I know that this has been a fairly common complaint about the Nexus One but i'm wondering, roughly what percentage of people actually have this issue? To clarify, i mean the problem whereby touching the screen in one place is actually registering elsewhere on the screen.
I've had this problem since buying my n1 and having to constantly turn the screen off and back on again was driving me nuts. Finally i sent the unit back to Vodafone for repair and they in turn sent it to HTC to be fixed. So yesterday i got it back with an enclosed statement along the lines of "we have fixed your fault etc..".
Three minutes into using the damn thing and the fault crops up again. So much for that! To be fair to Vodafone they are sending out a replacement unit now but of course i'm concerned that even that will have the same issue.
What are the odds?
Here is the same.
To developers: the fact that resetting the screen fix the problem makes me to ask if there isn't a way to make the screen re-calibrate itself every X seconds/minutes, without shut off and on the screen every time. Seems to be until now the only solution to this extremely annoying issue.
It really is a bizarre one. I've seen people discussing whether it's a hardware or software issue but nobody seems to have a definitive answer. If it were a hardware problem, surely it would be constant/permanent? If it's a software issue i would have thought that somebody would have bug-fixed it by now? Especially as it seems so prevailant.
I'm stumped!
Other than this one problem though i am completely in love with this phone. The device itself feels solid, durable and pleasant to use. Android is improving all the time and it always impresses when you demonstrate to the un-initiated what the device is capable of. So close to perfect...but not quite!
EDIT... This from the wiki.. "- Q5: Sometimes my screen registers touches in incorrect places, and I need to turn the phone off and on to make it work correctly again
A: This is a hardware problem, nothing can be done about it. Nexus One's digitizer sucks.
Ho-Hum.
I have experienced this problem on android 2.1 ever since upgrading 2.2/2.2.1, I haven't had the problem. I'm very happy with my screen

That suggests a software problem although i have had it on 2.1, 2.2 and now 2.2.1. I would say that it has happened to me within three minutes of using the phone, 50% of the time within that three minute window. In other words it's cropped up in half the texts/emails i have sent where i have had to do the screen off/on thing to complete the message.
Very annoying.
It has to do mostly with the way people hold their phones, the possibility of registering false touches - including, for example, touching the screen with fingers that aren't completely dry. Some have the issue more than others.
HW issues still can have SW workarounds sometimes. I'm not sure if it's the case. HW and SW need to be analyzed to find one, if exists.
There is no "calibrating" capacitive touchscreen. Resetting its controller might have effects like missing touches and other random screen misbehavior (for example - if the controller is tracking fingers, resetting it would cause it to lose the tracking).
Since getting my phone back from 'repair' the issue is less frequent, suggesting that it's not a usage problem as i'm obviously still using the phone in the same manner as before. Instead it seems that various devices suffer from the problem in varying degrees.
I suppose if i knew what they had actually done to the phone while it was being tended to it might help us discover why the frequency of the problem has been reduced. I know that the digitizer wasn't replaced as the phone came back with the same screen protector on it as it had when i sent it off. That being said, they obviously did something. I just don't know what!
Most probably replaced the phone's MB.
Try upgrading to the latest radio - the issue will probably not be 100% solved, but now I only get it maybe once a month or so...
I may tell them not to bother sending out a replacement. It's happening far less often since it was returned and (going by the poll results), there's a good chance that the replacement could actually be worse than this one is now.
Perhaps the 2.3 update will jar something loose.
ATTENTION PLEASE!!
after flashing miui latest ROM i've never had touchscreen issues anymore in over 20 hours of hard usage (also with the phone in charge!!).
I don't believe is a coincidence, developers please ask miui developers if they have integrated a code to fix this issues.
Thanks!

I have already restored cyano 6.1.1.
However, about "multitouch issues" I mean inaccuracy, the fact that the touch is recognised in another point of the screen (particularly when you press the bottom part of the panel). I didn't verified the axes-inversion issue, but I'm almost sure that it persists.
The "touch inaccuracy" is nothing else than the usual axis-swapping thing. When accidental dual touches (palm/holding fingers/water/etc) happen, the digitizer goes nuts.

I don't think so....I pay attentions when the screen goes crazy. I'm absolutely sure that (in charge for example) my touch is ONE.
The only times I was able to trigger the "screen nuts" effect, were when I was typing 2-fingered, and fast - making it register dual touches. Moreover, sometimes a single touch with a single finger is reported as series of touches. Once it happens, it stays until screen off.

I mean this....since I moved to MIUI this is not happened anymore.
Since I uninstalled Htcime the inaccuracy issues seem less so far! Almost only with the phone under charge ...much much better than before! Dunno why....

I've scoured the internet in attempt to resolve this issue, and I know it's been talked about many a time before, but this just doesn't have an answer yet afaik.
Does anybody have any experience with fixing the inaccuracy of the touch screen after prolonged use? I love the nexus one, it's by far the best phone I've owned; but this little bug makes the phone completely unrealistic in real-world use.
If this isn't a software issue, it has to be something with the digitizer being powered off and back on to remove the accuracy bug. In that case, is there any low-level way to turn the digitizer off and back on as fast as possible every X seconds? That would mean losing touch capability for a few milliseconds, but is much better than locking and unlocking the phone each time it "goes wild."
I had given up all hope that this issue could be resolved in any fashion as dodgy hardware is, well...dodgy. Nothing can be done about it right?
I haven't had a screen wonk since starting in on the CM7 nightlies many moons ago!

No, but it's been covered so extensively that nobody really mentions it any more. Either that or others have found what i have, that somehow the CM7 ROM mitigates the problem. Seriously, i haven't had an issue with it for months!
My particular N1 was never good with stock ROMs. Hated them and gave me endless trouble with one thing or another. It's the polar opposite for me with CM ROMs. Never any issues at all. No call or screen wonk, none of the bugs that others often complain about. It's like the phone has an attitude!
After flashing something ridiculous like 40+ CM7 Nightlies and stable releases, i've not had to wipe data once

Basically the digitizer has a couple of quirks. One is that after prolonged use (I found it to be completely random) the accuracy goes berserk, registering touches nowhere near they actually are. Secondly there is a switching of the axis when you cross two points: video. They are hardware related so there is no fix. The wonk is a problem with CyanogenMod7 specifically, causing black screens when receiving calls.
Personally I rarely if ever come across the digitizer problem and have never came across the wonk. They aren't deal breakers but can cause a few problems if you play a lot of multi-touch games.

Well, the touchscreen issue is nothing more than a bad digitizer that was released with the phone and never improved during manufacture of the device. All Nexii have the same one, although people suffered the problem in varying degrees. What would happen is every so often your touch on the screen would register in the wrong place so you may be selecting a shortcut on your homescreen to launch an app, but it might register the touch as being an inch higher/lower/somewhere random. the solution has always been to simply press the power button to turn the screen off/on again. This would fix the issue... until it occurred again.
The call wonk is really in two parts. Stock GB ROMs had a habit of introducing a slight delay in one party being able to hear the other during the start of a call. On CM7 ROMs it was a more significant issue of black screens and freezes during the start of a call. These didn't affect affect everyone though, and even Cyanogen himself didn't have it on on his own device.
EDIT: The other issue affecting the N1 was a weak, and often failing, power button. With the need to keep using it to fix the screen wonk the problem was made worse. That's why you might often see mentions of Trackball wake as it reduced the need to use the power button, therefore extending it's life. Trackball wake is only available on custom ROMs so bear that in mind too!
The phone isn't perfect but with the custom ROM devs doing there thing it's pretty decent for me

When the issue happens you just lock and unlock the screen to fix it. No need for a reboot.
This issue isn't really such a big deal. It happens once a week or so, and it takes a few seconds to black out the screen then unlock, problem gone.
Xperia X Performance (F8132) Accelerometer failure & Screen Auto-rotate irresponsive
Hi All,
I got an issue bothering me since I bought Xperia X Perfomance (F8132) Mid June.
The auto rotate function failed after a while but everything goes fine after reboot.
When it fails, I use "Xperia Service Menu" -> "Service Tests" -> "Accelerometer",
then all X,Y,Z are zero and the ball just sticks and freezes at mid.
I bought from Taiwan and I can find 15 more people having the same symptom with me on 2 forums
( http://mobile01.com and http://gamer.com.tw ).
Hence I don't think it's only me and it's a common issue or common yield problem for Xperia X Perfomance.
I post here because I'd like to find more people with the same issue and raise the attention of SONY in order to find the root cause (i guess it's either over-heat causes this or accelerometer yield issue) and give a patch.
Now I'm using a APP "Rotation Control" to workaround this, but all photos cannot records correct orientation data and no auto-rotate is kinda inconvenient.
For a flag-ship and high-priced cellphone for SONY this year, it is very disappointing to me. :crying:
Version: 35.0.A.1.227 and 35.0.A.1.238 both occur

Thank you for letting us know.
It shows it's not a regional FW issue but a global HW or FW one.
I wonder if SONY knowing this. If not, we need to address this and push SONY to work it around.
And if it is not workaroundable, SONY will have a big problem.
I have the same issue on my Xperia X (F5121) bought in Sweden. Haven't checked the accelerometer but the behaviour is the same and reboot is only fix.

Can you specify "messed up"? I've had issues with the touch screen also, mostly that it registers a tap while I'm scrolling resulting in involuntary tapping on links. Also it often takes a while to start scrolling, as if the screen has a hard time recognising the swipe.
I have the same problem. The accelerometer stop working 15 minutes after reboot.
Help me verify if is caused by a third party app or not.
Use your phone in safe mode for a while.
I'm from Hong Kong, the accelerometer and its auto-rotation of my x performance has the same problem that it won't work until i reboot my phone.
I dont think that is caused by a app crashing when the problems occuring in all around the world.
The issue didnt come to me when I was not yet update to 35.0.A.1.282. Please notice this problem SONY. It seriously affected the satisfaction from user of the phone from your brand.
There is a topic on the Sony support forum - see here: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-X-Performance/Accelerometer-stops-working/m-p/1158490#U1158490
At least they are aware of the problem. As soon as it happens again on my phone, I will send them my logs. I will report any development...
It seems that I uninstall the AR effects in my phone and reboot, it works again
Rotation fails
Hello guys,
I have the same problem. Yesterday it worked fine, but today, the auto rotate don't work. Very disappointing. Only a reboot can help but not every time.
Sony has to do something with it.
Gyroscope/Auto-Rotation Issue
Hey everyone,
I'm also having this same issue, but only since the most recent update from late September. When trying to make a pic display as fullscreen by rotating the phone, nothing happens, unless I reboot the phone. Then within day or two, it starts happening again. When I go to camera it loads up and STAYS in landscape mode, no matter what I do, even closing it out and clearing out the cache & force stopping it then reactivating it. It seems like a software issue that Sony needs to address PRONTO!
It appears another thread here on XDA is dealing with the same issue. I tried shenlong85's idea and it seems to have fixed the issue, but I need another day or so to make sure. If you don't hear from me by Sunday (10/23), assume it's been fixed. Hopefully the Nougat update we're all about to get any day now will permanently fix it!
The memory uninstall updates only prolong the issues. Seems like the firmware issue earlier on.
Nougat... When are u coming?

Well, we'll see. I am giving my XP 'til Sunday........if no more auto-rotate issues by then, then I will consider your idea to be gold. lol Of course, once we get Nougat, I'm hoping it will ensure that the issue never comes back period. As of this time, the issue has NOT returned.
I bought my Xperia X Performance from Kogan who sells imports in Australia from Asia and I have the exact same issues with my orientation and touchscreen. However my jumpy touchscreen only seems to occur while charging.

I tried shenlong85's idea, but less than 24 hours after trying it, I switched my phone from Portrait to Landscape to view a 16:9 widescreen pic I had in my Album, and it WOULD not auto-rotate the pic. So unfortunately this "trick" doesn't work either.
Just have to hope Sony includes a fix with the Nougat update we're about to get any day now from them.
I'm noticing now too that once the Auto-Rotate function stops working, so does Smart Call Handling. Have to swipe screen once again to take calls. Hurry up Nougat!! lol
I'm having the same issue and the only help I'm getting from Sony support is to factory reset my device :\ I'm hoping Nougat makes it's way to our devices soon. I really like this phone and this is a pretty big issue to have.

I agree Spencer. And yes Sony Mobile told me the same thing. I'll do a repair (which yes, includes a factory reset) only IF Nougat doesn't fix it. They say we're getting it "in or close to October", so I'm guessing it's gotta be coming any day now. Hopefully they include a fix with Nougat though and I don't have to do that. Getting tired of this BS with Sony. My Z3 had an issue where if I turned on Stamina Mode, it would 1) mess with my MMS (group/pic/video) text messages.........you don't know how many times I had to ask ppl to resend those to me and how much that sucked lol 2) Cause a "random" battery drain. Only fix was a factory reset. I FINALLY got wise and realized it was SM and kept it off. Found a great app called 360 Hibernation Master that did what SM was supposed to do but better, MINUS the buggy BS. But OF COURSE it doesn't work on any X series phone (at least not my XP), so I'm stuck with SM now. At least Sony Mobile FINALLY fixed that bug with SM so that's not an issue anymore. lol
It is a big issue, and it makes me not want to keep buying their phones.
Hello. I just bought a Huawei Mate 20 lite, and I immediately noticed that when the notification menu is pulled down, the background (the part of the screen that's visible under the menu, not the menu itself) is flickering. I tried lowering the resolution to HD+, down from FHD+ and the problem seems to disappear. Any ideas as to what that would be? If it is a hardware bug, I can return the phone and ask for another one, or maybe if there is a fix anyone knows of, and this little "bug" here doesn't turn into a bigger problem overtime, I can just apply that.
Thank you very much and have a nice evening.
The same happens to me and not only that. If i left the phone in the same screen for a few minutes and pull down the notification bar or any other dark (not black) screen the screen looks like is burned.
Hio, i have exactly the same, i don't know why they would do something like that but, i don't think its some hardware damage or unwanted either since on other backgrounds if you want so, or other screens it doesn't happen for me, as far as i can see only happens on home screen etc... Also a friend from me has exactly the same with different firmware... Don't know about the burned looking part from 2nd post, definitely don't have that!
Greetings

Hello friend, I tried what you recommended, but to no avail. My biggest concern is whether this might be a hardware issue, or it's most certainly a software one - if it's a software issue i wouldn't be bothered at all and i'd just wait for an update or even put a pure android on it, but if it is indeed a hardware issue, i need to know so I can return the phone.

Try it out?
Install a different firmware, roll back to the oldest firmware or something like that. Change your backgrounds, try it out with different apps, play around with screen testing apps. Even if someone here has a similar problem and it's hardware related, yours might still be something different. It's hard to tell over a forum.
Good luck with "pure Android" though, this phone will cost you quite some bucks to just get unlocked and there's merely any support for AOSP ROMs (maybe not even the littlest bit, I didn't look at OpenKirin yet since the phone is so expensive to unlock lol)

Does installing new firmware (I'm currently using EMUI 8.something) v oid warranty? I still haven't gotten the official update to 9 and I'm thinking of just installing it manually myself.
Who else are facing the same problem ?
1)Initially, when I unlock phone by pressing power button the display was changed to dim colour(mostly yellowish) and with horizontal lines displayed when the brightness is below 50%. After tried with multiple times pressing on power button the display came back to normal.
2) Next stage, it's not solved with power button. I have to keep my phone aside for some time to get back to normal display. It's been 15 to 20 min then.
3) Now, I would get normal display only in morning. Else, I need to keep my phone idle without touching for at least 4 to 5 hours. I've also changed screen power off time from 30 Sec to 10 Minutes. So that my screen wont turn off and I can keep the normal display. If I forgot to use or kept aside more than 10 min then my screen would go off and display would gone again and irritation starts with that discoloration problem..
4) If display changes to yellowish to reduce the horizontal lines problem I need to increase the brightness to 80 or 85% but this causing my phone with another problem "heating issue"
Samsung haven't responded on this issue yet, how could we bring up the issue and get the proper resolution from Samsung.
This happened after last March update installation?
What note 9 do you have?
Probably not a hardware fault if it happened after recent software update.
A number of note9 affected although samsung seems to disagree at the moment.
Hello,
I also have a problem with the display after waking up with the POWER button. There are tinted colors distorted and some stripes like dim lines and slow refreshing. Everything started after updating to Android 10. In fact, when the display lights up incorrectly, it starts to heat up from the bottom. Putting the smartphone aside for a moment or cooling down causes the display to work correctly.
Workaround? I turned on Active Display and first knock to activate it, then the display lights up correctly and then I unlock the screen and use normally. It is known that battery consumption increases. Of course mine is Exynos.

Try wiping the cache partition in Recovery Mode. If that doesn't work then back up your device and manually reinstall the OS back onto your device.
Im having the exact problem. I flash LineageOS and it worked by max brightness then back to auto. I installed brightness widget to max brightness and back to auto everytime I turn on screen.
This issue is popular after March update. I tried everythings you mentioned above, reset, flash new firmware, even April update, wipe cached, flash cooked rom, heat screen, turn off features, disable gpu overlay, etc... Samsung Vietnam guaranteed can fix with new screen but I'm out of warranty.
I dont have any issues us unlocked snapdragon xaa model on latest android 10 version.
Can we confirmed that a screen replacement fixes the display problem or is it still a software issue

Can we confirmed that a screen replacement fixes the display problem or is it still a software issue

No one knows what is the exact cause here, its noticed in many devices right after this March update but few are noticed months before. But, now the problem came to many users at same time. So its been brought up by many tech blogs, websites.

Probably not a hardware fault if it happened after recent software update.
A number of note9 affected although samsung seems to disagree at the moment.

I'm having the exynos version too but with ITV (Italy) firmware ...never had this problem and now I'm on April's version after March's version.
This looks a little bit like what happened to the S5 years ago when after 1 and a half/ 2 and a half year's the screan began flickering, having green spots or lines, randomly didn't go on with low luminance settings since it completely died....a lot of people said on forum's that it was the screen and a replacement solves, but when it happened to me years ago the Samsung assistance center told me that it was another component (never told me what it was) causing the issue and once they changed it , they solved the problem.
So, after my experience with the S5, don't know what to think now for what is happening to some guys even if I think that this issue might depend with something happening after marchs update because for the too many people having it after the update, coincidences are not credible.

Yes, many people were facing this problem and how many times we have contacted the Samsung they are behaving like they just hearing the issue for the first time. Just created and posted the link in Members app and 67 members joined so far. Everyone having the display problem out of nowhere. All of them on out of warranty except one or two. Still members app floating with the display problem messages.
Display issue got noticed in S20 too but they immediately released the security patch and solved it. Don't know why they were silent on Note 9.
