Dear OnePlus 3t owners,
Is it sensible to buy a new OP3T after OP decided to kill updates post-O?
On this device, easy root, no updates but plenty of community support.
On others (S8, XZ Premium, other mainstream flagships), loss of features with root, somewhat more updates with less community support.
Please help me take my decision, and any and all help is greatly appreciated!
It depends if you want a phone to play around and mod or you want a phone to have longer updates although longer updates are not a guarantee in any brand even Google promises updates for 2 years only. 3t is still a pretty good device and I think we'll have good dev support for atleast a couple of years

No update ? Hmm, don't know where you see this, OpenBeta 13 has just been release today.
Personally, I bought the OnePlus 3T like one week ago for 350e on Ebay, very happy with with.
Before it, I bought a OnePlus 5 day one, and, well, if I'm here today, it's because I was very disappointed (*cough* Jelly Effect *cough* ), and I bought the OnePlus 3T because I need a new device right now: I prepare a trip in South Korea, and need a new device to replace the time bomb OnePlus 2 (sorry about my life topic).
I share the idea about the fact that the OnePlus 3T was the true Flagship Killer: low price for very good specs.
You can see that the device is still in top 3 devices on XDA (behind Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ and LG G6), and for me, it's an indicator that the OnePlus 3T still has a bright future.
So yeah, OnePlus won't update the OnePlus 3T after Android O (but still security update tho), but he, we are on XDA, so plenty of custom ROMs available!
After all, I can't either ""force"" you to buy or not the OnePlus 3T. It depends on multiple points
-How many you want to put in your phone ?
-What is a good smartphone for you ?
-Do you care about officials updates of custom ROMs is ok for you ?
1. No updates: I actually meant "no major version updates".
2. So you have bought the 5 and saw that the 3T was better in comparison?
3. Are custom ROMs stable as stock on this device? (My 1st OP device, hope ROMs are as stable as stock to the contrary of Samsung)

Well, I'm a tinkerer but I really prefer more updates as I do prefer longevity (3-4 years of college, not enough $$$ to spend on phones). Thank you a lot!
I don't think it'll matter. Android O will be a nice send off and I think said that they'll provide security updates also. The community will support this phone for many android revisions and groups/people like PA or Sultan got the same camera quality on their AOSP roms
Also, you said that you bought the 3T to replace your "time-bomb" OP2. How is the 2 a time bomb exactly? And could the 3T become one too?
I'm content with the device on O but as soon as P rolls out a problem arises. Community ROMs are not exactly stable (coming from Samsung, no idea w/ OP3T though) and I've read somewhere that PA and/or Sultan received the blobs from OP through bribery or something ... What do you think?

For now, I don't know. I just flash a custom kernel on my device, but still under OxygenOS for now.

As I said, I don't know. But some recognized devs build ROMs which camera which seems to be as good as stock one (such as SultanXDA's ROM or ParanoidAndroid)
Also, you said that you bought the 3T to replace your "time-bomb" OP2. How is the 2 a time bomb exactly? And could the 3T become one too?

The OnePlus 2 was produced with the Snapdragon 810, which is, let's be honest, a sh*t. My user experience with it was pretty bad. Also, I don't know if you saw, but the Nexus 6P (which also has the Snapdragon 810) is victims of problems with this processor: actually, some users have a phone which can't even boot anymore. A user find a solution, but actually, the phone now uses 4 cores (the little cluster) instead of 8 (little + big cluster): I don't want the OnePlus 2 to ends like this, so I bought a new phone, just to be sure.

Custom roms are far more stable on the 3t then on Samsung devices. Less hacking needed.
Updates are kinda over rated at this point. With the 3t you can just build it yourself. Though I would avoid Los based or PA based roms. Those tend to have the most issues with things like instability.
Think of it this way: would you buy this phone and use it as is, or would you out a custom ROM on it?
It might not get any updates from UP after O, but it's gonna get at least 3 more years of support from Lineage and others.
There are a plethora of "stable" custom built ROMs by several very talented developers.
To say that community ROMs are not stable is an EXTREMELY uninformed comment.
I've been running some form of a custom ROM for the past 7 years over a a multitude of phones following well known developers that in my opinion and experience put out better device software than the factory.
If you do choose the OP3T, you'll not be disappointed as it's a quality device with excellent community support.
Like could I build "OxygenOS P" myself?
And if LOS and PA ROMs aren't stable, is AOSP so? And that makes for a tradeoff for camera quality, as an earlier comment said that camera is the best on PA and Sultan (Sultan's being LOS based AFAIK)

Seems like it's going to be the OnePlus 3t after all, and what remains to be done is convincing my dad that an unknown China OEM (in local market's view - not our view) can make solid hardware.

This is relative. Coming from various Samsung devices, namely the Galaxy Grand 2 and the Galaxy Star (the crappiest device known to mankind) and servicing others including flagship models, it does happen that custom ROMs are, to say the best, variable in stability, ranging from crappiest (CM on the Galaxy S Duos and on the Star) to semi-stable (the stuff on high-end phones.

I am a tinkerer by nature, no Android phone is mine unless the bootloader is unlocked, custom ROM, kernel, overclock, and later on, development.
I am only concerned about official updates as this may mean eventually being deserted by the community. Is this the case here?

Yes AOSP tend to be more stable then the other two. Just look at the thread and you will see issues with bootloops and other things. Yet AOSP based roms do not suffer from this.
The camera is good enough no matter the range. I tested both and to be honest it made little difference.
No you are not gonna build Oxygen OS as it is closed source but then again why would you want to?
Stability, mate. Heard that OOS is the most stable, then comes AOSP, then comes LOS.
And if it were possible to build OOS, the update issue would be fixed of course. But alas, it isn't possible, as you said.
No. Most ROMs run on the 3 and the 3T. I mean you flash the same zip for both phones.
This is good because our community is the size of 2 phone's communities. You will have plenty of support later on.
Take nexus 5 as example, its still getting regular rom updates such as PA or lineage, this device will be no different.. it will receive android updates from xda community for a long time

By "stock rom" do you mean vanilla ? , then why did you get a samsung galaxy device? Specially a note series one? Better get a pixel or something like it, why getting a samsung galaxy note device, to later downgrade it?

I have never understood why people do this.
They want some high end phone first. Then suddenly learn about custom roms and are like i want to flash this now.
Better donate the extra money to devs here instead of spending stupidly.
I'm just adding my sentiment. If you want stock Android, get a Pixel device or Motorola or Nokia or almost anything else. You buy a Samsung device for the features they add. If you don't like or use those features, then don't buy something for $1,000 just to essentially cripple it afterwards.

Lineage 15.1 was released yesterday for the note 8, it is in alpha stage though.
Clean Android not only reduces these devices in terms of function (S Pen, Iris, gestures, etc), but also removes the appeal of Sammy phones. I'm using Pie on my z2 Force, as well as my Pro 3. Whilst both have active development, my N8 is the new king on the hill.
Anyway, it's best to buy another phone like the Moto Z4, Poco F1, Pixel, or Essential for plain Android.

I think that some people are just plain stupid. They don't relise that most of the features of Stock Android come from other android OEM skins. Just because Stock Android is simple doesn't make it better. Even 3rd party Custom OSes don't support the same features on a Note device.

Couldn't agree more on this. I bought my note 8 after i have used a note 8 port rom on my j7 2016.
And honestly i will prefer the note this way and i haven't even rooted yet. I miss viper4android so much but atleast we have Dolby atmos in N8.

Exactly, you buy a note device for what i gives not what you can mod it into using a custom rom. Root and xposed is an other thing, but custom rom, that too an AOSP ? Completely dumb people out there.
I think it is about choice, not stupidity, like it's said a couple of times here.
Let people do what they want with their phone, like you do.
The thing is i am a university student and thought that i would use the pen.. turned out i didn't use it nor did i use any of the other features..
Second i am not from the US so pixel is not an option unless i would pay around 100 to 200 extra dollar to get it without a warranty.. this goes to the oneplus..
Other thing is the samsung devices are premium with good camera and great displays which is important for me..

You do know that once you install a custom OS on the Note. The camera quality goes down. As custom OSes do not have the same camera optimisation software as the Samsung Stock OS.

Of course yo would, that is the point, once you install a stock android,, the camera will no longer be driven by the samsung software, exactly what iceepyon told you, the samsung hardware is specifically constructed to work efficiently with samsung firmwares

People are not "dumb or stupid" if they're looking for customization options on XDA. They're maybe "wrong" in some cases. Just tell them why.
To answer your question:
These days there are too many flagships and midrange phones out there. Also The oems use different hardwares and barely release their source codes and drivers. Plus, stock roms are way more feature rich and fluid than before. For all these reasons the development of vanilla based roms is limited and less reasonable for most phones. Except pixel phones and Android one phones. Even there, all different roms are lineage-based and basically the same, with same features and same bugs! But different visuall traits!
There is a Lineage os for note 8.0 but in very early stages. About other custom roms (stock based), they do a great job in terms of features and removing so called bloatwares, but personally I recommend you staying on stock because unlike few years ago, stock roms get you better performance, features, battery life, etc. I'm currently using pixel 2 and note 8 and trust me, you get bored by plain android!

Now I'm going to watch Taylor Swift music videos and read the comments, when I get home.
My wife has had her S4A for years now and she really, really clings to it. But as time moves on, it has developed mechanical issues, display glitches and the KitKat release it carries has become problem-ridden, too. Recently I managed to obtain a barely used demo unit for a few bucks and decided to look how far it can catch up to the present software-wise before giving it to her.
Disappointment #1: Unfortunately, no pie ROM whatsoever, it seems.
Disappointment #2: I found out that apparently there are LOS releases of at least Oreo for the S4 active and they look really promising... but they keep lacking support for the camera for almost a year now. Black pictures: not an option for her.
So I wonder, is Android 7.1 really the end of the road for the S4 Active or does anyone here know about ROMs in the making that might actually help carrying the last semi-rugged and waterproof Samsung phone that features both exchangeable battery and a QI option along for some more time?
I'd really like to hear anything that might give hope
P.S.: for the time being I decided to go with the RR 7.1 ROM which seems to do quite well... for its age.
This is my main phone now and it's so sad that literally Nougat is the end of the road for such amazing device, i recommend you LOS 7.1.2 on the dev thread there's an user that is been updating the sources of the rom, i hope it helps.. btw i'm switching to a note 5 soon, my active is barely working.

I've owned every single Nexus device up until the Nexus 6P, and have owned every single pixel device... I remember that with each Nexus phone the support scene was so robust that you look forward to a new phone to come out and see development on it...
For some reason pixel phones are one of the only phones that don't get love from any custom ROM development out there.. you see that lineage OS does not support our phone and has not supported our phone since the Pixel 1 officially. Paranoid Android has not supported our phone at all since the Pixel 1 , And the last official update from them was in 2017.. why is it that our phone being one of the latest phones does not get love?
The main thing that I've heard is that our phone is too expensive to build for, but I have seen the OnePlus 7 pro have vast support in the community and it is almost up there as far as pricing goes as the pixel.
I have always been one to contribute to donations or to work that's worth donating to, dirty unicorns has been a great ROM, but if you think about it our selection of ROMs can be counted with one hand .

I also believe the pixels don't attract the custom rom enthusiasts like us they are made & sold & marketed to people to be a iPhone competitor also I feel a lot of developers are getting older & many devs just support a few phones that's it & there are not as many devs on the scene like there were years ago unfortunately I remember have my OG Droid from Verizon the support was crazy unfortunately I feel we have to look at it this way its a end of a era for google phones sad to say
Those custom roms are made to make our experience feel like Pixel. They take here and there from pixel feature. Since we are using pixel software, so what the point of having the custom rom? Kernel is more important. Thanks god we have artemis and kiri. Soon we will have Proton or maybe Sultan.
Btw we dont have TWRP support while there is for OP7Pro. Install a custom rom or make one is pain in the ass.

Better off going back to the 7 pro.It jus got Dual boot twrp. I'm running Oos and lineage as of this writing tomorrow might be different :laugh: . I got a 3xl and it lost twrp after Android 9 you can fastboot boot it with half the functions not working the 7t the same way an id imagine 8 pro be the same. Only way to have fun with Magisk on the 3xl Android 10 is to be running a user-debug build. Without the debug build magisk will let you overlay the system an look at your data but that's bout it. The way things look nowadays looking alot more locked down then they used to wait til Android 11 hits even more so is the case. Now Google going to build their own chipset like Samsung with help from Samsung Which will bring us one more step closer to Google Fuschia instead of Android
ROMs in general have gone down hill.
The need for them isn't really there. Early on, Android phones had tons of issues, shortcoming and limitations... ROMs were a way around that, to get the phones to work the way we wanted and the way they should have come out of the box.
Now? Most phones are really good, and there's not much to improve. ROM's don't really have much to offer any more, other than to a shrinking pool of users who want to tweak their phones more than they actually USE their phones...
Adding upon all comments above one of the reason is people are stuck with IOS. They don't know the actual power of Android. Who ever tries the Android are forced to go back to ios again because lack of facetime and other apps that are only available only ios

Realistically, what's the power of android these days? Yes, you can tweak icons and the status bar and stuff, which 99.99% of phone owners don't care about...
The differences between the platforms isn't as great as it once was... I am on an iPhone 11 Pro at the moment and its a great phone... I want to come back to Android at some point but the watch situation on Android is a joke. And for the Pixels... they just never live up to the hype. I love Samsung, but updates still suck. There is OnePlus but some of the features like Wifi calling don't work on ATT half the time...
I prefer Android overall, but if you want the complete package with a good watch, Apple has the better package.
I had high hopes for Essential but we saw where that went...
I wish that Google would put out a pixel without giant bezels, that didn't have a last generation processor, etc... They will put out a phone in November that's using the same specs as phones that came out last month...

Realistically, today, what does the average person need root access on their phone for? I haven't rooted or ROM'd in several years... The tinkerer in me wants to, but I never find any compelling reason to...
I just don't care enough about what font my Instagram icon uses...

my root need are viperfx, swift theme installer, fingerface , Sd maid ( save 2GB in every week when cleanup), etc
I have a Galaxy Note 10+. One of the heavy flagship phones from last year. There's about 3 ROMS and the communication in the threads is just about non-existent.
It's kinda sad because I remember my Note 4 having a ****load of AOSP ROM options and this phone has 1 that hasn't been updated in months. I would love to root/flash a ROM on my phone but I think the main thing is a lack of developers. Most have probably moved on and don't see a point in developing custom ROMs when most phones nowadays are capable of doing almost anything. The main reason I rooted/flashed ROMs was for the ability to customize my phone to my liking.

Exactly, and today, so many stock phones allow most of the customization that ROMs used to have to provide... And if not, install a different launcher and there are your themes...

IMO Pixels don’t have the fan base of the type of enthusiast that install custom ROMs and such. Higher spec phones like OnePlus and stuff like they are more heavily modded i feel like because those types of people are attracted to the specs. Pixels don’t have specs that are anything to write home about. Where as a OnePlus with 12GB of RAM is pretty impressive.

That's probably it right there. The latest and greatest Pixel, uses specs that are already obsolete... Every year, they bring half year old specs and release their new phones with comparable specs to everyone else's specs that are already on the way out.
My thoughts below are mine, and mine only..
The reason you don't see as many custom roms here on xda imho is because it's no longer a hub that's a viable place for most roms to gain any value. the passion for development hasn't died. There are many great new features, and things users would love. Sure, the pixels are great out of the box, but you can say that for any flagship that has come out recently.
Don't get me wrong, xda is great, I'm just saying you shouldn't think devs and users have lost interest because their content isn't on xda.
I mean you're right,. It's different than the days of installing a ROM on a Droid x or something and actually seeing a notable difference between Moto blur and not. Or my note two with some of the different runs I could get on it. I don't know, I think I would like the freedom to make different apps different notifications so that I could customize notifications by app or by person a little easier for text messages. Little things like that that I feel like I used to get in some of those older arms but maybe not maybe I'm just misremembering or something.

Why not try reading before you post, and make yourself look foolish.
Samsung said that all flagships after and including the S10 will get 3 years of Android OS updates. It's a bit unfair for us Note9 and S9 users so I created a petition to Samsung asking them to reconsider adding the S9, S9+ and Note9 to the 3 year major updates support program as well. The more people that sign it the better chance we have of Samsung acknowledging it!
Since our S9's launched with Android 8.0, I don't think that Samsung will update to Android 11... And in my opinion, Samsung already done a great work with S9's, bringning OneUi 2.1 and 2.5 later. Anyways, I'll sign the petition.

Since our S9's launched with Android 8.0, I don't think that Samsung will update to Android 11... And in my opinion, Samsung already done a great work with S9's, bringning OneUi 2.1 and 2.5 later. Anyways, I'll sign the petition.

I agree as for me OneUI updates are way more important than Android ones and I'm happy we got 2.1 and will get 2.5 but it doesn't hurt to try to get OneUI 3.0 too
if we won't get android 11 (and probably won't imo) ,do you think that at least a porting from other phones would happen unofficially? i saw this trend many times in the note series
If Samsung considered bringing OneUI 3.0 for the galaxy S9 series, they should adopt a better RAM management algorithm because 4GB for the S9 isn't enough anymore. The performance is already messed up after OneUI 2.1, and there's a lot of overheating, and I always find a lot of unnecessary apps running in the background for no reason, like secure folder apps (I rarely use Secure folder), gallery stories (which I disabled long time ago from gallery settings), Samsung pass (which I don't use frequently), Galaxy Buds (I only used it once when I tried my friend's buds), Gallery app and Samsung keyboard which always take 100-300MB each, even when not in use, and many other apps.
I know the list is very long, but it's driving me crazy
PS : All of this happens even if all apps are closed from the Recent menu.
I don't think it is really necessary, Android 11 most important feature is the introduction of inbuilt screen recorder, which our Galaxy S9 already has since Android 10... so we really aren't missing much, only some notifications changes and some other minor things.
You shouldn't really care about receiving this update... it probably will only make your device slower to be honest hahah
If you REALLY want this... wait for custom roms, they will be lighter and faster than the official one would be.

Samsung usually adds a lot of extra features in every new Android OS version, and I'm sure it will be the case with OneUI 3.0.

We deserve this update because the Note 10 lite is just as powerful as the S9 and it's still eligible for android 11 and 12.
