Ever since I updated to FroYo, I lost the feature of having vibrate only for phone calls and text messages. Usually using the volume rocker (up and down) it would go from silent > vibrate > ring.. On FroYo it goes from silent > ring..
Any idea how to fix it?
I know I can do it manually by making the option be vibrate on silent in phone settings.. But sometimes I do not want my phone to vibrate on silent.. Just a hassle of going into settings and turning it off each time when i do not want it
It sounds like your problem is two fold.
First, mine goes from sound bar down to vibrate. (I don't know if ADW launcher has an affect on this or not).
Secondly, you might want to look in to the settings applications on the market and see if you can set and restore settings for those times you want just silent and vibrate for some parts.
Are you using modaco's rom?
I use a widget called extended controls which is like an enhanced version of the stock power control widget. It has options for vibrate only or complete mute.
sliding the speaker on the lock screen should put it on vibrate only on froyo
Nope the Lock screen slide makes it completely silent. Is it only Modaco's rom ?
Did you check settings> sounds > vibrate and ensure it is not never or only when not silent?
Well neither of those options help because its either one or the other. I do not want it to always vibrate or just vibrate when on silent.. I dont know why it disappeared :S
Did you try "vibrate only on silent mode" and see if you get the option? I'm tuning kang-of-rama froyo and it works and that is what mine is set to. Otherwise maybe reflash your rom?

Vibrate only in silent mode defeats the purpose of silent mode
Stupid google, wth were they thinking with this change. I don't understand why they had to fix something that wasn't broken.
you can do it from individual app setting for sound, and in the home screen setting. that way you can tailor each app's vibrate, or silence the way you prefer.
Everyone is missing the point here. I have a Droid running Froyo and am experiencing the same problem. It is really not that hard to understand, but so many forums about this issue are full of replies that misunderstand the issue:
Prior to Froyo, Silent and Vibrate were 2 distinct functions:
Silent: ringer volume at zero and vibrate was disabled. Perfect for a theatre or a quiet meeting where even a vibrate would be annoying and disrespectful.
Vibrate: ringer volume at zero and vibrate enabled. Perfect for keeping the phone in your pocket, being aware of notifications, but not having your phone beeping and ringing all day.
This all makes sense, yes? By using the volume rocker, it was possible to adjust from full ringer volume down to low ringer volume. If you continued down after the volume was at it quietest, you activated vibrate mode. Then, if you clicked down once more, you would enable silent mode. Also all makes sense. And is extremely useful and intuitive.
In Froyo, Google has changed the way the OS handles volume control when it comes to silent mode and vibrate mode. And quite frankly, they have screwed it all up. Now, in Settings, you can specify whether the phone should vibrate "Always", "Never", "Only in Silent Mode", "Only when not in Silent Mode".
Ugh. So what that means is they have essentially done away with a distinction between silent and vibrate and now instead of having quick access to both options, you have to pick whether silent means truly silent like before or whether it really means vibrate. So frustrating.
So far, the only solutions I have seen out there are to download one of the many widgets that allows you to toggle between vibrate, silent, and ringing via a home screen icon. But this is not good enough. I want Volume Rocker control back of true Silent and true Vibrate modes.
Someone here on XDA must know how to fix this. Can't someone come up with an app that overrides the volume rocker? Or even an update.zip that restores the 2.1 functionality here?

Hmm it seems i'm not the only one who misses that option on Froyo!
I used it quite a lot...going from sound to vibrate (when going out) then going into a meeting just one more click and the phone was on silent.
There must be someone who knows how to fix this?
Any news on this ?

oh well, here's hoping google fixes this soon. i want the old "silent [no vibrate] -> vibrate only -> ringer+vibrate" setup back.
Agreed I prefer 2.1's behaviour.
I'm using Curvefish's "Beautiful Vibrate" widget as a workaround for now.
i just upgraded to froyo and this missing feature also really annoys me..

So apparently with Google's new priority notification setup in Lollipop, there's no way to get notifications on your phone without having your phone vibrate. That is, there's no silent mode. You can either turn off your notifications to avoid vibrations, or leave notifications on without sound but still always get the vibrations - you can't get notifications without vibrations. THIS SUCKS. Why does it suck? Well...
Example 1: I have an LG G watch. Since my G watch vibrates for all of my notifications, I typically disable vibrations on my phone so that my phone isn't constantly buzzing on my desk. In 5.0, I can no longer do this. That means that every time I get an email (or any other notification, but email notifications are coming in all day), my damn phone buzzes in addition to my watch. Oh, and to make matters worse, the GMail app vibrates on notifications EVEN THOUGH I disabled vibration for notifications in the settings. This bug has been around for a few versions of GMail now.
Example 2: Bedtime. I typically put my phone in silent mode (no sounds + no vibrations) so I'm not woken up while sleeping. But I'll often check my phone while in bed before falling asleep, or overnight if I wake up, just to see if I have any notifications. Now? You can't do that. You have to put the phone in "None/Do Not Disturb" mode to avoid getting woken up by vibrations, but if you want to then check to see if you have any notifications, you have to toggle out of that mode.....then toggle back in after checking.
WTF was Google thinking with all of this nonsense? I can't be the only one with use cases that their new setup totally screws up.

Wow.. I am still learning the new Lollipop features but if this is true that would be pretty sad for me too.
I am sure someone will make an Xposed module for this. Oh, wait...
There will certainly be options in custom ROMs.

I just tested priority notifications and sent myself an email. The phone didn't buzz and no LED light flashed but when I turned the screen on, the notification was there. Is this not what you want?
The worst thing is that if you want to disable buzzing and put the phone on DND mode, you WILL miss any alarm you've set. Especially if it's for the bedtime...
I agree all with you.. I don't like this new setting. When I'm at school and my phone vibrate, my teacher will hear it

Hmmm. Thank you. I'm going to mess around with this more. I wonder what a connected Android Wear device will do in such a situation.
Either way, Google really has made this all way more complicated than it should be, IMO. This shouldn't require all of this thought/setup. Why not add all of their priority stuff and just leave silent mode in there as an option? Sometimes I want my phone COMPLETELY silent. No sounds, no vibes at all, and no thinking about which apps are "priority" apps. This is an extra level of unneeded complexity.

I just think people aren't used to change. It seems like everyone is acting like there is only normal and none and not thinking about priority. I think priority is good for when you want things silent but in case of an emergency you can allow certain notifications in. Like messages or calls from specific people and no one else. Yeah it's a little more elaborate but it's effective I think.
Dude priority mode is what you are asking for. No vibration but you we get notifications. So when you need to silence you phone set it in priority. Now it's even better. Want to receive call or message from someone important? Set your phone to priority mode and add them to the list. Phone will be silent but will ring of that person calls/messages.

Admittedly, I'm sure that not liking change is part of it. I also do see the benefit of priority mode - I really do. I just think Google could have easily implemented their new priority mode and still left in the very basic silent/vibrate/ringer functionality.

That is not what the OP is referring to. Priority mode is not what people want. No interruptions = there will be no notification light, and there will be no heads up while the phone is in use. It should be something that you can just set up and leave alone. The first 2 developer previews actually had a silent mode where you could long hold the sound icon in the volume window and it would go to real pre-lollipop silent mode.
I also have the same issue. I have a pebble watch that literally forwards every kind of notification I want, and I don't like my vibrator to be running at the same time. I think google needs to address this and bring back silent mode by 5.0.1. I'm sure 3rd party roms such as AOSPA or CyanogenMOD will have this, but AOSP stock should have a no-brainer silent mode.

And setting it to none be the same but killing the alarm too?

This is,what OP wants. You just dont know, how set this. It's very easy. I was confused and pissed first. No silent mode, and no notifaction led? But now works perfect. In middle mode you can set, that your phone will be ring/vibrate just when you get a message, and set on silent mode for phone call. Or reverse, or, alot more ....... People just need manual for this, because first time is very confused.

Just noticed something else.
I'm playing music on right now, and the volume rocker controls only that. I can't see a way to changing the ringer volume or priority settings when music is playing (short of diving into the settings) That's a pain in the ass.
I am having issues --- Notifications push to the device, however they don't "pull" if that's a thing... example.. I am on the laptop and get an email, hear the notification on phone and light - check and delete the email in gmail on my laptop... Notification stays on phone... it used to go away.. Maybe it is just me or "I no lollipop well".. ha
Edit** may have been a Google issue both N5 & N7 are now pushing and pulling notifications..... fwiw

What, is this why today I missed waking up in time for work?
I was still getting system notification sounds, even on priority set to only calls/texts from starred contacts.
I wish silent was still an option like it was on Dev Preview 1. I've been using android phones exclusively since 2010 and this is just what I like.
Someone hack the silent state from the first preview, please.

I am using a Mi9 t Pro for little longer than half a year now ... And it still bugs me, if vibration is enabled the phone will vibrate on every notification entry.
Not only on messages, calls, etc... but on play store updates, youtube routines like refreshing downloaded videos or similar background tasks... Notifications no other os i used has cared about. (Thats why I call them low prio)
However vibration is crucial for me, since I have the phone muted most of the time, it is really annoying to have these short vibrations.
These vibrations are not like the normal ones, they are really short, only a short "brrr", no pattern (brr brr) or a long vibration like the normal notifications make.
Within the normal settings I haven't found anything but disabling all vibrations.
Hidden Settings for Miui dosn't have anything helpful, at least I haven't found anything.
In 4A SetEdit I took a look at the system table but can't really tell if there is a setting for this problem...
Maybe someone here can help? Especially with SetEdit, maybe more in depth rom insight can help here, which I am missing.

i've also noticed this. wasn't sure if it was just me. not sure if i should be glad someone else is having the issue. i'm not having the sound play or getting the vibration. wonder if it's sleeping too deeply or what.
after using it a few more days, i've noticed that there are also times when i get a vibration but no sound, even though i don't have it on silent.
I've been scouring the internet and have made a post on the Google Pixel Phone Help Forum. Perhaps people who're facing the same problem here can upvote it so we can get to the bottom of this?

So far, I've tried:
1. Booting in Safe Mode in case it was an app that was causing these problems (I was suspecting Blockda, the AdBlocker, but that wasn't it).
2. Going into the notifications menu and making sure each and every app had notifications enabled.
3. Toggling battery saver mode on and off.
When I turned on Notifications History, I saw that Push Notifications were being logged there, they just weren't making it to the status bar and aren't making sound for whatever reason.
Hmmm, interesting topic. I received my 4a 5G today and I noticed that I did not receive my Gmail notifications at all or delayed. Strange, haven't had such issues with any other phones.
