Flashing Updates - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hey, just wondering if when flashing updates do I need to do them sequentially or can I skip to the most recent?
My Note 9 is stuck on Android 9 and security patch nov 2019, can't update the normal way or with smart switch.

One way to install updates is to download your latest firmware from Samfirmware then install it via Odin in PC. Flashing to the latest firmware AFAIK is allowed, skipping the previous older firmwares.
If you're previously rooted, it will remove the root.
Best to make a backup first of your important data to an external sd card or to your PC. Updating sometimes require the phone to do a factory reset to have a successful update.

[Q] OTA update problems

Guys,
I flashed my Note with a HK Original Samsung ROM (N7000ZSKK1, obtained at the development section).
When I bought it in Shanghai, it had a modified version of the original firmware with lots of china apps that meddle with what I want to do, and since it had superuser on there I knew it was flashed. probably from a China issue version that doesn't have google apps
All seems fine after flashing the original HK version, except for one thing: I get software update notifications, and when I try to install them, I get an installation failure notification. I thought that if a phone had a correct ROM installed, it would be able to receive OTA updates? I was hoping to get Samsung's ICS update officially (rather than performing ROM flashes each time an update comes along...).
I used Mobile Odin to flash the firmware. Without checking (e.g. by installing titanium backup) I don't know if it is still rooted or not. Prior to flashing it the unit was actually not rooted (the chinese unrooted it after flashing the custom HK ROM I think), and it had the same issue wrt not being able to install OTA updates.
Any idea why I cannot install OTA updates?
Alternatively, what's the easiest solution to keep my phone up to date with samsung's latest and greatest?

Sometimes OTA updates get fail. Try with Samsung Kies.
Tried that, but it gives the message "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies". It states for current firmware version: PDA:KK1 / PHONE:KJ6 / CSC: (TGY)
SHould I be installing a different firmware?

Can't Install OTA after MM root/recovery

I am currently on N910TUVS2EPG2 "July Security update" which I've only installed TWRP recovery and root. I went back to samsung stock recovery and unrooted. But system/data/other partitions were left alone. However when trying to install the "October Security update" the update still caught me with a modified phone.
I get a the familiar message:
Software Update
The operating system on your device had been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software update using Smart Switch on your computer...

Has anyone tried to sideload the TMO OTA "October Security update" through the the stock recovery? I'm referring to these 2 options in the stock recovery.
apply update from adb
apply update from sdcard
I know the full system images are uploaded by DeeXii and located HERE. But I don't see the OTA files anywhere. Where can i download the October OTA update?
Apparently there is this wonderful official Samsung app called Smart Switch. I had low expectations of getting the OTA since this seems like a generic cover all bases message from Samsung. Before running Smart Switch I had went back to Samsung's stock recovery and unrooted.

It detected N910TUVS2EPG2 "July Security update" running on the phone. And offered to upgrade to EPJ2 "October Security update". I accepted, the app took some time to download a big update. I'm guessing it's the full 2GB note 4 stock image. After the download was complete the phone automatically rebooted to "Download Mode". Smart Switch pushed the update, booted, cache had be to rebuilt.
At this point I am on the EPJ2 ROM and EPJ2 modem firmware. Everything was back to stock but my data, apps, settings are completely intact. I had to disable a few apps like Amazon, Facebook, Flipboard, Google+, Hangouts, etc. which were re-enabled by the new ROM. All that was left to do was use Odin to install twrp and SuperSU. Kudos to Samsung for making it easy. :good: :highfive:

N950F Exynos how to root Oreo please?

Good Morning,
I have a carrier unlocked Australian N950F Exynos Note 8 running 7.1.1 with OEM Unlock showing in developer settings (took a week or so). My phone has downloaded but not yet installed this OTA:
N950FXXU3CRC7/N950FOLN3CRC7/N950FXXU3CRC7 (1021.03MB)
I think it'll be Oreo but I haven't checked which exact version.
I have not installed TWRP or rooted this phone yet but I'd like to do so. I'd also like to move to Oreo before I proceed as my battery life could be better.
What is the best way to proceed? I've read through some long threads and ended up confused about exactly what's the best procedure.
Is some kind or decryption required at some point? Will I lose the data currently on my phone?
I haven't installed the OTA update yet.
Thank you.
CRC7 is Oreo, 8.0 which is currently the latest for Note8 (8.1 may be a long while out if we even get it officially).
The process for rooting Oreo is basically the same as Nougat, for Oreo just be sure you are using the updated TWRP that fixes the data mount issue.
If you root Nougat first, you won't be able to update OTA so you'll then need to install a custom rom to get Oreo.
You can update to Oreo via OTA first & your data will be intact but regardless if Oreo or Nougat, after installing TWRP you'll need to wipe data to remove encryption. So yes, you will loose data. You won't loose internal or external storage unless you choose to format them but it's a good idea to make a backup of them just in case.
As for data, you'll need to use smart switch, helium, etc if you want to back it up. I have no experience with backing up data without root so I'm not sure what methods work best.
It seemed to work. I restored all my contacts, apps etc in Oreo. When I went to restart the phone and enter TWRP to flash magisk I get a message about only official binaries are allowed. Now the phone won't even boot. I'm guessing I now need to re-flash official firmware with odin just to get my phone working? Another week for OEM unlock? I waited this long because I thought the problem was resolved
Unfortunately if you have the OEM lock issue, that will never go away. So yes, you have to flash official firmware to boot again. If you were on Oreo, you can try flashing Nougat to see if you might get lucky & get OEM unlock back.
Since you have the OEM lock issue, remember to always flash the RMM state fix even if you flash a custom rom that has the fix built in. Always flash RMM fix right after flashing a custom rom. If not flashing a custom rom, flash RMM fix before booting to system after you install TWRP.
Thanks for the reply.
Was I supposed to install Samsung AntiRoot Removal and RMM State Bypass as per this guide? Is this guide the correct method?
galaxynote8root.com/galaxy-note-8-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-8-on-android-8-0-oreo/
I'm currently downloading Oreo 8.0 XSA (unbranded Australian rom) to reload my phone and wait another week.
I would like to use the XSA Samsung rom rather than a custom rom. Is OEM Unlock available in Oreo after a week?
Thank you
I use the method listed in any of the TWRP threads. I've never heard of Samsung Anti Root Removal. By the sound of it on the page it sounds like dm no verity. You need to flash that & RMM state fix. Flash the XSA firmware you want to use. Log into your Samsung account, don't reboot for 168hrs & OEM unlock should appear. Then follow a guide for installing TWRP.

Not recieving OTA.

Hello fellow MiA2 users! I have my MiA2 rooted with Magisk, I've been following the easy steps of unrooting, updating, rerooting to get every other OTA. I then stayed on the March 2019 update for a while and while trying to update it failed too many times, eventually leading for my phone being unable to find updates anymore. I'm on security patch level March 5, 2019 and whenever I check for update it reads "your system is up to date". Is there a place where I can find the files I could flash with fastboot to update my phone without wiping data?. What do you guys recommend me to do to keep my phone updated? Thanks!
Obviously you are unlocked, thus just fastboot-flash desired ROM (latest official is 10.0.13.0, see directly Xiaomi's c.mui.com or here) using "flash_all_except_data.bat" which does not re-flash stock dummy of /data, thus keeping your /data partition. In case you are still hesitating. you can fastboot-boot into TWRP (I prefer "4pda-edition") , make backup of /data and copy it to PC.

Question Update rooted S23

Hi guys, I have rooted S23 base 8/256gb EUX SM-S911B/DS firmware version S911BXXU1AWA6 and I'd like to update to S911BXXU1AWBD firmware version, a new update released a couple of days ago.
I was used to downloading full update package, push manually update through software updater, extract the boot.img, patch it through magisk and flash it through pc to have root after update (no data lost while updating).
Will this work for me on S23? I was using OnePlus 7T before. Or do I have to use Odin to update? (If yes, will I loose my data?)
I'm not quite familiar with Odin tool so I want to be sure. If flashing that patched extracted boot.img won't work I can try installing the TWRP released few days ago in order to root my device, I just want to know how to safely update without loosing my data or bricking the device.
I let my device root by Oneclickroot day after release cause there wasn't any verified safe way to root it myself but when there is now, I'd like to do it myself to safe some money.
THX for any advice
if you still have about 1 - 2 days time I can tell you how it goes with Odin. I also switched from Oneplus to Samsung and will also do it the first time, but I'm still waiting for the update from today in Germany.

use smart switch to make a full back up from your device, then you can try to root it
