Hello guys,
I don't see a dedicated section for lenovo Z5s but I managed to download the TWRP 3.3.1 from baidu (only chinese and english but chinese default).
I then looked for rom authors, it seems they all are using chinese custom roms, anyway they are mirrored and MIUI has been tested by me.
I decided to mirror all downloads I found (they were quite hard to get):
TWRP :
TWRP-3.3.1-LENOVO_Z5S-CN-wzsx150-fastboot.7z (with fastboot instructions and files)
TWRP-3.3.1-0529-LENOVO_Z5S-CN-wzsx150.zip (can be flashed with TWRP)
recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-0529-LENOVO_Z5S-CN-wzsx150.img (only .img file)
Chinese Roms :
Z5s_miui_19.5.20(9.5.16)_Pie_Public_by Art_Chen(TWRP_FASBOOT_2in1).zip
Z5S_H2OS_190722
Z5s_Flyme7.3.1.0A_YouLinw_V1.5_19.07.25
GSI Roms : (Seems to be AB, because A-Only are not working)
According to 4PDA, only Pixel Experience have been tested for now, they provide screenshot and video.
Pixel Experience GSI Tested working!
Ressurection Remix Tested working!
Arrow OS Tested Working!
All other public GSI images (tested many, none of them working, no idea why)
Official ROM backup (QPST format):
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/lenovo/l78071/
I added permissiver v4 I got from Telegram on Android Q GSI channel
Instructions for GSI Images (thanks to 4PDA):

First, thanks for the Thread. Very informative.
let me report that H2OS showes black screen after boot logo,
Flyme seems working but with some minor problems (bad english translation, no google apps on built-in chinese app store, upper notification bar not aligned, etc).

Hi, thanks. H2OS is the only one i have not tested, i will remove the link. If you live outside Cina I would recommend GSI rom since chinese roms might have issues with notifications.
I now recommend AEX (arm64 AB)

Don't you lost WIFI after flashing just GSI img file? I need to flash MIUI before flashing any GSI to keep WIFI working.
and this maybe is a lil bit off topic but have you ever had problems with fastboot?
my fastboot is not working properly since I bought this smartphone, 'fastboot devices' works but
can't flash anything, saying random error like 'maxium download size not reported', 'too many links', and even 'error: no error'...
tried changing usb port, cable, driver, everything I can think of.
I can still flash boot.img, recovery.img, vbmeta.img via QFIL but I want to use fastboot which is less hassle..
Report:
MSM Xtended is working too.
problems I hav till now.
1. WIFI not working if you flash directly from ZUI, or wipe cache/dalvic.
2. loud speaker sound problems at various ROMs, with or without equalizer app.
3. notch size is not matching with status bar at every ROMs
4. double tap to wake is not working for every ROMs.
I actually did flash miui first.
I contacted art_chen to get international MIUI, he told me he dont have phone anymore but we can download his miui zip and replace system.img with the one official from MI9 (taking the system.img full global fastboot firmware and it should work).
The vendor image and boot.img included in the miui rom have been customised by art_chen so he probably fixed wifi !
Since i also dont have the phone i cannot test so well.

1. did you had loud speaker problem after flashing treble GSI files? Mine distorts heavily with every .img file i tried.
2. I'm testing swapping .img file with other xiaomi devices but none of them is working. Sounds like you don't own the device anymore so this will be lonely fight.
---------- Post added at 03:41 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:36 AM ----------
I need FM radio which is not included in Art_chen's ROM so I tried swapping system.img with Redmi note 7 (closest spec), and failed.
TWRP log is saying "Failed to mount '/system_root'" so i guess the reason is partition chart problem or pre-installed magisk, I'm not sure I can fix this but I'll keep trying.
since FM radio is not even on the hardware list so i decided to give up FM radio, but updating android security patch with
Mi 9 (since OP mentioned), Mi 9 SE (quite close spec) and Mi CC9 (not international but even closer than redmi note 7) firmware files,
I don't think any of them would work, but I'll keep trying(2).
You could also try with Flyme blobs (boot, vendor etc) they are from different dev
If you messed up partition i recomment flash wjole miui or flyme with adb
Looking for Global Rom
I purchased the Chinese version of this model.
I tried various GSIROMs, but there were a lot of things that didn't work.
I want to use ZUIOS obediently. Does anyone have a Global Rom?
Also, you should be careful about overwriting GSIROM.
The lighting adjustment has gone wrong.
(No problem with genuine ROM)

there is no Official Global Firmware since this phone is only for china mainland. You can enable google service/calendar/GPS by downloading play store .apk from lenovo app store.
there is faulty firmware chimera with chinese rom + google service preinstalled, but trust me, it is unusable. It has every unfamiliar chinese-specific settings + bunch of 'google service force closed' alarms, bad battery drain by google service, crashing app downloading, etc.
Yes, I'm still using this mediocre device, found some useful articles about GSI, will throw links here.
https://www.dospy.wang/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1626&extra=page=1
https://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=1504540
it's not in English but google translate will help you guys.
here's the essence.
Flash MIUI first, its mandatory. Without it you will lost WiFi.
But, you will lost DT2W and FM radio at kernel level if you flash MIUI.
Now you can flash any GSI, but I recommend Pixel Experience from the link I uploaded,
because fixes of common GSI issues like statusbar height (use magisk+rirucore+riruedxposed+gravitybox), sound distortion (use magisk+audio compability), headphone not detecting (random) are integrated to the GSI.
Global ROM was uploaded to 4PDA.
K10 note is almost identical with Z5s and now it's Global released, you can get the QFIL files, I guess just swap system.img and userdata.img might work.
the difference between Z5s chinese ROM and K10 note global ROM must be something like that of Z6 pro chinese and global version...
edit: yes it is working, just swap system_xx.img and userdata_xx.img files will do the work, only camera.apk won't work properly (no optical zoom just digital, ramdom crash sometimes ) but we can stick with Gcam port.
I flash pixel experience then i find out auto brightness isn't work well.i adjust it to the lowest , but it still so bright.how can i fix it?
H2OS 9 : https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/45L1TZFa0g1MP3-jSYhMDg
Flyme 8 : https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/P8tL8eq9UhV8Hbq8-7nYBQ
MIUI 11 : https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/q-8qnFI1VP8upyz6quZZmw
it's all from YouLinw, the dev of Flyme 7 port in OP.
Flyme 8 is still in daily alpha, it boots but stuck in Terms&Conditions screen.
MIUI 11 and H2OS works great, (but don't use pre-installed Magisk, install official v19.3 from via TWRP. idk why but pre-installed one or lastest v20.1 won't work.)
Android Security Patch in MIUI11 is Sep 1st while H2OS is Aug 1st (same with PE I linked before)
so it's your choice to use MIUIsh MIUI with newer ASP, or H2/PE which is more stock android, but with older ASP.
Quack phh Android 10 is not working sadly,
neither vendor by Art_Chen (MIUI10) nor YouLinw booted,
with original vendor it boots but Wi-Fi won't work, like always.

I have the same problem, I just bear it since it's not major one. you can use any third party apps from play store that dims your screen if you want to.
Hello, i think about buying this phone or xiaomi note 7 pro . Want to flash lineage or aosp base rom, someone has a point of view about best hardware and best dev support ? For me note 7 pro have better dev support but one week for unlock bootloader and lcd cheaper for repair . Can't find photo versus, z5s have three module but rn7p have 48mp , someone have an advice ?

I think Redmi Note 7 pro is the buy.
I chose Z5s because of its cheaper price, lighter weight, and more premium material (alu+glass).
And I also had nice Dev experience with ZUK Z2 so I expected the same with this phone (which was wrong guess )
Cam, I assume stock camera is better in Z5s, but You won't use stock ZUI/MIUI ROM anyway so that won't bother you.
GCam works great on both model, ported stock camera apk won't work as good as it's on stock ROM, both in Z5s/Note 7.
Sound, both mediocre.
Screen, both mediocre (HDR on Z5s is fake color boost only for chinese content apps),
and Z5s has unusual copper plate type connection not like normal ribon cable.
Dev, Z5s is for China mainland only so you won't get proper global/AOSP ROM developments,
but you can get bunch of MIUI/Flyme/H2OS ROMs...
Official Update is also better in MIUI over ZUI.
Hi there. Was there any AOSP or LineageOS working on our Z5S?
Hi @vickdu31 do you have a copy of recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-1015-LENOVO_Z5S-CN-wzsx150.img ? I tried as a guest in 4pda but I get a 404 error. Thanks for your help!

Guessing you're asking if there's a custom recovery available for the RN9. Not yet, so far as I know
I've found the stock firmware pretty solid so far - can't see me bothering too root this

May I ask, why do you need to wait 166 hours to unlock bootloader? I this about the apply thingy that you need to do before unlocking Xiaomi devices? Because I have read this article that stated "Before some years ago you need to apply and wait 1-15 days for permission! But, now Xiaomi changes its policy. Now you don't need to apply for unlocking your device.Oct 13, 2018"

tested the unofficialtwrp thing today. And now got me bootlooped. seems like the no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip is not working as expected. now im trying to restore the old state.... hope there will be a good way to root this cause i need adaway
Adguard is loads less trouble - fine without root

Thanks darthm0e! Hope you keep updating here on your findings BTW, how can we create a custom recovery? I want to know how to.
Adguard doesn't work for all my needs. and its more or less browser based. Anyway i need root for some other stuff too...so.
2nd try i used the Xiaomi Tool V2 (by Francesco Tescari). It loads also the same TWRP image and i also get stucked in the Bootloop.
on tradingshenzhen they explained more or less the same method then unofficialtwrp.com except they use the XiaomiTool V2
and the TWRP i found there is the same.
whats strange is that i only read about Codename Merlin for the Redmi Note 9, but mine reports hisself as MerlinNFC. maybe this is the thing or are they all equipt with NFC? I will try tomorrrow again.

Redmi note 9 root
How root redmi note 9???? Any body know about redmi note 9 recovery?????? When recovery coming for redmi note 9??????
Hi guys,
New here and I got this phone a few weeks ago. I tried rooting it via Magisk both by flashing the zip on the unofficial TWRP and by patching the boot.img file, but both methods ended up in bootloop.
So I'd like to know if any of you have informations on this : has a consistent way of rooting this phone been found?
(My question may seem stupid since it only came out a month or so ago, but honestly I don't really have an idea how long it usually takes after a device's release for people to find a way to root it)
Thanks for your answers!

This post worked for me as far as rooting goes.
I also managed to verify the SafetyNet test (with magisk spoofing modules + clearing Play Store/Services data), then installed edXposed just fine too.
But, then I installed some module that got me stuck in a bootloop and had to wipe and start over, and I couldn't pass the SafetyNet check anymore for some reason.
So I wiped again and keeping it unrooted for now, I'll wait for custom ROMs.

@Akitake: That's always nice to see that a particular rooting method of some related Redmi phone works on our Redmi Note 9. :good:
Now, you know for sure that the Redmi Note 9 has a MediaTek G85 processor and Xiaomi devices are notorious for getting very easily bricked. See for example the Custom Rom threads for Redmi Note 8. It is really spooky how some guys end up having their smartphone turn in to a Xiaomi service center - if there is such a center at all in their country. So what's paramount here for us Redmi Note 9 users is that we really, really make sure that we don't arrive at a hopeless situation! That's why I need to ask you some questions to make sure we all are on the same page.
1) What Note 9 do you have? Is it one with NFC or not? Mine, for example, is a M2003J15SG where G denotes the NFC variant.
2) What's the MIUI version you are running? Mine, for example, is 11.0.5.0 (QJOEUXM)
3) You unlocked your phone, right?
4) Did you use any particular tools like a particular fastboot version, for instance?
5) Which version of Magisk did you install?
6) Which version of edXposed did you install?
7) Which Magisk spoofing module did you install? Why that and not another one?
8) What do you mean with "clearing Play Store / services data". Do you mean all Google Play services data?
9) If you arrived at a bootloop, how did you wipe? Did you wipe data/cache/etc? Did you use fastboot or some LR-TWRP or MiFlash? Which version of the tool?
10) Once you reinstalled your original boot.img, did your phone start up normally or were there "hickups"?
Sorry for asking so many questions, but as I said, I want to make a 100% sure that everything goes well.
Thanks for your answers in advance!
Best whishes to you!

1) It's the lower end version, with 64GB internal storage, Redmi Note 9 (merlin)
2) Latest at time of writing, shouldn't matter but yes, 11.0.5.0, we're also going to get MIUI 12 soon-ish as it's already released in China.
3) Yes with miunlock (Official tool)
4) I just always use the ADB and Fastboot versions provided with MiUnlock (same folder, open CMD inside it then you can use adb and fastboot)
5) Latest? 20.4
6) I installed EdExposed manager from XDA Labs and simply installed it that way, so, latest
7) One of them is like Magisk Props something, the other is lib something which seemed to help for DRM content (netflix etc)
8) Once I installed the Magisk modules for spoofing, I restarted, then cleared the Google Play Store & Play Store services data (In Settings>Apps>Manage Data> Clear all Data), restarted again.
9) I didn't bootloop ever. And even if you do, it's to either use fastboot (power + vol down) and flash the official rom back with MiFlash.
10) Nah it was completely normal.

- Re-flash stock rom via fastboot (power + vol down): https://c.mi.com/oc/miuidownload/detail?guide=2
Their links to roms in that guide are dead, you can get them here though: https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/miui/merlin/
Just make sure the ROM you download is of the right type (recovery for recovery method, fastboot for fastboot+miflash method) before downloading.
Have never needed to install a GSI before but as we're kind of stuck here without a single custom ROM, I thought I'd have a look.
AFAIK installing one of these would still leave the door open for stock recovery to be used should something go wrong, so as long as you've made a back up it should be fine.
I'm just curious as to the method of installation?
Has anyone had any experience with GSI ROMs before.
How was it? Did it work?
Would DSU image loader be an option?
I've attached what treble version we have and the relevant info required from the treble info app.
Apparently we have VNDK compatibility, not sure what that is but we have it.
Hi @dladz, I ran into a similar question three years ago when I bought a Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro. I was so used to using custom ROMs that I didn't even check before I bought it whether any custom ROMs would be available.
I was honestly shocked to see that that wasn't the case - there was absolutely NOTHING available - and that I had ended up with a device that couldn't even be unlocked right away, you had to wait and open a Mi account to be allowed to unlock it. I couldn't believe it at the time, I had come from a OnePlus X and had helped others root and install custom ROMs on other OnePlus phones without any problems, so I felt like I had just thrown quite some money out the window to run around with a mobile Chinese Spyware gadget I didn't want to use.
That was the first time I ever came across the term GSI ROM and it took me several weeks to figure out how to flash a ROM that I could also use afterwards. I knew I wouldn't want to have a stock ROM by a company that has very loose data privacy standards and even clearly states they collect your data (Lesson learned, I thought, I just had to buy a "proper" phone again and no more phones from budget manufacturers).
Several weeks later, after I had finally managed to get a custom GSI ROM working on my device I posted a lengthy how-to here on XDA.
Again, it took me weeks to get everything to work that I could not go without. And even then, I had to resign to the fact that many features of the phone would not be working (The fingerprint sensor, for example. Also, the Xiaomi Mi stock rom apparently had excellent GPS support (dual GPS support) but GPS positioning is just alright on the GSI ROM I'm using, also there were many cool Xiaomi apps like a compass app that wouldn't work outside MIUI). But I was more than happy I had gotten different GSI ROMs to work in the end and settled on one that I could live with, knowing my phone wouldn't be sending data to some Chinese servers constantly.
Now that the Mi 8 Pro has become a bit slower over time with all the latest apps, I took the plunge and spent a ton of money on the OnePlus 10 Pro 256 GB version only to be disappointed again, but this time by a company that used to be the epitome of openness when it came to custom development.
I got my OnePlus 10 Pro on release in my region in April, together with the 50W wireless charger and both have been sitting here since April, I'm not touching that phone until I can remove all the Spyware it comes installed with. At this stage, I'm not yet willing to go through the weeklong trial-and-error again that it took to get the Mi 8 Pro running a custom GSI ROM (also considering that some of its features never worked...), but if OnePlus doesn't get its **** together soon with the MSM tool and some openness towards developers, I will seriously just consider selling it on eBay again (It is brandnew after all) and will never buy another phone from OnePlus again. This has been an extreme disappointment and I'm still struggling to understand why they wouldn't support custom development any more. I had checked the OnePlus 9 Pro threads on XDA just to see if there's still custom development going on for OnePlus and it seemed everything was still OK, but now... .
On a more positive note: The Mi 8 Pro did eventually get some custom ROM love and there are now several ROMS to choose from, so to answer your original question - If you ask me, don't bother with GSI ROMs until we can be sure there won't be any custom ROMs for our phone. I'm still hoping that will be the case.
Gsi will work but no fingerprint or faceunlock.
Installing is easy just reboot to fastbootd open device with fastboot enchanted and delete all _cow files and reboot too bootloader flash stock vbmeta with
"fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification vbmeta vbmeta"
Download gsi that you like and flash it in fastbootd using "fastboot flash system gsi.img"

Unless someone posts a step-by-step guide with screenshots of a successful flash, I wouldn't believe anything.
This sounds more like it:

It took me weeks going back and forth, going back to stock and retrying again before I had any luck at all with my Mi 8 Pro.
Theoretically, it should work, but you can easily hard-brick your phone if you take one wrong turn and then goodbye to a phone with a premium price tag and no open MSM tool available... .

Did you try sending it in?
I'll make a guide just like I did with the Xiaomi 11t pro. Post it within a week
Already did it when I got the device but I use the fingerprint alot so not for me.
Only tricky is reflashing system when you want to go for stock again.
nah i reached out and oneplus never got back to me.
sorry to hear that :/

That would be great, I'll be your test subject, I can live without fingerprint and face unlock.
Think the camera might be a bit meh but maybe I can live with that.
Another odd thing is I got treble check and it said I cannot use treble ROMs?
No idea if that's true but that's what the app said.

Yeah camera is gcam but the main sensor is fine with it.
Every OnePlus 10 pro works with gsi, and general boot images as well. I will start tomorrow making the guide.
Will test if you can use rollback zip to get back to stock

Am regretting why I rooted without having zero knowledge please help me
Unfortunately, downgrading from MIUI 13 (A12) to MIUI 12 (A10/11) is/may not (be) possible because of the security patches and MIUI's anti-rollback feature. I could only downgrade my MIUI 12 back to 11 as it was still Android 10. You can unroot your device by flashing the MIUI using the Mi Flash. Just remember to choose a lock option and not Wipe Internal storage as you may lose the IMEI numbers and the whole NVRAM. I can't verify if it will work for you. It worked on my Redmi Note 9 Global (EEA). Also, I'm not sure about the MIUI and Android vendor downgrading as I've seen many people hard bricking their devices by forcing and bypassing the MIUI Recovery "Can't downgrade this MIUI version" error. Maybe I'm wrong in something. Feel free to criticize and fix my mistakes. Unlocking a bootloader and flashing a custom ROM is considered to be "irreversible and permanent" as the user's goal may be to get rid of the MIUI and full control of the phone/OS.

Lock option locks the bootloader, like it came out of box. You can find the boot.img file in the ROM's package or in the MIUI's folder called Images. Lock option needs to wipe the device as it's enabling back the security layers to the memory to prevent injecting bad codes into the device. Unlocking disables it on the other side, that's why a full wipe is necessary.

Just saw there are three options clear user data and clean and lock and one more can't remember which should i
I bought a used mi 11 ultra ..after that i figured out that the seller had been unlocked bootloader...rooted it...and installed a eu. Custom rom
.. i have checked for imei ..and it shows Mi activation lock is ON
Btw i tried to call the seller but he didnt answer... so i have been deceived
Now i dont know anything about MAGISK or custom roms ...
i heard if i format the phone it will be locked at mi account
also THE FINGERPRINT isnot working that i think the root or the custom ROM is the reason
So ..1)if i flashed a custom rom...will the phone be locked?
2) if i installed a magisk modules...will the phone be bricked or locked.. ? Iam afraid to do any clicks or actions so the phone could be bricked
I think the rom is defected ..as reverse wireless charging...fingerprint featers are not working
Sorry for my english ...
1). since your device's bootloader is already unlocked, mi activation lock is not a concern. You can always wipe it clean of all the password lock along with all your data if you haven't backup. a clean install of custom rom will not lock your device.
2). installing magisk will give you root access to android system. i recommend you don't do that unless you have specific reason to do so. It is risky to install suspicious module on your daily phone with banking apps and card information. and yes, you could brick your device with root access.
3). if you are new to custom rom, i recommend searching a tutorial on YouTube for "fastboot mi 11 ultra global stable"
Later you can read more on this forum to try out custom rom at your own risk.

So you mean that i can flash any custom rom ...the phone will not be locked ..
Bty I found that ..mi account in settings cant open it...seems clearly the seller did mi activation lock bypass ..can i permanently remove the activation lock ..so i can use my mi account and flash official roms.?.
Also security status in settings[ below about phone row] cant be opened...
And whats the best custom rom ..offers stability ...max .pubg fps..and optimized battery consumption...since the flashed rom is already defected ...fingerprint and wireless charging not working
.last thing .. if you dont mind ..send me your TELEGRAM or whats so i can ask you some steps to how flash roms ..so iam afraid i could miss anything and brick the phone .
Thanks
I use and recommend using xiaomi.eu ROM, i don't know if is the same there, but you can install it and don't need to root.
