Have come in xda many times for recovery imgs, tips and tricks. There are so many smart developers around here! Personally i'm not interested in this kinda learning, but sometimes I need a place for stock or modified Roms or simply some update on adb Shell and mods.

So almost everyone here is a Android guy or using it for a long time.
Let's get back to past.
So when you heard the name Android
And when you got an Android device ?
Share your story to us and have some fun with memories.
My story :
I don't actually remember when I heard the name for the first time but as I can remember I was using a Symbian phone and in a website I saw the name Android in app categories. Maybe it's 2011.
And my 1st Android phone was Samsung Galaxy Y young . My last Samsung as well
Star Wars
guess my 1st Android came as a Work Package almost 10yrs ago.
-Edit
I need to research the Nokia Ngage? I believe it is. 1st Gen Gaming Phone.
Yes, we had a version of NCAA Football for this Prototype.
It only showed Landscape?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N-Gage_(device)
At the same time that the Palm Pre came out.
2009ish
Whenever Google announced it I think. I remember thinking "Wow! Linux on my phone... supported by Google?? This is a dream come true."
Oh, how young and naive I was
As far as I remember, I first heard of Android with the release of the Samsung Galaxy S2, I myself started using Android in 2014.
A m8s of me went with meh to buy Nokia GSM
And when at store
m8s said that touchpad/touchscreen is 'NOW'
I wanted Nokia Asha GSM
So copped 'Smartphoni'
And when installed Parts of A ROM: AlienROM V5-V6
for my XPERIA E
I encountered ViPER4Android which did not work
because no r00t/busybox, and really wanted it because it felt interesting.
Now I have X Compact (Kugo)
I like SONY kind of phones, X-series
...
Anyways..
first time I heard about Android was when the woman from Vodafone tried to sell me my old HTC Magic back in 2009 together with a mobile data contract. I didn't think highly of mobilephones until then but Android really changed my view (especially because of the Linux internals)
2010(not sure of the month) when I got my first Android device, the HTC Hero.
The first time I watched a sci-fi movie as a kid, about 35 years ago. :good:
When my age was 14.

The first time I heard word Android was at school, the first Android device I biught, when I was a student.
Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy - A long time ago.
I hear about Android when Samsung launches Galaxy S2.
Radiohead
star trek in the late 90's
On my birth, may be.
It was like 2009, I used to be a "modder" on old Nokia (BB5, S40 and related) and Old Sony Ericsson (DB2020, Db3150) and when my last phone dead I started to see in many forums a lot of screen shots and post talking about android, so I became a Android lover
2010 I think, heard it with GPS technologic.
1976 in the movies. I was 9 years old.

Hi,
I spent many happy hours on this forum but I've been away from it for years. Today I charged up and took another look at my 2011 HP-Touchpad (a lucky firesale customer). Here's the spec page:
Android version: 4.1.2
Kernel version: 2.6.35-palm-tenderloin
CPU: ARMv7 Processor rev 2 (v7i)
CyanogenMod version: 10-20130304-EXPERIMENTAL
-tenderloin-FOR_LIMITED_TESTING_ONLY_CAM
Build date: Sun Mar 3 18:10:18 CST 2013
Also, I am rooted and want to remain so.
I'd like to get back into updating and am looking for help or links to help me do this.
Anyone have any ideas. Also, does anyone remember me? Thanks
Paul

Boy you have some catching up to do for sure.
I would if I were you start off by reviewing RolandDeschain79's tut's and go-by's. some of the very best IMO.
Take a glance just about your post here, Roland's How-To's are stickied.
Then the first thing you'll need is jcsullins TP Toolbox.
Prepare to Scorch Earth the tablet and then you'll need to decide which rom to go with. I removed WebOS from all of mine.
In my collection of tablets, my two daily drivers are still running Milaq's KK rom, on another I've got Milaq's Lineage11 running, then on one I've got Evervolv 6.x running, on another EV's 7.1.x. I haven't jumped on 8.x yet.
I like to think that I've gotten some good value and bang for my buck from these. They've held up very well compared to some of the other devices that I have gathering dust in a drawer.
Just wish there was a hack to add some more RAM to them...

Thanks Dan!
So you were able to get more than 1 HP-Touchpad? I was working for B&N at the time so I was in on the firesale info from the start and got the 32GB model. You are right about needing even more mem than that. I'm assuming you know about the moving to SDCard option? If not let me know for help. I did not have a workable playstore app so i reloaded the gapps for my OS and solved that prob. I tried loading some apps and had the insufficient (funds) memory error so that's when I relearned the move to SDCard trick. I STILL can't install the Root Explorer app tho - says something about incompatibility. It says it is paid for and I used to use this when I last had the TP running. Any ideas? I can still get at my files using a USB connection tho. BTW, I hate Windows so I've been a Linux lover for many years, incidentally I just turned 80 May 27th. Once I settle in (been away for a coupla weeks) I will revisit my old friends' Sullens & Deschains posts. Thanks for this pointer. Babbling now so I will shoot this along. Again, thanks. BTW I didn't get an email reminder about your post and I check my mail several times daily - I will look into my settings here.

I put in an incorrect email address so I fixed it.... tests OK now.
The first one I had I received from a friend who had bought it along with a desktop PC during the fire sale.
Her daughter didn't want it cause it wasn't an iPad.
System board failed after several years so I bought a busted up one off of eBay and swapped out the parts.
Other three were also purchased off of eBay. 'Bricked', 'Won't Power Up', 'FOr Parts or Repair' type of listings. cheap-cheap.
Fourth was a friend's which they'd left on the tombstone too long and the battery expanded, cracked the case up.
I started the game rooting my G1. You know like the first Android phone and it had a physical keyboard. Promptly installing Cyanogen MOD and keeping the phone updated well past its prime. I have used ODIN and flashed boot.img, installed custom roms and then the g-suite afterward because it couldn't be included.
That being said the last phone I rooted was a Sony back in 2015.
I just got a Pixel 2 and was happy not rooting.
Had an iPhone 12 pro for a while but promptly lost it. I can't remember passwords for ****. What a waste.
Now I have a silly little Samsung Galaxy A01 (SM-S111DL). TracFone. Don't really have access to a computer. I found the rooting thread but it is for the ATT model. I am a little weary flashing the software provided in the thread because it says for that model only.
Just because I have rooted in the past doesn't mean I am up on the latest methods.
I will keep reading the forums and lurking wisely.
BTW I am 41 years old with a degree in Computer Science but never held a job past Technial Support for Nest Learning Thermostat.
Well I dabbled in consult work with developers looking to access the API for a credit card processing gateway. We worked with SmartBear and mainly ingenico card readers.
Currently unemployed.
Also, I dabble with Ubuntu Linux, which I feel is mainly Russian software, a bit of a conspiracy theorist.
Loved the Android SDK back in the day. I used to spin up one or two instances of a particular phone. Thought I would actually develop an app one day. Didn't quite pan out, kind of past my prime in the technology department.
Any way, print "Hello, World" and all that.

Glad to have an old timer!
Welcome officially
Hey y'all, and thank y'all for welcoming me. I'm Philip, a 52 yr old tinkerer. I've been reading post and using help guides from XDA for yrs, just never signed up. The info on here is top of the line and more trustworthy than anywhere else. I bricked my girlfriends Galaxy tab and a couple other devices some yrs back and just recently recovered the tab with help from y'all and a laptop from my neighbor. I admit I like the easy way out and diligently to get some of this done via ota files but I had it done in no time with the laptop and Samsung Kies. She currently has a new scepter 8 qlink tab which is the worst performing device I ever touched and I've been reading some discussions on here about maybe rooting it and flashing an update or custom ROM. Aside from the scepter 8 we have C5_Stratus Elite from True Connect that operates fairly decent but either the phone or android 11 won allow display over other apps even if you enable it in developer mode. I think I read somewhere that flashing to android 12 might fix it. It's not a super big deal but I have a few apps that require it but not allowed due to low end hardware. Anyway that's my story for now. Y'all have a good day.
Hi everyone, I am a 42 yr old about to start up a ecommerce business selling ebikes, ebikes conversion kits, ebike accessories, and e Mopeds. I am a novice in the world of smartphone modification. But I have done almost everything that a novice can do. Trying to learn more.
Hi, i'm a 57 years old german. Born in the former GDR (East-Germany). Got degree in informatics by GDR, worked as a programmer on ESER a IBM 360/370 clone, later i was going the way from i8088 up to todays cpus. I'm a programer ( C,C++, Pascal, PL/1, but also assembler ), Got Novell Master-CNE twice, CNE up to 5.x, Microsoft MCSE etc. up to 2008, some Linux certs. Not really interesting in modification of smartphones. A log time ago i bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, changed to a custom rom later because apps are requesting Android 6 or later, but Samsung doesn't update beyond 5.0.
