Pixel 6 and CalyXOS on the 4a. Both are very good degoogled ROMs.
I built a Magisk module for this some time ago. However, it's very likely that it won't work anymore and will probably cause a bootloop. I'm only posting it in case someone wants to use the repo as inspiration.

you forgot to mention that both GrapheneOS and CalyXOS are available ONLY for the Pixel phones
and the Pixels have a unique feature - the bootloader can be locked back AFTER flashing a custom ROM
