Impossible to re-lock bootloader? - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

Hi there,
I'm currently trying to re-lock the bootloader of my Xperia XZ1C. I already flashed to stock firmware.
Like some people have issues to unlock the bootloader (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/sony-xperia-xz1-sov36-bootloader-unlock-issuae-issue.4182675/), FlashTool fails the same way for me to re-lock.
As soon as I start BLU, the tool fails with ERROR-Cannot invoke "String.split(String)" because the return value of "java.util.Properties.getProperty(String)" is null.
fastboot oem lock does not work either (unknown command).
Is there any known way how to re-lock the bootloader?
Thanks in advance!

Reinstall fastboot ADB, install a newer version

[TOOL][Windows][Script]Get & Install Latest Official ADB & Fastboot Drivers
Most ADB-FASTBOOT installers are provided in UPXed .EXE-file format hence it's not transparent what they are internally doing unless you decompile it. So I decided to write the whole thing as a Windows CMD script thus everyone should can read...

You cannot re-lock the XZ1c bootloader.
All of the guides for unlocking emphasize that pretty clearly.

No, they won't. The phone has been out for many years, and a large number of very smart people have tried.
And if they used an eFuze or something then it's definitely irreversible.
Don't get the person's hopes up with "maybe one day".
For all intents and purposes, the answer is no.

You're kidding, right? If you started _exploring_ whether there was a way, then until you solve the problem, it's still not possible until you actually do it.
Your attempts don't change that, though we could potentially say "you can't right now, but some folks are working on trying."
if I tell you I'm trying to build a time machine, does that mean time travel is possible? Of course not. That only changes when it's successful.

Very few, and I mean probably like 5% of all nexus one's can relock their bootloader. It's some special Holiday edition or something.
But as of right now, no you can't relock it.

Just out of curiousity, when you say "holiday edition", are you referring to the N1s given to Google employees before the phone was released, or is this just a clever way of acknowledging the good luck of those who got a re-lockable phone?
If the latter, is there any pattern by which one can recognise these phones (serial number, manufacturing date/facility, etc.), or is it just luck of the draw?

I'm not 100% sure but I believe "Holiday edition" refers to the special versions of the phones that have the battery cover with a QR code in it, as said QR code leads to a special holiday game when scanned on the Nexus One. Serial number can't be used to determine which Nexii (Nexuses?) can be relocked and which can't. The easiest way to tell if a Nexus One can be relocked is to power it off, hold the track ball, and power it on again. This boots into the bootloader where you will see on the second line something like "NEXUSONE PVT SHIP S-ON." 'S-ON' means that the bootloader can not be relocked while 'S-OFF' indicates a device can be easily be relocked by running a simple fastboot command from your computer, ''fastboot oem lock." I hope this answers your question.
I know the Nexus One has already been successfully rooted without unlocking the bootloader, but I still hope we can figure out a method for relocking the bootloader. I don't mean to scam warranty, I just hate that awful lock icon on the boot screen.

Shouldn't it be possible to simply flash the SPL from a re-lockable phone onto a phone that (before) couldn't?

Unfortunately, no this is not possible. Trying to do so would most likely lead to a bricked handset as the retail devices have a 512k spl and the engineering spl from holiday phones is 768k in size.

It will not brick the phone. It will work fine for what it's meant to do. Here's a quote from the page
What will be the end result of your Nexus One:
It will reset your system files to the original System Files
It will reset your kernel/boot image to the original shipping boot image
It will reset your recovery to original recovery
The only thing we will not be able to do at this time is to RE-LOCK your Nexus One.

Note that this does not re-lock the device which is what this thread is about. As of right now, there is no way that has been made publicly visible to relock the bootloader of an unlocked S-ON Nexus One. Maybe in the future there will be a way. I hope so, but for now, we're stuck. The method from the link can be used only to restore your phone to the stock ROM, so that you can once again receive OTA updates. It will take away your root priveleges, which I'd assume is the reason you've unlocked your device in the first place. So unless you're tired of being in control of your device, it's pointless.

Should I do OEM Lock after flashed stock+unroot?

Hi,
Few hours ago I used Nexus toolkit to return to stock rom + unrooting.
I think everything went smoothly bc's it booted succsesfuly into the fist stage of the set the language of the device.
I heard that people bricked thier devices after OTA updating - That b'cs something with the Bootloader...("Somthing" is bc's I dont know if it happened due to leaved it Unlocked or proceed the
"Relock Bootloader"(OEM Lock).
So, What should I do?
Leave unlocked OR excute "Relock Bootloader"(OEM Lock)
???
Thank you!
I've seen many comments in these forums from experienced members saying that unless you're really paranoid about security you should leave it unlocked so that you have at least the possibility to recover from bricking.
Thanks for the quick replay @dahawthorne
So...you think it someting that happened to some particularly users and NOT a comprehensively issue that happaned to many android users that unlocked the device before?
P.S: am using the Nexus Toolkit by WugFresh.
For relock the BL - Just push on "OEM Lock", right?
Thank you!!

You do understand that I'm recommending leaving your device *unlocked*, right...?
@shabydog: For heaven's sake man, don't lock your bootloader as it's a lot easier to recover the device if the bootloader is unlocked. Google has made it easier to recover a bricked device by offering the full system in an OTA package, but despite that, you still shouldn't lock the bootloader.
@dahawthorne @Strephon Alkhalikoi @NLBeev
Conclusion: I must leave the bootloader LOCKED.
And as long I did not touched the "OEM Lock" under Relock bootloader ==> i'm safe, right?
Thank you all so much.

More power of a transmitter does not mean the receiver is fine tuned.
I love first world problems. So after another thread to ask about flashing a Nexus back to stock, he has to open a separate thread for locking the bootloader.
@shabydog If it gives you this much stress, don't do anything. You have it, as I understand, back to stock, it's working, just put it back in its box, and sell it, or keep it, I don't care, but you should really not touch it.

Just confusing with learmimg something that I dont know.
But I just love it so much!!!!!!!!
I know you'r familiar with - deeply into that.
I want to learn...sometimes it's hard for me so it takes time.

Bootloader unlock after relock

Just wanted to confirm from somebody that unlocking the bootloader after relocking it isn't a problem.
ie; Unlock > Relock (to recieve ota or go back to stock) > Unlock again at future time.
I know in the past with other phones, this could cause problems.

I haven't seen anyone actually re lock it. It fails unless you run the command a few times in the right order. You don't need to lock it again for anything. You can use RSDlite to flash the new firmware (whole package) using the servicefile instead of the flashfile and it won't wipe any data. Just like applying an update.

It's in the firmware package. When you extract it, RSDlite will will use one or the other. Flashfile wipes data, servicefile does not.

Thanks. Just got around to downloading it and I see what you mean. RSD just does a fastboot flash for you and if you use the servicefile, it omits the "fastboot erase userdata" command. I remember when RSD would boot to Motorola's own download mode similar to Samsung's and Odin. I see it just uses fastboot now.

None that I can confirm. They locked them with new methods.
Unlocking by official means will always work. Meaning meet the carriers criteria, like activating the device on their network for 60 days (each carrier is different) then requesting unlock.
I've heard of unlock services, but never needed to try so cannot confirm.

although you're asking in the totally wrong place I'll tell you this:
It's probably not possible. New phones are locked down tight. If it is possible, expensive equipment is probably needed. Your best bet is to see if there's an unlocking service on eBay. If there's not, it's a pretty good indication that it's not possible at the moment. If there is, it'll be pretty cheap and worth paying someone else to do. Now hit thanks for highjacking my thread.

I've been reading for hours now about how to unlock the Nokia 8 TA-1012 bootloader, now that Nokia's official method is defunct.
Can someone clarify if this service, which seems to be reasonably priced, will lead to me having the actual unlock.key for keeps and, more importantly, will this enable me to unlock critical?

Hello, in my case in December 2021 it was the first time I tried it and it went well, you have to strictly follow the instructions (make sure before you start that you have the correct connection with the PC in my case with W10-64b, the telephone connected, recognized, with ADB mode and "Unlock bootloader" activated and the ADB environment and tools running on the PC) and be patient since unlocking the bootloader with the Unlock Tool has 2 stages (the second I think I remember is the "critical unlock") so you have to let it go to the end. Once the bootloader is unlocked, when you restart the phone you will get a message that will always appear when you restart it, warning you that the bootloader is unlocked. Beware that by doing so the phone will be reset to factory settings and all user data will be lost so make sure to make a backup before. At the end of the unlock process you will also be asked if you want to donate through PayPal any amount of money voluntarily to the developers of the Unlock tool/techmesto. In short, the key is to read the instructions very well and follow them exactly. After the unlocking of the bootloader and the installation of the Treble you can now put any custom ROM. I hope the whole process goes well for you.

Thank you very much for the detailed advice. If I can bother you for one more thing, there's multiple Treble threads/guides on here and some seem (!) outdated or conflicting. Could you maybe point me to one guide/thread you recommend? I have the Nokia 8 TA-1012 here.
I've flashed and rooted maybe half a dozen phones over the years while always just lurking and reading here but in this case, it seems so much riskier and complicated, so I appreciate any and all advice.

Is it possible to change S20 FE G781B to G781U?

I was wondering if it is possible to flash G781U firmware on G781B since they have the same specs.
would love to hear what you think (or know).

I'd keep the B model as it is as it can have it's bootloader unlocked. if you're taking that phone to the states someone would gladly buy it off you as is.
if you wanted updates after moving they could easily be manually downloaded and flashed. if you concerned about frequency bands then maybe there are ways to tackle that.

not sure to be honest, I suspect that the existing bootloader would generate a fail error before or just after you started but I can't say for sure.
if it did fail after starting to flash you'd need B firmware on hand to make it useable again.

hm... I just learned that there may be no OEM unlocking option on my snapdragon device. There really is a lot to consider... Somehow OEM unlocking does not work on snapdragon devices from north america. In latin america although this might work. I don't really get what the point of all this is. [some sauce]

Yeah, from what I understand devices with U at the end of their model number are missing the OEM unlocking option. I think its stupid to only block the option to some of the world, I mean either block it completely or dont block it at all.
Maybe it is possible to change your model to W and then unlock it, I im not wrong you are supposed to be able to flash W firmware on your U device without unlocking the bootloader.
Just make sure you download firmware with the same binary number in the baseband (the fifth number from the right)

Unlike the original poster I am trying to go from SM-G781W to SM-G781B (or anything else that has german language).
To my understanding Samsung does this as the carriers in North America are requiring it, but not sure why.
