Question 10x Zoom Camera instability fixed with final July Update.? - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

First, is it just me or is there in fact significant instabily trying to set up 10 X Zoom shots??
2nd do the latest updates fix it?
Thanks

What does 10+ stand for?
I personally saw no camera fixes at all with the latest July update.
It might have even gotten somewhat worse. I feel like the Portrait mode has a harder time focusing now than it did with the previous update. However, it could just be me and my imagination.

This is s21U forums, not 10+.

I think he's trying to say photos taken at 10x zoom and above (+)
Just my guess.

[Q] z1 camera issues

Hi all,
Hoping someone can help please. Just took delivery of my z1 and the pictures look absolutely terrible. It's current set to superior auto but every photo looks so grainy on screen. Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

Yes, I'm less than impressed with mine - certainly nowhere near dslr level as they were touted. I get a lot of noise on mine and they are over exposed.
If you manually focus with camera button then take pic, results are somewhat better but still disappointing.
Could you please post some of the pics you've taken please? The reason I got rid of my LG Optimus G was because of the subpar camera, been waiting for the Z1, so I'd hope it's not a lateral move on the camera front

Yeah they had the same issues with the Z Ultra! They'll fix them after a software update!
I agree photos not great but potential there. Just need Sony to update firmware asap

yeah same here...photos appear washed out in low light..also a lot of purple grains appear when attempting to take a photo in low light...for a flagship device which touts camera as its biggest selling point z1 is a massive disappointment...also the microphone did not work for me while connecting the phone to a headphone without a mike...ill be going to sony service centre on monday...hopefully they'll replace my unit..will update whether the other unit's camera is better...
Guys, do we have any informed update about the camera low quality issue? Is it an early release issue which will be fixed by an update or should I return my phone and get another one in a couple of months?
Please share your input because I am really skeptic about this otherwise excellent device.
Use Manual mode with Night setting
I've come across a lot of people complaining about the camera not giving out noise-free images like it's supposed to. The trick is to use manual mode. I agree, if you use Superior Auto mode, it's a miss most of the times, and when it does work, it gives a purple-ish tint at the corners.
However, If you use manual mode and select the SCENE to NIGHT, the images come out amazing and noise-free!
[DO NOT JUDGE THE IMAGE BY WHAT THE VIEWFINDER SHOWS YOU. A lot of things happen when you press the shutter button. The viewfinder simply goes red for making it easy to focus. The final image in the gallery is a hundred times better]
The Scene modes are one of the most commonly ignored settings.
I hope this helps!
Sorry. Most people just want to use auto mode and haven't got time to fiddle here and there.
The scenes help but they are not the cure in that the underlying problem of poor quality is there. I wonder if people who post either are using a different software version, or are being paid by Sony to post positive remarks.
Nor is it acceptable that we should resort to using alternative camera apps. This phone cost £600 or up to.
It should work as advertised on the tin.

Did anyone face auto-focus issues? Sometimes the camera stuggles to auo focus..
No focus issues on mine, just horrible, grainy images. really really unimpressed with the camera. If this is a firmware issue then I am really unimpressed that they saw fit to release it in this state.
Example's here - note the complete lack of any detail, the grainy over compressed background. Zoom in slightly and see the over sharpening that has been done, the bike frame goes jagged.
The camera was one of the reasons I bought this phone, and in its current state, I declare it 'unusable'
My old GT-N7000 Galaxy Note 1 took way better photo's

Hi Nigel,
I appreciate your frustrations. I have just moved onto the Z1 after holding onto my old but trust worthy Galaxy S2 and after the expense and hype surrounding the release feel let down by the camera as well. Suggestions seem that issues may be resolved once further firmware updates come about, not sure how soon these will happen though.
Anyhow off to take some crappy photos sine it's nice in Stirling today lol!
You up my way (stirling) too then? Be sure to stick some of said crappy photos online so the fanboi's cannae keep sticking their heads in the sand and claiming that the camera is good!

????
I said the photos in http://scratch.veletron.com/z1 are my examples of the Z1, not in any other folder on that site. Go look at the properties in the files in http://scratch.veletron.com/z1 and you will see 'C6903' as the camera model.
Some numpty then went and picked up some pics from some ancient ebay auctions on the same site, and claimed that I reckoned these were taken by the Z1. Know your facts Geoffxx !! You are making yourself look like a right amateur!
Since taking the pics in http://scratch.veletron.com/z1 , I have added some 100% crops of the same pics.
Oh, and its no good looking at the pics on your phone, if you want to see their true ugliness quality-wise, look at them on a PC.

Camera quality is very disappointing. Doing smt wrong??

Bought this phone yesterday. I'm new to Samsung. I had seen and read a lot of reviews and articles, and all were very positive about the camera, but in my experience its very disappointing. Especially the front facing camera. It's always blurry, and what is up with all that smoothing out??? Even when it's off it just does the same. I haven't changed any special settings. After looking for a solution I see that I'm not the only one experiencing this. Is this just a question of taste, or is there really something "broken" at the moment with this camera?? I'm really considiring returning this phone. 1000€ and this is the picture quality I get?
I paid considerably less than 1000€ a week after launch, I think I'd return it if I paid that much. I've had some good photos from the camera and also less impressive ones, it seems Pro mode is the place to be.
Yes the selfie cam sucks. Too much post processing causing the smoothing effect. I'm not an Instagram model, I don't need to look airbrushed.
The rear shooters though can produce some really nice pics.
It's the software that causes issues. The hardware is solid.
The other option is to download GCam which uses Google's HDR Processing from the Pixel devices. It produces really nice photos. Some GCam builds have Night Sight working as well.
You might find this link useful for installing GCam, it seems to be a bit hit and miss, the camera works for a little while and then just force closes every time it's launched.

and trust me its annoying having paid so much for this device and then get this rubbish picture quality!.... and I bet you any money Samsung folks read these forums so whether its a case of "cant be bothered" or "working on it", no one knows!
I hear the point about Gcam download as an option but I really feel I should not need to download additional software to make up for Samsung's lapses. We buy this device cos we love it and desperately want it to work, guess Samsung makes them only to get our money... not rocket science who the real losers are !

Now if these problems can be fixed with future updates that would be great, but is there communication from Samsung about this? And can this be fixed with (near) future updates.

The only likely upgrade would be Samsung's take on Night sight, I wouldn't expect any miracles.
Guys, hey, HW is solid as someone said, i also have some issues with cam quality, i thing that we must wait till we have pie update and then see what changes. Like im working with audio eq and for example player FIIOX5 III sounds quite bad at beggining, but later firmware updates makes it much better. So i thing - wait for software update and then decide to do something with it or ask for refound.

It's been hit and miss too for me, coming from a Pixel 2 XL.
Things are considerably better since I use the Arnova's Gcam port (better than my Pixel 2 XL in fact), and it made me realize Samsung's app/post-processing is the issue, not the Note 9 camera/sensor
Samsung needs to go back to the drawing board and do something about that agressive, over the top post-processing. Like I said, Gcam produces way better, more natural looking like pics, and most of all, they're not blurry (faster shutter time with Gcam maybe?)

More features like Advanced HDR+ and Night Sight are working for me with Arnova's builds vs the one you just posted.
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-arnova8G2/
Can you post some sample pics? This phone is consistently rated as one of the top cameras on the market and I have to say that I'm not disappointed. In good conditions it's hard to say that it's any worse than my DLSR with expensive lenses. Night shots are excellent too. If your rear camera is as bad as you claim, perhaps there is a hardware problem? The front camera does apply a lot of post processing (which I'm not a fan of either) but you can turn most of it off.
TLDR: either you have an actual hardware problem or insanely high expectations, the camera on this phone is just about the best on the market. When I say that it comes close to my DSLR, I'm not kidding.

That's the one you want: https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/gcamera/MGC_6.1.021_BSG_Arnova-based_v.1.3d_TlnNeun_2.apk
If it force-closes on launch, that's because it was installed over an older version, just clear data + cache and relaunch, it will work

The rear camera is the best out there for sure, but why Google went down in the specs of front camera?!
The battery also needed to improve better, we are in 2019 not 2016,Google needs to make 4000ma batteries and more, this is one of the most important things for users.
Everybody says front facing camera is not important as rear, but you can see people at the street, when traveling always makes selfie photos, so you need to improve it also or not make it less better than your previous phone
Got to say I'm pretty impressed by the sharpness regarding contours on my end. You're definitely using the cam the wrong way, or got a faulty sensor.

You're not rooted? Yet you're using three button navigation and your home button is missing the circle around the home button that has been present since the first Pixel xl. Pic is attached showing your navbar and what it looks like with three button navigation enabled on the pixel 4 xl. You're likely using a phone with a skimmed down version on Android on another phone. You're navigation bar looks similiar to the one on the Essential phone without the circle around the nav bar. I've attached a pic of that as well.
Also your clock is supposed to be on the left side. Signal and battery are supposed to be on the right. Pic is attached of how it's supposed to look.
Was going to say that your Google Lens icon is missing, but it's not available in Israel.
Anyhow, chances are is that you're using some random Gcam mod that you've posted about in the past.

What are you saying?! In Hebrew the buttons and the clock are opposite to English, im using pixel 4 xl 2 days brand new, attached my system details!
Lack of sharpness is probably more like lack of focus. The front facing camera is fixed focus. It's no different than my Pixel 2 XL and both do fine for me. You gotta hold it a little steadier. Something that helps is using the 3 second timer so tapping the on screen shutter or the volume button don't produce extra movement.

It crops in when enabled, basically you get less view in the frame as it stabilizes the video.
I keep mine off to fit more in the frame as I don't walk around much while doing so and hold the phone steady in hand.
For a much wider view, remain in photo mode and hold the shutter button to record video. You get the full ultra wide view to record though you can't switch lenses and it's at a lower resolution.

I don't get any cropping with it enabled. However, I can definitely tell the difference in "stability" between enabled and disabled when I take a video while eg. purposefully jumping around.
Just to confirm, you are using S21 Ultra with April update?

I never use it at all. as it reduce the quality significantly which is unacceptable for me and makes it a useless function.

There was cropping on the S7 and S9+ that I previously used, and also I'm pretty sure I noticed it prior to April update on S21 Ultra. But with April update, I don't notice any cropping at all.

Well im also on the April update and there's definitely about 20% cropping...

Do you have a theory of how the phone can stabilize video without cropping?
Another thought - you can never recover the portion of the video that is cropped off, you will always miss those details that would have been captured if not for the cropping. However, you can always use a video editor to apply video stabilization after the fact, and judge whether it's worth cropping in.

Sadly, usually stabilization in editing can often ruin the video. Especially WARP in Premiere. But indeed pre-cropping loses detail. Nothing is perfect.
I also was baffled when I realized that having the initial stabilization option ON, crops the image. I thought that the OIS was managing to do the job without cropping. I guess limited understanding is at fault.
Regardless, the ultimate solution to have stable video and maximum detail is having a Gimbal. As of this point China has a plethora to offer for like 50euros on average.

Are you using SD or Exynos? I'm on Exynos, and as I said, I did notice this cropping before. Now I can't reproduce it anymore! However, I can easily tell the difference between stabilisation On/Off by eg. running/jumping up and down while recording video. When off, it's really quite jerky. While with it enabled, it's surprisingly stable.

Exynos here too buddy.. When you tested the cropping vs stabilization, did you use exactly the same settings as me?

Sorry my mistake. I was looking for crop the wrong way. Yes cropping still exists with stabilisation on.
It's a pity there's no shortcut button to enable and disable while in viewfinder? If recording while eg. walking, stabilisation really makes a big difference. Otherwise I agree, I prefer it disabled overall.
For the S7 (and I think S9+), I actually disabled video stabilisation as I didn't think it actually had any noticeable benefits, and it tended to cause more "micro-jitters". For S21 Ultra, it seems to do a pretty good job at stabilising though.

Yes, and just to clarify, you can test it by switching from "Photo" mode to "Video" mode, while using the same aspect ratio for both.
Your photos with examples helped me thank you
Can someone give me S21 Ultra stock camera apk

Question Defect or normal - ultra wide raw quality

Hi, bought the phone 2 days ago, because it's not with 888, it's not with curved display and has a ultra wide camera with AF and macro capabilities with raw support.
To my surprise, the quality of the raw file from the ultra wide is worse than from the periscope - there are some strange bright dots when you zoom in to 100%, which lead to overall bad quality of the ready image. I guess they are the phase focus pixels, but they shouldn't be visible without any heavy editing.
So, is it just me, or the problem is global, so I know how to proceed with this? I'm leaving a crop depicting the problem.
Are you sure the ultra wide angle has AF? but yeah it looks weird...

That's why I chose this phone, for the af of the ultra wide.
I don't see it mentioned anywhere but as you have the phone you should know it better than me!

You are right, the Edge 20 review on GSMArena mentions the AF for wide angle. A good thing, but it's strange that the ultra wide angle pictures seem a bit blurry then. Did you try with Gcam?
Not yet.

Tried gcam, same story...
Which Gcam version you use? Try enabling Sabre and see if it makes a difference.
I tried the latest bsg, but removed it, cause the results weren't satisfactory or better than using the stock app as a real camera.

Hey did you manage to solve this issue? Any suggestions for the lackluster RAW outputs from the stock camera app??
The battle is legendary. Still no success defeating the defect. If it is a demozaicing problem, Motorola should fix it.

THanks for the reply. I wonder how happy you are overall with the cameras? I've found that the front facing one is quite dark and has WB issues. In general the photos coming out of the stock camera seem riddled with artifacts and oversharpened.

Camera Is great as I see in reviews from owners and websites .
I don't even bother shooting in jpg, this is Motorola and they suck in camera performance and resolution logic.
But, I shoot raw, which is possible even with the selfie cam, and after a minute of editing I get sharp and impressive images, and that's why I bought it - the sensors itself are quite capable. If I find a solution to the problem with the ultrawide, the phone is a keeper...

I actually own it. Reviews and (average) owners don't understand what we're talking about. Some offence.

Learn to make your own jpg and you'll be able to see the dirt in your wrinkles on the selfies.

Answered already here. Jpg from phones and actual cameras suck. The raw from gcam is also worse than using the phone as a real camera. Here's an example, learn photography if you expect miracles from a tiny sensor...

Hasli's LMC Google camera mod seems to be working better with the wide angle cam (no artifacts)
