Recommend me a phone - Off-topic

Hoping y'all can save me the headache of doing some initial research and rec me a good phone for someone who likes to install custom ROMs ,etc.
I like to buy flagship or near quality refurbs 2 or 3 years after release, something around or under $150, like new.
Need to be able to unlock bootloader, have good xda community support a plus. Fancy camera not necessary.
Previously had early s-series, nexus, pixel xl, pixel 2. S-series was great, nexus had tons of support.
The pixel 2 was verizon variant tho. Looking to avoid similar situation so I'm leaning away from google phones, tho I'd consider it if it fits the bill since I have Google fi and the nexus got good mileage.
Been looking at Samsung devices. They've just got so many of them, need a rec. Thanks.

[Q] VZW - Plan B (if no Nexus 6)

Hi Everyone! Former Android user/enthusiast who still remembers the good old days of the Droid X. That device was so much fun, especially with the various mods, etc. Having been on iOS for the last several years (mainly because of the iPhone camera quality and great support for Exchange) - I'm now growing frustrated and bored with Apple. I enjoy my 5S, but it's getting stale.
That aside, I was targeting the Nexus 6 as my next device but unfortunately it still hasn't made it's way to VZW and I'm not even certain it's coming soon (or at all). I want to consider the Note 4, but TouchWiz and some of the lag is really frustrating. Although, it is a great device overall.
For those who have used and/or own these devices and some of the others, what would you recommend? Is my best Plan B option the Note 4? Perhaps something else? Camera quality is a huge factor for me and something to be considered. Lollipop is desirable as well.
Thanks so much for any feedback. For what it's worth, I need to remain on VZW so other carriers are not an option.
If you can afford to, buy the nexus 6 at full price from Google or Moto. Moto even has a credit option. Nexus 6 works fine on vzw, I'm using one now.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Or buy one outright from T-Mobile like it did and works perfectly on Big Red.
You're on a Nexus fanboy site Here are my thoughts.
Nexus 6 - I'd at least try it, get one anyway you can. I got a 32gb blue from Moto and then returned it after my GPS 64 gb blue arrived, before the 14 day return window. I love it. All will work out of the box with an activated VZW nano sim so make sure you have that first before you switch to an N6. Everything seems to work well. Lollipop is nice although not all apps play nice. Unlock bootloader and root no problem. VZW hasn't messed with it at all which is a nice change, great phone.
Note 4 - TW, well what can I say, it may lag, you get all the Note stuff like Multi Window, stylus, etc.. The Nexus is almost the opposite of the Note as far as complexity. VZW locks this tighter than any other phone. If camera is your thing, from what I have read it may be a little better than the Nexus but not much (I am not a camera guy so I can not help here).
All, thanks for the replies thus far. I know bias and logic will steer towards the Nexus 6 at all costs. In general, I'm looking to exhaust all options and possibilities before pulling the trigger, especially if I have to dish out more money. But the N6 is so appealing

Your options are,
1) Motorola: Financing through 6/12/18 months or outright buy the device.
2) Google Play Store: Outright buy the device.
3) Carrier stores (TMo, AT&T, Sprint): Be wary on whether or not its carrier locked, can always unlock it but requires extra $$. Depending on whom you get it from, you may need to stay with that carrier for 1 month.
4) eBay/Craigslist/Swappa.
In my opinion, select the one that has it available asap. Christmas time is coming and deliveries won't be made before Christmas soon.
You mention the fun you had on the x modding. That ain't gonna happen on the Note. Great phone if your are happy stock.

[Q] any regrets?

Greetings All,
I'm on a Note 3 right now, and Monday or Tuesday it's time for my upgrade. I'm torn between a Note 4 and the Nexus 6. The last 3 devices I owned were Note 3, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy S2. I'm really looking to switch it up here, and step back from Samsung for a little while. The Nexus 6 is my first choice right now, seeing as the Note 3 has me pretty spoiled with the large screen and the s-pen. I guess my question would be, since I've been seeing mixed reviews for Nexus 6 around the web, does anyone here have any regrets buying this device so far? And if so, are any regrets stone cold deal breakers, or just minor issues? I'm really looking at giving "vanilla" android (if that's even such thing on xda) a run, and I've heard that the Nexus devices have had the most and best development as far as that goes. So I guess I'm asking if there's any major problems with the Nexus 6 that is not being mentioned in a standard review, before I go scoop one up in the next day or two. Many thanks in advance...
My only gripe with this device is the poor cell signal. My phone is constantly searching for a signal and it is really impacting my battery life. Other than that I am happy with this device, hopefully T-Mobile pushes the OTA update for WiFi Calling soon.
no regrets here. want unlockable, rootable device that I can do as I want with. this is my first Nexus device. got it from Moto direct. on VZW
have generally had moto devices in the past and like their overall solid construction.
like Samsung devices but they are always a but flimsy IMHO.
None at all, I came from my 2 G3's (D850 and F460) and haven't looked back. My wife liked my Nexus so much (except the size) she wanted a Moto X 2014 so I bought her one. This so hands down my favorite phone so far
If u get the nexus use HDR+ on your camera day and night looks amazing. I thought I would miss Samsung but I don't . I miss the knock on. With the g3 but that's something I can put on the nexus
My only regret was not buying this phone sooner.
I'd only have a regret if something with otherwise the same specs but a smaller screen came out within a month of release; I guess I also regret switching to T-Mobile right before release but that's a different issue.

If you have the time to tinker and are willing to wait for things to get fixed or turned into features, this is the phone for you. If you have been using Samsung devices and think you will get anything close to the features Samsung adds, especially to their Note line, forget it. One thing the Nexus will help you see and appreciate is all the care and hard work that goes into their overlay. Things you may have thought were standard user options turn out to be features of branded manufactured phones. I have much respect for the care that Sammy and LG and even HTC puts in their phones now that I'm pure Vanilla. So, yes// there are definitely some trade offs I was unaware of.

I can't find an alternative phone to replace my beloved N6

I've had this phone almost 2 years now. It's a beast, I love the big screen, it's fast and it's pure android. The other day I was thinking if it was time to replace and upgrade to a new phone and did a bit of research. I have a budget so nothing too fancy or any latest releases. So had a look at Mate 8, Mate S, Huawei P9, OnePlus 3, Lg V10, even 6p.
To be honest nothing wowed me. Similar specs, maybe few plus sides but nothing made me go 'ok that's it'. Maybe the fingerprint scanner but I'm not fussed really.
So anyone in the same boat let me know if you've find any good alternatives or are you waiting for Pixel phones. I'm interested if anyone else is looking for an upgrade.
My other option is to wait another year once the Pixel phones go cheaper and upgrade to Pixel XL.
So let me know what you guys think..
Cheers
the best phone i can find in the market right now is Samsung S7 edge
great battery life and awesome screen and is snapy for sure
the only bad side is touchwoz but you can get rid of it

I hate Samsung. I'd rather to buy a Nokia 5110 then a Samsung! Are you waiting for Pixel phones to upgrade?
Awaiting pixel xl and Honor 9 to see if I give up my N6. If they don't wow me, I'll just keep the N6 until something does.

but i don't like htc to be honest
imo the screen is the most important thing in any phone
that's why i recommend Samsung
s7 edge is awesome and dont judge this phone unless you have used it first

I don't really have high hopes for Pixel XL really. I reckon if I want to upgrade 6p is going to be my choice as the price will drop once Pixel is launched.
I'm in the same boat as you, I really wanted to upgrade to the Note 7 despite my hate for TouchWiz, but there are launchers to fix that. Until that whole battery explosion fiasco happened around the same time my contract ended so I decided to hold off for the Pixel phones. I guess I will know for sure next week, if the Pixel lineup isn't any good then I might get the Note 7 or S7 Edge.
If not I could wait for Samsung's new galaxy lineup, which will be announced early next year

That explosion thing totally put me off too. I don't think I can afford a Samsung at the moment anyway looks like my best bet is either wait for next year and buy cheaper Pixel XL or buy 6p now and use it next 2-3 years.
The 6p is pretty nice. I have a N6. Got a 6p used. I like good audio for podcasts mostly. I watch hours of video at work. Both running Pure Nexus. Very snappy. Its a tossup . I like them both equally. Got a 5x for the kid. She loves it.
there's nothing coming up that I feel is an upgrade across the board, I got the shamu on launch day and was also expecting to pick up a pixel but its been a let down so far with design/specs/price
I'm thinking maybe catching a 6p on fire sale price around thanksgiving or new year, or going with the cheaper midrange chinese oems(oneplus 3/saxon 7) depending on development support
all meh choices so there's a good chance I'll stay put with this device into next year

Op3, it is dev friendly. If is true that the new pixels will kill the nexus line, I think that I must give a prize to a company that is close to developers, no locked bootloader or similar bull..it

Why replace it? If you want new device, keep your beloved N6 and buy new one someday I personally can't live with only one phone, there are too many awesome devices out there (in my opinion). But if money is the problem and you need to sell N6 in order to be able to buy a new one, then it's a whole different story and understandable
I can't anything that wowed me like my n6. I would like a op3 but with the lack of band 13 for verizon, and my area is covered with it. I'm stuck with verizon for the most part, only have coverage with most of the rural area I live in. Sprint roams off verizon, the nearest tower for tmo is 15 miles away and I live in the mountians. ATT has the 2nd best coverage, but doesn't have service in my house, and it a lot of areas I go to. I used to be a samsung fan until they started with the knox crap, after my s3, I have never had an samsung device again. I was a fan of Motorola, until Lenovo took over. Looks like I'll be sporting my n6 for a while. At my work, I've actually been pushing the n6 for people to buy them lol

Well, my phone buying pattern has been like this;
Palm Treo 650, 2004
HTC Dream ADP1, 2008
HTC Vision, 2010
Samsuck Relay, 2012 (first and LAST samsuck I will ever buy)
Nexus 6, 2014.
Note the pattern: update when there is something WORTH updating to. For a little while, that was a 2-year cycle. THIS cycle will go longer, since this N6 is still perfect. Should have seen the condition of the palm treo when I was done with it -- the lots-of-pins plug was removed, had a capacitor sticking out the bottom of it, and a custom charging plug, a couple of resistors soldered onto the inside near the battery. That 2004-2008 range was REALLY desolate, sure wasn't going to buy RIM or FRUIT junk.
I will be buying my wife a Pixel XL to replace her N5, and sticking to the N6 for myself. Why? Well the pixel XL will have a better SoC, but not *so* much better that it will have ANY impact on my life.
As far as the 6p goes, straight across the board, it is either equal or LESS than the N6.
Screen: less
RAM: equal
CPU: less (the SD810 is definitely NOT as good as the 805, it was just adequate for them to be able to bump the number to say "64bitz!!!", which won't actually do any good in a phone).
Not that the 6p is a terrible phone or anything, but I already have something slightly BETTER than it, so it would be stupid to get one.
Actually, my N6 recently suffered a... mishap. Got some impact thanks to a 2 year old, that even with a ballistic maxx, caused a couple of cracks in the digitizer, and SHATTERED the AMOLED. Yeah, it was worth buying a new screen for it. TOTALLY worth it.

Hows the nexus 6. Looking to buy one

So i smashed my Note 3 LCD. Have a new one on the way but gonna get rid of it.
Looking for something different. Hows the nexus 6? I have Verizon, i will be looking into an unlocked one of course.
I have done some looking into on this one. so. I am looking for 6" screen or larger. I used to have a mega, loved it.
just wondering on some of your guys personal insight, rooting and Custom roms.
Thanks Guys!!
Well, you are coming from Samsung, so you don't have an expectation of long-term support. The Nexus 6 is at the end of support.
The 6 is very nice, but rather dated. It will never get official support beyond 7.1.1. Camera isn't great. I plan to use mine for another year, as I don't like the Pixel 2 XL choices.
It all comes down to what price do you pay for it. $200, probably OK. $300 too expensive.
Well im looking to of course keep it under $200.00
and a 6" screen. I like em big.
The ZTE Max pro is big, but not CDMA compatible.
Just something for a couple years.
I did like My Mega, lasted me about 6 years, and 2 screens lol.
I just dont like the feel of it, the back. i know a case.
Nexus 6
I ran a Nexus 5 for a year and a half. I got a refurbished Nexus 6 on eBay for the same price I paid for a Nexus 5. $200, so far my Nexus 6 is a great device even though it is dated. For the specs and developer support that the Nexus 6 has it is well worth running. As all Nexus devices are carrier unlocked getting activation on a device is easy. Paying anymore than $200 on a phone is a waste of money due to the fact that hardware and software upgrade so rapidly. I would recommend the Nexus 6 to anyone that knows how to use it right.
It def a good solid device. And yes over 200.00 for any phone is a waste.

AT&T Nexus 6 devices are locked to AT&T. How many are floating around locked to the carrier is unknown; the Death Star logo was found to be easily removed.
It's a good thing the OP doesn't have Sprint. They are extremely reluctant to the point of xenophobia about adding non-Sprint devices, including the Nexus 6, to their network.
Nope with verizon.
So I decided on a lenovo phablet 2. Found one inline for 159.99
6.4 in screen. Friend has one at work . I was pretty impressed.
But my gfs daughter likes the nexus 6. So I will pick one up for her for xmas.

It was a great phablet once, but I will not lie, It is very dated. My shamu is nearing replacement time, and it's been my favorite phone/phablet I've ever had simply due to the custom ROM/kernel options and ease of rooting/unlocking the bootloader. It's just outright heavy and huge too. TL;DR: I wouldn't buy it now, but would not have second guessed in 2014.
I bought my n6 after cracking my note3 screen... i think it was about 2 years ago.. i still love this phone.. but thinking the next OnePlus 5T or whatever the iteration will be is what i will go after.. though the current oneplus 5 seems pretty nice.. just small screen.. the new pixel 2 xl is alright but $$$ and i fear that devs wont be swarming to it because of the price

Looking for sub $200 phone, Nexus 6 makes sense?

Hello folks,
Looking for a sub-$200 phone with great XDA community support.
Nexus 6 is enough hardware for my requirements (almost no gaming) and its XDA support is great. Hardly any device has 31 ROMs available for it. I would like the device to last for 2 years at least. Do you guys think that the device will have good community support for another year or so?
Worth buying a mint condition device for about $160?
Thanks in advance.
At this point, expect to have to change a battery soon (at least within your 2-year window). The phone was great for its day and the 6" display is really nice to have. It is still functional, but a bit long in the tooth. I have to run corporate security software on my phone and can not root, so I am replacing my 6 soon (I don't like having my last security update be from a year ago), but I could see the 6 work in a different use case for longer.

I wouldn't buy it as the batteries of all N6 are getting old.
You might get similar performance on new devices.
Additionaly having 31 ROMs doesn't mean you have 31 developers, as most of the ROMs rely on commits 2-3 people do.
For $160 I consider it a good buy, if you don't mind changing the battery. A new phone at that price may well have a much worse build quality.
If need be, the Nexus is moderately easy to repair, and you can get all the parts cheaply from China.
Though we only have a few expert developers, even less experienced devs can usually manage to keep existing roms up-to-date.
Oreo roms are running great, Pie is available but with some bugs. We may never get Android Q, but I'm certain that we'll keep getting updated O and P roms for years.
I searched for a month or two few months back. Got a mint N6 64GB for $100 (obo) off fleabay. I wouldn't pay $160 but again my N6 was a want not a need.
I have two, both purchased used. One is a daily driver, the other I test on to avoid issues on the DD. I see no need to upgrade hardware—yet. When the price of the Pixel XLs come down? IDK.
I recently upgraded from the N6 after 3+ years. It's a great phone but is starting to show it's age. I picked up the Essential phone for 200 on prime day and the snapdragon 835 is much faster than the 805 in this phone. The Essential phone is much quicker with loading web sites, apps, multitasking. When I pick up the N6 now it's annoying after using a faster device. If i had limited budget I would get a 6p or Pixel Xl. Even a One Plus 3t would be better.

Personally I bought a Nexus 6 for the first time back in May 2018. Its my daily driver and I love it. Everything works and I get great battery life compared to most phones I've used. I consistantly get a little over 5 hrs SOT and only charge my phone when I go to bed. I play some Angry Birds at times but mostly used it for Youtube, web browsing, texting and calling. I bought mine refurbished on amazon for 135.00 USD.

I missed that deal but again that time everybody was so beating Essential phone with bad camera that I wasn't too sure if I really wanted to get that. But if it comes to $250, I am getting it for sure. Currently, its for $309 on amazon.
I know, one should take benchmarks with a grain of salt. 6p's benchmarks are below Nexus 6 so I am not too sure whats best in terms of performance. I am not looking for gaming performance at all. As long as it works as a daily driver, I am happy.
I could not find One Plus 3T or Pixel XL below $250.
Another option, I am considering Galaxy S7 as well.
FWIW, you can get a new Nexus 6 64GB on amazon right now for $180: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R1984I8/
It's or best offer.
I'm basically in the same boat. My N6 has been suffering from battery drain for the last month or two. Trying to decide between the Pixel XL or 2XL. This phone has been a game changer and thats why i've been holding off on replacing it after 3+years. Try looking on swappa for cheaper options for your phone. Its top right/ green button.
Sold my Nexus 5 and got an used N6 a month back for secondary use. My 7 inch tab was giving problems, so got this as a replacement to watch videos/Movies (Love the display) and browsing. Running on stock Nougat (Waiting for stable pie rom). I am happy with its performance and build.
