Moving Apps from Pixel 3XL to 4XL - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Can a Swift Backup (or other method) be used to move my apps to my new 4XL from my old 3XL? Thanks!

If you think you will EVER root your phone, you should unlock the b/l immediately upon opening the box. If you never will, or purchased a locked phone:
The first time you start the 4XL up it asks you if you want to transfer everything over via cable from your old phone. The cable is included. If you already started your device and declined this you can wipe and start over. Just make sure on the 3XL the regular Google backup is on and fully sync'd including photos BEFORE you start with the cable transfer. The 4XL is an awesome phone and the face unlock will make you forget all about that fingerprint sensor right away. Enjoy your new phone!

Yes, I've used Swift Backup to restore my apps from a Pixel 2XL to a 4XL and vice versa.

[Q] Nexus 6 not creating device backup after tap & go?

Hi all
This one is puzzling me. When I got my N6 a few weeks back, I set it up by using tap & go, and holding my old Galaxy S5 up to it. Everything went fine, apps settings etc all crossed over no problem.
So today I'm rooting the N6, and naturally I've gone into backup menu to check everything's ticked and a recent backup done. All up to date, great.
So I went ahead and unlocked bootloader with NRT (wipes device). I then go through the setup process on the device, hit restore, and guess what? No N6 backup. Huh??
So all I can do is setup as new device. I later discovered I can view my android devices in Google on the PC, and looking at it, the N6 had never registered itself on there as a device. Until today, presumably when I just set it up as a new device.
My question then, is of "tap & go". Is it the case that if you use this method, the new device thinks bugger it I'm all set up now I don't need to register myself in Google device backup? Even though my device has been properly set to back up. Or am I missing a trick here?
Puzzled. Right, now to install as many apps as I can remember I had!
It seems to be unrelated to tap and go as many of us are having backup issues.
Right ok, I think as it registered itself when I set up as new the second time round I drew the conclusion it was the tap & go. So I wonder if it's a device specific problem or a lollipop issue then?

[Q] No Shamu backups available during setup wizard??

I must have installed a dozen or more ROMs since I got this phone, but never has it had any backups available during initial install wizard. It still lists my Note 4 backups though and it's been months. :/ Is there any way to force it to backup to Google?
do you have backup my data and restore checked in backup & reset(main settings)?

Yes, and I double check, just to be sure.
I dont believe that custom GAPPS packages have the ability to backup to Googles Servers. I have only been able to get stock builds (Odex or Deodex) to backup. Anything else never does.
The same issue was on prior versions of Android with restoring of WiFi accounts and stuff.
Thank you, that makes sense. I guess I would have to setup a stock ROM the way I like it, use it for a bit and then restore that to a custom ROM. Any idea how often it makes these backups? I only ran a stock ROM on it for about a day or so.

It is really weird because I was running stock unrooted for about 3 days and when I un-encrypted and rooted I still didn't have a backup on Nexus 6-I had to restore a backup of my Nexus 5 from like 3 weeks ago...this is very strange and I don't know what is causing the issue...

Interesting, I wonder if there are others who have the same issue. Thanks for chiming in.
and i was running an aosp build, with root, when i wiped and had a backup of my n6 as an option to restore. it does seem as many arent getting an option to restore a n6 backup.
I have one back up from the first day I got my nexus and haven't had it backup since. Its a little frustrating.
Same here the only backups it shows is from an HTC One Max I had for like a week or so.

I've had the same experience. I've factory resetted a few times since I got the phone and in none of them had I gotten restore. Is there a way to view the date of last backup made?

Not AFAIK, only when running the OOBE wizard does it list previous backups. This is something Google should implement in it's device manager, so you can delete old crap, check backup status and force a backup.
I was wondering if I was the only one that was experiencing this. Hope to see a fix soon.

I have a similar issue.
I have a backup. I did a factory reset 2 days ago, and the initial setup showed a nexus 6 backup but it was 16 days old...
I was using the phone every day, on LTE and on WiFi but the backup stopped 16 days earlier for no reason.
Do not know why, didn't change anything, i was on stock the whole time. The only thing i did was changing the dpi(like 5 weeks ago). That is why i did the factory image flash/reset.
This is an issue with Google, and its been there for a long time.
Before lollipop we just didn't see the backup screen so we didn't know that it was working or not.
Sometimes after a factory reset my WiFi passwords came back sometimes they didn't. And.And this was prior lollipop.
It looks like the issue is still there but now we can actually see if we have a backup or not...

I always had fresh backups when I had a Note 4, the Note 3 and the Note 2. My wife has had a Galaxy phone since the S2 and never had that issue either. Seems to be a Nexus thing, to me.

I had a note 2, and used Samsung account for backup also, and that worked well.
Could be a nexus issue, but i don't know whats the cause.
I remember updating the Google play services manually from apk mirror(with the correct version OFC). Maybe that broke the backup process.
Not really a big deal for me but its certainly a problem for many.
I got my Nexus 6 about 2 weeks ago and I was running into this same issue. I went to the Google Play website and noticed there were no entries for the Nexus 6 regardless of how many times I reset. I thought maybe it was because I initially used that "tap and go" feature and chose my old Droid Maxx, but even after resetting it and setting up as a new device, the phone still didn't show up in Google Play.
For giggles, I did another reset and "set up as a new device", and it again did not show up in Google Play. I then decided to go into "Backup and reset" on the phone, turn off "Back up my data" and turned it back on again (with the phone still logged into the Google account), and at that point it "Registered" and shows up in Google Play, and so far, to this day, shows a present date for "Last Used" (knocking on wood).
I have not yet reset my phone since this has happened, so I cannot tell you if it backed up my settings and apps or not, but at least it is now showing in Google Play as a device.
Hope this helps to either work around the issue or find a solution to the issue.
I flashed back to stock today and it was showing my nexus 6 backups that it took off euphoria os and it had no problems restoring my data. I was running euphoria yesterday, so it seems our devices are backing up but it's not visible to restore unless you are on a stock rom :/
Edit:
I re-installed euphoria and this time the backups were available to restore, so maybe euphoria is the first rom that I've come across that has fixed the issue.

HELP : Phone asking for PIN instead of Fingerprints after MarshMallow update.

Hi,
I'm in need of help urgently!
Last week I had updated my Note 5 to MarshMallow and it was working fine. I remember the phone had never been off or restarted after the update until today when the battery ran out. Connected to charger and when I turned on the mobile it showed this message :
"Enter PIN instead of using fingerprint recognition after restarting device to protect fingerprints"
Now I've been unlocking screen using fingerprints from the time I got this phone. Unfortunately, I forgot the PIN and now I can't use fingerprints to unlock the screen. After a few failed attempts the wait time keeps increasing and now it has reached 30 minutes.
Is there anyway I can unlock my phone?
Please help ASAP!

On the MM build, after a reboot you have to use the pin but subsequent times will be fingerprint, I have no idea why they did this. Sorry that happened to you, I have no idea how to get around that other than to keep searching, someone else had had that happen I'm sure.
Yep, I'm screwed, too...
I even kept a list of every iteration of PIN numbers I would ever use (they are generated by an algorithm). I have tried every one - and I am still locked out - with 60 minutes in between tries!
I have very, very important legal documents, notes, and recordings on my phone that I didn't get to backup yet. Unfortunately, most backups do not "dig" well enough under App directories to get all files generated by all Apps. So sad...
And "No", I can't access any sdcard or SIM bc it's an S6 edge+, and they are all locked into the case! The supposed Samsung "unlock" feature does not work, though it says it does.
Dying here! HELP...

You're screwed really and this is why a lot of devs on here say to make backups! Your only option at this point is a firmware reinstall..

But without root, I can't find a backup that will catch all the files well nested under App directories. With root, there are too many "gotchas" nowadays.
Besides, I know I have tried every PIN I would have ever set - so this MM "PIN" is a joke! There should have been a warning, as this is a serious disruption of service.
Wiping is just not an option - I have files created Friday, before the Upgrade, which would not have gotten backed up anyway. Besides, No update should block data access. One of you Gurus can't think of a workaround or push Samsung or Google for a fix? I'm thinking more like "Class Action Lawsuit" for disrupting normal access to my data and my lawsuit...
Anyone else that pissed?

You need to learn to "manually" back your stuff up yourself and don't rely on any programs/apps to do it...
There's seriously nothing the dev community could do because for 1 it's not the right way to go about this because if someone's phone is stolen or whatever basically they'd be able to come to XDA-Developers and find a way around the phone being locked for 2 that's definitely not what devs do, we don't look for ways to break into a phone or circumvent the security. You should have backed up anything you knew was important, simple as that .. You need to factory reset at this point. Sorry.

How do I require pin at startup

I have a Pixel 4 XL and just like I had on the Note 8 I would like to require a pin at startup. I know the phones encrypted already but I would like that extra layer of security. Does anyone know if such a thing exists on my Pixel 4 XL and could you point me in the right direction please. I've been looking everywhere on settings and I can't find it if it's there. Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

Do you mean in addition to face unlock, you also want a pin to unlock the screen? Or do you just want a PIN to unlock the screen? I don't think the first question is possible without and app or mod. The second one would just require you to not use face unlock, and use a PIN/pattern instead. Hope I explained that clear enough :good:

I believe you need to have a locked bootloader and the phone be encrypted for that option to appear after setting pin/pattern/password lock option. I could be wrong and this could be completely removed for this phone. I unlock bootloader day 1 but I don't see the option

Good chance our phone doesn't do it if you're completely stock and the option isn't there.
Edit: found this regarding the pixel and I imagine it's accurate for the 4.

You get a prompt on that phone before the lock screen and android boot? Pin after reboot is there and requires you apply the pin/pattern/password after the phone restarts but that's AT the lock screen and not BEFORE it.
Edit: booted up my recently wiped 2xl and the option isn't there in settings either. I think you're referencing pin after reboot to get through the lock screen, which exists. I'm talking about pin to boot the phone, which is before android even boots up.

Yes it is. The new encryption works the following way, if you have your device powered off:
Secure-Start on Stock Android is default ever since the Android 10 update. It can't be deactivate, thus no longer be activated manually.
Until the lock screen appears on pixel 4/4XL, the device simply boots the stock system partition without loading user data, since Android 10 uses a more recent technology for encryption.
If the PIN is then entered on the lock screen, the user data is decrypted, and only then. If you have many apps and/or folders on the home screen of the Launcher, this is especially noticeable, because the first login and building of the home screen then takes much longer than on older Android versions.
There may still be OEMs that change this specific new Android behavior. This is very stupid IMHO. Because if an OEM deliberately disables secure-start as default setting and lets the user decide, it leads to confusion. Just think about it, if a user reads the above change and thinks "oh my device is already in that mode", he wouldn't even look for this option to enable it and run unencrypted.

PIN on booting phone is where you set a SIM PIN so the SIM has to be unlocked on boot.
Greetings. I have a similar problem. My phone starts everything every time I turn it on. All network connections are active. GSM, WIFI, Bluetooth. The pc connection also works! I don't want to enter a sim pin code! There is currently an incoming call even if I do not enter the unlock code. So the phone works on its own without permission! I want the phone to do nothing until I enter the pin code. This is currently just a screen lock, I switch any form. There is no obstacle protection. You can answer a call after stealing your phone! All you need is another sim card. This is not security! My phone Honor 20 is independent. Thanks for the help!

should we restore our backups after hard reset

Hi there community,
revolted because of battery life on my pixel (pixel 4 xl) I did few moments ago hard reset, to give it a try. Battery level droped ca. 45% in few hours doing nothing ( I don't have any new apps or somethig new on phone) During this initial setup, I was wondering should we restore our backups 1-1, will this just give us our problem back, or somehow this will be avoided? (to be clear, I am not thinking that HardReset will 100% resolve the problem, just want to give it a try)
I hope you understood my dilemma and my english

If you mean allow Google backup to restore your apps then YES, it is perfectly safe (and a big time saver). You may have to reset again to get that option. In my experience, once you use the phone and start setting it up, the restore option is not offered again. If you are talking about another type of backup like Titanium Backup, then you would allow Google to restore first and then run TiBu afterwards to restore your remaining user apps. As far as battery performance there are many ways to track down the culprit(s), BUT a fresh start is always a good thing for phone performance and stability. Best of luck! :good:
@v12xke
Thank You for Your clear response. I did restored the apps from the google one, but I thought it would be possible to restore settings also (e.g. app folders and their position, ringtone, widgets and similar).
Maybe now is not such a big deal, I have started from beginning, but is this possible for the future and if it is, should it be done?
and I will check TiBa, thanks once again.

You're welcome. I use a combination of Google backup, Titanium Backup (requires root) and Nova Launcher. Nova allows you to backup all your home screen(s) icon locations and widgets. Google restore first, TiBu all the remaining apps, and then restore a recent Nova backup will get me back to 95% of where I was. App settings (and notifications) require a bit more time. As for how long between resets? I usually only reset on a major release 9->10->11, but sometimes things just happen and you either live with it, or reset. Hopefully this reset will allow you to find the app(s) causing the battery drain. Next time boot into safe mode first and try to duplicate the battery drain. If the battery is performing normally in safe mode, one of your apps is causing the problem and you have a smaller problem to deal with. in finding it. Best of luck. :good:

Hey thanks once again. I am sooo unfamiliar with Root and benefits from rooting the phone, it's a nuclear since for me. I bought Nova Launcher but I could not find how to enable "at glance" so I will wait for a bit, just to get bored with this launcher, I think it won't take a lot of time. And just to share, battery is much better today. I have 62% and its almost 12 hours as I disconnected it from the charger.
If you could share with me few links with benefits of rooting or some useful links, I would appreciate it so much.

The ability to root is the primary reason I have stayed with Google phones over the past 10+ years. There are many advantages, but the ability to flash firmware (stock or custom) strong ad blocking and the ability to backup offline are a few. I also refuse to be locked out of something I paid for. First you should verify your variant is one that CAN be unlocked. Not all Google phones are unlocked. Where did you buy your phone? If you did not purchase an unlocked phone directly from Google, your phone may be bootloader locked and you will not be able to root even if you wanted to. First, enable developer settings and verify whether the toggle to allow OEM unlocking is NOT grayed out or locked. If you are able to toggle this setting, your bootloader can be unlocked and the phone can be rooted. Note: it is perfectly safe to toggle this setting even if you never intend to root your phone, so feel free to enable if you can. If for some reason you cannot change this setting, your phone has been bootloader locked. Step 2: Determine if the phone is carrier locked which is different from bootloader locked. Do you know if you are tied to using one carrier, or do you know for a fact you can use a SIM from another carrier? Have you tested this already? If not, borrow a SIM from a different carrier and try it. Knowing whether your phone is carrier locked is important, because if your phone is carrier locked, you may still be able to get it unlocked.

Thank you very much for your time and patience. I am able to unlock OEM (and i did it ) regarding the carrier lock, it's unlocked, I am using e-sim from T-Mobile and when visit other countries, I use sim card from other carrier/country and its working.
You have started my curiosity, I would like to give it a try, can you please point me at some good tutorial and will it be ok that I send you some questions if something pops out
thank you very much

You're welcome, and you're lucky to have an unlocked version. My son does not root, but his bootloader is unlocked anyway just in case something happens we can always get it back to stock. The next step I would suggest is to download, install and test the fastboot/adb tools. It is the command line interface that enables you to push/pull files to and from your phone (and unlock the phone). Very simply you d/l the zipfile and extract into a dedicated folder (eg. adb). It makes it easier if you add that folder to your path statement, but this is not a requirement. There are many tutorials on how to install these basic binaries (as opposed to the entire SDK which you don't need). Once you can use the fastboot command "fastboot devices" and get a response from the phone you are ready for unlocking. You can find one of the exhaustive, step-by-step, and well written guide HERE. Lots of time and effort went into that guide by @Homeboy76. :good: Best of luck, and remember even if you decide not to root that's ok, but at least your bootloader will be unlocked and you will have learned some basic fastboot/adb commands. The best time to install and learn the basics is BEFORE you have a problem.
