I really want the Note. Almost bought the 7 before I moved across the world, then all that happened. Been waiting and waiting.. but the fingerprint reader location and speaker quality is a no go for me..
Even if all they do in the note 9 is move the fingerprint reader to the front and improve the speakers then I probably want to wait for the 9.
Fingerprint reader to front
Better speaker(s)
Think the will?
S9 leaks are not giving me much hope.
No word about some things like camera and speakers yet but the fingerprint reader is just as bad as S8. Just as curved screen. Barely anything..
you want to wait 9 months?
thought the leaks put the scanner under the camera in the middle of the phonr?
They haven't done it yet, but who knows what might come in the future...at this point it's really just a guess. If those features are truly deal breakers then I guess the answer is to wait for now, but then again no guarantee they will be there in Note 9 either... at least as of now, as far as I know... . Note 8 is still a great phone imo, but features mean different things to different people of course.

Really?? Do you want to wait for note 9? I think the next Galaxy Note can be Note X!
I recommend you to buy the note 8 now, and later when the note 9 is released, trade your old note 8 for the new one..
Oh, Note 8 is AWESOME, buy it NOW!!

The leaks are for the S9 moving scanner to under the camera.
It's widely hoped/believed that Note 9 will have it in the display but nothing for sure yet.
I will wait for sure if the phone is a compromise in too many ways.
No need to spend money on something better in some ways and more difficult to use in others.
It should be all around better. Ideally...
Yes. You can sell used or trade in but the fact is still you spent $400-$500 that year for what?

Mate, you can wait for the Note 9, but when it comes out the rumours are the Note 10 will be absolutely kick-a$$.. Gonna wait again...
Technology moves so fast that if you wait for the next best thing you'll end up with nothing...
Any rumours you hear about the Note 9 are just that, rumours... Things change in the blink of an eye and so do the specs on the smart phones not yet released....

There have been Zero leaks or rumors about the S10 or the Note 10.
I speak to a few parts insiders each month and there is not much new info.
It's not one of those.. the back fingerprint reader is terrible. The move back to front would be worth the wait of 9 more months.

That is for the s9. Hopefully the Note 9 will have it where the home button is.
Anyway, for the S9 it looks really similar to the S8, s8 Plus except the finger print scanner is set up slightly different in the back. Otherwise the phone basically looks just like the s8 and will have a newer processor. Otherwise looks like nothing much different on the s9 versus the Note 8. If you have a Note 8 I wouldn't upgrade to the s9. People with the s8 might hold off too.

If they don't even improve the speakers or add some form of dual speakers it really will just be a processor bump.
Not very compelling.
But if the Note 9 puts the scanner under the screen and improves the speakers that will be a very big change.
Just get a V30 and be happy. I got one for my girl and she loves it. The screen is great , speakers are alot better (quad dac also) and the buttons seem to be on a place you would like. I pretty much bet Samsung will never fix audio , and who knows where the fingerprint reader will be. Might as well be happy with your phone, not sure why you would want a phone that doesn't have what you want on it.

I don't think you get the point....
Every new phone will be awesome in the first week of release, then come the nitpicks.
You either bite the bullet at some time or will be window shopping from now to eternity, there is always gonna be a bigger better piece of hardware as tech doesn't (generally) de-evolve and there will always be something that will annoy...
That's the human condition, to never be satisfied for long...
Anyway, your choice....
If you wait for the Note 9 then you can wait for the Note 10 or 11.
Do what a normal person would do and buy them all.

V30 is a great phone. Shocker from lg.
Just the screen issues, camera isn't quite right and I want the pen.
If it was 3t price it would help it a lot.
Was really hoping Huawei would nail the mate 10 but they messed it up big time with the too hot, too cold models. Their prices are always too high too.
When Samsung flagships starts to come down in price a few months after release it's hard to see the point in buying anything else.
Can get a note 8 for 720, V30 for 850, mate 10 pro for $850. I'll take the note..

I don't think every new phone is awesome. Many aren't worth "upgrading".
So yeah. There is a good time and phone to buy. Keeping phones for 2-3 years is smart. Especially as we are hitting the 1k level. The cost of "upgrade"itus keeps getting higher.
Our phones have become too addictive. Many aren't being sensible.

Hi All,
After learning that Oneplus were making the decision to announce and then launcher the (ok it's a nice phone) Oneplus 5T after just 5 months? I've never heard of that happen to a flagship which wasn't a complete failure and had as much going for it as the 5 does?
The Oneplus has pretty much disappeared from all locations where it was available, which means there can't be that many new devices out in the wild anymore if any at all, do you think if kept in decent condition that it could be something of a collectors item in the months / years to come? Maybe going a bit far with the collectors item thing but you know what i mean, like a niche piece of kit that you can't get hold of no more.
Just a thought, because unless people had the money or an upgrade in that time frame, it just wasn't going to be available and now it's gone?
Compared to the 3 and 3T the 5 and 5T are in a unique situation it's a slightly different form factor the finger print is on the front and it retains the capacitive non on screen buttons batterly life is every so slightly better than the 5T.
Everything else is the same so true I can definitely see a few anti 2:1 bezeless phone users prefer the one plus 5 form factor. Although i probably wouldn't go as far as to call it a collector's item. The main blemish on the OnePlus 5 is the jelly phone screen thing aside from that i can see a manufacturer offer both models and both selling reasonably well. With jelly phone screen i think it might skew to the newer phone, it doesn't bother me personally but I know there are people that see the affect all the time and that could get irritating. I on the other hand either don't see it or just got used to it.

They did the same thing with the 3 and the 3t. If any were gonna be collectable it will be the stars wars version or the other limited versions of the device and even then the price will still go down.
As for caliber of device. It is still a mid range device really. Nothing too special.

Lol collectors item yea I know a bit much I did write that btw.
Point I'm making is, the release time was so small, now it's not being made no more, it's not even close to a year.
Any idea how many units were actually made?
A limited edition Zippo only has 250,000 made sometimes less, no how many they sold / made but it's definitely a niche phone now.
I would agree that cellphones don't work like that. When a new model is out, the previous one takes the "second hand status", in which people will be interested in, but only at a super low budget.
Then you have to keep in mind that OnePlus is an "unknown" brand. See all the reviews on specialist websites, all say it's so great but look around you, it's Samsung and Apple, cause people don't read that.
And if we think that OP phones are special for developpement community, also take a look at how people around us don't even change the default wallpaper that their phone had when they turned it on first time
To get back on subject, that's why it's actually terrible that OP releases a flagship so fast, it just kills the value of what we do have in a flash. And there are already rumours of the OP6 coming in march (and any rumour about One Plus phones is nearly always true).
Nice for those * silly * enough to go from 5 to 5T

Mid range??
Maybe we base out caliber of device on something completely different, I personally go by performance and stamina, along with a few other things.
The Oneplus is not mid range, the Snapdragon 600 series devices are mid range, the Oneplus is 100% high tier, price no but performance and hardware yes.

I agree, I'll not be getting the 6, it's HTC for me all day long from now on, unless something groundbreaking comes out, couldn't go for Sammy again, they're dead to me, their OS is just nasty now, doesn't even feel like android no more.
I know what you mean with their release timing, but I think they've overshot it here surely, 5 months? That's insane, and for a device which is over the mid range bracket at £507 with shipping? That's not cheap to only be told that in 5 months it can't be bought no more?
I dunno, I had a thought and thought I'd put it out there, collectors item no ok that was a bit far but definitely a niche product (popularity aside)

Yeah.
And to add to those thoughts, one might buy let's say a Samsung Note 8. It cost twice the price of the OP 5T, but you get the top of your brand of choice for a year. If you try to do that with One Plus phones, that will cost you more than that over the same period.
And your Samsung will probably still have a great resell value...
I like OP phones, but to me, they are really doing a terrible thing to their fans here.
Oh well, let's see how it goes

lol ok so HTC who always make a flag ship device which is always has been comparable in price to Samsung ( I'm assuming that's what you're comparing it to) HTC usually misses a few features out, LG again top tier, again missing things not in others, can't see your point mate.
I know what you're getting at but I disagree wholeheartedly.
The oneplus is anything but a mid range device and in many ways it's superior to flagships like the S8
more ram
more internal memory
faster CPU and better utilisation of said chipset, better use of battery and stamina than the S8 /S8+
dual cameras
fastest charging on the market
Where is the oneplus falling short?
SD slot? water proofing ? stereo speakers ? None of those features makes a high end device.
All of the other OEMs are missing the same things, not to mention that Oneplus listens a lot more than the other OEMs.
edit: anyway, this is moving off topic so I'm leaving this here, plus the topic probably want received how I intended it

it won't but the screen will evolve, the back of the phone had always been by majority unutilised, either way you can be sure that it'll never stay the same, things evolve or people get bored and even if we didn't, companies believe in evolving and ever changing so it'll happen in some way shape or form, hopefully for the better and not just for change.

Thread closed at OP request.
Just wanted to get a feel for how people are with their p20 pros
Personally I want to change very little.about it, I'm rooted and have my normal rooted apps, adaway, titanium, 1 magisk module swap torpedo (kills the swap file, not needed for 6GB of RAM)
Other than that, the theme, the signal location, the camera, it's all pretty amazing.
I expected more from the battery but I can live with it.
The only thing I think that will annoy me is the lack of ROMs, but it's hurting a lot less than it did on other odd devices I've bought:
Sony Z1
Note 4
I think if Huawei would have flooded the globe with one variant with Google esq updates, it would have been one of those phones that alter a generation , kind of like the HD2 and Nexus devices did and Oneplus devices are.
Instead we've got several variants with a completely insane and i mean insane after market development scene, it's like everyone got the memo but me lol.
How have you found yours for the time youve had it?
I love it.
The battery is immense, and because I regularly have days with 8hrs plus SoT, it's a godsend.
I knew the camera was good, but it's better than I hoped, so much so that I got rid of my compact camera and my DSLR gets much less use these days.
I don't understand what you mean by lack of apps?

Sorry pal I meant lack of ROMs.
8 hours? Not bad but consider if it was as well optimized as hear vanilla phones.
Oneplus 5 835 - No limits ROM. 14 hours 30 minutes.
Battery size is 3400 Vs the Huawei having 4000
Lol I expected more
We should be clearing 10 hours daily

That decision was made for them by the US government. I am not sure what the whole story is behind it but no Carriers in the US want anything to do with Huawei now.
With carrier support and good advertising they could have made a decent splash in the US overtime.
Even if they support band 71 it's a tough sell to spend so much on a phone that won't have any US warranty backing.

All I know is, Oneplus have come and dominated.
They've provided for everyone.
Bootloader? So so easy.
Speed? The one thing parents and kids need when you hand your phone down to them.
Oneplus stands alone.
Huawei have the know how to be technically and globally dominant, but theyve missed out ingredients that matter.
I'll never buy another huawei, as much as I love it and I did I couldn't commit over £1,000 to a company that gives so much then breaks it with poor policies, awful selling tactics (models) and ridiculed hardware.
Maybe it'll be different one day but ive had this conversation before about a giant (HTC) and they never recovered,.
I'm curious to see how Huawei do next year, I have a feeling that they'll be reversing their decision very soon.
I just fear it'll be too late.
PS I really really wanted the p20 pro to succeed or even has suede hdmi via USB is superb.
They did swerve the bootloader decision and release a firmware for vanilla Android.

Not sure I'd buy the op6 tho.. it wouldn't last as long as the op5.
But I agree with you pal.

I think op held back on the battery and going to improve it for o6t
Sold mine. The software update situation was just a joke and frustrated me more than the benefits the rest of the device brought to me.
Shame but learnt my lesson now. Pixel or OnePlus devices for me going forward.
I'm having mixed feelings about the device. I have bought it twice, as I wasn't happy, so I could compare and find out if the problem is the device or me.
So far, I'm very happy with build quality, usability, design, screen and functionality. The camera of my second device is better than the one of the first, but I'm struggling to get good battery life with both. 3 hours DOT, maybe four if I'm lucky. I think that's not really good, and as both devices behave like this, the problem must be me. Not really sure what I'm doing wrong, as even my old rusty iPhone 6 can give me 3 hours of DOT, so I expected a lot more in this aspect. Other than that, I really like this device.
It's amazing
The missing notifications from some apps is a problem, wish someone could do a guide about how to fix that
Also, battery drains pretty fast, i can't get a full-day through it
Are VoLTE and VoWIFI draining the battery faster, any thoughts on that?
Best phoned I ever had. Slow at getting upgrades but can live without it. Battery, camera, performance are fantastic. How people can complain about the battery life? I am a heavy user and and can't kill the battery in one day
I get 3 hours SOT. I don‘t think that‘s stellar.
I switched from Samsung to p20 pro and thats the best ive ever done.
I love the p20 pro, its amazing, the screen, the smotheness, the SOT and so on.....
Greetz
Ah yes, the Note 20 Ultra will be my last in a long line of Samsung phone ownership. I'm just not satisfied with this product. That's not to say it's a bad phone but there are other tempting, albeit less expensive options available nowadays. I was happier with the Note 10+. I'm not impressed with the Note 20's cameras the 108mp camera makes no noticeable difference. The large sensor is great but it tends to blur the edges of the object in focus quite frequently. I can't take a selfie without my teeth, which are white, looking like a stick of butter. Battery life is not impressive at all. Basically, there is nothing that justifies the the price I paid for this device and I wish I stuck with my Note 10+.
Fully agree.
The price tag (even if I did not pay for that phone) is insane for that device:
Camera? Lol. Quality not impressive and the 50x zoom garbage produces very nice "Pixel arts" composition. Oops sorry I think I used the word "quality" in that sentence, surely inappropriate in that context.
Battery? lol. I am barely using the phone, it hardly lasts from morning to evening, then battery almost empty
Apps? Junkware? My phone is/was full of links to paying craps from Samsung
The bulge? the weight? Recipe for disaster.
The headphones? The wireless charge? Oh wait, those are extra to be paid separately...
The fingerprint sensor on the screen? lol. Prevents me from using my phone regularly. Rubbish.
CPU oh let's remind that I don't have the same as international, I have the exynox junk.
Samsung junk to "protect" (their business) and lock your phone, so you don't remove their junkwares.
I don't see what that device has more than devices costing 25% of the asking price.
Good experience, it will save me (my own) money for future purchases.
The device is only worth it ( for me anyways ) when heavily discounted via trade in. Otherwise , there's no way in it's worth $1399 plus tax , that's for sure.
I had a brief run with a OnePlus 8 Pro, 799$ black Friday deal, and that was a better value choice over all. However, if one doesn't intend to root then it can be a rather boring device.
I heard that in another brilliant Apple like move that Sammy will not include chargers bundled with their phones.
Samsung Galaxy S21 now looks likely to come without a charger, like the iPhone 12
Samsung may follow Apple's lead
www.google.com
A Green move designed to steal more of your green... naturally.
Sammy, you've changed, but I'm not seeing rainbows... I'm seeing red.
The exynos version is a bad phone... The snapdragon is better but also doesnt worth 1400$ or €. With worldwide snapdragon for 699-799€ for the ultra would have been an amazing deal...
I'm quite happy, the IQ from the main camera is better than my Note 9 by quite a stretch, and the IQ holds up well in this camera shootout (see GSMArena's camera shootout between Mate 40 Pro, iPhone 12 pro max, Sony Xperia 1 MkII and Note 20 Ultra).
Its well built, I have the exynos version and I'm getting through 2 to 3 days between charges with 7 to 8 hrs SoT. I did debloat a bit but have all the original functionality, dont have it in 5G mode as this does eat battery (Dont have 5g here yet), use wifi 90% of time so phone data is off. I have no issues with fingerprint scanner, works well.

The really funny part is Samsung can't handle criticism. If you ever talked to a SK based Samsung rep you'll see what I mean. I enjoy drilling into them immensely. Some of that is cultural and the rest is poor training.
They don't interface well with irate Westerners
Tough.

Well politely to them would be to beat around the bush and never get anything resolved or escalated. If you consider the same rep asking you the same questions 2 even 3 times then yes, yes it's a quit pleasant and polite conversation.
However if on the other hand you tend to be assertive like me, it's the stuff of nightmares for a mealy mouth SK rep. You can feel their bp rising; that's the most satisfaction you're likely to get.
I would rather talk to the wall...
Samsung has the worst customer support of any large corporation I have dealt with extensively.
Worse than Toshiba even Sony... Samsung is that bad, #10.

Best customer services that I ever recall was ironically an american firm called Cerwin Vega, mind you this was back in the mid 90s and in the UK. Their UK senior representative came to my home to check out an issue with my AT-100 speakers. Lol

I've had the note 9, note 10+, and now the note 20 ultra. I absolutely loved the note 10+ and wish I would of never traded it in for the note 20 ultra piece of dung. What a pile of junk rolled into a barely bronze metal container. I've had many smartphones and loved my Xiaomi phones. What happened with the note 20 ultra?
Yes their customer service is wretched! I needed damage repaired on my S6 tablet. I bought the accidental damage protection plan with my tablet on Shop Samsung's website. Samsung took almost 3 weeks to fix it and kept saying I had not paid for accidental damage coverage. Needless to say after spending a stupid amount of time 2 to 3 times a week on the phone I finally got it covered and got it back only to find it now glitches and crashes and has horrible battery life now. Yay!

Fo you have the exynos? The snapdragon is way better... No heating, better battery, better mobile reception...
I expect to buy the S25U or an iPhone 15PM in January 2025 and then switch to it just as the phone loses support.
Honestly, given that they've promised 3 OS updates, I guess they'll be pushing out Android 14 around that time?
I'll turn this device into just a DeX machine or sell it off for scraps or maybe use it as a security camera or something if there's an app for that.
If Android OEMs haven't switched to 6 years of full-fledged updates by 2025, then, I'm probably going to be dumping them for iPhone.
No earlier than 2 years
Probably the new Pixel but I upgrade every year or 6months.

2-3 years depending on what is on offer at that time. Won't keep it longer than 3 years in any case.

I feel you man. Have seen you struggling to find a solution to the camera wake lock for weeks now... Can understand how frustrating it can be.
What I'm surprised with, is how good the battery was before the May update. It's like they broke something basic within the OS.
I'd give up soon future camera improvements and performance updates, as long as they promise not to mess around with the battery anymore.
Will wait for June update with fingers crossed, and if battery goes back to April levels, will stop updating to newer firmwares after that. Probably till the next OS version upgrades have been released and matured enough to be stable.
I specifically bought S21Ultra fully intending to keep it for 3+ years.
It's not a question of money or hardware obsolescence (not a real issue these days) but I'm so anal about setting a phone the way I like it, that I can't bring myself to do it more often.
Took me more than 3 weeks of tinkering and I'm not even done yet.
Two to three years is my average, I normally wait until my contract is up (24 months) and then continue to use the phone I've got until something else takes my fancy.
But this is assuming I get my S21 Ultra back fixed properly. My son dropped it on Sunday, cracking the screen so it's with Vodafone for repair right now. I've been quoted £226 for repair, which I thought was reasonable given that I've not seen a genuine Samsung replacement screen for less than £290 and that's assuming I was prepared to replace it myself.
Hard to answer this question until new devices are offered. I have upgraded everytime Samsung released it's latest device since the S6 but skipped the S20 and happy I did as the S21 was much improved. We'll see what the future brings. For me personally I'm less likely to upgrade just because it's a new device. With today's pricing for top shelf smartphones it only makes sense to exercise prudence. I don't see switching to an Apple device, the value is tough to reconcile especially when one considers it's proprietary ecosystem requires a total realignment.
I will say this, as much as I like my S21 Ultra, I only really went back to Samsung after my Oneplus 6T because I was offered a ridiculous deal by Vodafone. Samsung devices annoy the hell out of me, despite the quality of the hardware and cameras. The idea of never being able to take a device back to absolute full stock, have it repaired without the warranty being void, and be able to use every feature it came with simply because you would like to root your phone is abhorrent to me. They can take their Knox trip and cram it up their ****. No other manufacturer permanently alters their devices at a hardware level as a result of the user rooting their phone. It's a disgrace.
So whilst I'm happy with my phone, I'm likely going to go for something else next.

Well yes I do mean the custom ROM. I am downloading it now and hoping to see better battery life as with the 1st June update it has been crappy.
Ideally, I would want to upgrade to a affordable, foldable phone with at least 120hz oled screen with great battery life, camera and is waterproof. I use my phone and tablet a lot, it would be great to combine the 2. When will this will happen? Probably never.
Edit........
I generally upgrade every year. I could ride this out much longer, just depends on what Google does with their next phone.

Each to their own of course, but the idea of spending upwards of £700-£800 a year for a mobile device that will have little improvement on your current device seems a bit odd to me. I've yet to see enough improvement over a 12 month period in the mobile phone sector to justify such an outlay. Two years just about justifies it, in my case going from a Oneplus 6T to an S21 Ultra for example. I wouldn't have gone from an S20 Ultra to an S21 Ultra.
Mobile phone manufacturers would love everyone to be like you.

just got the S21 Ultra, took me 5 years, was gifted an iPhone 7 plus in 2016 so decided to ride it out on the iOS bandwagon. My yearly phone budget is $250-$300 so if the phone costs $1200, it better last a minimum of 4 years.

It's the Cameraservice_worker partial wakelock that's tanking the battery while walking around with the phone. Supposedly, the "feature" aims to protect the camera while phone is being moved around by keeping the optically stabilised lens module from jostling around in the housing. As a side-effect, it's chewing up the battery much faster.
It's being discussed and investigated here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/cameraservice_worker-partial-wakelock.4234161/
