Hi all,
Just bought a shiny new Mi Mix for use in the UK.
I have installed UK google play and Android Pay but frustratingly it doesn't want to work.
"Android pay cannot be used on this device. This may be because your device is rooted, has an unlocked bootloader or is running a custom ROM. As a result, Google can't confirm that your device meets Android pays security standards"
The device is not rooted.
Has anyone else found a fix ?
Grateful for any help!!
Not rooted, but does it have an unlocked Bootloader?
My import from China worked with Android Pay (and Barclays Pay) in the UK when I first bought it, but having unlocked the bootloader to put the EU Rom onto it, Android Pay no longer works, with the exact same message.
Oddly, Barclays still works fine.
TBH, Android Pay hardly worked with any of my cards, so I wasn't THAT concerned anyway. Still use my iPhone for most contactless stuff as all my cards work with that system.

It maybe if you relock the bootloader it will work, check if bootloader is unlocked.
"fastboot oem device-info"
Think it will only work on Chinese stable.
I'm not that fussed with Android Pay not working - Barclays does, and Android Pay didn't work on all but 1 of my cards.
Also having used the EU ROM, I wouldn't go back to Chinese version.
Hopefully OP might find it helpful though.
Flash the official china ROM. The one that you have are unofficial ROM (if I can't say fake rom).
Seems to be working on mine, official china rom.
I'm on the official Global Rom and locked my bootloader. The app will finally allow me to add credit cards no problem. But the app won't launch or pay for anything near a terminal that accepts android pay. I unlock the phone, hold it to next to the terminal and nothing.
Anyone else have success on paying for anything?

I had this when i set up my bank card to use with the underground. You have to go to NFC section and change "Secure element position" to using HCE wallet.

Thanks. I've switched it over from embedded secure element to this and will give it a shot.
So after the latest Global Rom update, 8.2.5.0 MAHMIDL, android pay is broken again. NFC activates, vibrates, but i can't get it to process anything. it just keeps looping.
Is anyone else having this problem? I also uninstalled and reinstalled the android pay app. Thanks.

You need to check whether it passes the safety net check. I've used stock rom with android pay before and it always fails after a rom update.

It passed. I also got an android pay update yesterday so I'll find out next time I use it again. Ugh.
Yup, still doesn't work. I've removed the credit card and added it back no problem. But whenever I use android pay to actually pay for something, i just get a rotating circle that doesn't seem to want to connect to a server I'm guessing.
Exactly the same here. Have tried everything. Currently I am on a developer rom. It doesn't work. Got a mi6 2 weeks ago and it is a similar story. Android pay works at all 7/11 as it seems but nowhere else. Drives me crazy. It is really too bad. Wish I could just use the NFC feature both phones have. Based out of Singapore btw.

I contacted google and they asked me to send them a report, but it looks like Xiaomi disabled this option in their build of the Global ROM. I'm lost and not sure what to do. Maybe I should install android pay from 3 versions ago and see if that helps.
Also, I can't ever get my Region to be anything other than Poland while I'm in the US. There are a bunch of other tiny issues that I've reported bugs about but Xiaomi seems to ignore.
Just paid for my breakfast with Android pay. On Resurrection Remix, dragonxia kernel, and I flashed the universal Xiaomi safetynet fix for Magisk. Go to Magisk settings, enable magiskhide, reboot, and safetynet passed.
Greetings from germany,
a buddy of mine got a Note 8 from a shady seller and it turned out that it had a custom rom:
Basisbandversion: N950FXXU1AQHB
Kernel-Version: 4.4.13-theGreatDream-v1.0.0
[email protected] #1
But he couldn't do any updates with it and quite a few apps didn't work because they said: "device is rooted and because of security policy etc..." (crudely translated from german)
such as the samsung and banking apps.
So we tried to go with the guide on how to flash and restore the device to stock firmware with odin.
For that i downloaded the N950FXXU1AQH9 version which is for the region germany and that seemed to be the most reasonable choice in the vast variety of approx. 200 available versions.
We did everything exactly as described in the guide and everything seemed to work perfectly. Updates were working again and also the banking app worked.
But the day after he wanted to try the Samsung Health app and it reported to not work because "security policy, can't open on a rooted device" (crudely translated from german again)
and others like the banking app also stopped working and reported the same.
Although we installed the N950FXXU1AQH9 version it now says in the softwareinformation that N950FXXU2BQKG is installed Oo
Strangely he also tried some apps to root/unroot like superSU etc. and they all told him "your device isn't rooted"
So regular apps tell "can't work because device is rooted" and root apps tell "can't unroot because device isn't rooted"
So i ask humbly: where is the error in this mess? What shall we do to make this device into a perfectly funtioning unrooted freshly fabricated note 8 again?
Thanks in advance

I think that once rooted and Knox has been triggered the banking apps and certainly Samsung Pay will never work! I'm not thinking of rooting my SM-N9500 (I don't think I can anyway as it's Snapdragon), I used to root to get rid of adverts but Samsung have an app for that!
Sent from my SM-N9500 using Tapatalk
Once KNOX hasa been tripped its a can't be restored... You might b able to trick some of the apps into working by using a custom kernel but secure folder and KNOX are gone like the dinosaurs...
You should be able to find out about the custom kernels & how to flash by doing some reading.

I agree with this, I know that once rooted, some apps will not work anymore on that particular device, regardless of what you will plan on doing with that device.
knox is tripped.
the phone has most likely been successfully unrooted, but rooting it permanently makes alterations to a chip on the motherboard.
some apps will never trust this phone again, unless you can hide the knox fuse status.
so to get full use of the phone again you'll have to root it again and look into some root hiding apps/mods.
unfortunately I can't help you any further with that, I haven't rooted a knox-enabled device since the note 2.
Firstly thanks for all the enlightening answers. Now we are getting a bit closer.
I have just started with those topics on modding (rooting) of smartphones a few days ago and none of the guides i read mentioned anything about knox.
But yeah everything is gonna be more complex than anticipated. I will have to start digging deeper into this matter and try out a lot more of modded kernels and root hiding tools etc. to restore funtionality.
I will keep you updated on my progress... or lack of it :]
puzzlednerd said:
On another matter: The guy that "sold" my buddy this Note 8 seemed to be very eager to give it to him. At first he made an offer on local ebay and said that he didn't want his note 8 because it is rooted and modded etc.
My buddy made an agreement with him to exchange his older less worth samsung, which was all original and unrooted, for the sellers note 8. The seller complied although the difference in worth was approx. 250 Euro.
My buddy was happy that he made great deal... at first...
Later we found out that the same seller is selling my buddies old phone on local ebay again and surprise surprise it's rooted and modded again and offered for a much smaller price than what it's worth.
Now... is it possible to root and hack those phones with lets say... keyloggers and give them to unsuspected customers that enter all their account data and banking information?
Otherwise i have no idea why this seller is practically almost giving them away for nothing and is rooting formerly unrooted devices and sells them with the point that he doesn't want rooted devices and losing money with every trade.

Hey im new to Samsung phones and got an S10+ preordered. Will I be able to flash TWRP and Magisk the day I get it or will it take some time? Also is there anything special about rooting Samsung phones?
Thank you for your answers!
I would not expect for immediately. Devs need to reverse engineer/hack their way around the firmware locks to attain root and keep the device bootable. Once they do that, the devices are ours. though I cannot imagine it would be too different from the 9 series with flash counters and such not.
Edit: Typos.

You will loose Samsung Pay, secure folders and banking apps probably won't work. There is more but that's all that comes to mind right now. Uninstalling root and flashing everything to stock won't fix the lost apps either, it's permanent. I think it will reset your phone too.
Root
Banking apps will work once able to flash Magisk, simply using a system-less root method will allow for work arounds such as Magisk hide etc. which will definitely allow for such apps to work. Exactly as has been seen for the past few generations of devices using Magisk! Anyway... on another note, yes bootloader will very likely be unlockable on Exynos variants allowing for TWRP and custom rom installation but highly unlikely on Snapdragon variants.

Yes because the past root methods trip knox and blow a efuse witch is not reversible. Unless a different root method is discovered this phone will be no different. As the post says above there are some workarounds but that is not a guarantee. Some apps can not be fooled.

Hi!
Can anyone tell me what do I need to downgrade from Android 9 to Android 8 without rooting my Note 8?
I have Odin 3.13.1, also I found original firmware on Samsmobile - PDA N950FXXS5CRK4 and CSC N950FMSR5CRHA
Currently installed is N950FXXU5DSC2
Do I need anything else?
Do I need first to do factory reset and then revert back to Oreo or it can be done straight away?
I don't like Pie because call recording doesn't work. I already knew that, but some users reported that it still working on their devices after Pie update, so I wanted to try myself.
Call recording is one of the features that I use every day and I need it, but I'm using Samsung pay, so I can't root my device.
Thanks!

You don't need anything else, I believe. The firmware you found will be able to downgrade to Oreo, so you're in luck.
Downgrading and going back to Oreo via Odin might potentially factory reset your device which includes formatting your internal storage. Just be aware of that and backup all your files and important stuff.
Yes, I know that internal storage can be formatted
I asked just to check myself, because I didn't do anything for years, since I had Note 1 [emoji16]
Thanks!

Please tell me.
Have you downgraded from PIE to Oreo. I'm also interested to downgraded from PIE to Oreo due to below mention reason.
After updating to PIE, i'm note able to use hybrid sim slot on my Galaxy Note 8. When i insert hybrid in Galaxy note 8 Pie, POPUP appears says sim card tray slot problem, but phone has read both behind and memory card. Pop does not get disable and stuck on the screen. Forcefully i need to remove the slot and reverse back to 1 sim and MC
I downgrade to this version n950fxxs5csb3 without problem, all working perfect and in this version dont have the update notification to pie
Just make sure to full wipe your device and use de csc file, not the home scs; by that way will make a full erase into the proces to device

You are stuck with that bootloader. No way around it.
Yes you can still root. Just make sure you know what you will lose by doing so, like Samsung pay and secure folder, will never ever get these back as it trips the Efuse (it would require a motherboard replacement to fix)
Thanks for the advice. I really want the phone recording capability back that got disabled with the Pie update. You wouldn't happen to know of a workaround to make phone recording work again on Android 9?

If you're going to root and have to factory reset your device anyway, you might as well flash a custom ROM. I would recommend Dr. Ketan's ROM. It's pretty good with very little to no problems, and has call recording added by default and enabled.

Depends on the custom rom
If it is a note rom, then all spen features are still intact
If it's a s9 rom for example, then not.

It does work,tried it,used INS.
Only thing was there was no 'choice' to do a recording.
You either have to record all or just certain numbers.
There was no 'start' recording button,at least not in the rom I used,stock/standard default UK rom.
May be it is different feature if flash different rom or different csc like THL maybe?
Also inserting and booting with a sim that has call recording feature,INS-India,THL-Thailand works.
Basically does the same as the link.
I also flashed oreo but couldn't stop the update nag so just let it update back to pie.

Despite what Reaper1337 said, all ROMs are based on the stock Note 8 firmware, which means all the included SPen functions and features are intact and working. You can't flash S9 ROMs to the Note 8 and I'm not aware of any ROMs that were directly ported from the S9, thereby removing SPen features. All ROMs that are "S9 ports" just bring certain apps and things from the S9 over while still keeping the base Note 8 features intact.
In short: all ROMs will work like the stock firmware, with the exception of the one project which's name I forgot that's essentially stock Android. But it's incompletely and terribly unstable and buggy, so I wouldn't suggest that anyway.

Unfortunately that is for exynos. Not sure how many people need to know how to systemlessly root an exynos. Full root might be more useful for exynos users but good ol' snapdragon has everyone in a pickle (most everyone.)

Yeah almost every phone is rootable but it will either cost money or if you've updated your firmware then you'll have to wait until they figure out how to get past it, assuming they do, they always have just takes time. If you have updated your firmware you can look in to selling your device and buying one that hasn't been updated. I can give you more pointers on how to find phones that haven't been updated for cheap but that's only if your interested and no I'm not selling anything.

Oh really. So then why does snapdragon lock the bootloader while exynos doesn't? Not to mention a root that works on exynos won't necessarily work on snapdragon. I thought this was fairly well known.

magisk doesn't have different versions for different devices and it's been the standard root method for a few years now. since version 22 how it works has changed for all new phones.
I'm on a snapdragon that didn't have a locked bootloader because that's only done in the US market (at the request of or to please US carriers I'm guessing). SM-G780 is a model number of the Exynos S20FE... SM-G781 is the Qualcomm, they both use the exact same method to obtain root.

I didn't see your other post. I'm not really in to getting in to these debates online not really my thing but I still use full root myself and systemless as well. They both have their pros and cons. I suppose I prefer to edit system files myself to overclock the device instead of depending on an app to do it for me.
There are lots of people still using full root. I think a long time in terms of electronics can be hard to pinpoint. I've used full root way more times than I've used systemless but I guess that's just because I've been doing it for a long time. I know some linux phones you can buy don't come with systemless root but only come with full root and they don't make systemless root phones off the shelf like they do full root for a reason. To each their own.
google and OEMs have made messing around with the system partition harder, it's read only now and overlays are how edits are mostly done. plus there are more apps that won't run if root is detected, systemless gives you the chance to evade that detection if you want it.
CF-autoroot is pretty much dead, the superSU app is owned by a private company and Chainfire had moved on.

Oh thanks for the info. Yeah I've definitely used systemless. I did like it but of course there's nothing like doing it yourself. Although I rooted phones back in the day I've also used Magisk though I could've swore I was able to use vi and edit system files that would've been unreadable and definitely unwritable but I'm pretty sure I just changed the mount of whatever it was I was working on from ro to rw with 'mount -o remount,rw /' I'm to lazy to pull up Magisk I think I have it on a tablet somewhere. I probably also changed the file permissions with chmod or chown then chmod but I think there are some files you can't change using systemless now that I think about it hence the name systemless I dunno it's been awhile since I messed around with rooted phones.
After awhile you realize how vulnerable the device is after root and then when you think you can trust these apps that have root access then someone announces they found "_______" app pulling user information... I'm definitely not referring to any apps used anymore but it was the app people used before they used Magisk and it pretty much did the same thing but I wouldn't be surprised if newer root apps did the same.
Wait you said since SDK 22? Was systemless even around then? I don't think it was. I know it's been around for awhile but not that long.
I did find out something pretty funny when this guy was rooting people's phones and he had a contact in China... I was determined to find out who this Chinaman was. Well I don't think I should really say out of respect because he clearly didn't want people to know where he was from but yeah I guess I'll have to keep that to myself but it was pretty funny to say the least.
Also this was before rona so him being from wherever was irrelevant I just wanted to get it cheaper than what everyone else was paying. Turned out to be some old guy and unsurprisingly as you've assumed, not from China, or was he? He actually just unlocks phones and didn't acknowledge I even used the word root, he was thinking "oh no, they've found me."
@Flucker08 I meant since version22 of magisk not SDK22.
rooting with magisk used to be something you could do all from a custom recovery. now you have to download your firmware and patch it with magisk on your phone and then flash the patched image from PC
Hello
Please tell me, if i rooted Samsung s20 FE 5G ( Snapdragon ) can update new Firmware its Odin ? and not lost my all user data ? ( i hope to not must clear ) and rooted again ?
Please write, how to do it ?
after the first time rooting and unlocking the bootloader (so you could root) you wouldn't have to wipe again.
you would download the updated firmware, patch the AP file from your phone same as before and flash the downloaded firmware and patched AP all together in Odin @onken
if you select CSC_home for the CSC partition your user data will not be wiped !!
Hi
Ok, thanks for info @3mel
Please tell me yet, patch the AP i must prepare before flash new update firmware ?

yes, you download the update from somewhere. extract the AP file from the archive and copy to the phone. run magisk from the phone and wait till it's finished. copy the patched file back to your computer and use it along with the rest of the firmware files. again for CSC you MUST use the HOME_CSC file and not the regular CSC if you don't want the phone wiped.
that last part only applies when updating the phone, the first time you root you will have to wipe.

It is advised against updating after root. If you're on exynos I don't know but snapdragon it will make you lose root and no getting it back. It's said you can do it by removing the boot files from the firmware before flashing but I haven't tried just heard about it. Honestly you should just leave it. You aren't missing out on any amazing features. Most updates are security and if you're root you don't have much anyways.
All ok thanks for advice

Hi @3mel
If I unlock, install twrp and root with magisk as per afaneh92's method, since I have twrp now, how much will the update method differ from what you mentioned here, if i don't want a wipe. If possible, can you please tell the steps in brief or provide a source? Sorry if this is not the right place for asking this.
I'm on SM-G781B/DS with OneUI 4.1(Android12).
