AMOLED replacement - AOD - not working - Xiaomi Mi 9 Questions & Answers

Good day.
I recently replaced AMOLED screen. Fingerprint works, auto brightness, too. But when it comes to always on display, there's a problem. It doesn't work. When I unlock it with button it sometimes shows for 0.5 seconds before going to the homescreen.
Does any one have any ideas how to fix this?
Thank you.
EDIT: Flashed xiaomi.eu MIUI 11 version (before it was xiaomi.eu MIUI 12), and now AOD is working, but either full brightness or minimal (barely visible) brightness, doesn't step up as it should in relation to the ambient brightness. The auto brightness when unlocked works as it should.

Hi, i have the same situation...did you found a solution?
Thank you

Hi I have exactly the same problem. did u solve it? i´ve tried flashing miui 10, 11, 12 Via twrp or xiaomi Miflash, Global or Xiaomi.eu... none of that worked. My AOD is too dimm. Also my fingerprint works very bad and have brightnes issues when touching if i set it to show on AOD... i saw there is a calibration tool for the fingerprint recognition but how to solve the AOD problem? Please help. My replacement is also an Amoled screen.

Where did you buy the screen? I'm trying to find an original replacement online store (who ships to Spain if possible).

The first screen was from Aliexpress it claims to be original but clearly not. After both problems with fingerprint and AOD i've changed it for a new one buyed from a repair store localy at Granada, Spain.
All i can say its that the box says esmovil.es website that its for profesional repairs stores only i think...
This new one comes with the phone frame and its claimed to be a xiaomi service pack. All works fine now. Under direct sunlight you can see the diferencies in the fingerprint and light sensor holes with the fake one. You also need to calibrate the figerprint sensor from the CIT menu.
I suggest to buy an OEM replacement to finish all kind of problems related to AOD and fingerprint

Auto brightness issue

Has anyone noticed an issue with the auto brightness of the note 8 ? It seems it doesn't get adjusted efficiently! Sometimes it's too dim and sometimes too bright, that's so disturbing
It's really funny, it worked after I installed an application called lux lite, that's unbelievable.. I need to install a third party application on a 1000$ cellphone to get such a basic function working. Thanks Samsung !

I believe you are wrong about this. The auto brightness is adaptable, in the sense that you can set it manually wherever you want in different comditions and it will learn your preferences and interpolate. I actually find it very flexible.

I find that is not doing such a hot job at learning my preferences. I keep having to manually adjust because my phone thinks it knows what I want. It's annoying.

do you mean that it has a new functionality that has not been in old phones? I have the Note 4 and it works like a charm, but the note 8 auto brightness works strangely, when I'm in a room with low brightness the screen light goes so dim that I can barely see anything!
Ive experienced the same thing, I have to do a screen lock for its auto brightness to work correctly
Hi,
(sorry for my English)
Your message was one month ago but I reply just in case some people have the same issue.
You have to call samsung about your issue. I have done that there are 2 months ago and Samsung are going to change the settings only if they have lot of complaint about this weird behaviour of the note 8, S8 and S8+.
The new settings of the auto brightness is "smart" but often it's more like "lost" than "smart"... :/
I adked to Samsung to give 3 choices for the settings of the auto brightness for the user instead of 2:
1) manually
2) auto "smart"
3) auto "not smart" => so the phone adjust the brightness depending only of the light sensor.
They told me that my proposition can be integrate only if they received lot of complaint.
Seems to come with last update
I can confirm am having the exact issue..
Brightness doesn't seem to auto adjust. Even after a reboot. The issue seems to come during the last update - the update where now we can have video lockscreen and animated AODs.
Hope this is resolved soon.

I don't recall having issues on the last update, but I am on the latest CRG1 now and it's working fine on my N950F.

I ran the sensor tests, and it seems that more than the lux sensor is not responding ...
My heart rate sensor seems to work on a hit-or-miss basis..
SpO2 working fine though.

Try and reset your usage pattern and give it time to learn your usage. You will have to adjust the slider for your preference while its learning. I'm on the latest oreo and have no issues with it.
Reset phone to factory settings..
Issue persists!!
Hello Guys,

That's strange. My auto brightness worked fine up until the latest update. It is the August update that caused the problem for me.
Actually, providinf an update on the matter.
Some days later, situation came back to square one!
Not working:
Light sensor
Heart Rate sensor
Proximity sensor
Gyro sensor
Magnet sensor
Accelerometer
Just fingerprint sensor seems to be working fine.
I was on a trip in Malaysia and was at a Samsung store. They told me this is a very common issue and easily solved by 'software update' but when I went on to the service centre, they denied me since my phone was bought in different country. Phff
If the next OS update doesn't resolve this then I would recommend that you take your device to a Samsung Service Center
Anyone got their unresponsive device working back again ?

Mi 8 issues - Camera, Flash, Ok Google, FaceID, Display

1) Just upgraded from a redmi6 which I was perfectly happy with except its blurry/noisy camera especially in low light conditions. Turned out upgrading to a mi8 was not a solution at all, same issue in low light conditions A driver/app optimization by Xiaomi is really required.
2) Compared to my redmi 6 camera flash (which is so powerful that it can burn your finger if you place on it) the mi8 camera flash is not as bright and has a more yellowish light. I don't know if it is supposed to be like that, so a discussion on this would he helpful to find out the truth.
3) Besides the above issues now I also lost the ability to activate the Google voice assistant by simply saying Ok Google since the options are grayed out. Did a research on the net and found out that there are hundreds of topics people facing the same issue, mainly with the mi8 besides some other Xiaomi phones. I believe there is some sort of incompability with miui10 which has to be fixed asap.
4) Where is face id? I don't want to change my region to china/india or hassle with stuff like trying to flash the Chinese version Rom, it just doesn't make sense.
5) Please correct me if I am wrong but as I remember the mi8 has a Samsung Amoled screen panel. It's not that it looks bad at all but my colors look really washed out compared to other amoled screen phones I compared side by side. Tried other color options in the settings but it didn't help improving it at all either.
My device: Mi 8 Global Version \ Miui 10.0.3.0 Global Stable
Any help and suggestion is welcome since I am really frustrated with this device. The redmi6 was an excellent phone based on its given price, how can a flagship device be so bad compared to its cheap budget phone? (Not to mention it lacks a 3,5mm headset and micro sd slot which the redmi6 had) Just not acceptable at all, I am really considering to leave the Xiaomi brand for sth else if these issues are not going to be fixed any soon.
Flash is like that for a more natural tone. OK Google is fixed in global beta so wait for an update. Face id is the same as OK Google. The color look OK to me but you can fine tune them in settings. For the night camera wait a bit for that famous update and install Google camera and you will not be disappointed

Global stable does have a problem with the camera. Miui 9 is even better in term of camera. The solution is to flash global developer rom. It has a better camera and more features.
If you like to use 3rd party app, Try gcam bsg it perform even better

About flashlight, i rarely use it. I only use it for light in the dark. It perform good compare to my other devices (op3t, mi4c). I didnt pay attention to yellowish light.

Google assitant only work from global developer rom 8.11.23 and above. I dissapointed with xiaomi effort to fix 'ok google'. But since xiaomi need to maintain two different rom (chinese and global) and it seem they take more effort in the chinese rom (because china rom have more features and better camera performance, but it doesnt have gapps on it). This is why ok google is not yet to be fix on the stable rom.
I know this is not an excuse because xiaomi sell globaly.

I've never compare the panel side by side with the samsung amoled. I've compared it to op3t amoled it doesnt seem wash out.
If you compare it to ips panel, you will notice a little yellowish color, but imo a more natural color.

I want to thank all of you a lot for the good news and the relief you caused, it is really nice to have you guys on xda helping out and clearing minds, I really appreciate it thx for the info.
You'll still have to change the region to India or similar to get face unlock on global dev.

Face ID is not working in a lot of regions in Europe (probably some UE regulations), but I heard that Italy is working. I'd suggest you to change your region to Indonesia - it's not affecting you in any way, but enables Face ID without all this Indian crap like notifications from Music app and so on
Hello, I can confirm that Face ID works selecting Italy as region.
Still no sign of OK Google working, though.

Changed cracked screen, fingerprint sensor issue now.

I live in Toronto and considered myself lucky to find someone to change my cracked screen. All seems great, accept now my fingerprint sensor isn't rally working. Every other aspect seems to be perfect. Anyone had this issue? Anyone changed screens? Anyway to reset the fingerprint sensor other then erase and try again?
Any help would be appreciated.
TIA.
Maybe he forgot to reattach it and your phone basically has no fingerprint scanner now? Idk open it up and look for yourself.
Thanks.
Was it an AMOLED screen, AliExpress sellers are now selling TFT LCD replacement screens, alongside AMOLED screens, at about half the price. LCD screens aren't good with FOD ordinarily.
I replaced mine back in December with an AMOLED, but I've been on custom ROMs where the FOD isn't as good as stock anyway, so couldn't say if I'm getting as good performance as before. It recognises my left thumb 9/10 and my right thumb 5/10, and never as fast as stock, which seems about par for the course with custom ROMs. I considered flashing MIUI just to test the FOD properly after fitting the replacement screen, but never got round to it.

Thanks for getting back to me, yes it is an AMOLED and I do have an update!! It works perfectly once the screen is on. If I remember correctly I was able to use the scanner from the lock screen with the animation of the fingerprint.
Now I can only use it if it's in the on position showing the time etc. so I just used lift to wake so it works 100% now.
Thanks for the attention.
I have the same problem, caused by replacing it with a screen from a random ebay seller (local warehouse).
After looking through a few Aliexpress listings I noticed that some product descriptions contain a note that they sell only a compatible part, not an original. Others state "100% original" or something along these lines. And many just don't write anything... I assume most of them are fake, if not all.
It is definitely a OLED, but the fingerprint gets almost never recognized, it is hard to complete even the fingerprint setup. Only works if I increase the brightness manually. The screen goes somehow much darker in fingerprint mode, instead of making a bright cyan dot like the stock part. Enabling the screen before unlocking helps on mine too, I think the reason is the higher brightness there, but still not as good as before with the standard screen.
In addition the image is a bit worse, especially looking closer at solid grey, it looks grainy. Normally it should look clean. Do you see that as well?
Scrolling is also not as good, doing a fast fling results in a much slower movement than with the stock screen. It works and might not be as noticeable, but having two devices side by side reveals quite a big difference. I bought another 9T just to try this...

I doubt my screen is original, but it's definitely good quality. There's no noticeable screen quality issues, either with display resolution, colour or motion. Haven't compared it against another Xiaomi/Redmi display, but against other FHD+ 60 Hz AMOLED displays on a mid range Samsung and a top range Honor, it's just as good.
I have the same exact issue after replacing my own screen. It seems to have to do with the finger print animation lighting up when your finger gets in contact with it.
I've disabled the finger print method completely and that seems to help.
I'm not sure how to fix this though, as I would like to use it the way it was intended myself.
(btw factory resetting the phone helps with the success rate of the finger print sensor if you haven't tried that)
Perhaps if you need to buy a new display, I bought the "AMOLED Black" variant available here. Has been replaced on a Mi 9T, everything works fine and it's as good as the original display. It seems like the price has dropped significantly, almost 50%.

Yes, it's all working. I only have no idea what the difference is between "AMOLED" and "Original". I assume that perhaps Xiaomi certifies those displays as original, however, they're most likely the same as the "AMOLED" displays, maybe with slightly better color accuracy. I didn't notice a difference between my Mi 9T Pro and the Mi 9T with the replaced display.

It's not my phone which has the replaced screen, but from what I know, everything is working. Besides that, they're quite cheap now (I had to pay double for what they retail now since it was cracked roughly half a year ago). The total job would cost you under 100 euro to get it replaced.

The screen used on my device was this link (the amoled model) and everything you described is working perfectly:
https://it.aliexpress.com/item/4000691686320.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.41084c4d4VnhIQ
A summary of the situation:
Until MIUI 11, the MI 9T / K20D [PRO] worked normally even when their screen was replaced by non-original screens with only 5 multitouch points, sometimes described as "tft" or "oled", including the fingerprint scanner.
Most of the screens available on internet sellers are of these types, and vendors often insist that they are original. The easiest way is to check the number of multitouch points, if it is not 10, it is not original.
After upgrading to MIUI 12, the fingerprint scanner of the MI 9T / K20D [PRO] equipped with these screens no longer works, restarting the device whenever trying to register a fingerprint. This is not a calibration problem.
The only solution found so far is to replace the non-original screen with an "AMOLED" screen, with 10 multitouch points, which is either original or at least has characteristics similar enough to the original to work.

Mi 9T Pro fingerprint doesn't work after replacing amoled display with original spare

I replaced the Mi 9T Pro amoled display with a new original one, but the fingerprint doesn't work. The fingerprint sensor is still working, the problem is related to the calibration. I tried using the "Activity launcher" app to calibrate the sensor, I chose "In display fingerprint" then "SPMT", but this process failed when it asked to "Calibrate, put the FLESH CHART then click next" with error "0x14 the number of bad pixel is abnormal".
I know that "FLESH FLAT" means that I need to use a mirror on the fingerprint, but what does "FLESH CHART" mean?
Thank you

Hi guys, after reading the last update in this thread, I tryed to install a clean Global ROM on my Mi 9T Pro, and it works, but due to the cheap quality of the new AMOLED, the recognition works 1 time on 8.
I followed this guide step by step, and if you open this link from a smartphone, turn on the "Desktop Mode" otherwise you will see a blank page: https://c.mi.com/oc/miuidownload/detail?guide=2 - to follow the guide you need a Windows PC -.
If you need to unlock the device, first you will need to turn on the "Developer options", go into the "Mi Unlock status" menu, and bind the Xiaomi Account with the unlocker. Of course, you will need the Xiaomi Account password.
Ater the unlock, according to the guide that I linked before, the device will reboot, but sometimes it stops on the coloured "MIUI" logo. So after 5 minutes without any change, I turned off the device pressing the power button, and then it rebooted correctly. After the first reboot, it asked me to add again the Xiaomi Account password, because the device was already paired with an account. At this point it booted, and I turned off the device before selecting the system language, and I continued to follow the linked guide from the STEP 3.
The nice thing is that the fingerprint works again, unfortunately the bad quality of the display cannot be fixed without replacing it again.
Thank you for your help guys.

DEAR SIR I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND FOLLOWED your procedure but no result.
I bought an AMOLED screen manufactured by Samsung, complete with frame, supports 10 touch points, with color quality and contrast very similar to the original screen of my Mi 9T. At first it is a good display, the seller has guaranteed that it is of Original / OEM quality. Here is the link to the part I bought: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000156095854.html
The only problem is that biometric recognition does not work on MIUI 12! The sensor registers my fingerprint but the phone does not unlock with it. I've tried to downgrade to MIUI 11 and it didn't work either. Any solution?
same situation but the one I got is branded OLED instead of an AMOLED one. I wish there's a way to calibrate the fingerprint as I registered the same finger thrice for accuracy but it still doesn't detect properly.

You can try to follow what I have done here. But, if you didn't bought the original spare part, you will probably be unable to use the fingerprint scanner due to the bad quality of the display.
It worked either you replaced original (10 or 5 finger touch support) Theres a tricky way to make it done.

Question Proximity sensor and face ID at dark problem!?

Hi there! I recently bought Xiaomi 12 Pro Gloabl MIUI 13 and I faced really annoying problem. The proximity sensor does not work and it did not pass the test. Allays shows 5.0 at the test no mater if the sensor is covered or not. And the real problem, the big one is face ID does not work at dark, like there is no IR at all and that is great issue for me, because this makes phone completely useless for me while traveling at night.
What I red the proximity sensor is virtual instead of hardware and it makes problems and user waiting for software solution for years. OK, but what about IR camera for face ID. Is it integrated in this phone or not. I find no answer.
Planning to switch to xiaomi.eu rom hoping for fix, but...lookin for solutions with golobal rom, because I use a lot of banking apps that I`m not sure if they work wit unlocked bootloader.
There is no IR cam, just the regular one.
That's not a 12 Pro only issue, most phones behave the same in the dark.
You can however use the fingerprint, so where's the point of calling the device useless at night?

The point is, when the phone is in holder I just tap on the screen and it unlocks by face ID immediately. That`s I have used with Mi8 till now. Fingerprint of 12 Pro is very slow compare to Mi8 and mostly unlocks with second try.
Well I have to adjust to new lack of hardware, but quite expensive Xiaomi

Try to register your finger a second time as an additional finger. This could help to speed up the recognition.
I faced proximity sensor problems with my 11T Pro but the 12 Pro is working great. I use the fingerprint which for me is lightening fast. Unfortunately without the front IR sensor, no photos going to work like iPhone when it comes to face I'd.

Hi did you try to move the phone towards your hand during the test? because this movement simulates the gesture of answering a call.
Enable double tap to wake, then unlock with index finger
PS Don't use phone while travelling
