Note 9 has a lot of good things going for it . . . but a flagship?

Remember 2016? The Samsung A9 had a safe 5,000 mAh battery. Why can’t we put this in this note?
Feel free to add to this list of disappointments. Perhaps some of them will be fixed with the S 10?

Would a 5000mah battery in this years Note be a 'safe' marketing move? As a tech enthusiast I'd love to see it, however, I understand why they have played it safe, they need a couple of generations of solid performers without any hiccups before ramping back up. Imagine poor sales vs Note 7 repeat, they can't afford a repeat - I believe the Note would be a doomed product if it happened again.

It's swings and roundabouts, on one hand you could throw everything into your latest and greatest devices, but next year?
Note 9 makes a safe and just about interesting enough entry, it gives Samsung breathing room for next years model. Even the presentation had mention of how difficult it is to come up with new features.
Note 10 - 4500/5000mah battery, 5G, New GPS chip + 1 or 2 more features, makes more sense for a '10' iteration than the '9'.

Technically the Note 8 can support the 1GB speeds. The Note 9 will as well.

Personally I think the real challenge that Samsung Has is in the processor. Snapdragaon and Exynos have both seen decent improvments over the years but they don't hold a candle to what Apple has done with theirs. Not sure if they will ever win that battle, but I hope they can get closer.
I also believe that we are all going to be blown away by the S10 when it comes out. Samsung is putting ALL of the new HOT stuff they have been working on - INscreen Fingerprint scanner to name one - and I bet there will be bunch more!
I am getting the note 9, I just can't help myself - I am an addict when it comes to these devices - but I am really excited to see what is giong to happen when the S10 comes out.

You're getting too edgy with this. Pie was not relased during the development and 5g is still far away. Talking about the gps thing even my s7edge gets 4meter accuracy while driving what else do u need? An inch of accuracy!

The only things I wanted, and still hope come true . 1 )flat glass on the screen again, I mean it's a note right, easier to write on. 2) Alcantara case 3) dbrand grip case.
5g is way off, probably 2 generations before wide adoption. GPS has been great since Note 4 so not really seeing the need for that either.

Name one note that released with that years version of android.
Complaining about not being on the latest version of android (that was just released) while ignoring all the added samsung functionality is kind of a short sighted comparison..

I would definitely hire you as a customer service rep for Samsung! You have a plausible explanation for the concerns mentioned and your words are very well spoken. Thank you.
Couple of points to consider…
On the GPS chip: anybody who has walked the streets of Tokyo using any current smartphone GPS knows the frustration when you walk around the block three times because reflected GPS signals keep causing the blue dot to jump 100’s of meters when you think you are at your destination. It would be great to have the accuracy and reflected signal rejection Broadcom’s new chip promises.
On the “in glass fingerprint recognition“ that feature is dubious when a phone has facial recognition & a great back side fingerprint scanner... but it’s something new to hype.
And now my favorite… Larger batteries and the direction the industry has moved towards. Your explanation of Samsung being extremely cautious makes perfect sense and is a likely driver for their decision. That’s said, Samsung’s A9 realeased in 2016 with a 5,000 mah battery had no issues. Because it had a mid tier CPU it truly delivered 2 days of heavy use.
I probably should put this one in a separate thread but here’s the short version of what’s going on with battery capacities: phone makers match their battery mah capacity to approximately one day’s worth of power consumption. Why? Because when you charge your phone every day you’ll end up wearing the battery out within two years. In the “old days with replaceable batteries“ you could extend the life of your phone a few years by changing the battery. Now with sealed-in batteries you are virtually compelled to buy a new $800 electronic monitoring bracelet every two years. Pretty slick from a business perspective. Before someone jumps in and tells me you can’t have a water resistant phone with a removable battery, let me share my experience with phones in the Japanese domestic market. Japanese have had replaceable batteries in many of their water resistant cell phones since the 1990s. All it takes is a good o-ring and a decent latch. Today, however, Japan is “mostly” onboard with the lucrative (albeit wasteful) sealed-in battery scheme.

5g evolution is already in many cities like dfw. And the note 8 supports it. Full 5g won’t be here anytime in the next couple of years.

Another +1 for USEABLE flat glass....and for recognizing the curve as an artsy gimmick. Narrow 2mm bezels are fine. After all the flesh of one’s hand covers anywhere from 2 to 4 mm of bezel/screen anyway.

Guess I'm the only person that actually likes the curved screen. Function over form is what I always go for.

I feel exactly the opposite. The curve makes edge swipe gestures far more useful, and I have come to rely on them significantly.

Not alone! To be honest I just like the way the curved glass looks... I always found it gave the phone a more premium feel. Given the choice I would still take curved over flat edges, even though I don't even use the Edge features. Purely an aesthetic preference for me, but others of course may have different tastes and requirements.

Sometimes the screen protector situation bothers me but Im all for curved glass. Looks sexy

I like the curved glass screen because of edge display and the edge features. Yes it can be a but annoying with accidental touches but the trade off is worth it for me.
As far as the screen protector issue, that has nothing to do with Samsung. All those screen protector makers are being cheap and stupid. They make full coverage ones with only adhesive on the sides, and they also make case friendly ones with full adhesive. Why the heck can they not make a full coverage one with full adhesive?! Seems very stupid to me that they are having such a hard time making a dang protector that handles both things.

It's only a gimmick if you don't find a use for it. I can think of a lot of people that classifies the SPen as a gimmick. I use the heck out of mine, at least I thought I did until I met a guy that has to replace the tip of his SPen every month! He hooked me up with 3 bags of tips a few months ago after I got my Note 8. I haven't even replaced the tip yet for my original one.

I come to rely Alot on the apps edge since I started using the s7 edge. It helps me switch apps much faster than using the recent button. Well we can have apps That do the same thing but the curve makes it very smooth and natural to use

What does Android P have that Samsung's Oreo does not have more of?
What's the point of hurriedly introducing 5G when the tech is not yet mature. That would make the Note 9 a beta phone which I'm glad it's not.
I agree with the missing GPS chip.
I also agree with a 5kmAh battery
Overall I'm very happy with the Note 9 and consider it a big upgrade over the Note 8.

Disadvantages of the ONE PLUS 7 PRO. Convince me. My review. Convinced? :)

I was ready to jump ship from my note 9 and after a lot of thought felt I could regret it. Just my opinion but just wanted to list some of the short comings for people that are getting sucked into the hype of this new product that could help prevent buyers remorse. For others these things may not matter. But seeing that this broke 1000 dollar mark in Canada, im going to get a little more critical.

heavy
short battery life especially with 90Hz <-----another deal breaker.
Plastic components on the front pop up camera
19:9 aspect ratio cropping full screen videos more than 18:5:9

The purpose of this thread is not to present a one sided bashing of the 7 pro but to stir up conversation about it's pros and cons. The scale tips either way. After reading some replies, I felt pusuaded to re order it hence above.

I ended up ordering the nebula blue 256 gb but I agree with wht u said bruh. Missing some flagship strength.

The hardware to implement 5G is still too expensive and cumbersome to a cellphone's design. Unless you live in a major US city, you're probably not going to see 5G before it's ready to replace your phone anyways

Again, early technology with very low adoption rates thus far. 802.11ax requires more antennas, so more than likely also running into phone design problems

I've only seen 1 reviewer get as low as 4 hours of SOT. Everyone else seems to be getting 7-8 hours of SOT even with the 90Hz refresh rate

Heavier metal components would just put more wear on the motor. It'll be inside the phone 99% of the time, and it retracts if it detects the phone is in freefall, so I don't see a big issue with its durability

Legit complaint. I see the aspect ratio as benefiting readers more than movie watchers, so it's a personal preference.

Qi charging has invited bad practices to take hold. You get longer battery shelf life if you run down the battery before charging vs. it charging all the time, and everyone knows that people do with Qi charging. Heat is the enemy of any battery

Not a huge picture-taking guy, so I'll take your word for it

Well what can i say... Coming from samsung

It's extremely big - too big for me - and has a gross, Galaxy S7 style curved screen. Other than that, it's fine. No wireless charging and no IP rating are also bad, but less severe as far as issues go.

My only complaint is lack of SD card and weak battery life with 90hx. Still ordered ?

I don't know if I will buy it or not, but the major flaws for me are:
No AOD
No IP67 certification (not because of water, but because of dust - might be no problem but who knows)
Battery life (really fast at charging on the other hand, so not really important to me)
Camera right now is much worse than the P30 pro for the same price, might get better with gcam etc.
Well and all of these are better on the P30 pro. But that has the biggest of all flaws:
Locked Bootloader, no root, no bootloader unlock codes from Huawei.
A P30 pro with an SD855 and an unlocked bootloader would be perfect for me.

They've already made the 7 Pro 5G in cooperation with EE in UK (who expect to have rolled out the technology by the end of this year) and Elisa in Finland (who've already started setup of its 5G network but won't be available to customers until next year)
No word on pricing for the 7 Pro 5G, though.

For me this dumb of price, what a flagship killer.

1st.. 5G isn't even a thing yet and won't be for almost 2 years. The 5G they are pushing is a compression algorithm on top of 4G backbone. Unless you're planning to keep this phone more then 2 years, worrying about 5G is pointless. They are herding you like sheep.
2nd... IP Rating means nothing. If water damaged the phone they still don't fix it. I'd rather what OnePlus is doing and do their own waterproofing and save the money on the IP certification.
3rd... AOD. You know these are AMOLED panels right? They get burn in... No thanks personally. I turned it on on my OP6 ABUT I don't even use it. This is really just personal choice.
4th... Battery. Only 1 review I saw said 4 hours of SOT MKBHD but he had like 5 or 6 social media accounts going at once... Not a true indicator. I've seen more then a couple say they're getting 5-8 hours SOT. I'll wait to judge for myself but think it will be just fine.
And last... Wireless charging. Why does anyone care when it's slow as hell? Warp charging is so so fast wireless is really pointless, unless you have a damaged USB-C port
I'd rather save $300-$500 and have the screen, speed, storage, storage speed (UFS 3.0), the fastest charging then the IP Rating, wireless charging, 5G that you can't use right now

Holy hell, my phone just shipped. I placed the order at 10:03 this morning

For me there is not much that I miss. The headphone jack maybe but I use 95 % of the time bluetooth headphones already now. its big yes, 6 inches would be probably enough but I think I can live also with the current display. Qi charging maybe a bit, but just because I would like to try it because I never had a phone which was capable of it. But with the fast charge of oneplus it is a bit useless. I would rather leave my phone 20 plug to the fast charger than 1 hour on a pad

Actually its not. This could answer questions people may have about this new device in one nice summary. There has been confusion if it came with 5g and WiFi 6 since the snapdragon 855 is supposed to support it, for example.. This helps them make a more informed decision. That being said if I had to buy a phone today it would still be this one.

No it doesn't. It ALLOWS for more antennas (up to 8 instead of up to 4). Even the Intel AX200 adapter for laptops is still using just 2 which are tuned to the same bands that have been used in Wi-Fi since 802.11a and 802.11b. 802.11ax still supports single antenna even.

I got the 12/256gb :victory:

The biggest turn off for me is the curved screen, otherwise it's the best phone of the year so far. Tired of everyone copying Samsung and Apple design gimmicks. Give me top hardware, comfortable and straightforward design, no gimmicks.

Yeah there are two posts already talking about all the whining about battery drain and wireless charging.
paying less for a good quality phone is a big plus

Note 9 users, will you be getting the Note 10+?

Every year there is the debate of whether to upgrade or not. On the positives, you'll get a bigger screen, faster processor, 4-6 GB more RAM, more camera options, slightly bigger battery and sleeker design. However, you'd be giving up the headphone jack, have to deal with the punch hole camera, and potentially having more accidental screen presses with the all screen design.
Given the aggressive discounts, it still might be worth it for some. Will you be upgrading?

Yea, preordered it. 600 in trade 250 in Samsung dollars plus cashed in rewards. Looking at 260 shipped to my door. I can easily sell it for more than my note 9 unlocked.

To many features of the 9 were dropped like the heart rate sensor that I use daily so for me the 10+ would be a major downgrade from my note9 512gb.
Plus the hole punch would drive me nuts.

No. It's literally a S10+ with a stylus and removed a feature. The headphone jack.

If there was a trade-in option like in the USA then I would consider, but in Sweden there are no good incentives and it's quite expensive for such a small upgrade. Maybe later if they will have some good deals for Blackfriday or christmas.

The hole in the screen is a deal breaker for me. I'm keeping my Note 9.

The same by me,keep the Note 9,maybe there are good customroms in the future,but not before update to Android 10.......at the moment i dont see a reason to change anything;the Note 9 is running nearly perfect....love it!

Most does not mention it nor care, but the iris scanner is also no more.

Not enough for me to upgrade, the freaking punch hole and the lack of a headphone jack and the heart rate sensor I used to upgrade my devices almost every year or year and a half, smartphones tech has evolved so much that I can't really see the need to upgrade so often..

Today, I had a chance to check out the Note 10 and Plus models at Best Buy. After checking it out for about 15 minutes, it felt like a purely cosmetic upgrade. Yes, it looks more sleek than the Note 9, especially in the Aura Blue color, but the reality is it ends up in a case anyways which adds bulk to the bezels. The hole punch was nearly invisible using night mode. The power button on the left is where one's index finger rests, so that change likely won't be an issue. Once the wow factor of the huge screen wore off, you realize that Samsung is basically using the same formula as the Note 9 and S10 series. Sure, it's a bit faster with the SD 855, EFS 3.0, and 12 GB RAM, but do they make a real world difference? Not really. I have a OnePlus 7 Pro as well, and the 90 Hz display combined with smoother software experience give the Note 10+ serious competition.
With 5G so sparsely available and carriers still figuring out what bands to use, I'd say the 5G model is premature. Even when 5G gains steam in 2020/2021, it's likely that the X50 modem will pale in comparison to the performance and versatility of upcoming 5G modems. As for the smaller Note 10, I can see it being popular with those coming from an S7 or S8. It is very comfortable to hold and offers good specs, though it will need to come down in price to compete with the S10/S10+.
The best summary of the situation mentioned is that the Note 9 was a phone that offered everything with no compromises. The Note 10+ offers extreme specs and gimmicky features, but gives up basics that Note 8 and Note 9 users appreciated. It is a very good looking phone with great performance, but not worth paying such a hefty price after one year with the expensive Note 9. Don't be shocked if this is deeply discounted for the holidays.

No headphone jack for a $100 more and not even a damn dongle or a 45 w charger in the box. Never paying more for less. Samsung is going the direction of apple's after mocking them for years for the same things they're doing right now. They've even removed their mocking videos from everywhere. Now, even the price is the same. Claiming that they removed the headphone jack to have space for the spen and a bigger battery. Turned out the bigger battery is only 300 mAh extra and the pen is the same size as ever. Asus managed to put a 5000 mAh battery in a phone WITH a headphone jack and two USB-C ports. Samsung is starting to cut corners to save some money on production and make more of it on sales since the phone market is basically saturated. They're freaking out because they're not selling as many phones as they used to. If they keep going on this direction, this note 9 will be the last phone I get from them even though this has been my decision even before the note 10, but now I won't even consider them.

Well for those that can afford to pay full price for a device then trade said device in I'm sure getting the 10 is a good deal. It would end up costing what a decent mid range device cost. But for most of us we are on contract..lol. For me I could care less about on screen finger print. Some will say well I don't have to pick up phone to unlock it now. Have we become so lazy that picking up your phone is that hard. For me and this is just me, I don't think the 10 is much of an upgrade. Yeah I have 2 upgrades just sitting and waiting to be used at At&t but I don't think I will waste them on the 10 when the 9 is great..sucky camera but still a power house. Don't care about the gimmicky pen gestures I'm not a blogger and most average user will not use it. I'm a simple man will never have to convert my off screen notes to word documents, what I have to say isn't that important [emoji1787]. But to each person it may be seen different. But for me it's not an upgrade. The 10 to me is a midrange device, the 10 plus is beautiful but it's just not enough to justify the price.

Yes this is great phone i already using it great company

So far I have to say this phone is on its way to becoming the New GOAT. Build quality is stellar, i don't mind the camera bump, small sacrifice for a better shooter. Plus I always rest my finger against it. But that being said, it's pretty much the perfect phone IMO.
The display, the smoothness, the cameras. If I can get 6h + SOT on top of that it'll definitely become my GOAT Samsung phone. Dethroning the Note 7 who dethroned the Galaxy S4 Google play edition but I digress.
I don't see myself moving to another phone any time soon.

Initial thoughts after final setup:
Going from a A20 ultra to a Note 20 ultra, I think this phone just looks and might even perform better. The feel in the hand, the fingerprint reader, everything seems to run smoother. I'm loving it so far.
My main concern is the battery life with heavy use. I've tweaked the settings a bit, so I guess I will have a better idea after a few days of use. But so far so good! :good:

I just received and configured my Note 20 Ultra. It's so similiar to Note 10+ but faster. Software looks almost the same. I already have 1 software update with security patch from 1st of August
edit: what is annoying is that pen is from the other side it's inconviniet if you are using right hand to operate and hold your phon in your left hand

It's an incredible phone. So much smaller than my first mobile phone 35 years ago. How far we have come since Palm first put a PDA and mobile into the same unit. Luv, Luv, Luv.
PS. The Beans are wonderful. So nice to not have a bud sticking into my ear canal.
PPS. Now I have to wait all over again for my Tab S7+.

Lol, I remember those. My first phone was a brick phone with a battery that lasted an hour if you were lucky, and a hand calculator sized screen. Times have changed indeed. It's amazing.

I have waited on the Note series for a while. What finally took my commitment was finding out the s pen is on the left. As a lefty, this is the most convenient placement I can imagine.
Anticipate that the placement will change back to the right in the next iteration after feedback from rightys.

If the s-pen was on the right, it would be perfect. Fingerprint scanner is brilliant now, screen is unreal, battery life is phenomenal, speed is beyond belief... Perfection. Good luck topping this, Samsung

Love this phone! It's definitely my favorite phone ever. It just barely beats my love for the OnePlus 8 Pro. I like the form factor of this phone better with less display curves. Plus all the tons of software features. However the colors and brightness on the OnePlus 8 Pro are better.

Can you elaborate further on the brightness? Everything I've read says the Note 20 Ultra has a brighter screen than the OnePlus 8 Pro, and the rated nits value is quite a bit higher. It might only go up to highest brightness in adaptive mode and being outside? IDK, but you're the first person I've seen say this.

This is the best way I have of describing my N20U screen brightness.
On a no cloud sunny day, I can take my phone out and see the screen perfectly. No more having to turn to use my body for shade and my hand to see the screen.
I am 69 with mild Adult onset Macular Degeneration. This phone is fantastic for me with auto brightness enabled.

Couldn't agree more. After owning note 2,3,4,7,8, and 9 with the pen on the right it will take some getting used to.
Battery life is also a bit meh coming from a Poco F2 Pro but it's good enough to get me to the end of the day so I can live with it.
Apart from those two factors I love this thing. Even at 60hz the screen is very bright and vibrant. It's very responsive, plenty quick enough for day to day tasks, and I've got the inferior Exynos model since that's all my country gets.
Camera is also beast. Low light isn't quite as good as my P30 Pro but it's still pretty impressive compared to a lot of smart phones out there. One thing it does have over the p30 is that it's much faster to grab focus so much better for quick snaps.

I've had Note 1, Note 3, S7, S10+ and now N20U from HK with Snapdragon. I've only had it two days, but I'm very happy with the phone. Big £ savings vs UK Exynos are icing and a cherry on top of the cake.

Having pre ordered the phone and having used Notes 3,4,7, 8 and now the 20 Utra 5G with 512gb internal storage; I wanted to wait to make a judgement call but I can say while there are things I like about the phone, I don't think it is what I expected and I am done with Samsung products.
I mean they have tried un-successfully to get rid of the micro sd card slot so then they go after the head phone jack. They skimp on the 120Hz display at full resolution. I mean there are a number of things for a flag ship $1549 phone that just say crap. I was interested in a watch and a tab s7 also. but that isn't going to happen.

I've owned a number of Samsung devices in the past, including Notes 8 and 9 as well as an S10e provided by my company. The Note 9 is, to me, an icon and the last no holds barred, everything but the kitchen sink, no compromises, Note. I do a lot of mobile photography and have always gravitated toward devices that had impressive camera/audio/video capabilities as well as feature-filled in other areas. I wanted to get my hands on the Note 20 Ultra but wasn't willing to relinquish my still pristine Note 9 for the pre-order trade in discount. So I waited for the software problems to get sorted out and the prices to come down. I regularly scanned the Offer Up and Swappa websites until I was able to a factory unlocked 512GB model from a good seller at a great price. This device is a juggernaut of power, form, function, features and fun. I found it not to be too much larger than my Note 9 which fits oh so nicely in hand in its Caseoloy Paraxell case. The camera and video set up is a mobile photographer's dream. I've utilized Google Pixel software apks (GCam) on all of my devices going back to my LG V20 and the stock cameras work so well that I have found no need to port one this time out. This is just overall a top notch piece of tech that does so many things and does them well. It is a quality, powerful, feature-filled piece of technology that will fulfill your needs, whether it's mobile photography, work productivity or content consumption/creation and everything in between. I'm glad I added it to my lineup.

Hardware is great ! With a few greed related exceptions, ( Like Non-Removable Battery, No Audio Port,etc... ) Scamsung's Locked Bluetooth codec really burns my ars !
It could Do/Be so much more/better if they would just fix the Hardware/Firmware lockdown BS.
Coming from a Rooted Note3, this is a really bad experience trying to do anything with this thing, Nothing works without agreeing to some sort of sketchy user agreement. No one is making any usable apps any more, Most of the Best Developers have quit bothering with Android. Even simple widgets don't even work anymore
I DO NOT OWN this over priced phone, They Do ! And they do/steal what ever they want to/from it !
They forced Assdroid 11 in the middle of the night with a corrupt image, I was forced to send it back to them to get it re-flashed. Now None of the apps I was using on version 10 will work on ver. 11.
I will NEVER buy another assdroid, scamsung again. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone either.
Sad that almost all the hardware/software makers are using these creepy/greedy tactics to spy,steal & dictate what you should do. No other choices out there any more ...

QC seems to suck. It may have happened during assembly. It may settle to a less irritating position over time. A lot of firmware issues it seems on those phones too.
In the last year Samsung products have been below par as well. One of the reasons I'm buying another new Note 10+ Snapdragon variant; very little issues across the board with these gorgeous work horses. My current 10+ will be 2 yo soon, one replacement battery so far on this heavily used device. It looks and runs like new.
Lol, not holding my breath for next year with Samsung. It's sad but sometimes the newest isn't the best choice.

Examine the 10+ at a great price.
Up to 1tb of v30 storage... no Apple can match that or the cool bt spen shutter release. That and smart select are my favorite spen features.
