The Unlocked Pixel 5 devices are out of stock in Google store. The Google Fi devices are in stock, but I can't find the answers to 2 questions. One, is the bootloader unlockable in the Fi, and the phone rootable with Magisk, and Two, does the Fi model support AT&T's n5 5G band, because I will be using it with AT&T, not the Fi network setup. Thanks for answers, when I do searches for this subject on this forum, all I get are custom ROM results.
Yes, yes.. Google Fi phone is exactly the same.. They just give you a Fi sim.. Ditch it.

Thanks for having me here on XDA. I have been a reader for a year now, but never registered until today when the need arose for assistance that I am sure XDA's community can provide. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I did try searching the forums here and got no hits, and the info I got via google is contradictory from source to source.
I got a Nexus 6 straight from VZ. (Off contract, full retail). One day later I received my Project Fi invite, and I'd like to take my nexus and run. The salesman at the VZW store swears my device is fully unlocked and will work with any compatible carrier, but searching google gets me different stories.
Can I use the nexus I got from them on Fi? Do I need to do anything other than remove it from my Verizon account and pop the new Fi SIM in?
And lastly, when I pop in the new Fi SIM will it affect or remove my apps & settings I added while it was active on VZ?
I'm not closing the VZ account so if Fi turns out to be a bomb or not to have the coverage I need I still have good ol' big red, but I am optimistic about Fi based on what I have read, despite it being new. I love the android platform and especially the unflavored android os, so I'm hoping Fi proves to be the perfect match.
Hello,
I have managed to use google fi in non-nexus phones but the SIMs were activated in the US. I now have a SIM and US Nexus 6 but outside the US. I have read about some people who managed to activate them outside the US. Does anyone know how? Thanks.
Google Fi is currently doing a promo where you can buy two X4 phones for $249 each and get a $249 bill credit (so each phone effectively costs $125). I'm currently on Verizon with a (forever) locked Moto Z Droid and am interested in getting away. I just want to be clear on what limitations (if any) there are on the Fi variant. There are some threads from last year, but I didn't know if anything had changed since then, hence the thread (and I'd like the answers all in one spot, anyway).
The US a single hardware variant (XT1900-1) with two software versions (Payton and Payton Fi), correct? I assume this means you can flash ROMs for either on any XT1900-1 phone, but you'd lose Fi capability if you used the non-Fi ROM. Yes?
It's my understanding that the Fi variant is also SIM unlocked and supports both CDMA and GSM bands, so I could leave Fi and use it with another carrier. Is this correct?
Finally - and most importantly - is the Fi variant bootloader unlockable and rootable? I'm guessing that new X4s ship with Oreo, but I don't know if it'll be 8.0 or 8.1. I just want to make sure that it's rootable.
TIA!

Yes you can flash either. There's official TWRP support now FYI. I'm not sure on what Fi features are lost if any.

Bootloader is unlockable but you have to get the code via Motorola website, still simple. Root methods have been established.
No Fi features should be lost. These features are tied to the SIM card and email account I believe. I'd go for the deal being offered. My opinion.
Project Fi with Moto X4
I have had forever a Nexus 5x, now a Moto X4, and a Pixel 2. All bought through project Fi. Here in Moto X4 land if you research through posts that this phone is not one with high numbers of owners. I have found that if you want good not great Project Fi switching the Moto X4 is behind my Pixel 2 but ahead of my Nexus 5x. A app that works on phone for manual switching is "Signal Info" it uses manual dialer codes to switch carriers. I have found that on my Moto X4 US Cellular is the strongest here at home but for some reason US cellular wants to cause my Moto X4 to drop down to Sprint, then if I am in a Excellent T-Mobile area it keeps until complete drop out and then prioritizes to Sprint and I have to manual switch to US Cellular.
With TWRP official and Root I haven't yet decided to Unlock yet. If a wanted Magisk module is available I want to add; that is when I may decide. I have found though that Project Fi support is only on Stock/Not Rooted support. I was hoping that the Android One variant would be better in updating but we are really One upgrade cycle behind it appears. As of yesterday still on Mar 1 security updates and 8.0 updates.
On SIM card, I can use the same SIM to switch from all 3 phones. I may get a few old SMS, MMS and recorded messages in switching but very easy to do. I have only one Fi account though. I have found that custom ROM's in Nexus 5x that the Project Fi apk must be loaded at Gapps time and unless you use a full, or aroma to allow Project Fi install the SIM card alone will not work. Permissions get weird and screwed up.
Can anyone confirm whether the Google Project Fi version is bootloader unlockable? I've been using Samsung Galaxy S5 and Note 3 for years simply because I can unlock them and run lineageOS. Those phones are getting pretty long in the tooth and I wanted to switch carriers to Project Fi anyway.
I can confirm that I was able to bootoader unlock my FI G6. The process was the same as a retail us variant.
Mine unlocked just fine. Have to get key from Motorola.
Unlocked P5 doesn't equal rootable P5. Got that. Don't ask how I know...
Sooooooo... How do I find a P5 with an unlockable BL? And is functional with VZW, ATT, and the other nasties?
Google store
AFAIK, buying the Pixel 5 from the Google store doesn't guarantee the bootloader can be unlocked. It's my understanding Google isn't a friendly on this point as they have been. Or I've believed another rumor...

The Google store sells 3 models of Pixel 5. Google, Fi, and Verizon. Only the Verizon model is not unlockable. The other 2 are and probably will always be.
Do you have the model number for the Google version? I assume Fi's going to be the same.
VZW is GD9YQ , which is, for sure, not unlockable. DAHIK

That is incorrect, sorry. I have a Google bought Pixel 5 and my wife got the Verizon model on a trade-in. Both are GD1YQ. From what I can understand the only way to determine is to look at the OEM switch after enabling developer options.
When you purchase the phone it will give you the option of the 3. I bought mine from Google for this very reason. People have bought the unlocked phone from Google, received a non-unlockable phone and sent it back. Easy peasy. Just checked the website again. You want the unlocked version... The other screen is my model
Why are you asking this question again? Were the replies in your other thread not enough?
Can the Google Store Pixel 5 bootloader be unlocked?
I've posted the question: "Can the Google Store Pixel 5 bootloader be unlocked?" in rooting threads and gotten no reply. The model number is the GD1YQ

Buy it from the Google store and do not select the Verizon option even if you're going to use it with Verizon service.
Personally I bought from Amazon again not specifying the carrier as Verizon and was able to unlock the bootloader.
