File transfer to Desktop - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

I have Pixel 5 and Pixel 3 XL. After I have upgraded to Android 12 and file transfer to desktop was stopped working. I turn on the USB debugging and still I can not see both devices drive in Windows 12 exploer. I can chosse PTP mode can see the photos folder but other then that I can't do.
Could you please instruct me that I can get back the transfer mode, so I can transfer easily with both Pixels and desktop, thanks in advance.

Are you using Windows 11 by chance?
I'm on Windows 10 Enterprise, and File Transfer worked the same before and after I upgraded to Android 12.

I am guessing it is probably a driver issue. Did you install the correct driver's for your device?

... and check developer options for the default USB connection setting, it should say file transfer.

Ooooo, that's a great tip! I've always had to manually change it from charge to file transfer. Never thought to check this!

[Q] ICS connect to computer?

So incredibly stupid question, and not even sure how to search for it to get an answer... but I want to connect my touchpad to my computer like I used to with CM7 and transfer files over. Normally when I connected it in the past I'd get a little notification telling me I can turn on usb storage or whatever... that doesn't show up now with CM9... what do I do?
If you read the wiki, it doesnt work with cm9 yet. Boot into recovery, go to Mounts and Storage, then go down to Mount USB Storage.

Try using Wifi File manager apps.
I use the Wifi File Explorer Pro do transfer files from my PC to android devices. No physical connection is needed since it's done through wifi.
Install this app (or others. They seem to work very similarly) and launch the app on the device. Leave it running so if you have a lot of files, you might want to keep it plugged into a charger.
The apps will give you an IP address.
Go to your PC and launch a web browser. Type in the address the app gave you. You are now connected. Go to the folder you need to add files to and search your PC for files to transfer. Done...

What I'm told you are supposed to do is to open /Settings/Developer Options and uncheck Android debugging. Then when you connect to a Windows computer, it will see the TP as an MTP device.
Unfortunately, I've yet to get this to work. I've tried a couple of Win7 boxes and both see the TP as an MTP device and try to load drivers for it. But after a couple of minutes trying, it pops up an error message saying if failed to load the drivers. On an XP box the only option you get when you plug in the TP are to use either Media Center or Winamp, both of which seem to look only for "media" files.
The only way I've found to transfer files directly to/from the TP is to reboot and choose Clockwork Mod from the boot menu and then /mounts and storage/mount USB storage. Then your TP appears as a regular USB hdd on whatever computer you connect.
I've tried to google for MTP support but the only things I've found relate to connecting Digital Cameras.
Okay so no offense but you all have it wrong. I can see my CM9 Alpha 2 in my Windows 7 desktop machine just fine. You need to do the following:
1) Go into Settings
2) Click on the Storage
3) Up in the right top corner of your TouchPad screen you see 3 boxes, click (touch) that.
4) Then click (touch) USB computer connection that pops up
5) Now make sure the box labeled Media device (MTP) is checked
DONE! You should be able to connect your TouchPad booted into CM9 Alpha 2 and transfer files over to it just fine. Mine comes up as cm_tenderloin on my Windows 7 64-bit if I recall correctly!
I hope this helps and I hope it works! Let me know!

The same way you'd find any other file on the TP. Use a File Manager such as Root Explorer.

I'll have to try this MTP option. I've just been using the wifi file browsers like Airdroid or booting into WebOS for file transfer. Thanks.

MTP Folder empty

When I connect the Note via USB to either Win7 32- or 64-bit, I get the empty folder "Galaxy Note" undrr My computer. The normal usb connection works fine but it's a hassle to always enter settings menu, connections, usb, connect, then plug in usb, connect again...
What could cause this?

Shed more light!!
What rom you using??
Custom or stock??
Will be able to help you better!!
I had the same problem. Fixed it with a reinstallation of drivers.
1. Go to Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>System
2. Select Device Manager
3. Expand Portable Devices. You should see you GT-N7000 listed there.
4. Right-click on that and select uninstall.
5. Unplug you device from usb, wait a moment and re-connect.
Windows will now detect it as a new device and install the drivers. Let it do its work and you should now have your folders visible under the MTP device browser.
It Worked!

Thank You so much.
I struggled for days but was not able to find the correct solution. This simple thing worked, And now Kies working too!
By the way I am on Samsung S Plus GT-I9001 and OS is Win XP 64 bit prof edition.
Earlier Instead of GT-I9001, just MTP was visible in device manager. I uninstalled it, connected the phone again and then it was showing GT-I9001. My computer also showing same name folder with everything accessible and Kies working too now.
Please note that Kies is also working on a machine with Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate without any issue. So Kies is not to blame. This is for all those who like me used to think samsung had made such a bad software.
Thx mate I had the same pb with my SG3.. Now it works fine !!!
Just to complete : if on windows XP you don't even see your mtp device it's because you need at least windows media player 10 or 11
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol
Windows 7
Make sure that you do not remove "Windows Media Center" feature under Programs and Features in Control Panel on Windows 7. It will cause MTP to show up as empty!

Why does my computer no longer recognize my phone after doing marshmallow update?

I have two Nexus 6s, one completely stock and one that I just upgraded to Marshmallow. I downloaded sdk and minimal adb and fastboot today in order to install marshmallow. I just plugged in my completely stock unmodified Nexus 6 into my computer to get my photos off my stock Nexus before I send it back to amazon and although the phone charges, nothing pops up for it being a storage device, I switched it between MTP and PTP on the phone but it does nothing, the phone does not show up, same goes for the Nexus 6 that has marshmallow on it, also switched that to MTP. My computer detects the phone because it allows me to eject it from usb but that is about it. Anything else I can try? trying to get pics off the old Nexus before I send it back.

btw adb sees the phone no problem
I have the same problem. Windows seems to recognize the phone, but it displays no content when I try to browse files.
Just did a clean flash of the factory image.
EDIT:
Ok, I'm an idiot... here's the solution:

nope that does nothing on my phone, both are set correctly at MTP or PTP, nothing works
BTW when I eject the USB it lists it as "android adb interface" I have a feeling that is why it is not showing up?
Mine just says MTP when I eject it. Did you try toggling USB debugging on and off?

I deleted the adb driver and that fixed the issue but that can't be the correct way because I think it would be pointless to have to install and delete the adb driver each time I want to use it? I knew it was more computer related than phone related but what is the correct way to make the phone work with a adb driver installed on the computer?

I honestly don't know. I've always had mixed results. Sometimes it would work automatically, sometimes I'd have to manually install the google drivers when the phone is in the bootloader.
Had the same "problem", to fix it and for windows to show the contents of the phone, you just need to pull down the top drawer and select mtp file transfer from the USB options. It is set for " charge only" as default. Try it out!

Exactly: it is not a problem, but just a new way to manage USB connections. You just have to pull down the status bar and choose one of the USB options for your Nexus 6
lol you guys aren't understanding, I did that and it did not fix the issue. The phone was still not recognized as a storage device. I also tried a Nexus 6 that was on 5.1.1 which does not have the charging only option in the drawer and it also was not recognized but once I deleted the adb driver from my computer, my computer saw both as storage devices when I put them into MTP mode
Go into developer settings
Make sure checked Debugging on
Then Scroll down
Look for MTP CHange it to something else in the settings
then back MTP Your computer will then see it it bug in 6.0

How to get Windows drivers after Pie update?

Hi,
I upgraded my Nokia 8 to Pie a while ago and now I had to reinstall windows.
Now when I connect the phone to my computer I get the CD drive that should contain the driver but when I try to open it I get a "Please insert a disk into CD-ROM drive F:".
So... how to get the driver from the phone in this case? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the CD device, tried reassigning a drive letter to no avail. This was working just fine prior the Pie update. Any help much appreciated.
Thanks!

What i tried was remove all usb root hubs from device manager on windows and then scan for hardware changes. Everything was back to normal. But since you just reinstalled windows, i don't know if it'll work. But no harm in trying, right?
Also, try searching for drivers from windows update. Check device manager to try and update the mtp drivers manually from windows update.
Or you could just connect it to some windows 7 pc, copy all drivers and install it in your windows 10 one.

Whatever I did, it showed up only as an empty drive. I ended up crawling the filesystem via `adb` and pulled the iso from the phone. It's still there, it just doesn't mount the contents. So I extracted it and put it in Gdrive for future reference. Whoever is interested, can find it here.

Dex for PC

In a hope we can get the Dex to PC for the Note 8.
Download attached file:
SamsungDeXSetup.exe is the Dex PC App
Can be downloaded from:
https://www.samsung.com/uk/apps/samsung-dex/
Only including it, as it never appeared for me, untill i installed Dex on my phone and connected it to my PC.
Copy: DeXonPC and LinkToWindowsService to system/priv-app
Set permissions and reboot.
When you connect your Phone to the PC, it should come up about Dex and to install it on the PC.
(This is as far as i have gotten, I believe i am missing other files)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Q7dV51DVp8_5lBYrL1y5FiL3gpVihn2k/view?usp=sharing
Hi can you share MacOS program ?
Can you please give Detailed information
Can you please give some more details about what permissions to set and what about the file "com.sec.android.app.dexonpc_1.0.00.91" ? Where to Place this file ?
Thanks in Advance
Going down this path as well. Everything installed on my phone and windows; windows link works no issue. Dex installed on PC.
Now, when I plug my phone in via USB C, I get a message from Dex: "To start Samsung Dex, connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable."
The windows app itself seems to be looking for a Note 9 / 10 driver, maybe?
Apologies as I won't be of any help, but just wanted to say that this is exactly the thread in note 8 I was looking for after the DeX for Windows announcement.
I will be watching this thread carefully and hopefully we can get this to work on the note 8!
Thanks in advanced everyone
Actually this only works with the Note10 series.
Hope to see this working on the Note8 in the future.
So I guess we are waiting for someone to extract whatever driver or file Dex desktop needs to see from Galaxy Note 10?
I don't think we will ever see this feature for DeX on the Note 8.

I managed to install it but samsung dex pc still couldn't recognize my phone
I installed this on my Windows 10 PC and it doesn't accept the USB connection from my S9+ on my Windows PC.
Can you please elaborate on this method for those of us who are not proficient in technology?
What can I find the system/priv-app folder? And what permissions do I set and where to set them from?
Ive had Linux on Dex working (on my win10 desktop) on my ATT note 8 for a while now. I just installed via the official app, then it worked in terminal mode. But when i plug in a cheap USBC to HDMI +USB3 otg adapter on eBay and soon as i plugged it in, it loaded on TV and worked. You guys talking about something else?
So followers of this thread, any luck in getting the Note 8 to show dex mode while connected to a windows or mac PC?
Has anyone tried to connect after installing the dex computer software and then plugging in the Note 8 to the PC?
We will see this creativity for Note 8 ?
Hi, maybe with the new security update (dec 1) is the dex for pc works with note8?
Thanks!
