Hello, I'm attempting to follow the Google birthday card tutorial. When it comes time to extract hardcoded strings into a resource file, upon clicking the quick fix to do so no dialog shows up as is shown in the tutorial. Please see the image I've attached showing where I mean. Is there something that I must do in order to get this to work? I've made sure it's enabled under Help -> Find action, and I've tried restarting Android Studio.

It seems I've just resolved this issue by first clicking the "Open Editor Preview" button (shown in the attached screenshot) and then clicking the "Extract string resource" option.
1) Kindly go to the Code view so that it brings up the code for the corresponding design, that is in the Design view. You should see these options (Code, Split, Design) at the top right corner of the Layout Editor. Click on Code.
2) Locate the text in the TextView, you want to extract to a string resource.
3) Click anywhere in the hardcoded string or text e.g. 'From Sam' and press ALT+Enter.
You'll see the Extract String Resource option comes up. Click this option, and the Extract Resource dialog will pop up.
I had the same issue and this link from Google helped me. Good luck!
This error usually occurs whenever You are using some special character in your native files especially if you are using ! or ‘ directly then you will face this type of error. You have to use a backslash while you are using it ! or ’
' # Dont use this
\' # this is Right
Or You are using ! then
! # Dont use this
\! # this is Right
And now your error will be solved. Read More about this error at Here

Hello all Icon Pack developers and designers!
I was struggling with checking the appfilter.xml for not made icons and missing activities and figure out to make an script/app for that. The result made my life much easier, so I thought on making it look good (as I'm primary an Web/UI Designer) and this is the result.
How it works?
The tool is very simple. You paste your appfilter.xml content in first input field and requested appfilter.xml in second. You Fire Up the parser and you got yourself three tabs. One is with filtered activities, one with original appfilter and one with requested. The duplicates are marked red so you can skip those. You can then select and copy ComponentInfo with activity and paste it into your project. That simple.
I also made it possible to click on the name of the app, and if it's Google PlayStore App, you get the app icon, description and link to the Play Store. You can always click on the icon and get the full resolution of it for further modifications.
If you find any bugs, please report here in the thread, I'll try to fix it. This is first public release and I'm sure I missed something
You can access it on this link: AppFilter Parser
Hope you find it useful and if you like it, hit the thanks button below and you can by me a bear with donation
Cheers!

What's new:
- Added the button for checking without loading images as it turns out that when loading images it could be very slow
- Added the loading progress bar when loading images as a feedback on what is going on
- Added toggle button for show/hide duplicates that are found in result table
- Added suggested appfilter.xml, drawable.xml and icon_pack.xml strings for just copy/paste

Is there a way to use the "Structure" tool/tab (shown in image below) for the same file opened in another window. Sometimes I will have the same file opened twice, one in the main window and one opened in another window.
I like using the "Structure" tab to quickly get to methods, however, I noticed it only takes me to the method I selected in the file that is docked in the main window even if I'm actively working on that same file in the other window. I want it to take me to the method in the window I'm working in.
Is there somewhere in the settings where I can make it so that it takes me to the method I selected from the "Structure" tool in the current window I'm working on and not the main window every time. Or better yet, can I open another "Structure" toolbox in the other window so I end up having one "Structure" tool in the main window and another one in the other non-main window?
I've tried undocking the "Structure" tool from the main window and moving it off to the side so that it is its own window but no matter what, whenever I select a method, it always updates the file found in the main window.
At the moment, I just set bookmarks all over the file to navigate in a file not in the main window but if I could get the "Structure" tool to work the way I want it too, it would definitely be way more convenient for me.

Hi, since installing android 12 i have noticed that when i tap on any text field, i no longer get the clipboard option which would bring up anything on there as well as my pinned options i use regularly.
Now when i tap in a text field i just get the option to 'paste' only which is just the last thing you copied.
This seems really unproductive
Is there any way to get the option back?
Regards
James
In GBoard I still get the clipboard icon but you did not state which keyboard software you use so it may be different to me.
I use textra which does have a clipboard but the system one used to contain a lot more than what was on textras clipboard so was hoping to still have access to the system one.
Sorry I do use gboard too and textra as the text app
Oh man! I just lost my usual clipboard after this newest software update. Geesh!
Hi, this is what i meant, when you tap in the 'enter message' part, I used to get both paste and clipboard now i seem to only get paste and was wanting clipboard back as an option.

If you are seeing the "R" symbol in red color and the error message "cannot resolve symbol R" in Android Studio, it means that the Android build process is unable to generate the R class, which is a crucial part of the Android application development process. The R class is a generated class that contains references to all the resources in your project, such as layouts, strings, and drawables.
There are a few possible causes for this issue:
There is a problem with your resource files: Make sure that all your resource files (e.g., layout files, string resources) are correctly named and located in the correct resource directories (e.g., res/layout, res/values). Also, check for any syntax errors or missing elements in your resource files.
There is a problem with your build configuration: Make sure that your build configuration (e.g., build.gradle files) is correct and all the necessary dependencies are included. You may also want to try invalidating the caches and restarting Android Studio to see if that resolves the issue.
There is a problem with your project setup: Make sure that your project is set up correctly and that all the necessary files are included. You may want to try creating a new project and copying over your resource files and code to see if that resolves the issue.
If you are still unable to resolve the issue after trying these steps, you may want to try searching online for specific solutions or seeking help from the Android Studio community or a professional developer.
