I have a touch pad with current version of WebOS and would like to install Android for the first time on it. I know I am late to the game.
I was looking here and found a tutorial, but it has bad links for the required files. With all the ROMs, tutorials around here and the dying links, can someone share link to a tutorial that is current and the required files still present for installing a stable version of Android. ICS or Jellybean preferred, if that can run stable, otherwise, I would consider going older. I am already familiar with Android, having a rooting Android phone, but somewhat overwhelmed about which information here I should pay attention to, versus what is obsolete.
Thanks
I found this tutorial with what appears to be complete set of required files
http://michaelkizer.com/Blog/tabid/...86/Installing-Android-on-the-HP-Touchpad.aspx
This is from September. Should I still be using this version of CM9, or is there a more recent one that would be better.
The tutorial says CM9 seems to be the most mature and well supported version. Should I expect all hardware on my touchpad including the camera to be working with this?
Should I use the google apps bundle from April he supplies, or another one?
Thanks
CM9 is now pretty solid and very usable everyday. I think all the main hardware works with the latest (camera has had a lot of ongoing work and may not be perfect, plus I am not sure about accelerometer / compass type inputs). CM9 should use the 29 April Gapps.
I just used this one yesterday; it updates often: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/31548-ho...-with-sound-camera-microphone-updated-121712/.
Is the file cm-9-20120916-NIGHTLY-tenderloin.zip mentioned in the tutorial still the latest stable CM9, or which version of CM9 should I use?
Can anyone else comment on the extent the hardware support issues were resolved on CM9? I would like all hardware to be working, including camera, accelerometer, compass, etc for access by Android apps, if possible.

Looks like this CM10 is still too experimental, saying not to let the battery run out and that it would brick the device. My understanding is CM9 would be safer to use, and it is still at least Ice Cream Sandwich.
It has instructions for CM9 too. In short, just replace one file.
jssullins cm 10 (look at the p0articipation #'s)
I would go with jsSullins cm10. procedure is on first page including links to relevant files.
I am trying to get the AT&T stuff out of my phone, and to have updates and bug fixes every now and then.
Untill now, found only the safestrap but i did not find any ROM that seems to have android 4.4.4. Is there anything like cyanogenmod?

Can't use a ROM with custom kernel, yet. I recommend 4.4.2 and HyperDrive 19. It works really well, has a nice installer with lots of extras, good battery life... All around, it's a really well built ROM.

As someone who was blindsided and crestfallen to find out about the locked bootloader (no cyanogenmod for us,we're S.O.L.) let me make some recommendations to at least get some of that stock android (i.e. cyanogenmod) feel back (I'm assuming you're already rooted, if not, google towelroot and follow directions):
Get SafeStrap
Flash this mod to drastically improve battery life and general performance
Get rid of KNOX
De-Odex your stock ROM (it's easy and allows a lot more customization)
And enter the exciting world of SMALI editing. This takes a little practice, and still doesn't afford the full freedom of CM, but you can customize the look and feel of your phone, still feel like a champ, and just learn about android in general. I've used a bunch of these successfully, with virtually no prior coding experience. E.g. I hated those battery/charger cover notifications, thanks to this thread, they're gone and not coming back.
Also, get rid of the stock launcher and replace it with NOVA launcher. More customization, smoother, better performance, looks more like CM. You can (and should) use Titanium Backup to either freeze or uninstall bloatware (at the very least any app with AT&T in the name).
AdAway is your friend.
Quick and easy mobile data toggle mod
I would recommend the Knox_Out zip in my post here since the one in the OP hasn't been updated since July and removes an apk you might actually need.
Hello everyone,
I have been seduced by the Mi5 and got one. Even I work in IT, I have never flashed a phone and actually didn't plan to do it when I bought the Mi5. I read that the original Chinese ROM had English in it.
So I was happy to just use this ROM in English and that's it (I'm not picky in term of UI).
But I had several bad surprised when I received it:
- many things are still in Chinese
- several applications, even if they are in English, present/search Chinese results (actually I should have thought about it earlier)
- I installed Google Play but some services keep on failing and several apps won't install or update
As a result, I'm finding myself having to flash the phone with a custom ROM in order to get something correct.
As explained in the title I would like to have some advises on which ROMs would be the easiest and most stable to have? I'm not looking the for most fancy or classy ROM. I just want something that would be stable, run smoothly GApps and popular apps (Facebook, WhatsApp, etc...) and works with the most vital/used features of the phone (Wifi, Bluetooth, finger-print, camera, etc...). I have seen threads about several ROMs (Cyanogen, Xiaomi.eu, Resurrection Remix, Official Global Multi, etc...) but don't know which one would suit me best.
Finally, I have done my homework before posting this message, and read how to flash a ROM (especially on the xda-university). Here are the general required steps I have noted:
Enter in USB debug mode
Install a custom recovery app? (I've seen you can flash them too?)
Download you customer ROM into the SDcard
Use the custom recovery to backup your phone (I actually don't need to backup since my phone is empty)
Install the rom by selecting the zip in the root of the SDcard
That said I have seen several other methods and terms on various threads talking about specific stages or the process.
People are "rooting" the phone. Is that necessary for what I want to do? I guess so.
People are are using "flashboot". I read it's another way to flash? What is best for the Mi5?
Please don't hesitate to redirect me to some guides/tutorials if there some fundamentals I have missed.
Thanks! :good:

Hi,
I would recommend xiaomi.eu's rom : https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/6-6-30.32496/
It's fully translated, stable, includes the Google apps. I've tested a lot of roms, first on a Mi4c then on my Mi5.
If you're going for a MIUI rom (and not a CyanogenMod based one), this is the best in my opinion.
The roms comes in 2 versions : the stable (no root and updated every month or so) and the weekly one (with root and updated every week).
Installation is super easy, you just need to unlock the bootloader of your Mi5 first : http://en.miui.com/unlock/

Thanks for these helpful comments!
So would you say that Xiaomi.eu ROM is more stable than the CyanogenMod ROM? And it's more stable than the official MIUI Global ROM?
In terms of things not working at all, have Xiaomi.eu and CyanogenMod ROMs everything supported/working? That's what I worried about. I would be happy to flash a custom ROM but I would like to make sure it has most of the phone features working correctly (finger-print, bluetooth, wifi, GPS, camera, etc...).

CynaogenMod is, indeed, a bit less stable because it's a port and the kernel sources haven't been published yet by xiaomi so no optimisation on this side.
But CM is the way to go if you prefer android stock over MIUI's implementation.
Xiaomi.eu's rom are as stable as official ones but richer in features and optimized (see the list on the rom download page) and with much less bloatware. They remove a lot of Chinese specific apps from and make their rom Google apps compatible out of the box.
And yes, everything works correctly, especially if you install the stable version (the weekly is more prone to bugs because it's updated all the time).
At the end of the day, I would say it's the EU/US version of MIUI. If tomorrow Xiaomi want to sell their products in the western part of the world, this is probably the kind of rom they will put on their devices.

I too would recommend the xiaomi eu Rom. The cm one works well but if you want to use android pay it has to be the xiaomi one.

Thanks for this info - i have only tried the global roms and to be honest - they bug me !
CM - as awesome as it is...still has its little bugs and annoyances.
Hopefully this is the way forward !
I bought new Oneplus 3T , could you please explain little bit about the ROMs and all the root stuff.
I had Lg g5 and it seems to be very different.
Enjoy the beauty
The following are my recommendations:
Root - Magisk
Recovery - I prefer blu_spark's TWRP
ROM- If you absolutely must have Oreo, I think Validus 8.0 is the best atm. If you're fine with nougat for now (like me) then paranoid Android works well. Stock OOS is great too, if you want to keep it.
You should be able to figure out how to install the roms and root from the instructions given in the OP of each thread.
Also, I recommend installing the Google Camera app with the slow motion fix for better shots.

This questions is really too vague to give a proper response. You want us to explain what exactly about ROMs and "root stuff"? It doesn't indicate to us whether you have modified phones before (custom ROM, and/or root), or what your level of knowledge is. You also don't state exactly what your goal or desire is. Do you want to flash a custom ROM? Do you want to root? Do you want both?
We can start guessing, and providing random info and answers. But it's probably not the best way to go about things. A lot of the info is already posted if you read and search. Everything you want to know has been asked and answered before, probably dozens of time. XDA has always been a wealth of information, for those willing to take the time to look for it.
Every phone has it's own nuances regarding mods like custom ROMs and root. Even different phones from the same manufacturer. Good advice for anyone, is to take at least an hour or so (even if you are experienced with mods - more if you are not) doing some reading of the existing resources, guides, etc. before you try to do anything with the phone. This will give you the best info on the proper way to mod this particular phone, with the most up-to-date methods, etc. Then, if you have specific questions or concerns, come on here and ask. In fact, I always do that research before I even buy the phone. It's part of the fun of a new phone, in my opinion.
I don't personally know anything about the G5. But the 3T is fairly easy to unlock the bootloader (mandatory in order to flash custom recovery, which is needed to flash ROMs and/or root), flash TWRP, then flash custom ROMs and/or root. The following guide is a pretty decent one: https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/...wrp-root-nandroid-efs-backup-and-more.475142/
Just keep in mind that some of the info (like OOS version numbers, etc.) are not completely current. And you should typically use the latest versions TWRP and SuperSU/Magisk. But the general method in the guide is still relevant.
Whether you root by SuperSU or Magisk is a personal choice. Read up on the differences, and make your decision. SuperSU is what most folks already know. But Magisk has some really cool benefits and features over SuperSU. I've personally been preferring Magisk lately. But it's by no means the only choice, or best choice for everyone.
Also, highly recommend you know how to return to stock or recover, if anything goes wrong (good advice before trying to mod any Android device). One way is using a full update zip: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/how-to/rom-oxygenos-3-5-4-mm-ota-update-t3519074
And as typical, it's highly recommended to make a TWRP backup of your stock ROM, once TWRP is installed, and before you make any mods like custom ROM or root. Which will give you another way to revert to the stock ROM, if you ever have the need.
It's obvious that the OP never dealt in the past with Root etc.
So, the first thing I would advise is start with a good understanding of what Rooting is offering in general, which has nothing to do specifically with 3T.
All devices can be rooted, so the real question is if the OP didn't care to have it in the past, what changed now?

GPS problem seems mostly on OOS 4.1.7 and 4.5.0 (4.5.1 also, it seems). And not for everyone. At some locations, the AGPS data is outdated, and leading to long waits for the GPS to achieve a lock. So depending on your location, or if your OOS version is not updated, you might not see an issue. Consider yourself lucky, and don't go looking for a problem, if it doesn't exist!
Not sure of the specific camera problem you are referring to. Some folks have complained about blurry photos in low light, with moving subjects. If that is what you are talking about, again if you don't have an issue, don't worry about it. It's not really a "bug" in my opinion. It's in line with the performance of other smartphones. Just not as good at focus (again, specifically in low light with moving subjects) as some other phones, particularly the expensive flagships like Galaxy S8 or iPhone. But you can't expect the 3T to meet all the same technical capabilities of phones that cost about double! Also, the focus in these conditions seems a bit better on the more recent OOS updates. So again, depending on what version you are on, as well as the conditions you are taking photos, and what your expectations are; the camera may not be an issue.

I agree, but with one exception. I'm using rrZenity, and i find it extremely stable on my 3t. Even more so than the official. And possibly even more so than the beautiful Sultanized rr's latest build by DroidFreak32. Plus it comes with fully functional gcam(even slowmo with all settings working perfect), adaway, wakeblock, etc. And I'm using the franco los kernel, but the built-in kernel is really good too. I'm honestly waiting for a stable RR Oreo, or oos, but thks works superbly for now. And a stable Magisk for Oreo. With Resurrection Remix, i just feel like the phone is all mine, really mine, to customize and use however I want. Just my opinion

Know what TWRP is, a good understanding of how to use it, and what a Nandroid is. I'm no pro, but I hardbricked my phone, as a noob, and it'll scare the sht out of you. There are two brick lifesavers that you must have a pc or laptop to use, and I can provide you links via request.
Now I can flash away with no worries. Not because of the unbrick tools, but twrp will save your a*s over and over again IF you know how to use it.
And donate donate donate. Developers work hard to enable us to have fun and "play" with our phones. And they spend a lot of time doing it. When you download, flash, love a rom or kernel, mod you find...donate. This enables these developers to continue work and make improvements. I find it all fascinating and fun. I used zenity. Then droidfreak32 put out build that was better, smoother, less issues. Latest builds, I found right the opposite. Zenity 10-01 running so smoothly, Sultanized had a couple of issues for me even though it's newer. Like I said, either one of those guys put out an oreo build I'm on it, cuz I trust both their builds. Hope you enjoy!

Well got this BIG OREO update, im on SEB baltic. Didn't get any big improvements. This is my first phone that i haven't rooted it yet. So the question is after oreo, does it worth to root it and install other rom's that is based on samsung oreo or aosp? What are the benefits? battery life or camera or the performance.. thanks guys.. i know this question has been asked for couple of times, but many changes became after few stock updates.
Now that samsung pay works in my country, I think that it will be more useful to me not to root, I rooted my previous devices to block ads, install viper, and make some ui visual mods, I am using adguard and works really fine for me, as for visual mods, now there are ways to more or less accomplish them without root, what I really miss is viper4A
I've always rooted but this time I'm not going to ... Samsung pay on my S3 frontier is very handy and I don't want to lose that
IMO & at this time, for me personally, no not worth it. I'm rooted, always have been since I've been running Android phones. But nothing on 8.0 Oreo is worth it to me. In fact there are more things I hate about it than on Nougat as well as imcompatibilites. I'm happy to be back on Nougat now.
I've rooted every phone I've had with the exception of the Note 7, S8+ and the Note 8. Just feel that all the great features and being able to use substratum without root far out weigh rooting for the time being.
Back in the early days of Android, most rooted for themes. I don't root for themeing. Custom recovery is essential for me too. Root without custom recovery is not worth it to me which is why I didn't buy a Snapdragon. I root mainly for system mods, apps that require root, & to enable csc features that you wouldn't be able to wiithout root. Flashing mods, roms, custom kernels, & being able to make backups is very important to me. I do run custom roms but they are the most basic ones or just simply debloated. Themes, I just run a theme from the Samung theme store which doesn't even require root. I personally don't care for Samsung Pay, never will use it. Secure folder also, I do miss private mode but I can live without. I can always use Android Pay if I really wanted to but that won't happen.
