Hello Everyone,
I recently bought an EEE PC as a second computer and seeing as it's about the most easily lost or stolen laptop ever made, I thought it might be an idea to run some software on it that might help me recover it should it ever go missing.
After trying a few existing bits of software and not finding any satisfactory, I resorted to writing my own.
Since it seemed useful to me, I thought I'd make it available to anyone interested. It's a very early version at the moment and very basic, but I don't think there are too many bugs (famous last words!! ).
I thought I would post a message here as I use this forum quite a lot, and I know a lot of people here won't have a problem with editing the config file to set it up, I've tried to make things as simple as possible. However, if you don't know the difference between POP3 and SMTP mail servers, this app is probably not for you!!
If people are interested, I'll continue to develop it further. A few ideas are listed on my website.

this isn't hard to circumvent.
Nice app, but wouldn't they probably wipe the HDD?
How would it compare to Lojack's (utilizes Computrace) service? Some laptops have the Computrace service embedded in the bios. I currently use a Dell D410 and Panasonic CF-19, and they both have Computrace built into the bios. If someone formats my hard drive, or installs another harddrive, the bios will rebuild the neccessary files, run in the the background and start reporting the IP address back to Lojack.
Yes, of course the hard drive could be wiped, or it could never be connected to the internet. It is also easy to circumvent, although if I do develop it further, it would be fairly straight forward to make it less obvious and better hidden. This is only a very first version, to gauge interest more than anything,
It's not meant to be 100% foolproof, that probably isn't possible anyway. The advantage is it's free. I really developed it because I couldn't get Adeona to work (it just kept failing to connect to its server), not to compete with commercial solutions.
Hmmm, you know how I said I didn't think there were any bugs....
I just found that the Windows version was not saving the detected IP addresses correctly, so it would email you a "new" IP address message every time the computer was rebooted.
However the problem is now fixed, and a new version 0.1a available for download. The cross platform version wouldn't have been affected, but there's a new version of that too, just for completeness.
Sorry
Alex
I've now made some additions and released a new version which includes the changes below:
Added a separate configuration application to simplify initial setup
Added the ability to encrypt the mail server password for better security
Added a link to DNSTools to the IP Detected email for easy lookup of the WHOIS records for the IP Address
As before, visit www.ajhonline.co.uk and download version 0.2 from there.
Alex
PS - If you are using the Windows version and doing an upgrade from a previous version, make sure you keep a copy of your existing fyl.properties file, otherwise it will be overwritten during the install and any existing known IP addresses will be lost.
huff,.
i wish i have seen this before i lost my friend laptop,.
great help sir,. keep up,.
Version 0.22 is now available for download from www.ajhonline.co.uk.
It's only a small update; you are now able to specify a range of IP addresses as already known so that you don't get an email when one of those is detected.

I have been wanting to use Droidsense for about a week now but it does not work for me. The author seemed excited to fix it, but his fixes all involved me installing all of his other apps, which either required windows (im a linux user) and still didnt work for me on a windows computer.
I know other users are having similar problems based on market comments, so maybe we can find something in common with the failures and narrow it down.
If you have used Droidsense and gotten it to work (anything besides #4 authorization error) or if it fails, please tell me which and some info about your account.
Example, does your username contain all letters, all numbers, is it gmail etc. Does your password contain all numbers/letters, a mixture etc? Password / username length? Obviously dont give out actual email addresses or anything, just general info.
I have 8 letters, 3 numbers in my email, its a gmail.com address and my password was 7 letters and 2 numbers. I have since tried a password with al letters (8 lowercase letters) and it still did not work. I have tried wifi, edge, 3g and hspda and I have made sure I can connect to other ssl sites and programs (paypal, bank apps).
Also if you can think of some
thign else that would cause some to be able to login, but others not please chime in.
Hi Darkrift
I'm the developer of DroidSense.
I continue to search why it doesn't work for some accounts.
If you want to help me, I can send you a small "documentation" to help me to find the problem. Send me a private message with your email address and I'll send you this doc. Or send me an email via my email in the market.
It work for lot of people but I don't know why that doesn't work for someone like you.
Regards
Nicolas
Ho, I read your post to fast...
You are the guy who I sent the doc...
I wait to find another guy who have the problem and running windows to try to fix the problem.
If someone in this forum have login problem with DroidSense, please contact me to help me to fix that problem.
If you want to debug you need to do it properly, not just hit and miss guessing.
Grab a copy of ADB, there is compiled copies about for lin/win/mac if you can't find anything and run a 64bit ver of lin I can give you a copy that I built.
Using ADB you can run 'adb logcat' to get a dump of the system output and more importantly any exceptions that occur that aren't caught you can get a full dump. There is a lot more you can do with ADB, but that's a big start.
delta_foxtrot2 , you are right, the next Lite version I'll publish will be debuggable with informations in the logcat.
I'll try to publish the update this week.
Regards
Nicolas
Hi Folks, I hope I'm posting this in the right section withoud doubling another thread because I have found hints here and there but no actual, efficient solution to my problem.....
Excuse my english, I'm french and couldn't find any solution on french forums either so I'm knocking at your door....
I've always had Android devices but because of some technical issues my provider lended me a WM8 phone (Nokia Lumia 520) for a couple of months before I can get back a new Android phone.
I have the two phones with me for a couple of days but I'm having a hard time transfering some data from the WM8 phone back to my Android, especilly :
-call log (could cope without)
-pdf files (important)
-sms threads (critical)
I mainly focused on SMS's, thinking of different means I could expand upon later on if need be (app, backuping through desktop, outlook or Gmail synch, getting android to synch with OneDrive....) none of this worked so far.
Thanks in advance for your kind help
The only one you will get is the PDF files. You should be able to upload them all into OneDrive and then download them to your PC. From there, transfer them to your Android. The other two are stuck in the Windows cloud, just like how you can't transfer SMS threads from iPhone to Android.
if you come up with something, let the rest of us know!
It *might* be possible to import messages using Bluetooth. I know you can do it from Android to WP8. The other direction... never tried, no idea.

Click to collapse
I hoped so from the very begining but I couldn't find any info about doing it the other way round as you mention :/
in the worst case, is there a means to backup those sms in order to check them later on, or print them maybe ?
Well, they're automatically backed up if you turn it on (Settings -> Backup) but that just goes to Microsoft's "cloud" and I don't know how easy it is to find / download / import it would be.
I'm an old android developer-- the creator of a lot of battery tweaks and such for the old Hero and other phones. Anyway, I've made a job board on the web, and for some reason, people with the S 4 Active complain that they cannot upload their resume to my site.
Anyway, I'd love it if someone could help me on my development server to #1 verify the problem, and #2 help me work out a solution by finding a method of file upload that does work.
My development server is here: dev.junglejobs.com
Just log in using the login [email protected] and the password is "password" no quotes.
Then, just go to this page to attempt to upload a resume http://oklahomacity.dev.junglejobs.com/job-seeker/resume/upload
Any help is appreciated!
working fine for me.
