Question Double tap to select text - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

Samsung took this feature out on an update with their S6 i believe, and its never returned. Its literally the only thing keeping me from buying a Samsung phone. A major portion of what i do on my phones is type, and having to tap and hold to select a word, or backspace all the way back and retype just kills my productivity and frustrates me endlessly... Double tapping to select a word is a million times faster!
Am I unique in adoring this feature? My last Samsung phone was the S10 and i couldnt stand it for that one reason, took me a lot longer to type anything. My wife has the Z Fold 3 and the feature is still gone.
Are there any mods or anything that add this functionality back?

Interesting. Seems to work on my N10+/Pie variant. It grabs it fast enough.
May have to do with your touch delay settings.
Sometimes in portrait vs landscape the highlighted area jumps large areas unexpectedly so you roll it to landscape. Other than that it works well for me.

To alleviate one of your two complaints, use SwiftKey.
There is a gesture to delete the entire previous word. That gesture is faster than a double-tap, so you would increase your productivity. The gesture is simply dragging across toward left. Equivalent to Windows's Ctrl+backspace that deletes the previous word.
Also FYI you can hold down the space bar to activate the mode where you can scroll the cursor back and forth within a given word.
Anyway, sorry I don't have a solution for the double-tap,. but I wanted to make sure you were aware of the SwiftKey gesture to delete an entire word.

If you use gboard, double tap to select word works as intended. Doesn't work with Samsung keyboard.

Very interesting... Prior to my wife getting the Z Fold 3, she had the Note 10+ and it didn't work there either. She uses gboard and so do i. SwiftKey and GBoard both have gestures to delete the last word, but i swipe pretty fast and I'm usually several words passed a misspelled word before i notice it, so i still need to tap on the word to correct it. Double tapping makes sense, but it didnt work on the S10, S10e (my son has this), Note 10+, or the Z Fold 3.
For those of you using the Note 10 and S21 and its working, are you running custom rom's or kernels? Any mods that could potentially add this feature back? Are you on a European variant of the phone with the Exynos processor or do you have the Snapdragon version in the U.S.?

This feature is really convenient. Never heard about it

Also works on Galaxy S10 with gboard.

I'm using the S21U, Exynos model, Indian unit with stock Samsung firmware (Android 11, AUJ7). No custom mods or tricks. Just the regular gboard

So if you double tap a word to highlights it, right?
My stock N10+/Android 9 does that, haven't tested the Q variant.
Never knew it did that until I read this thread, a cool short cut

Yes thats exactly it. When i had my S10, i went to Samsung support and spoke to them. They confirmed this feature was removed and they had no plans to add it back. They didnt give me any reasons behind why.
I'm really confused how some of you have this feature, even though Samsung says it was removed and i cant get it to work. @enigmaamit has the exynos variant, i'm thinking that *could* potentially be reason for it working, not necessarily the processor but its likely different dev teams that works on the builds for each country, the U.S. team removed it for whatever reason. Lots of speculation...
I got rid of my S10 because I couldnt double tap to select a word. Now im super confused haha

Thank you for teaching me this trick, never realized it was there.
I see why you're irritated.
My N10+ is a AT&T Snapdragon variant running on Pie. It's twin is running on Q but don't have the sim card in it to test it fully.
It seems this feature works only in the Brave browser but not the Samsung browser and not on any other apps. So maybe it's a feature of the Brave browser? WTF? Grrrr.
So maybe try Brave browser and see if you at least can have it there. That's just weird.

Glad you got something from this thread! haha, even though its only in the Brave browser...
I can see this being supported in specific apps but not through the OS. Im considering the S22 when it comes out, but im not sure i can give up my double tap. I use it every hour through the day. Once i discovered it was gone on my S10, i figured i'd just get used to tap and hold. Gave that many months and gave up! I'll keep searching, there's got to be a way to get it back...

It's likely one of the many small Samsung system apks. I wonder if you could install a copy of it?
I doubt it but no harm in trying. It simply will or won't install. Good luck trying to find that little bugger though as it's name is probably cute and misleading
Lol, don't get me started...
I find the new Samsung vid player annoying as it lost the skip backward/forward buttons.
Gallery is a mess. The photo editor sucks. My primitive S4+ apps were better? WTF Samsung?
Lol, maybe I disabled a needed apk but pretty sure I didn't.
Samsung's are a handful, that last thing I need to do is an arbitrary update. What will be gained vs what will be broke. Especially firmware but Samsung broke my Buds Wearables sound with their last update. Rolling that back and disabling updates for it wasn't fun. Samsung even made the Good Lock main page look like goofy jumping animated Korean graffiti. Who wants to see that creepy stuff? I have to see if I roll it back if I can block updates without it timing out when not able to call home. Samsung ETware

Coming from a Note 2, and I rely a lot on Google Now (aka Voice Search).
I was able to set up my Note 2 to launch Google Now by long pressing the menu key.
If there's a way to do this on the Note 3, I haven't found it yet. Anyone know a way? (For now, my workaround is to long press the home key to bring up task switcher and press the globe icon to launch Google Now.)
Question 2:
I used Internet Browser (had manually installed flash) on my Note 2. The version on my Note 2 had a "Labs" menu where you could turn on a circular floating menu feature to operate most browser functions by just sliding your thumb in from a screen edge. I got really fast with that and feel very inefficient in the browser without it.
My Note 3's Internet Browser app doesn't appear to have a "Labs" menu at all. Any secret way anyone knows to get that menu (or the floating circular thumb menu feature) back on this apparently newer version of the app? I know loading an older version of the app is probably out of the question without root.
Thanks for reading my stupid questions.
Despite these minor quibbles, I'm really loving this faster, brighter phone and its (in my opinion) vastly better camera.

I'm relatively new to Android. I had a few Kindle Fires and an S2 Skyrocket but didn't do anything much with either. After having an iPhone 5s and being underwhelmed, I switched to the Note 3 and love it. My problem is my battery life has been poor. The battery life was supposed to be awesome and I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong.
Here's what I do now.
-Keep screen as dim as it will go
-Have Juice Defender that switches WiFi and data off/on depending on what's being used
-Bluetooth & GPS off unless I need them
-Auto-Sync is off and I have data restriction on
-I periodically go into the running apps and stop what's useless to me (Games, Samsung Apps etc.)
I may be overreacting, but I heard this battery is great and it's going down fast by just web browsing. Is there anything I'm missing being new to Android and all? Thanks.
Have the pen button gestures from the note 2 been removed from the note 3? I miss the one for going home.

On Q3. Google updated maps and removed labs. Really pissed me off becuase I used the labs stuff. I actually think the newest version is worse than the desert version. Does that seem to be a way to add it back.

I'm currently with Sprint and thinking of switching over to AT&T (Sprint 4G/LTE signal sucks at my work location) and get a Note 3 (or MotoX, but most likely Note 3). I'm new to the whole GSM smartphone in US so I'm unclear on a few things, especially regarding Sim Lock and Bootloader lock on AT&T
Here's my questions:
Why bother locking Bootloader? The official words seem to be that the Carriers are worried about untested software running on their networks and could cause problems. However, people are mentioning that they can pay full retail price for a T-Mobile phone which is not bootloader locked and sim unlock it and use it on AT&T. If anyone can do that (if they want to pay for the phone in full) there WILL be untested software running on their network anyways.
Why bother locking the sim card? It's not like I can unlock my phone and cancel my contract and move to T-Mobile, I'll still get slap by a Early Termination Fee to pay off the subsidized portion of the phone and then some.
If I want to use my phone elsewhere in the world, I heard that the phone is Region Locked as well, and if I don't unlock the sim or use the region unlock apk, I can't use it outside of US. Are there any issue if I pay to remove the sim lock? e.g. will AT&T fine me or something if they finds out? (I currently don't have to deal w/ this problem because no one else in the world use CDMA, and I just get a cheapo dumb phone when I travel).
thanks

AT&T won't fine you if you unlock your device.. I'm pretty sure they would do it for you for a fee.
Ok, under s pen option. It says turning off pen detection when the pen is attached can save battery. What does that mean? What are they calling pen detection?
Also, I can not get burst mode to work while taking pictures. I assume it is press and hold like any other phone right?

To answer your first question your phone is always making sure (yes here come the jokes) you got the pen in it. But turning that off will save battery life. It will still detect when you take it out.

What kind of system language is available on this device? As in, menus, apps, etc. (not keyboard since keyboard can be downloaded through play store, etc.), all in a certain language. From my past experience with AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 and S3 phone, there is no Chinese as a system language if I remember correctly and wondering if this still the same.

*sigh* AT&T/American Samsung phones never have Chinese as system language...

Samsung is permanently crippling the Note 7 in the U.S.

You knew it was coming in the USA and it looks like December 19 is the day.

What's to stop people from not accepting this update just like the previous one? Unless it's a forced update it won't really change anything

When you reboot the device it will do the updates on one of the reboots. This is true even if you "delayed" the update.
There is a way to prevent the previous update (you can see on this forum). Unless they found a way around that work around good chances that the same work around would work for this update. I would recommend doing the work around now and before this update.
The work around for previous update. Hope this will work for this update too.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-note-7/how-to/updated-limited-to-60-heres-fix-t3495293
I read someplace today that Samsung made a request to the makers of all package disablers on the Playstore to block the Note 7 from being able to take advantage of this... I'll try and find the article.
The one i found isnt supported by the playstore and still has the update packages. Look at the link JaguarXT posted
I highly doubt all the apps are getting on board. I used titanium to block a lot of samsung crap before this and I never got the last update and I won't get this update either.
According to what I read, T-Mobile will be pushing the update on December 27th, that's what CNET is reporting. It also mentions the dates for AT&T as well as Sprint.
Yep I got text from tmobile says starting 27 phone won't be able to charge so turn it in.
Looking like it's time to find a replacement, sadly nothing seems up to par
It will seem like a bold change from what I know and am used to but I'm considering the Honor 8. The specs don't seem to bad for the price point. But it's definitely not a Note 7. I was thinking about going back to the Note 5 but I don't even see it available on the T-Mobile website anymore.

That's because you had the good foresight to root, unlike some of us (pointing at myself). Samsung strong-armed all the package disabler devs on the Play Store to no longer block System apps! The way around it was then to purchase the new version anyway and obtain a license, uninstall, then side load an older version. But then in another update even that route was blocked by no longer granting licenses or something. Then someone provided another app independent of the Play Store to side load which is what is being referred to above. It's gotten nasty!!!! Our ranks will shrink further as those who are severely technically challenged fail to take measures to block this update. Personally, I can't help but wonder/worry if Sammy has some type of back door, but that's the conspiracy theorist in me, lol!

Why? You should have just kept the Note7 until the S8 came out... now you have an obsolete phone in 3 months.
I still have the Note 7, the s7 edge worked out in my favor actually. They gave me a Gear VR and now when the next phone drops I'll give my wife the s7 edge. She still has an S5 so it will be a nice upgrade for her.
I'm lost dude. So I have the second version of the Note 7, you know, the one that was supposed to not malfunction. Model # SM-N930T with T-Mobile. OK, so my phone did receive the forced update that make my battery charge to only 60%, I was able to use ODIN and put back the stock firmware, I installed PACKAGE DISABLER PRO and blocked the necessary items needed so I am now at 100% battery life. How is it that we know that is still not enough to block this new update that is coming to cripple the Note 7??? Maybe we are still safe, or is it FACT that it WILL still be forced even though we have the updates and tmobile and Samsung items blocked? Also, with what I have explained, can my phone still be rooted and install a custom ROM or am I too late or second version of Note 7 it was never possible???? Someone please help, I am not a noob, I have been installing custom ROMs since Galaxy S2, but at the same time I am no PRO. All info will help me and the community clarify this sticky situation. PLEASE HELP. AND THANK YOU ALL!!!!! Nothing compares to the Note 7, what other phone has IRIS EYE SCANNER, a SECURE FOLDER LOCK that you can add a secondary app of one you already have with a completely different account, you can lock your notes in SAMSUNG NOTES, an S PEN, A FREAK'N S-PEN for crying out loud!!!!! I'm not 100% sure but the steps with package disabler that you've done should allow you to not have to worry about the new update coming through, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
As for rooting you're out of luck, only the original firmware that shipped with the phone was rootable. After that, this is as good as it gets for us firmware wise
Thnx

Note 9 T-mobile VS Note 9 Unlocked comparison and camera shutter sound question

Hi, everyone!
Since Samsung has ignored my question regarding the missing shutter sound feature in their unlocked version I have decided to post it here in the hope that someone has a solution. Disabling the system sounds solve this, but I would rather use another option, such as renaming the shutter sound or an alternative. I'm posting here photos only of the software differences between the Note 9 (T-mobile VS Unlocked) versions. As for the ****ter sound fiasco, the long story shortened:
I bought my Note 9 unlocked directly from Samsung, but my wife got her from T-mobile. I was looking to disable the shutter sound but couldn't find that option, so I've opened on both phones the camera settings and surprisingly found that the shutter sound option is present only in the T-Mobile variant. This indicates that Samsung doesn't really care about the customers in specific markets as they push one firmware for all (just renaming it to match the region). The law in certain countries such as Japan prohibits the disabling of such feature, but the States has no such regulations so it should not be put under this umbrella as well. Other than that, I love my Note 9, but I dislike the way Samsung mistreating its customers with such generalizations. Rooting is not an option as it will kill Samsung Pay, so please suggest a solution aside from disabling the system sounds. I posted this question at Samsung Plus, but the moderator marked it falsely as solved. I don't want to look like a whiner, but Samsung should have played this better, considering the hefty price tag($1K) of their phone, and provide a specific region/country firmware without the limitations known to exist only in certain markets. Thanks in advance for your time, folks!

I had this issue with the Note 8 last year. Told Bixby to "turn off camera shutter sound" and that worked. Don't know if it will work on the Note 9....worth a shot.

Great post. Also add RCS messaging to the list . Unlocked ones don't have this on USA carriers.
However, my help manual is present in settings menu. I'm on Sprint using unlocked version.

Didn't work. Bixby just opened the camera...
I don't have the option too, SM-N960F/DS (exynos variant)

Google RCS messaging and you'll see. Compared to regular SMS.. Not a big deal for some as folks can install Google Android messaging to enable that lost stock messaging feature.

I did Google it but honestly I can't really tell exactly how it benefits me. It sounds like it's only helpful if I'm texting someone else who has an Android with RCS enabled

Definitely not saying I don't want it! I'm just not sure how to tell whether or not it's been something that I use now or have used before. I couldn't really find a way to tell if it's been functioning.
So on my unlocked note 9 (snapdragon) when my phone is on vibrate or silent there is no shutter sound, I work in an office so I'm usually on vibrate mode negating this issue. I prefer having a shutter sound when I'm not in a quiet environment like an office, this way I know when a pic actually is taken, especially with the new spen feature. I don't see this as a huge deal if you use vibrate / silent mode. If you really want Samsung to make a change, the camera app is an regular Samsung app (go to camera settings >about) that can be updated from the galaxy app store, if your request goes to Samsung they could update the app easily

Regressions compared to previous Note (5/7/8)

Hi, fierce Galaxy Note 9 owners !
Having this phone for less than a month now, in replacement to my Note 5, I'd like to know if any of you experienced some regressions : which functionalities have disappeared from you previous Galaxy Note phone, and what are the workarounds you found ?
To quickly begin by my experience, some regressions I've found :
- Loss of the ability to easily pick up the calls by voice (you have now to pass through Bixby, only in English)
- Loss of the ability to set timeout duration for lockscreen, after the phone have been woke up without being unlocked
- Loss of the ability to span a background image on multiple spaces
Did you experience any other regressions ?
I wish I can add anything here but I was coming from Note 4.
-no removable battery
-no IR blaster
-durable design
Didn't see any reason to move little steps and spend money in between Notes.
I dont like Bixby. It is redundant. The interaction is very slow.

Regressions from my limited exposure to this Note9:
-I used to have lag, now I don't. Maybe if I open 45 apps at once and put on power saving mode, I can recreate the lag?
-I used to take pictures of my kids with my phone, which resulted in them not smiling because they saw a camera in their face. Now that I'm using my s-pen with Bluetooth, I can surreptitiously snap photos in the moment. Now my kids look natural and are smiling. How do I fix this and get back to straight-faced stares?
-My battery used to die early and allowed me to remove my phone from my person and let it charge. This kept me from being connected to social media 24/7. Now I have no way to escape it because the battery lasts all day! HOW DO I FIX THIS??
-I used to be able to subtlely take out my phone and make a call or text without anyone caring. I'm an introvert, so this was great. Now, everyone wants to know where I got my phone, how I got such an amazing-looking color, etc. It's very uncomfortable. No fix in sight!
-Used to be able to have an excuse to delete photos because I ran out of space and was forced to analyze which photos were really necessary. The one I accidentally took of my feet? Probably can delete... NOW, there's no way I'll EVER run out of space and I'll have those stupid photos clogging up my phone forever! VERY FRUSTRATING!

Fair enough
Though, I didn't mean here to point out the ameliorations over previous Note versions : all the threads in XDA and myself having bought a Note 9 show them enough.
However, when posting these (software) regressions, I'm hoping that some might be corrected in next firmware updates.

It's not this timeout I was thinking of.
I was convinced that the re-lock time just after the screen wakes up was parametrizable. I was wrong.

Regression, I haven't been this happy with a Note since my beloved Note 3! What took Samsung so long?
My only gripe is that the swipe right to call or swipe left to message has been removed in Note 9
Was working fine on Note 8.

Try Pulse or Textra. Both are way better anyway.
There is no more simple "swipe" to unlock from lockscreen. So instead I use the smart lock feature, which is not very smart. It works about half the time. Not only that, I really NEED the simple swipe to lock. I WANT my phone to not be able to be opened up accidentally in my pocket (or other places) but I don't want to use a password, PIN or other actual LOCKING function. Just a simple swipe - does everything I need without the hassle of a more complicated security lock, which is not nearly as easy to unlock as swipe to unlock... I know I am not the only one who dislikes that they took away this feature. If you make it "swipe to unlock" on the Note 9, it deletes all of your biometric information. So in other words, you can't use your fingerprint to unlock you banking app unless you have password or PIN lock on you lockscreen. Stupid to make it this way Samsung. My Note 8 has swipe to unlock and I get to keep my biometric data.

I don't notice the problem in real use, but many people do, samsung should recall all unites and fix this.
I remember this diagnostic tool is not appropriate for some reason. Download Touch Screen Test from Play Store and do the test again. Also, the latest firmware update BUA5 has been reported to fix the issue completely, which my phone hasn't received yet (unlocked on Verizon).

? it is valid, it recognizes the ghost touching tf
I think you're suppose to follow the rectangles and make an "X"; if those register after being touched it's working correctly.
If you have an after market screen protector this may screw it up.
If you're inadvertently touching the screen that can screw it up.
Try increasing or decreasing touch sensitivity.
Try enabling accidental touch protection if that's an option.
Clear the system cache on the boot menu.
Try a hard reboot (not reset!!!).

the thing is it's probably happening to more people because they ****ed the phone with cheap components
the fix they promise just hides the problem away in the touch screen test app
that's why im angry
I'm on the latest BUA5 and for me it didn't fix the issue. Maybe it did make it a little bit better, but it is not completely gone. For me the touch issue is so small, I don't mind. I can only encounter the problem in the test app.
My guess is that many who think it is fixed, didn't swipe fingers fast, close or long enough. The problem won't occur if you swipe on the edges of the screen and it won't occur immediately, only after some time.
OR then it is really fixed for some, but then I guess I'm not the lucky one

Samsung will substitute components and smaller chipsets as needed during a production run.
Result unpredictable behavior after firmware updates because the firmware wasn't configured for the substitute chipset.
It's so bad Sammy doesn't know what chipsets were used without physically examining the unit.
After which they can correct the firmware... presumably or replace said component.
Send it in or get a replacement if you believe you have a major issue.
Welcome to Sammy's beta hardware test program

You are right. Swiping up and down alternately with two fingers close enough still creates ghost touches, far apart no issue. Although the fix may not be perfect, in day to day use I'd say the fix is good enough, because we hold a phone in a landscape mode when playing games, and two thumbs are far apart from each other.

I have the 10+. If Samsung repairs it they will send it back with the original seals. It's not rocket science.
In time after enough have been seen Samsung may well include a firmware patch for the effected units. Lol, after over a year and a half Samsung finally has the Buds+ firmware dialed in... they sound great, now.
You could also demand a full refund.
If I could get one out of Sony... anything is possible
Rule #1 no free rides.

They will probably in some months completely fix it. It doesn't affect normal use anyway so, i will just let it go
Imagine paying so much for the buds + and only after a year the firmware is right
They have been putting out firmware updates, and the problem has been getting fixed, but not 100%
