So almost everyone here is a Android guy or using it for a long time.
Let's get back to past.
So when you heard the name Android
And when you got an Android device ?
Share your story to us and have some fun with memories.
My story :
I don't actually remember when I heard the name for the first time but as I can remember I was using a Symbian phone and in a website I saw the name Android in app categories. Maybe it's 2011.
And my 1st Android phone was Samsung Galaxy Y young . My last Samsung as well
Star Wars
guess my 1st Android came as a Work Package almost 10yrs ago.
-Edit
I need to research the Nokia Ngage? I believe it is. 1st Gen Gaming Phone.
Yes, we had a version of NCAA Football for this Prototype.
It only showed Landscape?

At the same time that the Palm Pre came out.
2009ish
Whenever Google announced it I think. I remember thinking "Wow! Linux on my phone... supported by Google?? This is a dream come true."
Oh, how young and naive I was
As far as I remember, I first heard of Android with the release of the Samsung Galaxy S2, I myself started using Android in 2014.
A m8s of me went with meh to buy Nokia GSM
And when at store
m8s said that touchpad/touchscreen is 'NOW'
I wanted Nokia Asha GSM
So copped 'Smartphoni'
And when installed Parts of A ROM: AlienROM V5-V6
for my XPERIA E
I encountered ViPER4Android which did not work
because no r00t/busybox, and really wanted it because it felt interesting.
Now I have X Compact (Kugo)
I like SONY kind of phones, X-series
...
Anyways..
first time I heard about Android was when the woman from Vodafone tried to sell me my old HTC Magic back in 2009 together with a mobile data contract. I didn't think highly of mobilephones until then but Android really changed my view (especially because of the Linux internals)
2010(not sure of the month) when I got my first Android device, the HTC Hero.
The first time I watched a sci-fi movie as a kid, about 35 years ago. :good:
When my age was 14.

It was like 2009, I used to be a "modder" on old Nokia (BB5, S40 and related) and Old Sony Ericsson (DB2020, Db3150) and when my last phone dead I started to see in many forums a lot of screen shots and post talking about android, so I became a Android lover
2010 I think, heard it with GPS technologic.

Just curious how many people here are new to Android?
I've noticed that there are Nook users who seem to be new to the forum. So, I am assuming that those new to NOOK are getting their first taste at Android or just never tinkered with your Android phones.
Myself, I've been with Android since the G1 and was using an Iphone 3gs prior to making the switch. Currently I have a HD2/Android, my wife has a Vibrant/ Eugene's Gingerbread and my daughter has a G1/Sparks Mod.
What about U?
I switched from iPhone to an Evo last summer, and sold my iPad around the same time (Apple's handling of the iPhone 4 antenna-gate turned me off to their company). I haven't looked back - Android is much more for me than Apple was, and the NookColor is a phenomenal tablet for me.
I never had apple products but got to play with them as I knew many people who did have it. They make a great product.
I am coming from an HTC Incredible, which is awesome. Personality wise. Android is right for me just as a PC is right for me over a MAC. for the price, this Nook Color experience can't be beat and the rooting and customizing is an awesome hobby!
NC is my first Android device. I did a fair amount of hacking with my DirecTivo which is also a Linux based hardware device.
Homer
Original Droid which I have had for a year... though it seems like longer (which made for some fun at my expense in another thread, lol.)
Android-x86 in some virtual machines and tested on a netbook and on a dual-core Atom system.
Now my phone is upgraded to a Droid 2 Global as well...
Still have the original Droid though, and loather to part with it.
iPhone owner here (jailbroken, of course).
After initial awe wore off, I didn't like my iPhone much anymore for its limitations, but after jailbreaking it and customizing it to my liking, I like it again. Always looked at Android devices with envy though. NC is my first, and I loved learning about ADB, rooting. I love Market and that I can sideload off-Market apps by just dropping them in Dropbox.
This is my first android as well. I've had the last three iPhones and loved them. But I consider them a communication device. The tablet arena had to be android for me so that I can integrate it into my job as an engineer. So far its been great! !!!!!!
get zooted with nook color
I'm new to android. Using a 3GS for my phone.
I am not new to Android. I have had the HTC Eris, LG Ally and currently I have the Moto Droid, which I love. So I am not new to Android and I have the original Nook which is rooted as well.
I am an NC owner because i was an android owner. Before this this, i had my droid incredible, and i loved the experience. Reading about what could be done with the NC, it was an easy choice to ask for it as a gift. I love this thing, and am more pleased with it than i thought i would be actually.
Learned how to root my HD2 a few months ago, and LOVE android! Coming from a blackberry, WM was driving me crazy. Blech!
I'd been drooling over my daughter's ipad, but when I learned about the NC, and the PRICE, well, gave myself a fun Christmas present. So much better than the ipad!
I've been an android user for about 10 months now. I also have a HTC Google Nexus One that is running CyanogenMod 6.1.1.
New to Android but did a lot of tinkering with my Tilt(Kaiser) and Touch Pro2 before I got my iPhone.
This is my first Android Device. Using it, I've actually decided that aside from the apps, Android was made for this screen size.
webOS is my OS of choice though.
I've had a slew of different Android phones from the G1 to the myTouch 3G. I currently have an HD2 that I've messed around with Android on. But my main phone ( and the phone that I always come back to ) is my iPhone 4...
I owned an iPad but sold it due to never using it, but when I saw the Nook color could be basically a fully functional Android tablet for $250 and it was much easier to hold than the iPad I had to buy one...
So far I'm very happy. I can't wait for full custom ROM's to become the norm...
I've had a Hero for quite some time, which I rooted and have flashed many roms to. I've been very happy with it, and was equally happy when I found out that I could root my book. Lovin' android.
Sent from my rooted Nook Color with XDA app
NC is the first Android device i offically own. But i've been a phone hacker (WM and iOS) for three years. My husband is an android guy so i hopped on the bandwagon and love it.
Sent from my XDA app on my Nook Color
I'm fairly new to Android, but sadly a Backflip was my first.
I started device tweaking back in palmpilot days as a kid, got an iTouch, thought it was okay, but then got the Backflip, loved the hardware, but the software wasn't worth it.
after that I got a captivate for free, and now my brand new nookColor (already rooted) might be getting 2.2 before my phone does. xD Happy day!
I owned the original nook, and the nookColor is a different beast all together, and is a nice cheap alternative to the Galaxy tab and iPads. and it seems to be bringing in new blood to the dev community.

New to Android yes, my last phones were the Wing/Tilt, all Rom-afied, an i <3'ed WM6.
I had figured since Android was google-ie it would be (no offense to Devs) *****ie, like no Emus for copyright reasons an so forth and thats what i used my phones for
After the phones died an seeing the ugly new WM i went to tablets for a Micro-mobile device an saw i had to settle for Android or pay 400+ for underpowered Windows.
After coming up on google voice, an app that takes away from cell phone companies, i looked into Android more and saw how Linux-ie-free-ranged it was and got the NC for Christmas.
The NC specs probably make it beastly-er (an help most stuff not work) but i fix PC so enjoy that helps it feel Linuxie an doesnt make me think of Mac stuff which i figured was googles intentions.

A big x2 here
webOS is so much easier to navigate, but Adroid on a big screen is fantastic.
One line in the article is scary. A nightmare revisited perhaps? That "WP8 will be supported for at least the next 18 months."
That is what a year and half? MS is known to release an update anyways not before a couple of years. So does that mean that the support of the "flagship" WP8 devices terminate even before the devices are launched?
LUMIA 900 is perhaps an example that we should be careful??
Your views?

Hmm.... Only Connor MacLeod, the Highlander is immortal. The lifetime of the rest stuff (including me, you and Windows) - is limited. Are you going to live forever?
You currently don't get any guarantees for longer support on any mobile platform. Apple does support it's devices longer but it is not guaranteed in any way and the iPad 1 is left out of iOS 6 although it is not that old.
The 18 months was also a plan Google announced on the IO conference last year which many manufacturers failed to live up to.
My guess (according to several interviews with Microsoft employees) is that they will not do a change to the system that goes so deep again anytime soon (where would they move as they now switched to the Desktop OSs underpinnings?). It still is a given that at some point in the future your device again won't be getting updates.
The question you are posing is if those 18 months could mean that if I buy a WP8 in 16 months it might get left behind 2 months later. Those 18 months which are guaranteed are based on the age of the device (when it was first released). A Lumia 900 kind of situation should therefore not happen again. That your device might no longer receive updates before your contract is up might happen, given that you might a) not buy the device the day it comes to market and b) the contract is regularly 6 months longer than the time frame for updates.
Where is the source with the original quote? A quick Google gives me the quote: "Microsoft will support Windows Phone 8 devices [with updates] for at least 18 months" (My emphasis).

I can kind of see what your saying but then you could argue (especially Google) that not many devices actually get support for 18 months, So if you go and buy a new WP in Oct/Nov then it will be supported for 18 months. Unlike new Android phones, Microsoft is not fragmentated (not including WP7.8). This means ALL first gen WP8 will be supprted. New Android phones come out on a weekly basis and is NEVER guranteed to get the latest Android update (unless its a Nexus).
You could argue both ways...
I believe Microsoft will be looking after 1st Gen WP8 early adoptors, but with things changing in the world of tech who knows?
I will probably get a new WP8 and a WinRT tablet to work alongside my Xbox and my Laptop... that is an ecosystem that not even Apple can rival!

Hmmm..when its android I don't fear much...for obvious reason that I can root it and flash the latest OS. Not so much so with WP8. For it, I only and only have to rely on MS.
So if they decide tomorrow that my device doesn't have the necessary hardware (deja vu?), I'm screwed...
That, was my fear...

The chances of that happening are pretty slim.
WP8 got a huge update over WP7 (i do not use the term huge lightly), which made the incompatibility stuff a problem.
Unless some huge leap in technology happens in the nest 18 months or so, we won't see this kind of problem again. It is highly likely that current wp8 will run wp9.
I for one don't think hardware will advance at such quick rate in the coming years.

It's not an argument though is it. It's simply the facts.
Google doesn't support Devices for a variety of reasons - Not least of which is that it's freeware OS, and there are several hundred devices with new ones each week.
MS have said that they will support devices for 18 months, and this is achievable, there will be maybe 50 of them by the time 18 months is up, and the manufacturer (and so in the end user) pays for the OS.

These type of comments mystify me. Of the following announced WP8 features which ones were you expecting to get on your current phone?
Multi-core processor support
1280x768 and 1280x720 screens
removable MicroSD cards
NFC wireless sharing
This is about indervidual devices not Windows Phone 8 itself! They are saying that from when a phone comes out you will have at least 18 months support (far more than anyone else promises) this does not mean that WP8 will be chopped up like 7! They switched kernel that's why you cant upgrade and they did that to be sure they have last ability.
U miss the point.
18 months is fine if it was Android. But WP8? From their track record, 18 months qualifies for one upgrade.
But not like other devices where even first gen phones enjoy the very last update...(how they perform is all together another argument).
Sent from my DROID RaZr.
Given that Microsoft is not going to change the Kernel again (where too - they are now running the Desktop OS on mobile devices) at least the community here will likely be able to provide those updates. Given that the original Developer phones like the LG panther have been able to receive at least OS updates using the CAB-Sender-Method this might be an option going forward.
But if it's ok for you to have the new version of the OS running in a kinda working way, with kinda weird problems and kinda annoying glitches it might be an option to go with Android. I'm running CM9.1 on my SGS2 which works without problems but it's one of their stable releases and they recently decided to ditch support for older devices with the Snapdragon S1 (which is also found in the 1st Gen WP7 devices). There are still ports around for those devices but with those it is like I mentioned above (glitches, problems, etc.)
In the end smartphones age quickly and at some point it is not really viable keeping them updated even though more than 18 months are definitely doable (but as was mentioned: no one guarantees you that it is a good experience).

If your were responding to me, then I miss the point again. I literally don't understand most of what you've said or the meaning - sorry.
Do Android phones get official updates 18 months after release? Not even all of the new release Android phones have the latest OS version.
What does "But WP8? From their track record, 18 months qualifies for one upgrade." mean? WP7 was released 2 years before WP8 will be released and all current WP7 phones will get WP7.8 which itself is not being released until after WP8 and may not be until next year, so that's well past 18 months. Also MS have stated that WP7 was a stop gap until WP8 was done, so a major OS change is not going to happen.
"But not like other devices where even first gen phones enjoy the very last update" Which phones and OS are you talking about? Apple don't have the latest OS on their oldest Iphones, and new Android phones don't all have the latest OS either. You've really confused me...
Are you complaining that MS will only guarantee to support all devices for only 18 months, while lauding the other OS makers who do less) because XDevs try to do it for them?

I am really confused by this post. What you are saying is that because MS make PC's and you can update a PC they should update ll there phones forever even though nobody else does? You claim its ok for android to do it because we can hack the updates on? How would that be diff from doing it to wp??? Name me one WP that is not on the latest OS version! There isn't one.
How is MS supporting your device for its life span a bad thing esp when Android comes out outdated most of the time yet that's fine. How is having a guarantee of updates leaving you out in the air????
Total garbage so do us a favor and engage the brain instead of just being a hate monger Android fan boi

How long do you keep your phone? I heard of 2 year contracts but who actually keeps it for that time without buying out? Even if so you get guarantee of 18 months not a maximum of 18months most likely you will get longer but they have to cover themselves. Also as you said before MS is more prone to big updates hence a big one each year with a smaller in the middle meaning that you should get your 18 month update that should last until the 2 years is up before the next is out anyway. I think that covers most life of phones as it covers most contract lenghs and is far beyond what the competition is doing.

WP have unofficial custom roms. The only reason that IOS and Android have more is because more people are making them, and you can't blame MS for that, especially while they guarantee to provide official updates.

I have had my 7 now for a couple weeks and I am still in awe of how ,much the single fps across the os has impacted the overall feel of Jelly Bean. I believe it is the single most important change Google made to Android in this release, and might be the turning point for Android as a whole. I don't like Apple at all, but the one thing they had in android was the smooth factor. No longer.
Nexus 7 users, share your tablet with the people in your life, let them experience this Jelly Bean build. This is huge.

My mum is a technophobic, but totally loves it. I video chat a couple of times a week using Google Talk and she is stunned by it. I had to manually put flash and iPlayer on there (as BBC are being useless cretins as usual and forgot to tell someone that Flash was being end of lifed).

I traded my samsung galaxy tab 7 plus for this. I'm so sick and tired of how sammy takes forever with their updates, and the only way for them to update their tablet is to release the Galaxy Tab 2 7Plus. Exactly the same, just with newer software.
This Nexus 7 seems to be a great device and I'm very much in awe with the performance of this device. I'm primarily using it for school, but it still gives me the horse power I need.
I am a musician from Germany, have been all Sailfish for years. That phone broke just months, before I'll get my new one, so I bought a used galaxy s8. For the first time I was on a branded phone, before the Sailfish device it were Nokia devices (N8 with Symbian and Lumina 1020 on WP).
Horrified, how many things Google asked me about and Samsung and so on, I trie to find a solution for this device. It will be my sons first own smartphone, so I want to prepare it to be reasonable "degoogled". On the other hand, he mostly likes camera-features, so I'll stick to modified stock-rom.
This is a worthwhile learning experience for me, because next I'll get a PlanetComputers Astro. Wich is a dual boot device with nice keyboard wich will mostly run on Android. So I hope to get used to the Android world before my next phone comes.
So I'll be not much of help, but I am great in asking stupid questions...
See you.
I started the game rooting my G1. You know like the first Android phone and it had a physical keyboard. Promptly installing Cyanogen MOD and keeping the phone updated well past its prime. I have used ODIN and flashed boot.img, installed custom roms and then the g-suite afterward because it couldn't be included.
That being said the last phone I rooted was a Sony back in 2015.
I just got a Pixel 2 and was happy not rooting.
Had an iPhone 12 pro for a while but promptly lost it. I can't remember passwords for ****. What a waste.
Now I have a silly little Samsung Galaxy A01 (SM-S111DL). TracFone. Don't really have access to a computer. I found the rooting thread but it is for the ATT model. I am a little weary flashing the software provided in the thread because it says for that model only.
Just because I have rooted in the past doesn't mean I am up on the latest methods.
I will keep reading the forums and lurking wisely.
BTW I am 41 years old with a degree in Computer Science but never held a job past Technial Support for Nest Learning Thermostat.
Well I dabbled in consult work with developers looking to access the API for a credit card processing gateway. We worked with SmartBear and mainly ingenico card readers.
Currently unemployed.
Also, I dabble with Ubuntu Linux, which I feel is mainly Russian software, a bit of a conspiracy theorist.
Loved the Android SDK back in the day. I used to spin up one or two instances of a particular phone. Thought I would actually develop an app one day. Didn't quite pan out, kind of past my prime in the technology department.
Any way, print "Hello, World" and all that.
