It crops in when enabled, basically you get less view in the frame as it stabilizes the video.
I keep mine off to fit more in the frame as I don't walk around much while doing so and hold the phone steady in hand.
For a much wider view, remain in photo mode and hold the shutter button to record video. You get the full ultra wide view to record though you can't switch lenses and it's at a lower resolution.

I don't get any cropping with it enabled. However, I can definitely tell the difference in "stability" between enabled and disabled when I take a video while eg. purposefully jumping around.
Just to confirm, you are using S21 Ultra with April update?

There is a small amount of cropping. You might not be seeing it due to the aspect ratio you are using.

There was cropping on the S7 and S9+ that I previously used, and also I'm pretty sure I noticed it prior to April update on S21 Ultra. But with April update, I don't notice any cropping at all.

Do you have a theory of how the phone can stabilize video without cropping?
Another thought - you can never recover the portion of the video that is cropped off, you will always miss those details that would have been captured if not for the cropping. However, you can always use a video editor to apply video stabilization after the fact, and judge whether it's worth cropping in.

Sadly, usually stabilization in editing can often ruin the video. Especially WARP in Premiere. But indeed pre-cropping loses detail. Nothing is perfect.
I also was baffled when I realized that having the initial stabilization option ON, crops the image. I thought that the OIS was managing to do the job without cropping. I guess limited understanding is at fault.
Regardless, the ultimate solution to have stable video and maximum detail is having a Gimbal. As of this point China has a plethora to offer for like 50euros on average.

Are you using SD or Exynos? I'm on Exynos, and as I said, I did notice this cropping before. Now I can't reproduce it anymore! However, I can easily tell the difference between stabilisation On/Off by eg. running/jumping up and down while recording video. When off, it's really quite jerky. While with it enabled, it's surprisingly stable.

Sorry my mistake. I was looking for crop the wrong way. Yes cropping still exists with stabilisation on.
It's a pity there's no shortcut button to enable and disable while in viewfinder? If recording while eg. walking, stabilisation really makes a big difference. Otherwise I agree, I prefer it disabled overall.
For the S7 (and I think S9+), I actually disabled video stabilisation as I didn't think it actually had any noticeable benefits, and it tended to cause more "micro-jitters". For S21 Ultra, it seems to do a pretty good job at stabilising though.

Yes, and just to clarify, you can test it by switching from "Photo" mode to "Video" mode, while using the same aspect ratio for both.

I think all three photos look very nice when zoomed to be "full screen" on my 1080p laptop screen. When I zoom to 1-to-1 pixels I see that there is a small bit of jitter in the photo. It looks like you couldn't be 100% steady when shooting (who can? We're talking very small pixels here and your arms were probably outstretched in the air) and the phone was not able to completely remove the sway. But, this is only noticeable when zoomed in 1 to 1. Also, some parts of the image are a bit muddy at that zoom level. I expected this as packing 108MP into a small sensor is basically guaranteed to make the actual pixels a little muddy. In these high brightness pictures the image looks as good as I'd expect. I would not feel bad about being able to get quality like that. Now, that still does leave everyone with the question "what about when it's dark" but we'll see.

The exynos version heats up much faster than S20 FE 5G which has snapdragon 865. It is much hotter than 865 during gaming and i experience some frame rate drop after playing at 1440p for extended period of time. Turning down to 1080p reduce fps drop and reduce heat slightly. However, after idling for a short while, it cool down really fast. Don't know about snapdragon 888 version though.

This mostly happens with Exynos series of phones. Although some improvements have been made since the first update, camera still fails considerably. Noise and frame drops are something which is unacceptable. We just have to create more noise for Samsung to notice and work on an update. I don't think this phone is what they said it is.
We just have to wait for next update. No wonder samsung s20 ultra scored better than S21 Ultra in camera ratings.

Agreed. Luckily enough, just after they had released this phone, they had admitted to their current chip having a few issues due to their manufacturing process and that their next generation Exynos chip won't have such issues anymore... So if we're lucky, that'll be in the S23 Ultra.

That anything below 4k is crap thing depends on what lens/camera you are using, 1080p 30fps is the only remotely usable one on the exynos version in low light if you are using wide angle lens. Check this out:

I have tested this phone camera rigorously. I don't think 1080p works good in either lens or mode. Slow motion and super slow motion should be removed because its useless. 4k 60 Fps is the only stable video we can take on this phone.

Yes, the recording quality is of no use. Especially if there's lowlight it's almost useless. Hyperlapse also has significant noise. I don't understand if people who are saying the quality is good actually get better videos or they are coming from a previous gen phone which was even worst.
No offense to anyone. But I am just so unhappy with this phone after having paid so much and Samsung portraying the phone as a beast. Its still a kitty cat.
If you have frame drops and etc, consider updating to the latest firmware. If your phone still does it after the latest firmware, then it must be deffective and you have to return it ASAP.
Additionally, I have noticed that if you turn off the Image Stabilization in the camera settings under video options, the whole noise thing becomes much better for normal recording. While it still seems to be somehow stabilizing :O
P.S. I do not mean only the supersteady option. Both have to be OFF. Please test it and share your feedback here so if it works, others can benefit from this as well.
Hi,
I noticed the bit rate in video recording on the S21 ultra is significantly lower than the competition's and I think this is why the video doesn't look as sharp (because the photos are better than that of the same competitors). Is there anyway to make it record at higher bit rate to get properly good results?
It seems like Samsung artificially decreases the quality of the video for some unknown reason. Do you think there is a chance Samsung will fix it in future update?
Thanks
yes you should use 3rd party software like FilmicPro & mcpro24fps
I will give it a try, but usually the HDR capabilities of 3rd party apps are not as good, as well as stabilization.
Filmic Pro also still doesn't support 10bit or [email protected]
Is there a way to get rid of the oversharpened look of videos in the main app?
it supports both , you cant control anything in stock apps

Since the last 1 or 2 updates it now supports both.
Stabilization seems quite bad, though. Edit: This due to the stabilization being turned off, probably....

Why does filmic fail to impress you? It is significantly better if you look at it from a more experienced perspective. Original is overbrightenned and denoised to a hurtful point so it looks blurry almost.
The filmic one is more realistic and much sharper. The noise is easy to remove in post.
Plus filmic has plenty of quality and denoise settings which could be turned on and off and adjusted. We don't know what the Korean guy in the video has for his settings in Filmic.
it supports only OIS though which makes 4k60 as shaky as it was on Mi 8 back in the day, so you need gimbal or something of sorts, + one thing it doesn't sort is 2x less detail compared to 4k30, i get higher detail with Filmic on 4k60 with S20 Ultra with a generation older sensor than what i get with S21 Ultra so i avoid using 4k60 completely on that phone
Hi, bought the phone 2 days ago, because it's not with 888, it's not with curved display and has a ultra wide camera with AF and macro capabilities with raw support.
To my surprise, the quality of the raw file from the ultra wide is worse than from the periscope - there are some strange bright dots when you zoom in to 100%, which lead to overall bad quality of the ready image. I guess they are the phase focus pixels, but they shouldn't be visible without any heavy editing.
So, is it just me, or the problem is global, so I know how to proceed with this? I'm leaving a crop depicting the problem.

Camera Is great as I see in reviews from owners and websites .
I don't even bother shooting in jpg, this is Motorola and they suck in camera performance and resolution logic.
But, I shoot raw, which is possible even with the selfie cam, and after a minute of editing I get sharp and impressive images, and that's why I bought it - the sensors itself are quite capable. If I find a solution to the problem with the ultrawide, the phone is a keeper...

Hasli's LMC Google camera mod seems to be working better with the wide angle cam (no artifacts)
I'm opening this thread since I don't see it there.
Why do I get the impression that the 960 FPS Slow Motion that the Camera does is actually an interpolated version of a 240 FPS version?
Today I was curious to see how good it was, I put the 960 FPS mode and I said: I will finally be able to see every little detail of my experiments and social life.
I was very disappointed to see that after the video had been processed I would find myself with an old acquaintance of interpolation algorithms such as RIFE, CAIN or DAIN... The distortions. These flaws are common when interpolating videos as the AI is trying to guess where the next pixel will go in the next frame, as a consequence sometimes a teleportation effect is generated and that's what I realized today.
Honestly, that has left me disappointed because now I know that in the 960 FPS version, 3 out of 4 frames are not real.
It would be stupid to ask but the camera and processor specs support 960 FPS video. Why didn't Motorola actually implement it? Instead it is using the NPU to Interpolate

They couldn't be bothered. Much about this device is made just to seem good on the surface but actually using it is a different story. I, for example, doubt that the main camera is even 108MP. Taking photos in 108MP does not offer any more detail than 12MP. They honestly should have just gone for an OIS 16MP or something but no, they went backwards from last generation and slapped in this garbage sensor, which is a shame since the telephoto and wide angle are actually great. I also noticed the messed up "960fps video" and I just never use it.

What do you mean by "display with it's detail"? The phone does take soft pictures with the main camera, I know. Shooting in RAW and opening the images in Light Room does show that there is a lot of detail that gets crushed due to the aggressive denoise algorithm that GCam uses, and the main camera app sharpens the image so much that it ends up looking like an oil painting.

With details I was referring to the information that the camera captures when you zoom in and start to see noise. I find no way to prevent the noise algorithm from creating corrections far from reality. When you take a picture, the photo is perfect until you zoom to 4x. You realize that you start to see noise and lose detail. And Motorola in the camera content update it released earlier this week hasn't fixed anything.
