The proximity sensor realy sux on rhis phone, it always turn on when i have the phone on the ear, and there is no fix for it.
I am realy thinking about selling the phone is so anoying!!!
I have same problem, still hope that an update will fix.
The proximity sensor on these devices are ultrasonic rather than infrared. They either use this method to save space or because of issues of "seeing" through the screen, although there are infrared proximity sensors that work behind the display.
They work by emitting a high frequency sound (too high for us to hear) from the earpiece and then listening for that sound in the microphone, and by working out how loud the sound is and what delay there is they can work out if the phone is up against our head, but they are not as accurate or reliable as infrared sensors.
The proximity sensor is only activated when the phone is in a vertical position as it would be being held to the ear. If it isn't very reliable it might be worth calibrating the compass as this may help the device knowing which way up it is.
It works okay on my device.
Hope that helps.
Use "call proximity sensor fix"..I have same trouble my rom is EU Vodafone.
It doesn't have a hardware proximity sensor, Xiaomi use ai to make virtual sensor. I don't know how it work but it really sick.

No, screen still turn to black even i covered front cam with masking tape.
I think they use gyroscope for motion detect.

I know that is not a camera but I mean that will be beter to use it for turning off during calling. That was the way of working of the normal sensor in other phones.

They can't use the camera as a hardware sensor as it uses a lot of power, not necessarily the sensor itself, but the imaging system on the SoC needs to be powered up, and it is a lot of data being processed just to try and use it as a proximity sensor.
True proximity sensors use a pulsing infrared LED and an infrared sensor, and the infrared bouncing back from something in close proximity can be detected, and this is very reliable.
Because the screen only has a small hole for the camera with narrow bezels, the proximity sensor has to be placed behind the OLED display, and Xiaomi for some reason has not gone down this route on this device. It is possible to have a normal proximity sensor behind the screen and for it to be tuned to work, as many devices do this already, but perhaps for cost or licencing reasons or to save space behind the screen they have not done this.
As far as I'm aware, the proximity sensor is a virtual sensor by detecting if the phone is held vertically, and using an Ultrasonic sound from the speaker being picked up by the microphone, it attempts to work out if near a face or not. If you hold your phone such that it isn't vertical against your face, the sensor will likely assume the phone is not against a face and so will not turn off the display.
On my 11t pro i did not see problem with sensor
I have the same problem....i think ill sell that phone...
Xiaomi is using ultrasonic proximity sensors on majority of their phones. Some users experience issues with it, some don't.
It all comes down to how you hold your phone while talking.
Selling this **** phone, so mad at the sensor ****, wtf is this, if Xiaomi cant fix it with the software then its useless.
Is it ok for the consumer to pay money for a phone that is crappy, i will not take that ****....
When I moved to miui eu The problem is gone, I don't know what is the cause of the problem in the original system, perhaps you have googled to contact
wait, i thought 11T and 11T Pro did have a hardware proximity sensor?
usually kimovil differentiates between 'proximity sensor' and 'ultrasonic-proximity' which they also did with these 2 devices. kimovil is the first thing i check if i see a new phone i like.

This app has fixed this issue for me. Just set permissions and then all sorted. I stopped notifications because I don't like the permanent notification showing its running, but that's personal preference.
Have that app instaled, it helps but it still turns on the screen when i use the phone..

I assume it's a refresh rate issue on the screen, lights are constantly flickering I got some cool super slow mo videos of lights on holiday, they are a constant red light but clearly not, I assume that's all you're seeing on the camera as well

Hi Dave. In your video that is screen refresh rate because of heavy music and lights i beleive.
But in my P20 Unit it is issue in camera. I mean even if im in my room with two three lights, it gets all black lines everytime and photos, videos taken are so bad.
It is ruining my moments and im disappointed.
I have tested s9+ and Iphone X under same environment but they both work fine and no black lines at all.

Check your settings, and try with the 60fps option on and off
It might have something to do with the refresh rate of the camera and how it's set, try changing it and see if it changes something, for me it worked

How can we change the refresh rate of camera. Im not sure we can do it on mobile.
its not about display refresh rate.
You can change between 60fps an not 60fps resolutions
Changing between this resolutions is the only change I have seen

I doubt this is a hardware issue because it's more related to the refresh rates of the lighting which happens to synch with the shuttertime of the camera. It causes visible banding across the display. It will happen with all cameras, even DSLR's if you match the shuttertime to the frequency of which the lights refresh.

Yes you are right. This is some hardware issue. But the things is this problem is not present on any Iphone and Samsung. I have tested many samsung phones and iphone x. They all handle lights pretty good but huawei fails at this.
Trust me photos and videos get ruined and you see black and white lines on the picture.
Its just annoying that such expensive phone can't handle lights flickering like cheap samsung phones and old iphones.
Just search Google pixel 2 screen flicker on youtube/google and you'll see what im talking about.

Tried it but doesnt work
No, you misunderstood my comment.
Usually this phenomena happens for the reasons i described. It happens on my $6000+ DSLR camera too and the only way to get around it is to change the shutter speed to a different one which does not synchronize with the refresh rates of the light sources. It's not a malfunctioning hardware, it's more like a limitation which can be worked around by either software hacks or shutter adjustments. Although changing the shutter speed might not work as expected with the type of electronic shutters we have in these mobile devices.
Just because you haven't seen the effect on the other devices you mentioned doesn't mean the issues don't exist there. This is a common issue on cameras with electronic shutters such as phone cameras, and even more so when you use auto settings under certain circumstances.

Hi. I have the exact same problem. Were u able to solve the problem?
It's the LED lights that is an issue. It flickers a lot faster than the human eye can see.. but the P20 will pick that up. To get around that, go to Pro and lower the ISO and increase the shutter. It works for me.. the longer the shutter, the more evened out the flickering becomes and it won't be an issue. The LG V20 has manual video and I was able to get around that, but P20 Pro doesn't have manual mode for video.
I bought 9t pro 5 days ago. Every day since then at about 7 pm and until morning my fingerprint scanner practically stops working. I've seen about 3 other mentions of this on the internet so far. I thought it was because of night/reading more since it's when it starts, but even with disabled reading mode the issue still remains.
Does anyone else have this?
Also getting this. 9T Pro too.
Funnily enough can trigger it by just changing date/time in settings. Screen hue changes slightly perhaps related to that.
Anyhow once my unlock comes thru in 4 days time I'm off to Pixel Experience so will live with it til then!
Did you try registering the fingerprint once more in the evening? Try this and report back.

Yeah I added my thumb an extra two times yesterday evening (have left thumb x2 and right thumb cx3). Didn't help.
Haven't tried registering thumb in diff orientations but the diff between fingerprint recog at night (even w lights on) and during the day is very stark.
I got better results unlocking my phone when I pressed my finger slightly harder into the screen. You really want the ridges to be directly on the screen. I've been used to the oneplus 5 where a light touch was all I needed.
Are you perhaps changing your identity after 7? Are you living two lives? These kinds of physical changes can account for a phone not recognizing it's master. Vigilantism is a crime you guys! Be careful with what you talk about. Lose lips sink ships and the white rabbit can be rabid at times so, it's not good for your health to follow it all the time. Perhaps the phone is punishing you? If I was stuffed in a pocket frequently, I'd probably fuss around 7pm and start retaliating. Little inconveniences like forcing you to tap your access code rather than reading your fingerprint is perhaps vindicating for that poor suffocating phone. Maybe if you change fabric softeners to something it likes, it won't have issues being placed in your pocket? Or maybe it's just hot in there. You could try placing something cold in your pocket with the phone (don't forget the change in fabric softener! This is important!) and your phone will feel more comfortable.

Do you wash your hands around that time? I can't do finger scan after I wash my hands.
Try disabling auto brightness and change it to more brighter, in low light conditions the screen tends to be very dark.
I bought a P30 a week ago, and two things drive me nuts. First of all the optimizer, which is obviously not artificially intelligent, since I have said countless times that I don't mind if Snapchat is using power. Without that I'd never hear from my daughter... Is there a way to stopp Optimizer completely, or at least block the alerts?
And talking about alerts, there's the standard alert sound coming every few minutes as long as I have my BT plugs (I'm using Sony WF-1000XM3's) connected. But there's never anything in the alert panel. I wonder if it can be because of another useless piece of [email protected] information, in English I am guessing it's called "Device connection - Active audio device" or something like that. I can click a wheel to the right in that and get a box that lets me choose between audio from the plugs and the device, but why should I? I can turn of the plugs to get the tragically bad sound from the vibrating screen!
So can anybody give me a tip about this? On my previous Samsung I'd just use a root function to fix it, but that's not as easy on this phone since it seems just about unrootable without a lot of extra hassle.

Made the same move from S9 > P30, battery life is extremely good compared although I miss the Samsung experience so am looking at the S20 Ultra now
That one's far too expensive. Not that I can't afford it, just that I can't justify it. The cheaper models have worse cameras then the P30, that's why I bought that for about half the price of a S20 Ultra. I'd rather buy another pair of ceiling speakers for my Atmos system! And I see hat you came from Samsung in your sig. Btw the latest software to the S20 was apparently so buggy they couldn't reivew the S20 in Norway!

Oh I have sigs disabled, I`ll have to remove it
The only reason I want the Ultra is the new 108MP sensor the others won't have, I have always gone for the standard model as the Pro/Plus models weren't worth the extra to me, bigger screen/battery and one extra lens wasn't enough for the extra cost, but I really enjoy photography which is also the reason I got this P30, few things missing vs the S9, like true 960fps slow mo, and I used to take a lot of shots of my dog running about, with the S9 they almost always came out sharp and clear, the P30 seems unable to take clear shots of moving objects, most pics come out blurred, also the RYYB sensor tinting everything yellow gets a bit tedious
It takes a great photo for scenery etc, low light is amazing so hopefully the Ultra can match / beat that
While EMUI doesn't give you the option to completely disable the persistent Device Connection Service notification when you have a Bluetooth audio device connected, I managed to create a workaround using Macrodroid:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
This macro will be triggered whenever the Device Connection Service notification appears and will immediately dismiss the notification without letting it re-appear after whatever time limits EMUI usually sets. The result is a clean notification centre without this persistent banner getting in the way. If this doesn't work, change the trigger to Connectivity > Bluetooth Event > Device Connected > [your headphones here].
Have had my S21 Ultra for a couple of days, now. All good, except for one thing - my proximity sensor does not seem to work. I have tried a couple of sensor test apps and they confirm that it is not working.
Have I done something really stupid with settings (always possible !) ? Or do I maybe just have a defective phone ?
Any suggestions as to what I can do to resolve this ? Don't want to have to send the phone back !
Many thanks in advance.
Sorry for the blatant bump, but keen to know if anyone has any thoughts on this. Has anyone else experienced problems with the proximity sensor on the S21 Ultra ?

You're welcome. Someone here very well may have a fix but it should have been right leaving the factory.
At least it's an obvious constant issue. Intermittents ones are the stuff nightmares are made of
Are you sure it has a proximity sensor? I dont see it in the specs on GSM arena. Also I installed CPUZ and looked at the sensors tab and it doesn't show any value for proximity sensor. I dont think the S21 ultra comes with a proximity sensor. There's only a camera on the front rest all of it is screen right?

It does. Not sure where but it needs that input to function properly.

I don't recommend a factory reset unless you did a firmware update. Find to root cause otherwise it will likely reoccur.
Check all relevant settings and disable all power management.
Clear system cache on the boot menu.
Try a hard reboot (not reset).
Try in Safe mode.
It may be purely hardware... especially if it did this out of the box.

Test apps apart, if the phone call screen doesn't turn off when you put the phone to your ear, then there's definitely a problem. Especially that there's no special setting which can completely block the proximity sensor.
If you suspect a misconfiguration, then a factory reset can probably help.

The clock on a clean return is ticking. If a factory reset clears it but it returns after 10 days the return option is gone. Be stuck right where he started with less options.
It could be something added after unboxed or not... tough call.
File corruption can indicate a bigger issue maybe a bad flash or hardware. I find it troubling that's it's on a completely hidden basic function.
I would error heavily on the side of caution.
Aside from a boot loop (2x) I never -needed*- a factory reset to solve any Android issue.
Most techs go with the reset nuke option because it's easiest fix for them not you. The root cause is still there waiting to be triggered again... been there, done that.
*excluding the been there thing (that 10+ was returned but the replacement did the same thing; it was a settings glitch), one reload due to possible virus infection and OS refreshes for heavy abused loads.
Hello
I dial *#0*# and under widget sensor it doesent even says proximity sensor.
Can somebody check if they have the same?
Sorry for not getting back earlier - yesterday was a tough day at work !
@Tine21 - I agree that it doesn't reference a Proximity Sensor, but everything that I am reading online is that the S21 Ultra definitely has one.
I eventually got in touch with EE and asked for a replacement. Have to say, they were excellent and I had a courier the next day arrive, pick up my old handset and deliver me a brand new one. Having tested this out, it definitely shots off the screen when I am on the phone and I put the phone to my ear, so there absolutely has to be a Proximity Sensor and, with the new handset, this is working fine.
Sadly, I can't get the "wave to phone to wake screen" functionality working, but that is a minor issue. Also, bizarrely, the sensor test apps that I am trying do not pick up any movement on the sensor at all. No idea whether this is the fault of the apps or what, but seems a little odd.
The main thing is that the screen goes off when I pick up a call and put the phone to my ear, so that is good enough for me right now. Might look into the "wave" functionality later.
Many thanks to @blackhawk and all the others for help and advice - this is why we all love XDA forums so much !
@wilsojer Great that you fixed your problem
I was reading a lot about it and apparently, with these new infinity O screens, a lot of people have problems with proximity sensor
I think that screen ON/OFF function during calls works with front camera, gyroscop and touchscreen like on samsung 20FE
That is why you dont get any response from sensor app, but this is only my opinion
I am afraid, there is no Proximity Sensor in the s21*. The phone detects the "answering call to the ear" gesture by using 3D accelerometer(s). Try to answer the call while laying down on the sofa or slow moving the phone to the ear - the screen will remain active and your ear will press everything on the touchscreen..
Hope I am wrong.
@78apb What you say would make sense as to why I can't get any of the sensor apps to recognise it, but if you go to Samsung's own website (https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/galaxy-s21-ultra-5g/specs/) and go about 2/3's of the way down the page to the "Sensors and Buttons" section, it definitely states that it has a Proximity Sensor.
@wilsojer then it should be in *#0*# menu, but it doesnt...
@78apb - yes, I quite agree. Think I might try and take this up with Samsung direct - and, no, I won't be holding my breath for a reply ;-)

I think you are right I dont see the proximity sensor at all and if i put my hand covering the whole upper screen it still doesnt turn off the screen, so i think it depends also on acceloremeter and gyrometer
I found something that maybe will help us. If you dial *#77692# you will go directly in to the proximity sensor menu and you will see that it is turn OFF. You can turn it ON and it is working but in a few second will go OFF again and i dont know why. But at least we know it is there and it is working.
My Mi 11 Ultra is acting wired from two weeks ago. The Display is getting automatically off without even I'm going near to Ear. To WhatsApp Audio messages also when start to listen the auto the screen is getting off. I tried maximum possible to clean the phones upper part but still same. Please anyone help me how to fix this issue.
Sorry for my Bad English.
Thank You..

Well, I have exactly the same problem, but only with WhatsApp, Viber works as it should. Once I tried rubbing the upper part of the display (where all the sensors are) and it seemed to work, albeit just for a while.
What other apps do you have problems with?
Probably like Xiaomi Mi 11- Mi11 Ultra doesn't have psychical proximity sensor, it has virtual proximity sensor made by Elliptic Labs, so some apps can be acting wired or Virtual Proximity sensor is not yet optimized for them.
Xiaomi Mi 11 does not use a physical (hardware) sensor for proximity, but an algorithm studied by Elliptic Labs which uses speakers and microphone.

Sadly it's a mess. It works so bad, most of my calls are with a screen on and sometimes it turns off when I don't want it to. It works worse than any phone I have ever used.
Same here, no fix and it's horrible... Makes me think if i ever going to buy Xiaomi again

I had same in early first xiaomi.eu stable releases, but after all I see improvements over time, it's not perfect but better than before. At least my screen is off most of the calls,

It's a huge duckup in a flagship phone. Sometime I wonder if Xiaomi has QA at all.
For example: open pro mode in the camera, change only the EV to -0.3. now change lens to the ultra wide. Basically you need to change the EV every time you change lens..it's silly.
