Hello all, just writing my second post (I know its confusing me too) to say hello and to congratulate you guys for having a fabulous resource here.
I just bought a HTC Universal off ebay in the guise of a T-Mobile MDA Pro which I am rubbing my hands together in glee about. Hasn't arrived yet, but I'm expecting it veeery shortly. My wife isn't quite so enthusiastic, but never mind.
I have a feeling I'm going to need to unlock the little devil with the tools from Buzzdev (many, many thanks for that as well!) and will be using it probably on my Tesco Mobile net sim card, which is really an 02 simcard without the good internet access. I've looked at that though and I'll be trying out a few of the other networks to see how I go with that.
Anyway, just to let you all know, I am not completely technically stupid, I run a couple of websites and I'm hoping to convince this Universal to synch with my linux box, but I know very little about fiddling with PDAs and telephones and so on, so if I ask what seems to be a silly question, it is probably not based in laziness so much as ignorance.
Looking forward to chatting with you guys,
Alan
Hi Alan and welcome.
The Universal is a monster of a device - paperback book sized - but very upgradeable in terms of operating systems. Check out the many threads in the Universal section.
Not come across syncing software for linux but then I'm not a regular Linux user. Maybe someone else can answer that one.
Hi there
Welcome 0/
I'm also looking for a good way of syncing with linux, which flavour do you favour? I Presume you mean syncing with evolution mail or something similar?
a quick google found me this
Pocket PC Syncing with Evolution in Ubuntu:
http://www.blogowogo.com/blog_article.php?aid=747818&t=5
I'll post as soon as ive got something working, let me know how it goes for you. Might be a week or so tho, ive got exams right now :S (one in 5 hours actually,,,oh dear!)

Hello there TheBrit and funkus, thanks for the reply.
I was wandering around one day looking at mobile phones and so on and I saw an XDA exec dummy phone sitting on the shelves of the shop I was in. You know the ones I mean, they don't have any innards, they are just the shell tied to the wall and a list of features on a sign.
I fell in love with the damn thing, I kept going back to visit it over the next couple of weeks and I was devastated when the shop got new stock in and they didn't have the XDA Exec anymore.
However, I had an iPaq rx1950 which I am just about married to, it does almost everything I want except for work as a phone (which I don't use all that much anyway) and seemed to be doing the job, except that there was absolutely no way I could synch it with my Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn box at home.
Then I stumble across this site and find out that what I thought was an XDA Exec is actually an HTC Universal which can be sim unlocked (thanks to buzzdev) and that the wiki has ways of not just synching with Linux, but actually running Linux on the Universal as well!
That did it for me and I began my hunt on ebay. Found one on Friday night and with luck and cursing the bank holiday weekend, it should arrive today.
funkus, I presume you are running linux of some description and probably Ubuntu, yes?
If that is the case, there are heaps of different threads on the various forums which have information on how to synch with WM5. All of them involve the tools mentioned in the post you directed me to, although there are a couple of tools out there which involve KDE and so on. From what I can see, I should be able to get things going nicely and I think if you follow the instructions, you should manage ok to get Evolution all synched up. Couple of useful threads for you though:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=86302&highlight=synce
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=30936
and the synCE wiki page: http://www.synce.org/index.php/SynCE-Wiki
Both the threads and the wiki are incredibly useful for working out whether you can or you can't synch with your linux box. Unfortunately, with my rx1950, I can't. It just will not play at all, actually crashes both the ipaq and the computer.
Thanks for the welcome and good luck with those exams funkus!

Hello all! I jump from phone to phone when ever I can catch a broken one to fix for nearly free. I recently ran into an HTC HD 7 and am not really vibing to the windows mobile 7, and from what I read there is not currently a pre made rom available for installing android on this device. I am pretty technologically advanced and feel confident given the right direction on how to accomplish this I would be capable of creating one. I have read a lot of information but am some what lost mainly because of some of the lingo terminology, being that I haven't hacked/developed outside of the ios platform. I can program in just about any c based language. Any one got ne thing that can help me out here? If I build one how would I install it or go about uploading it to the device? Thanks in advance for any replies I do greatly appreciate all your time! I apologize about the noobness like I said ios is whats been available to me for the past few years, and now I want android like a kid wants candy!!!

Developers/programmers have been trying to figure out how to dual boot the HD7 (like the HD2) since it came out. The main problem seems to be how WP7 is compiled .NET and C#. WP7 securitys still aren't fully unlocked.
Take a look at the Project Haret thread, they seem to be making some progress at it and if you have the know how, maybe you can contribute.

Thanks for the heads up, appreciate the reply, btw where is the thanks button? sorry this is my second post here. I started to do some research into it. I believe the answer is in the coredll.dll file which may be stating the obvious. I think the way to go about accessing this or at least what I am going to try is an attempt to gain root access with my device tethered to my comp from terminal.

Your welcome! I've read through the whole Project Haret thread and there is alot of information, (some way to complicated for me) trial and error and it looks like as of recent there has been some good progress towards getting Haret to perform and (hopefully) run kernel mode and actually boot the kernel. You might be right, give it a shot or maybe put it on the thread and see what kind of feed back you get on it!
Is your device unlocked yet so that you can gain access to it and try it out?
Personally I would love to see the HD7 dual boot WP7 and Android. Don't get me wrong... I thoroughly enjoy WP7 and love my HD7it's very smooth, fast, stable and not once has it crashed on me. I believe that it would bring a longer life experience to the device and make it that much more versatile, especially since we're nearing the end of official support.
The thanks button should be there now, under the posts.

Ok so I realize I might sound like an idiot considering everything I said can be found within the haret documentation. I originally read something found on google with inaccurate information after you told me about the project, come to find out the information I read was in no way affiliated with the the actual project haha. Forgive my stupidy, I began to read and follow along the documaton for it at htc-linux.org, the only thing I am having issue with is obtaining haretconsole to explore the device. The link on the documentation I believe no longer exists, and I can't find a source anywhere! This is pretty good stuff though thanks for linking me up with it! Have you installed the development tools or haretconsole on a linux OS by chance? I was successful with the developement tools, just need to figure out this haretconsole problem. BTW which desktop OS do you prefer?
Sadly I can't tell if my device is unlocked yet haha. I work at a university doing LAN Administration currently and used my .edu e-mail to register as a developer. I then registered my device but don't see a single difference or maybe I just am doing something wrong. How do you suggest going about that(unlocking it that is, I don't care about it being official, just figured official would be easlier)? Also for the iPhone there is a desktop application which allows you to access the filesystem called iFunBox, is there anything similar for the wp7?
I would just love android lol, I like the HTC HD7 and have always been a fan of HTC products, It definately is pretty smooth and compared to my previous device a 3gs it's lightening fast! 3g isn't supported with the 3gs on t-mobile either. My biggest issue with wp7 is the fact it doesn't do anything I want to be done in a device, I use my mobile browser ALOT and I have never seen a browser period with this many bugs, I installed safari but it's not even the same lol! For the most part I strongly strongly dislike anything related to microsoft, but unfortunately I have to work with the windows platform quite often because of my job. There just such a dirty/shady/grimmy company period, I saw a commercial yesterday advertising bing where they claimed 2 out of three people choose bing over google in a blind study............how can they advertise that when they stole googles code! lol. Also it was a pretty dirty business move of microsoft to do what your talking about with the wp8. They claim there going to continue support on 7 but we both know they all say that and do put the effort towards the legacy system for a short period of time before cutting it. Screwing Nokia out of major growth potential within the U.S. while going back on the promise made to them regarding free upgrades to 8 for 7 devices. I think they feel like there invincible just because they currently run the desktop OS market share. I think their will likely be a major change in the preferred OS within the next 10 years, just because I work in an 30,000 user enterprise that refuses to upgrade their liscensing with microsoft because of windows 8's inability to meet our needs.
Sorry if this message way to long haha

Sorry its taken me so long to get back with you... Been crazy busy!
Unfortunetly I only have Windows OS, PC and Laptop. Funny enough though, I just got my laptop back from the shop a couple weeks ago and I had to have the harddrive replaced. Last week my PC got the BSOD (blue screen of death) and I had to completly wipe and restore it.
My next computer will be a Linux OS forsure. I wish I had one currently to install Haret and play around with it!
The student registration is limited and you can only sideload a max of 3 unasigned apps. You would be better off to fully unlock your device and install a custom rom, this will give you more options to sideload as many unasighned apps as you want in the form of XAP's through IE. Access to the registry/file system and to apply hack and tweaks. you can then familurize yourself with the OS and file system.
I can help walk you through the unlock process, it's pretty easy.
Go to settings, about, more info. post back all the information from that screen. Enter your device into bootloader mode - Power device off, hold down the volume down button and power the device back on, while continuing to hold down the volume down button, this will bring you into BL mode a tri-colored screen. Post back the information from that screen also.We can go from there. The proccess to unlock it basicially is to downgrade the SPL to 3.xxx or lower to install RSPL/HSPL wich will allow flashing of a custom rom.
My IE works excellent. It might be due to what build version that your device is running on. Either way once we get it unlocked there's custom roms running on Tango 8779 build with nice features and the device runs buttery smooth. there's also more mobile browsers available to install once it's unlocked, Opera Mobile,UC browser and a bunch more. There's all kinds of XAP's you can install to cusromize the device and enhance the user experience.
Totaly agree with you on the Android development for WP7 and the above statement regarding MS

@bra_y_a_n, that's easy like piece of cake
All you need is knowledge of linux & java, tools to compile and a lot of time
Silme, isn't it ?

I'm 12, almost 13 (just one week to go), and I also want to be a developer but I don't have enough time because I have a lot of homework, but I just started with little projects like modding SystemUI.apk and framework-res.apk.
So, begin with small/little things.
Also, buy a Raspberry Pi (like I did).

Using kitchens doesn't make you a developer.
Theming doesn't make you a developer.
Actually, I'd say none of the S5830i are true developers / fully using their skills if they are. They're ROM maintainers, themers for some, and they do a great job at it, but all they're doing it following tutorials.
Anyway, if you really want to help and all, I think it would be more productive if you learn java and start programming android apps instead. Any ROMs you create at this stage will be redundant and unoriginal, but creating apps will be a good base for later on -if you want to create custom ROMs or continue with apps.
Good luck.
EDIT: Just to avoid flames and such, I never said I'm better or more experienced than anyone.
HI you guys are awesome
Well hi all, I'm 'new', but not really that new, since I've been searching through XDA topics on many occasions for quite a few years now. Not sure why it took me so long to actually make an account, but here I am.
So about me - half geek, half creative, F/LOSS enthusiast for over 20 years, full time Linux user since 2006, interested in way to many subjects to ever become a specialist in any of them within at least a dozen of life spans. Hence I don't think I'll ever be able to call myself a developer, but hey, we'll see ;-)
Hello everyone, i'm back here after a long, long time
I used to read alot here when i was 10 - 15 but I think i switched to iOs during 2010s and i never really had my phone in the center of my occupations so i bought some macbook & iphone and i started to learn code. (mostly js)
I would be really happy to help users here, if i can, and discuss about my new device. 2020s seems to be redditable as **** tbh, the xda lost kid became some kind of creative dev who's going back to the r00t
Thank you for everything I have read here over the last years!
More than anything, XDA is a community, and we're all here for different reasons.
Some are here to mod their phone--some joined just to ask a question. Or perhaps, like many, you joined so long ago, you have no idea why you're here (which is totally fine! we've been around for almost a decade). And we're in the process of making XDA more useful to everyone here now that we've moved to much better forum software.
But we'd love to know your XDA story: why are you here, and who are you? What's your day job, what phones do you have, where do you live, what do you like to do for fun? We'd love to get to know you!
Also, be sure to spend some time filling out your profile:

Hello. I have an LG expression 3 and a MotoG 7 power .i am here looking for a ROM or theme for both phones.
A while back I had an AOPk boot animation that was awesome and the alien ROM ( I think) . it had awesome fonts and icons. I was wondering if UI theme kitchen is still around and if either phone is rootable and or would be compatible with the theme kitchen. ?? Its been a while but I really hope you can help me find something . both phones are pretty plain and boring .
Hey All,
I am a Redmi 5 user and I am here in XDA to find a way to root my phone and also see that, if there is any possibility that I can upgrade the Android version as mine is stuck at version 8.
Well i like the internet especially for the opportunity to learn from others and share information with people that equaly appreciate the content as much as i do.
Here i gonna admid i am more on the newby side.. I played around with phones in the past. Mostly following up tutorials of people that really understand what they are doing... And this way i can create something with their help that me on my own would be hard to accomplish... We build on each other in different aspects of life and here i am appreciating to receive knowledge of the ones that are really into electronics/software/programming. ..
Its a strange, extremly complex but logic world that i find myself in when dealing with modifiying electronics .
Thanks for sharing this with me

Hi everyone.
Glad to have stumbled upon this wonderful community. Hope to consider myself a developer too very soon taking the wealth of resources here into consideration.
Will put substantial effort in abiding by all rules and regulations.
Thank you and best wishes

Welcome to XDA!
Have a good read and enjoy!
Hi. I'm a french CS engineer and a Debian addict.
I systematically root all my phones and have a specialization in tuning the iptables to not talk to the GAFAMs. Rooted phones so far : Huawei codenames HAM, NEML51, old samsung phones, a couple of Wiko phones.
I've been following XDA-developers for a decade and decide now to onboard :
* Short-term goal : get some help on a very edge case involving dm-verity and kali nethunter on Nexus5X (bullhead)
* Long-term goal : wait patiently for the day when a full debian phone / ubuntu touch will be available at a relatively low price, and help all along
hi. im just a nobody playing around with his phone 3
I have used and enjoyed Android devices for many years. I would like to join in. I have some interesting results from tests. A friend suggested that this is the way I should go. If you will accept me as part of something we can build together. I would be happy and grateful.
I used this site since around 2012. My Lenovo K1 Tablet. I have had many accounts stolen from me. Not an xda issue. Something else. I am asking if the community would like to work with me.
