Hello,so i have been trying tnsuccessfully to add custom ringtones to my contacts on my Samsung S20 FE. I have removed most stock Samsung apps that come installed on the phone and i replaced them with the Google apps. So i have Google contacts installed instead of the Samsung contacts app. When i try to set a ringtone to a certain contact,i am not given any option to add anything beside the factory tones installed on the phone.
There is no option to add a music file at all. Does anyone know how i can work around this to set specific ringtones for each of my contacts please? I am at a loss now and dont know how to get this sorted. My phone is not rooted at all so please can someone help me sort this?
U have to make in Internal storage a Ringtones folder and put there whatever tunes u like. Than u should be able to customize your contacts ringtones with these tunes.

Hi @ToothFairy' i actually did do that already and still i am unable to select anything other than the Samsung pre-installed tones when wanting to add to a contact
Install a file explorer (like ES File Explorer or Solid Explorer) and, after taping Set ringtone (first upper right 3dots on contact in question), choose that file explorer and, with it, the tune u desire.

Gave it a try,unfortunately still no luck. It does'nt give an option to use a file manager. Seems like the Samsung default settings are somehow preventing the Google Contacts app from allowing custom ringtones at all.
That's strange!!! It's working for me! Either with one of those two file explorers mentioned before.
Before choosing ringtone, have you tried to open that new fresh installed file explorer and "play" with it? It needs permissions to read/write on system and/or sd card. Can you see, in file explorer, the folder created i.e. "Ringtones"?
Which file manager are you using? I have file manager + installed and still nothing as you can see in the screenshots ive added
@ToothFairy' it seems i managed to find a way to get it working in the end. So what i had to do was select each ringtone first as the ringtone for my phone. That then adds the tones to the list and then when i go to the Google Contacts app and tap on ringtone,the ringtone i want to add for that person is there already and it allows me then to add it.

On attached screenshots i used Solid Explorer.
1. tap on right 3 dots and choose Set ringtone
2. tap on opened options (in my case i used Solid Explorer)
3. select Ringtones folder that you made on Main storage or SD Card
4. choose the desired ringtone.
It's the same with ES File Explorer.

Thanks for all yottr help,i appreciate it. Now its on to my next dilemma. Figuring which system and bloat apps i can get removed with ADB. Done the basics like phone,contacts,messages etc already and replaced with the Google apps. Stuff like Bixby etc that i dont use,i want to get off too. Just not sure which i can and cant

Sorry, don't get me wrong, but I think it's a waste of time and, besides that, it looks like u're not so much of a tech savy and, for that reason, u might brick your phone or whatever.
This goes for that Samsung apps replaced with ones from Google, too! Why did you do that? What have u earned by doing this?
It tooked 3 damn days to figure it out how to assign a ringtone to a contact!
Sure, I disabled some of the apps that I know I'll never use. But from this to using adb and messing with my phone without knowing what I'm doing it's a long road.
Again, don't take it personally but I just don't understand.

There are two ways you can convert a user app to system:The NOOB way and the XDA way!
Noob wayownload titanium backup pro,long press an app,go to special functions and click move to system app Or download system app mover.

Important: Make sure to allow any SuperUser permission requests that you may get during these steps..
Procedure
Configuring ES File Explorer for root read/write access (required only once):
Launch ES File Explorer, press Menu and tap ‘Settings’.
In the settings, enable the ‘Up to root’ check box.
Further down in the settings, enable ‘Root Explorer’ check box. You will get a warning that you should confirm.
You will then get the Superuser permissions request that you must allow.
Finally, enable the ‘Mount File System’ check box, and press the back key to get back to the explorer interface. ES File Explorer is now configured to work as a root explorer. You do not need to do this again on the same device now, unless you uninstall ES File Explorer, perform a factory reset or install another ROM.
Finding the APK of an already-installed normal app (skip to step 3 if you already have the APK):
First of all, install the app from Play Store, if you haven’t already done that.
Launch ES File Explorer and go to /data/app. (You may have to press the back button to get to / first).
If you know the icon of the app, you can easily find it here. If you are having trouble finding the app here due to the confusing names or because of having a lot of apps installed, just search for the app in Google Play Store in a web browser and look at its Play Store link for the name. The file name will basically be the part after ?id= in its market link (and before any other question mark that may or may not appear in the link).
If you already have the APK of the file that you want to install as a system app, make sure you have transferred it to your device’s SD card if you haven’t done that already. Also make sure you know the path where you have copied it on the SD card.
Once you have located the required APK on the SD card from ES File Explorer, tap-and-hold on its icon till you get a menu, and tap ‘Cut’. You should see a little blue arrow on the bottom of the screen now. (You may select ‘Copy’ instead of ‘Cut’ if you are copying a file over from the SD card and want to keep a copy there. In case of copying an APK from /data/app, always use ‘Cut’.)ES File Explorer Copying
Now press the back button till you reach / and then browse to /system/app/
Tap the little arrow that you see on the bottom of the screen. It will bring up a pane with the icon of the copied file.
Tap on the file’s icon, and it will be transferred to /system/app/.
Now find the app’s icon in the list of files there and tap-and-hold on it till you get the menu.
Scroll down in the menu till you see ‘Properties’ and tap on it. You will now see the properties dialog.
Tap the ‘Change’ button in front of the Permissions to bring up the permissions dialog.
Make sure everything under ‘Read’ is checked, only ‘User’ is checked under ‘Write’ and nothing is checked under ‘Execute’ Your screen should look like the following:ES File Explorer Permissions
Tap OK on this screen and then on the Properties screen. Your app’s permissions are now set correctly.
Reboot your device. Your app is now ready to be used as a system app.(optional)

Just buy a WP7 phone.
Oh wait, no need to buy. just moaning to them about your android or ios phone and they will give you free one.
There are many apps in the market that will change the look to WP7. Start with a metro UI launcher.

The best metro style launcher is Launcher 7, it has a great customizatoin capablities, and even came with some live tiles.(email,contacts, calendar, gallery, widget tile). even more you can customize tiles.
here you can find the launcher and many nice alternative png for tiles.
also if you are on a CM9/10 or AOKP ROM you can find some winphone7 themes too. I can't find the link right now, but sure you can find it in XDA. just search for wp7 theme.
and you can find a nice messagind app, name Messaging 7. and a status bar replacement named statusbar+
if WP7 has only a single perfect point it is the launcher. It's about a month that I'm using Launcher 7, and surprisingly I found it even easier to use than usual android launchers.
p.s the launcher 7 is designed by an independent developer so it has some bugs. for example contacts live tile drains the battery at unbeliveable speed. ignore that live and use a static one.

Hello XDA,
I am running on ARHD 5.1, rooted, on the ONE. Using ES file explorer to navigate.
My issues are these:
1) Setting a custom ringtone,
File is located at: sdcard > Ringtones > file.mp3
The file is all lowercase, no spaces.
When I go to Settings > Sound > Ringtone >
The file does not show up, but it does when I press the + icon in the top right.
After choosing this, I get an error message : "Unfortunately, Sound set has stopped".
I've tested out the ringtone (by calling it) and the default is still selected. I will continue to get that error message until I move the mp3 file to a different location. I have also used this ringtone on my SNS, and have played the file on MUSIC, so it isn't corrupted .
2) Setting a custom Notification,
File is located at: sdcard > media > audio > notifications >
The file is all lowercase, no spaces, mp3
When I go to Messaging > menu (3dot) > settings > notifications > Notification Sound >
The file does not show up.
I've also tried moving the file to:
sdcard >Notifcations
sdcard >Ringtones
But nothing works.
Has anyone encountered this issues? My last phone was quite different so I can't pin down the location for the issues (Phone, OS, ROM...)
Get zedge from the play Store it's will put the tones on for you lot easier that's what I done

Hmm, I tried that out, but I wasn't able to use my one custom files. It seemed as though I had to DL their songs.
But, there should be an easy way to do this w/o any need for apps, shouldn't it?
It should be but I've not tried I've always used zedge i find it the easiest way for me
Unfortunately, there is definitely a problem with the Ringtone/Notification system on the HTC One... at least on the Developer Edition. I can't speak for any of the other flavors.
Placing Ringtones into the normal locations including the following:
/sdcard/ringtones
/sdcard/notifications
/sdcard/media/ringtones
/sdcard/media/notifications
Does not make those files appear in the lists for the standard ringtone/notification sound chooser.
You CAN select those files if you use a third-party ringtone/notification selection app (like ES File Explorer) but there are two problems with this:
1) System Apps (like the stock SMS messaging app) will not give you the option to use a third party ringtone chooser.
2) Other applications WILL let you use a third party chooser (like Gmail and Google Voice) but if you DO use a separate app to choose a ringtone/notification, you will break the built-in notification chooser. That means that every time you try to change a ringtone or notification sounds in a system app, you'll get a force-close message. The only way to fix it is to delete the ringtone file that you selected with the third party chooser.
Hopefully HTC resolves this quickly. While I don't HATE the stock sounds, I have grown accustomed to a specific set of sounds for various accounts and services and would prefer not having to change my routine, so-to-speak.
After various tweaks and tests I've finally fix it.
I can't say with certainty, but it seems as though the files work when I dl'd them on my PC then pushed them to my phone.
For the ringtone, I set it through ES and it rings accordingly.
For the SMS tone, the sound file showed up after a reset.
So, the files are finally working and I am thinking it has something to do with downloading them straight to the phone vs pc. Odd, but it ended up working.
In the past on my sensation/hox/hox + I have always put my custom ringtones/notifications in system/media which is the proper place for them then I have to reboot the device before they become visible.
On this device I did the same and, after reboot, my entries had completely disappeared wtf

1) The correct locations for storing custom ringtones and notifications are:
/sdcard/Ringtones
/sdcard/Notifications
2) You must copy the files to this location from your computer via USB. The problem I was encountering was caused by the fact that I was using ES File Explorer to download my MP3 and OGG files from a network share to my phone. While all other applications were able to see and play these files without any trouble, the built-in ringtone/notification chooser will not see files copied onto the device in that way.

I've been having the same exact frustration. I posted my question in the AT&T One forums (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2247626) and referenced your thread. I thought this was [CLOSED] -- I came here to get your ID to PM you and saw your update (about having to get the files onto the phone via USB). I'm going to try this as soon as I'm able!

Copying the files via USB absolutely works :good:.
I turned off USB debugging (in Developer Options) and connected. The phone's "internal storage" appeared under "My Computer" as "HTC One", not as a drive letter, with the "root" being /sdcard (btw I'm running Win 7 Ultimate). I also got a new drive letter for "HTC Sync Manager", showing as a CD drive (with a letter), but that's irrelevant to this.
I just copied files into /Alarms, /Notifications, and /Ringtones using Windows' GUI (both by dragging and Ctrl-C/V). My files were a mix of audio formats and subtypes and I was prompted to convert several of them during the operation, with the warning that "...otherwise [the files] might not play correctly" or something. I let it convert a few just to see what happens -- they get converted to wma -- but the phone had no trouble playing back the unconverted files, either. Indeed, the One was able to use some files that my previous phone could not.
I'm going to link to this post from my own question in the other forum. +1 to you, sir.

Nice discovery, hopefully some HTC dev will pick up on this.
A zip containing computerized system voices for android devices. For anyone interested in the idea or for those bored with the default sound schemes.
I know there may be more out there similar to this but I decided to create computerized system voices for android devices. Technically these can be used with just about anything but they were created for the Android specifically. The XT-861 to be exact. Some of the quotes are specific to the device, but most are general system quotes. This is the female set. I am making a male set as well. I will upload when I'm done. If anyone would like to comment or request anything specific don't hesitate to ask. Also, if there are others sets like this, apps, etc. Feel free to post them and share. Enjoy everyone!! Feel free to download share, reup, etc. Just give me credit..
Install Notes:
Some android phone system sounds are in .OGG format others in .MP3
This set contains both formats..
For The XT-861 XT-860 XT-862 devices:
Use Root Explorer or whatever root file and folder browser you prefer.
Navigate to Root/System/Media/Audio
There you'll find multiple folders such as UI, Ringtones, EFI, Notifications, etc.
Navigate to either folder that contains the system sound you would like to replace.
I suggest renaming the default files by simply adding .bu (backup) at the end of the file. Afterward, add the new sound and rename it to match the original (without the .bu of course).
For all other sounds you can use an app called "Light Flow" or any similar alternative. That'll give you much more control over individual sounds.

Wow that was pretty fast!
Yes, I'm sure the Galaxy media folder is in the same location, some folders may be named differently but this is usually where the system sound folders reside. Just navigate to System/Media/Audio and the folders should reside there. Copy files, rename them accordingly with any root explorer then Reboot. You may have to set permissions to match the original files as well before reboot. It should be rw-r-r.
As far as Light Flow is concerned, I don't see why it wouldn't work on the Galaxy. What sounds lightflow can control depends on your device and what apps you have installed.

System sounds are found on the SD card and the internal System/Media folder as well. If you have a folder on your SD card, built in or external, labeled "Notifications" or "Ringtones" etc. the android system will recognize them and the files within them will be added to your list when changing ringtones or notification sounds the standard way. As long as they are the correct format of course. So depending on which sounds you intend to use, they should be able to be placed there. Also, some apps have the option to assign a unique ringer or notification sound for that app only within the apps settings. Basically Between the System folder, the SD card folders, Light Flow, Individual app settings and the default sound options in Android you should be able to swap out any and every sound you can hear if you want.
Two issues with my new Note 5.
1. When I copied my mp3 ringtone file to storage/sdcard0/ringtone it worked for one day, then failed. Tried to convert to wma, ogg, mp3, the program said, "unable to set as ringtone"
2. I copied the photos from the old phone to storage/sdcard0/dcim, but the new gallery can't find them. Any solution on this?
3. Actually mp3 files disappeared too.
5.1.1 no longer have the option to select where to store your photos, any work around, or should i use third camera and gallery app?

If you simply use a file exploer and go to Storage/DCIM you will have your photos in the correct place.
If you are using an apk like Root Explorer just go to SDCard/DCIM - (there is no SDCard0 that I know of. (unless you are trying to create a new folder there) Just put the new folder directly in SDCard directory and you should not have any issues. I have lots of personal photos and special ringtones I copied to the phone adn they all work fine. By the way, when I transfer audio files to any of my phones, it always asks me if I want to convert the file to a diffeent format - says if I don't it may not play correctly - I never do that - and they always work fine.

thanks Mocsab. Unfortunately, i tried, been using andriod phones for 4 years, this is the only time i felt this no longer an android product. The permission setting and other restriction make it an iOS duplicate.
Going back to my issues, it was still resolve.

I understand - I am not sure why are having the issues you described - they didn't happen for me - and personally, i think this is one of the best Android Phones I have ever used. Love it,
yeah, now that i have my data pretty much transferred, maybe i should do a full back up and reset to factory setting. Not able to change the ringtone i've using for 10 years really bother me.....
Ok, i did a factory reset and start from scratch. I was able to setup a custom ringtone by putting the file in the same ringtone directory, and copied the photos to the DCIM folder. It actually worked for 10 hours. 10 hours later, when i deleted a whatsapp images from the Gallery app, the entire photos collections as well as my ringtone were gone, ringtone back to default setting. I think this is a bug, if anyone experience this, please share your experience.

ok, read another forum and found a solution to change the ringtone file name to ring.mp3 and amusingly, the file show up on the list of ringtone and it works.
now the bug on why photos and music disappear still unsolved.

try to see if you have a .nomedia file on your storage card root directory.
what happen to my case was, i found a .nomedia in the storage card root "/sdcard/ .nomedia" so all medias were omitted.
Now that i have deleted the file, my mp3 player work correctly.
So I am trying to change my ringtone and notifications. First of all I don't want google Play music to find the music files when it is searching for files. Also I was wondering if there is a specific folder to place the files in. Because i normally just use a file explorer to choose it, but currently it is telling me its the wrong file type and its an mp3. I have the .nomedia file in the folder so that music apps wont load those files. I am wondering because by putting the files in the Ringtones folder they seem to load though the standard choosing method but all the other notifications dont seem to work that way if they are in the notification folder. Does it need to be media/Notifications?
I had the same question.. I found a YouTube video called setting custom notification sounds (just add /watch?v=q5K4zDbOJGo to the normal YouTube URL), and it explains how to do it.
Basically, you need a Media folder on your device, and a Notifications folder inside it. Once you've created them (if they don't exist) Just place your sound files in the Media/Notifications subfolder.
The Notifications folder can be right on the root, it does not have to be in the Media folder. That's where I copied my ringtones and notification sounds, and they show up as select-able now.
Using the "my files" app on the Sammy,
I copied whatever sounds i wanted to use from wherever they were direct to the notifications folder that's already in the device. I did not need to make any additional folders. T-Mobile variant.

I can see the mp3 but it keeps the standard ringtone.
For ringtones scroll to bottom of list, you will see add from phone, you can use the built in sound picker app or a compatible file explorer app then just navigate to relevant location
Edit: forgot to mention there's a size and length limitation, forgot exactly but something like under 1:30mins (maybe shorter) and 2mb if I recall

in note 8 the dir for custom notifications was changed from previously
internal-storage/media/notifications to internal-storage/notifications
just put any mp3 or other sound file to this dir and you will be able to find it in notification picker on any app

I could not find the sounds either.
I finally found the sound files for standard Notification sounds and Ringtones and downloaded them.
I also found the "UI" sounds and "Pen" sounds - but I cannot figure out where I should place these.
For notifications, I added "Notifications" Folder in "Internal Storage" and copied all the *.ogg files there.
I also copied all the stock ringtones in the :Ringtones folder (also under Internal Storage.
But I am not sure where to copy system UI sounds and Pen sounds.
Can anyone help?
I do not know how did I end up not having the notifications and stock ringtones..
When I setup my new Note 8 - I restored from Samsung backup my previous S8+ phone and this is what I think did the damage.
The only way to get back the file/folder structure would be to reset the phone to factory settings and not restore any backups - but this is a LOT of work as I have many apps and huge contacts database.
Any help on how to make a "refresh" without wiping all data would be greatly appreciated.

You won't be able to see the stock notifications, ringtones, & system UI without root. Some 3rd party file explorers may let you see them though. They are in system/media/audio.
If you create new folders in your storage & add stock sounds you may see duplicates in the list of sounds when you go to select them to assign them.
As for UI sounds & pen sounds, you can not change them them without root. And to change them you would have to replace the sound file with the one you want renamed with the same file name. I think there was an app that allowed you to change pen sounds for older Notes, not sure if it works on the Note 8 though.

I placed the download in "Internal storage" because I could not select any of these and I thought that I lost them.
I have troubles understanding the Android file system!
It is OK to protect, but at least we should be able to see what is there...

That I do not know, I use Root Explorer but I am rooted, not sure if it shows without root. Maybe try ES File Explorer? I have that on my Amazon Fire TV that is not rooted & I can see some system folders/files but not the data folder.

I copied notifications over to my phone and they weren't immediately available for selection. After a restart I was able to select the newly installed notifications.
Just adding this info for the benefit of anyone who is trying to install new ringtones. If you don't see them right away try restarting your phone.
Different ringtones for default and messages
I cannot get the default notification sound to be different from my message notification sounds. If I change the message notification sound it automatically Changes the default notification sound and vice versa. Can these be different sounds?
