The fingerprint scanner in this phone is a joke. I get maybe 20 % success rate on first try. If the finger is even a little wet it doesn't detect it even after five tries.
I had scanner on the back of phone on my last phone. It worked 98 % of the time and was way faster also.
Either this technology is not mature enough or I am doing something wrong?
Too bad Samsung only allows three fingerprints. Adding more could increase success rate.
I get a 90% success rate on first tries, I don't expect it to be as lightning fast as other readers so I hold my finger there until it unlocks. I have AOD off, DT2W off, I have a thick glass screen protector on and touch sensitivity turned up.
I agree about the moisture but it's not often I try to unlock with wet hands.

Ok, this is going to sound odd but I need to know if our G1 phones with froyo installed could be "held on " if near a magnet when not in use.
I rooted my wifes G1 to match what I have in mine(chromer4.5). She has always had hers stock until now. After I got it all set up, the battery was horrendous while mine was fine. Same phone same age. She did install a couple of widgets I was not familiar with so I removed them 1 at a time. I removed a clock last night and left the phone, battery at 55 percent, on the table not charging. This morning, about 8 hours later, it was at 54 percent. I was sure the clock wan't it but I said "what the hell" and gave it back to her declaring the problem over. She charged it to full and stuck it in her case. By lunch it was at 35 percent. I was stunned. The only difference was it was in her case, one that closes with magnets in the flap. I know there is a car dock app for other phones that can use a magnet to turn on.
If any one actually took the time to read all that, is it possible there is some driver using the compass sensor to keep the phone running in the background when near a magnet?
Thanks,
I highly doubt this was a magnet. Its possible and no electronic device should be near a magnet anyway. But not sure. Did you check if she had more running processes going on than you? Is her screen set brighter than yours. Does she have her screen set to turn off at a certain time. Could of pressed against the case. Popped her screen on. And stayed on? This are all things to think about maybe.

I'm still trying things. I have mine "cooking" in the case now and the results so far are not conclusive. I lost 10 percent in 1 hour with phone doing nothing. I will keep trying different combinations until I think I know exactly what the pattern is. I have tried to set everything the same.
My next test will be to turn the phone around in the case. The magnet location is between the word 'google" and the camera.
I will also try to lay the magnet in the same spot and get a logcat to see if anything starts.
Any news yet? Id like to know. I'm learning from you also uno

I have tried so many things its hard to bring you up to date but I am 100 percent sure the case is the source of the battery loss.
I used the case for a day while my wife just kept her phone in a pocket. I was down to 20% in 4 hours of very light use while she had 83% left after 9 hours.
I do have an additional theory for why it drains the battery. It could be blocking the signal so the phone is constantly seeking signal while in the case.
Today she is going to put the phone in the case with the screen facing the magnets.
I will post the results of the test.
Hmmmmm wierd

The case must be pressing buttons on the phone, if ditching the case does not solve the problem.
-charge phone to %100
-turn off phone unplug charger
-reconnect charger and wait for led to turn green
-turn on phone and repeat until phone says %100 instantly and led turns green instantly.
^ This fixed my battery problems i recommend you try it either way (you might get some extra battery life).
Froyo + magnet = battery trouble ? why ?
I was using a cheap generic screen protector, and removed it yesterday and Immediately noticed a lesser drain while in usage and touch sensitivity is more accurate and smoother now
I do not have any battery drain problem in standby mode but during usage .
Discovered the culprit screen protector.
I noticed auto brightness is working after removing the screen protector, previously always stays at one level even in bright sunlight which shows the auto brightness function not working as intended.
After googling for more info it seems screen protectors do bad to certain phones which have the light sensor, built in the screen itself , I,presumably the hd7 .
It seems that the screen protector puts a constant 'tab" in the screen which will drain the battery when the phone display is on resulting in higher battery usage , or it creates a loop process where the phone constantly running a process related to auto brightness
Compare to iPhones which have the light sensor placed outside the screen, I presume .
Screen protectors may not work well in some phones
how long battery life when removed it and not (standby mode)?
My HD7 in standby mode about 8 hr battery drop 10% same issue?

i don't think it's a protector's issue my friend...u can adjust the brightness as u want...the only fear i could say i have for these type of protectors is if they damage the digitizer of the screen somehow...or the opposite...do they protect it?? i really wonder

I they may do harm because the digitizer may have to work harder to sense your touch. I know this because , it's less smooth performance when having the screen protector
After unboxing and charging my new Note 9 I immediately rooted the device and flashed a custom FW.
Can a person on stock ROM please clarify these questions for me:
1) Is it stock behaviour that the fingerprint scanner on the back is always on while the screen is off?
2) Does this feature impact battery life?
3) If it's stock behaviour how do I disable this? I tried changing the secure setting "biometrics_auto_wakeup_enabled" from 1 to 0 without any effect. But maybe there is another switch? I don't know.
Thanks for any help!
1) If I remember right, I have not changed any settings related to the scanner being enabled/disabled while screen is off, i.e. it would be at "default". I haven't even looked for such. For me, it does unlock directly even when display is off. (Edit: fingerprint seems to unlock from any state before homescreen, except in the lockscreen note writing mode.)
2) I haven't measured battery life yet, let alone looked for changing the feature's behavior for another measurement, so I can not really tell. However, standby battery life seems to be ok. I'm using the phone with very varying levels still, so hard to estimate well, but I'd estimate from the early daily %-drops that standby time is at least 4-5 days. So, I guess the feature doesn't drain the battery that much.
Just a small follow-up, as I finally got a decently "normal" (for me) day and a half with the phone, only one short call, text message, maybe 10 gmails received (but mostly read on PC), a bit of "usage" with screen on time probably less than 15 minutes in total.
Seems I could get about 7.5 days of standby time.
Screen settings don't matter much in this scenario (as the display is off most of the time). Other significant settings are: wifi off, BT off, 4G LTE always there, GPS always available, NFC always ready, fingerprint sensor always waiting for finger, the only extra apps that could be battery hogs are Flowdock and Steam apps (both seem to behave nicely, Flowdock was nasty on my previous phone). Using the LED cover. (Quite the "default" setup with a relatively small number of installed apps or changed settings.)
In a way, that result is good. But on the other hand, with similar setup (minus Flowdock and LED cover, fingerprint sensor only works when display on, but add an extra email account on samsung email app with polling checks), my Galaxy S5 was getting about 6-7 days standby time, too, and that with its original battery (and the phone was bought pretty much the day when it came available here). Note 9 having much larger battery, and presumably better SoC (at least they always claim lower battery drain in idle from each CPU after CPU generation), better Android version... kind of "meh" result from Note 9. However, I did tighten some settings on that S5, like reduced email check frequency and such, which I have not looked for on Note 9 yet. And possibly will not look for, that 7+ days is good enough for me.
I have the S10 Exynos version unlocked, since new I noticed a dead pixel, whatever not big deal, never took it to warranty, but a few months ago I dropped my phone with case and everything so the frame wasn´t affected but the screen... the glass didn´t broke but the screen did... Appeared some white lines near the edges, some horizontal and one vertical, and the phone now sometimes the screen turns on, sometimes I have to lock and unlock it several times with the button to get the screen to turn on, green tint or flickering on high brightness, etc... Expected problems on a phone with broken oled screen.
My question here is: Does a broken OLED screen waste more energy?
Since the broken screen incident, my phone heats up more quickly when in use, I run out off battery juice in like 4 hours of normal use, and I know the white lines may consume more energy as they are also on max brightness even when I have my brightness set to 1/4, but that much energy? The lines arent even that big, just in the lower and left edges of the screen.
No settings where changed asside from using the windows phone app sometimes, no new apps, adaptive brightness off and almost always on 1/4 intensity, dark mode enabled, screen resolution set to HD+, battery mode on optimized and adaptive energy saving on, no virus according to mcafee built in, and really no changes aside for the broken screen.
Also any ideas for making my battery last at least half day? Appart from changing the screen and doing a hard reset (I can´t afford the screen repair right now as it is 200 dollars in my country) and the hard reset has already been done a month ago with same results
Hi everyone.
Just wanted the community's opinion on what your thoughts are about the AOD.
How many of you use it regularly? And those that do, what is your preferred setting - Always on (+/- scheduled) or Tap to Show for 10 seconds? What has been your experience with battery life and overall usability? Any tips or tricks? Any downsides?
Those who don't use AOD, could you please post your reasons, along with any experience with battery drain or screen burn in or other issues.
I'd like to use AOD (on the always on setting), but am not very sure what it costs in term of battery or screen life. The former is a non-issue for me personally but if it's going to affect screen life or quality, I may hesitate a little. I tried the tap to wake for 10 seconds thing but it seems to beat the purpose as I can just as easily go to the lockscreen with a double tap and neccessitating user-interaction negates any real benefit of an always-on feature.
My current settings are:
AOD Always on (scheduled from 7am to 10pm)
FIngerprint reader always on (so I can go directly from AOD to Homescreen without having to go through the lockscreen)
Fingerprint icon set to tap-to-show (just as a hint if i ever miss hitting the correct position when trying to unlock)
Your thoughts and suggestions are most welcome.
I only use AOD via AODNotify...that should have been an option in the poll.
I use a Tasker profile to turn AOD on (always) when a message arrives and revert back to tap to show when message is cleared.
I keep it on all the time, really helpful and doesn't seem to drain too much battery.
Btw does anyone know if it's possible to add weather info to the S21Us AOD?
One of the few things I still miss from my P4XL..
I don't use it drains a lot of battery
I use to always have it active on my 10+ but it got to be annoying. Tap on is fine.
I don't care to be informed every bloody second... that ain't no way to live.

Wasn't even aware something like that existed. Thanks for the heads-up, will check it out.
Poll updated with new option.
I like to keep the setting to always on with fingerprint always enabled showing thumbprint on screen always .
What i have noticed is the aod doesnt turn off when the phone is in pocket or lying upside down.
That would save so much battery.
AOD used to turn off automatically in my s9plus when the phone was in pocket .
May be this feature is disabled due to lack of active proximity sensor

The 10+ has a proximity sensor and AOD always remains on if set to. The face down off be nice.
Maybe it caused issues in the past. Samsung is sort of hit or miss though.
I have yet to use the fingerprint sensor, lol don't even know if it works.
Last thing I want is to get locked out of a device.
As soon as you set an access password this can happen and through no fault of your own. A hardware failure or glitch can trigger it. Had no password been set the setting wouldn't be enforced. I've gotten locked out of a PC bios like that, never again.

Does the fingerprint icon shift around like the clock or battery percentage (it has very little room to move around though)?
I hope it does, otherwise it'll land up causing screen burn if it's in the same position with the same pattern all the time. Have you noticed this?

Probably shifts it over a few pixels but in bright light over time it will cause uneven aging.

According to your battery stats, how much drain is attributed to the AOD? Could you post a screenshot at the end of a day please?
I don't know how much drain is attributed to the AOD. As soon as I get the newest Samsung I turn it in and crank it up before I literally do anything else. I keep every setting on ALL the time (Bluetooth, wifi, nfc, etc). The battery gets me through a regular day. I'll try and post a screen shot. Today I took it off the charger 3 hours ago and I haven't stopped using the phone. I'm sitting at 85%.

My smartwatch (Fit2, cheap) negates the need for AOD.

I have a serious addiction to smart phones, lol. I'm on mine about 12 hours a day. Mostly playing games or surfing the net. Today off my charger for 2.5 hours and I'm at 88% lol.

Cycle the battery between 35-65% if you can (and then raise both those numbers slowly over time) or else you will fry your battery fast.
If you're just going to buy a new phone in 2 years, then, don't bother with what I said.
