Hi, I'm Nate. I got into manipulating devices back when the first iPhone first came out, and I jailbroke it and put Linux on it. I thought it was the coolest thing ever, being able to install packages on there and whatnot.
Now, I have not used an iPhone for over a decade, and have only used Android. I've successfully rooted a few devices, and been stuck in boot loops, logos, etc.
I've learned that if you can get to bootloader mode (or Odin mode) you can usually fix the device, if you have some patience and think about what you're doing.
I've definitely come here a ton to find info on devices I've used over the years, and registered so I could say thanks for a custom ROM that saved my bacon.

I know this might not be th ebst place to ask this question, but asking since this forum has most experience porting android. I trying to compile android for motorola zn5 (a non-touch screen, linux phone). I would like ton know ho to begin. I have downloaded the sdk and git etc.. and would like to get motorola specific files and also to extract the drived (linux) from ZN5 rom so I can use them in android too.
that will be a lot of work, the processor in the phone is not very well known and the Motorola security makes things difficult. there is potential for an openmagx project but ias hasn't started yet. join #openezx on irc.freenode.org if you're interested.
Yes that would be difficult. I used to own a ZN5, it's a shame really that it's closed-source since it runs on a Linux OS, with a decent processor. That would be really amazing though if you could get android running! I don't think the development community really exists for it though.

I am interested also! I just bought a ZN5 off of Ebay, as I was trying to find a phone to replace my Kaiser. I originally thought I had to find a non-smartphone in order to escape AT&T's mandate for data plans, but did some reading today and discovered you can get a data block. Not sure if it can be done for all phones, but I've had my Kaiser/Tilt for 3 years now...so I figure it is worth a shot.
Anyhow, I am anxious to use the ZN5.

I've been playing with Cyanogen 5.0.5.3 and more recently, 5.0.6.1-testing with the new .33.2 Undervolted/Overclocked/Extra RAM kernel. Everything is very snappy compared to stock and I couldn't be happier

I'm going to recommend that you NOT ROOT YOUR N1.
Stick with the un-rooted phone for as long as you can.
First determine WHY you want to root.
Do you know shell scripting? You know much/little about Unix/Linux? Are you a power user? Are you an iPhone iBasher?
I've rooted and unlocked all of my HTC phones for the past few years, because I know what I'm doing. I read and read and read, searched searched searched these forums for reasons why I should or shouldn't do this or that.
You are new to these forums. New to Android™.
I say you should play with your new phone for a few months.
Continue reading here about Cyanogen, Modaco, Enomther, apps2sd, rooting, radios, overclocking, etc.
If and when you learn ENOUGH by reading, searching, slimming, and searching and reading some more ... if you feel you want to root your Nexus One - by all means, DO It MAN!

I will tell you why 95% of people want to root on the Nexus One. No need to ask a prospect.
The reason is because they want cyanogenmod!
You advice is poor rooting is child play compared to 360 modding.
N1 modding is key to enjoying ones phone.
I have to admit, I rooted my Nexus right away.
Having said that, I spent almost a year on my G1 without rooting it. At first I didn't know it was an option. After I started reading about it, I started to realize that it was probably a wise thing to do. It then took me a few weeks of reading to figure out what I actually wanted to do to my phone before I took the leap and finally rooted it and installed CM which made my G1 experience exciting again.
I mention all this because I agree with OrganizedFellow. Spend some time getting to know how Android works before rooting and adding new features. It will help you appreciate the hard work of the devs even more when you do put custom ROMs on your phone.
If you can't wait, I recommend CM. As for the radio, if your phone doesn't lose 3G and stays connected like it should, don't worry about changing the radio. I "had" to change my radio to try getting rid of my 3G issues that the phone shipped with.

in contrast, if youre not super comfortable with going through the whole process just dip your toes in the water first by trolling forums and reading, you can after all brick your phone. I agree with organizedfellow, take your time and find out why and what benefits. i have not rooted yet but leaning closer as i read more and find that i really need the tethering in case im stuck with no wireless while out on a job (also the different color trackball would be sweet). Out side of those im pretty happy with everything stock, add to it with the rumors of himem coming in a future ota update i think i will be set....just that damn tethering...
You cant go wrong with any ROM available right now, but I highly suggest you try Enomther's ROM as well.

are you serious? nobody said anything about the comparison of rooting an android device (software) to modding an xbox 360 (hardware).
So by your logic, someone should jump right into modding their console because replacing the engine in a Boeing 747 is harder.
To the OP. Take the advice of those suggesting that you wait. For starters, you can see if your device has any hardware issues. Yes HTC is warrantying unlocked devices but why not avoid that hurdle and sit on your device for a week or three to just be sure. While you do that, you can read all that you can stomach in these forums and plan your best course of attack.

+1 that is some great advice, and I would take it. I was just like you and I last week I rooted my ATT N1. I love it, but I must say that I have put a lot more time into it than I expected. I spent a month before I got the N1 looking into this whole scene and I felt that I had the reasons to root. I would at least spend the time searching forums until all your questions that you have are answered. No body is going to be able to give you a perfect ROM that is for you because there are many different ones out there and what is good for one person may not be the best for another.
I would spend the time to get to know everything before you get going. I would say I know my way around technology pretty well, but if I didn't have the nice folks from this forum I would of had a very hard time with things. When people tell you to "search" they really aren't trying to be rude. To root your phone is a personal choice that only you can make. You are the one that spent the money and people spend a bunch of time making our HTC using lives that much greater.
I spent almost 4 hours last week rooting and unlocking and I have spent easily 30-40 since then learning all that I can learn and I must say that for me it was the right decision because I learned a bunch of things about my phone and now when I have a problem I am comfortable that I can find a way to fix it myself. If I don't then I know where to turn to "search" for help.
If you have any questions I would love to help you out although I am far from a master at this trade. I spent a bunch of time and I have a whole notebook of printouts that I have found in various places all over the web (especially this site) I would be more than happy to send them to you, but just do yourself a huge favor and research, research, research, research, and then when you feel you are done research some more. It will help you in the long run.

By the way I am running the latest Cyanogen and a few other things. I am having a blast with .apk like the HTC keyboard, and I must say that for me wireless tethering is the greatest thing in the world. I have only touched the very end of this world, and I am so thankful for all the people out there that spend countless hours making our lives a lot easier. I had a bunch of help last week and people really didn't need to spend the time to help me out. I have also messed around with the latest Modaco Sense ROM and I like that a lot as well.
Hello all! I jump from phone to phone when ever I can catch a broken one to fix for nearly free. I recently ran into an HTC HD 7 and am not really vibing to the windows mobile 7, and from what I read there is not currently a pre made rom available for installing android on this device. I am pretty technologically advanced and feel confident given the right direction on how to accomplish this I would be capable of creating one. I have read a lot of information but am some what lost mainly because of some of the lingo terminology, being that I haven't hacked/developed outside of the ios platform. I can program in just about any c based language. Any one got ne thing that can help me out here? If I build one how would I install it or go about uploading it to the device? Thanks in advance for any replies I do greatly appreciate all your time! I apologize about the noobness like I said ios is whats been available to me for the past few years, and now I want android like a kid wants candy!!!

Developers/programmers have been trying to figure out how to dual boot the HD7 (like the HD2) since it came out. The main problem seems to be how WP7 is compiled .NET and C#. WP7 securitys still aren't fully unlocked.
Take a look at the Project Haret thread, they seem to be making some progress at it and if you have the know how, maybe you can contribute.

Thanks for the heads up, appreciate the reply, btw where is the thanks button? sorry this is my second post here. I started to do some research into it. I believe the answer is in the coredll.dll file which may be stating the obvious. I think the way to go about accessing this or at least what I am going to try is an attempt to gain root access with my device tethered to my comp from terminal.

Your welcome! I've read through the whole Project Haret thread and there is alot of information, (some way to complicated for me) trial and error and it looks like as of recent there has been some good progress towards getting Haret to perform and (hopefully) run kernel mode and actually boot the kernel. You might be right, give it a shot or maybe put it on the thread and see what kind of feed back you get on it!
Is your device unlocked yet so that you can gain access to it and try it out?
Personally I would love to see the HD7 dual boot WP7 and Android. Don't get me wrong... I thoroughly enjoy WP7 and love my HD7it's very smooth, fast, stable and not once has it crashed on me. I believe that it would bring a longer life experience to the device and make it that much more versatile, especially since we're nearing the end of official support.

Ok so I realize I might sound like an idiot considering everything I said can be found within the haret documentation. I originally read something found on google with inaccurate information after you told me about the project, come to find out the information I read was in no way affiliated with the the actual project haha. Forgive my stupidy, I began to read and follow along the documaton for it at htc-linux.org, the only thing I am having issue with is obtaining haretconsole to explore the device. The link on the documentation I believe no longer exists, and I can't find a source anywhere! This is pretty good stuff though thanks for linking me up with it! Have you installed the development tools or haretconsole on a linux OS by chance? I was successful with the developement tools, just need to figure out this haretconsole problem. BTW which desktop OS do you prefer?

I then registered my device but don't see a single difference or maybe I just am doing something wrong. How do you suggest going about that(unlocking it that is, I don't care about it being official, just figured official would be easlier)? Also for the iPhone there is a desktop application which allows you to access the filesystem called iFunBox, is there anything similar for the wp7?

For the most part I strongly strongly dislike anything related to microsoft, but unfortunately I have to work with the windows platform quite often because of my job. There just such a dirty/shady/grimmy company period, I saw a commercial yesterday advertising bing where they claimed 2 out of three people choose bing over google in a blind study............how can they advertise that when they stole googles code! lol. Also it was a pretty dirty business move of microsoft to do what your talking about with the wp8. They claim there going to continue support on 7 but we both know they all say that and do put the effort towards the legacy system for a short period of time before cutting it. Screwing Nokia out of major growth potential within the U.S. while going back on the promise made to them regarding free upgrades to 8 for 7 devices. I think they feel like there invincible just because they currently run the desktop OS market share. I think their will likely be a major change in the preferred OS within the next 10 years, just because I work in an 30,000 user enterprise that refuses to upgrade their liscensing with microsoft because of windows 8's inability to meet our needs.

Sorry its taken me so long to get back with you... Been crazy busy!
Unfortunetly I only have Windows OS, PC and Laptop. Funny enough though, I just got my laptop back from the shop a couple weeks ago and I had to have the harddrive replaced. Last week my PC got the BSOD (blue screen of death) and I had to completly wipe and restore it.
My next computer will be a Linux OS forsure. I wish I had one currently to install Haret and play around with it!
The student registration is limited and you can only sideload a max of 3 unasigned apps. You would be better off to fully unlock your device and install a custom rom, this will give you more options to sideload as many unasighned apps as you want in the form of XAP's through IE. Access to the registry/file system and to apply hack and tweaks. you can then familurize yourself with the OS and file system.
I can help walk you through the unlock process, it's pretty easy.
Go to settings, about, more info. post back all the information from that screen. Enter your device into bootloader mode - Power device off, hold down the volume down button and power the device back on, while continuing to hold down the volume down button, this will bring you into BL mode a tri-colored screen. Post back the information from that screen also.We can go from there. The proccess to unlock it basicially is to downgrade the SPL to 3.xxx or lower to install RSPL/HSPL wich will allow flashing of a custom rom.
My IE works excellent. It might be due to what build version that your device is running on. Either way once we get it unlocked there's custom roms running on Tango 8779 build with nice features and the device runs buttery smooth. there's also more mobile browsers available to install once it's unlocked, Opera Mobile,UC browser and a bunch more. There's all kinds of XAP's you can install to cusromize the device and enhance the user experience.
Totaly agree with you on the Android development for WP7 and the above statement regarding MS

Hi everyone, I'm a longtime lurker and user of this site and thought I should go ahead and join. I have learned everything I know about unlocking phones and changing or replacing roms from this forum, though I would still be considered a beginner compared to most of you. I have done a few things following the instructions posted for others here. I'm a long time computer, laptop, tablet and phone tech, and electronic engineer and very interested in expanding my knowledge on phones, especially android. And I have come to hate AT&T from what I've read about their bootlockers. I'll never get another AT&T model phone again.

Trying to learn how to do more things with android phones. I never really had an interest in learning about them until I got one of my old phones back and wanted the videos and photos back and throughout my search to find a way to do this I've picked up an interest in learning more. Haven't accomplished anything besides downloading a bunch of stuff onto my laptop that doesn't work. So I decided to join xda cause I realize it's not something that's easily learned with no help.
