TWRP (or similiar) recovery for Razer Phone 2? - Razer Phone 2 Questions & Answers

Hello! My first post here, so please don't bite
Anyway, so I just installed LineageOS 18.1 and aside from one bug, there is nothing I had noticed that was problematic. Now, before I run into a bug like this again, I wanted to make a full system snapshot, so I could always go back to precisely this working state instead of having to go through recovery, reinstalling all the apps and what not...
F-Droid, Aura Store, Root, my favorite apps - all there. But when I looked for TWRP for the Razer Phone 2, I was surprised to find that only the ForgeTV and the Razer Phone 1 was listed - not 2 aka. aura, but 1 aka. cheryl.
However, I have read a few times that "TWRP is no longer needed since android 11" without proper explanation in some comment sections, as well as seing threads here talking about having an installed TWRP.
On top of that, sometimes the phone reports itself as "aura", "cheryl2" or just straight up as "cheryl". I have come to terms with "aura" being the actual, proper code name for this device; but this led me to thinking that maybe the official TWRP website was listing the wrongly named release for the actually right phone. That said, I am left very confused.
I only want to get TWRP so I can make a full system backup. SeedVault looks good for "typical" backups into my NextCloud server, but not like I could use it to just re-flash my system back to a previous (known to work) state. One reason why I want to skip the first-steps wizard, if possible, is because I am visually impaired. It is far easier to zoom in my terminal than to first use another phone as a magnifier, to find the accessibility options, turn on zoom, then navigate through a half-dimmed screen and...its a mess, really.
Thank you very much and kind regards,
Ingwie

Is Android supposed to be stable?

Maybe im expecting too much:
When I press gallery, almost 1/3 of the time only 1 or 2 categories come up and no thumbnails. Then i exit and press again and a few more things show up. Then i exit again and usually the 3rd time or so the app opens properly.
Also, about once every 2 weeks i press an app and it opens a different app. And this happens with multiple apps. The only way to fix it is to reboot.
I dont use a task manager
I reboot the phone every couple of days
I wipe the phone about once every 1 or 2 months
Is one of the above practices ruining my device?
I bought the phone and i havent done anything custom to it. Why does my polished 2.1 firmware work like a 5th grade science experiment?
Have occasionally noticed that the gallery app does not pick up all images and categories... something with the media scanner... try using the media scanner in the dev tools app or unmount and remount ur sd card...
Never had any problems with apps opening wrong apps... this is very strange... I have no idea why this is happening and quite frankly, I can;t think of anything which would serve as a possible solution!
Occasionally I've had the latest picture taken not show up in the gallery, but that's it. Stock O/S is great.
Never had it open the wrong app.
I don't run a task killer, don't reboot & have never wiped.
About the app opening the wrong app thing I guess its good news if I'm the only one. Is it possible that I've downloaded an app that is causing it? Or is it more likely an OS issue? it seems a little cheesy that the phone does this, if I could fix it without rebooting that would be a step in the right direction...
Likely an app you downloaded, or just something a little off about the flashing of your update, or a bad RAM memory block at the wrong place.
As for the gallery, I thought I had that issue a bit too, but I noticed that more than anything it just takes a really long time to open fully if it has been kicked out of the cache.
As for the original question posed in the thread title, Android is still Beta in a lot of ways. 2.0/1 is a huge change in many ways from 1.6. It sounds like 2.2 is going to be a bit of a change as well, but instead of changing nearly everything, it is going to build of 2.0/1 plus add in some changes. I am willing to bet that until the release after Gingerbread (the OS after 2.2, aka FroYo), not sure what the "H" release will be codenamed will we see an OS that isn't "Beta" in enough ways for me to call it non-Beta personally... then again, so far Android is less buggy than windows mobile, better than Blackberry even, and on par with iPhone OS, if not better in these regards.
Just like an OS for a computer, same holds true for a smartphone, there are going to be bugs, there are going to be bad programs/apps, and so forth.
I think you should wait for FroYo, if Android still doesn't meet your standards, root and flash some of the custom ROMs. Enom is very stock like, but fixes many of the little bugs, as does Cyan, although with Cyan you do get a few more bugs in some of the development apps and what not.
Just a thought, but maybe you're suffering from the occasional wacky touchscreen issue?
So it's not that it's just opening the wrong app, but the screen is registering a touch in a different place, it's usually most noticable when typing. If it is that, then a simple lock/unlock will solve it, no need for a reboot.

Unmodified gTabs

Not only am I a newbie, but I am also a timid newbie. I am reluctant to mess around with the stock software, and OS that came with my gTab. Most of the great apps, and advice on this site requires you to either flash the tablet, or root the device, etc. I am WAY too chicken to try this. I would love to be able to get to the usual Market as I can on my phone. I would also like to use Swype. Is there any way to "open" up the tablet to these without "major" surgery? I think a list of apps that can be manually installed would be helpful to inexperienced "chickens" like me. Or any add ons, that might improve our new baby would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That is like buying a brand new car, and then replacing the engine. Fine for some, but really not necessary.
Reggie777: I am going to apply the newest update to my stock g-tablet. This usually wipes out all user changes, including installed apps. I will actually follow my own post about doing the changes. I can't remember everything!

Funny I had to pull nothing out of my gtab? LOL
Why would I pull the Tegra out just to flash a rom?
PS there is a reason that thread was on page 3 as there are fewer that are not flashing roms.
Plus the original point was that the "SEARCH" was a wonderful thing.

I just did the 1.0.1-3053 update, and it appears all previous changes remained. I did have to re-root it with the z4root app. Those complaining of problems after this update seem to be running a customized ROM. You won't have these problems unless you flash a customized ROM.

This whole argument is ridiculous. Not a single rom has done a single thing to the underlying "Stock" structure. They are all based from the original "Stock" stuff. The only thing they do is either add or subtract from the original base software.
There is no magic here. If you buy a new car and put shiny new wheels on it you have done the same thing. The car still has the stock engine, and basic structure. If you bought a house that was painted pink and didn't like how it looked you might paint it. Same house, just a new look.
So, your stock with tweaks is essentially the same as my stock with tweaks. I just choose to install the majority of the tweaks at one time with a simple rom update. You do yours one by one..
I don't care what anyone does with there tablet as long as you don't use it to start World War III. But the my mods are better than your mods argument is kind of silly.
Do whatever makes you happy. All I can say is that pretty much no matter what you do it can be put back to original in about 5 minutes. Boot loops, hangs, funky looking screens.. All part of the learning process. Some people seem to be more prone to it. Most of the issues I see people have come from them getting in a big hurry, not thoroughly reading the instructions given with almost every mod, and then flashing away. Slow down, read, and understand what you are doing and it will all typically go just fine.

Not true.
Some of the mods are based on the zpad image, a completely different image than the g-tablet. My only objection is people saying flashing custom ROMS is a must. That is nonsense, and I will say so every time I see someone post that.
The more updates that ViewSonic put out, it seems the fewer "tweaks" that will be needed.
Can we keep the trolling to World of Warcraft?
There are minor to major changes that can be done ROM wise. What is important IMHO is to give choices to someone that is just starting.
I have the impression the op would like TnTLite version vs Vega or Cyanogen or even ZPad.
I did start like you... almost happy with stock. But the more basic things I needed I noticed the original TnT wasn't good enough. I have changed to TnTLite myself and couldn't be happier.
Just check that thread. Its one stop and change.
Good luck
Bingo! Choice is king, if you don't like the choice you choose go back to stock. But atleast show all your choices, we are not all wanting the same build, hence we are not talking IPADS.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I gather that rooting the gTab is not such a big deal after all? I had started with the impression that rooting and flashing the rom were similar, and equally "dangerous". I DID find the thread that copc referred me to after my starting this thread. We all have to start somewhere as newbies. Thanks too to Wasserkapf for his help.
Rooting will still allow you to get all VS updates. Same with doing the Market install.
Flashing a ROM can be scary, especially if you have lots of stuff on your tablet. I found that investing in Titanium Backup (requires root) was a great idea. I do a full backup every time I flash my ROM and restore apps and data afterwards; I have never lost data nor settings.
If you decide to flash TnT Lite or VEGAn (which is coming along nicely and really brings the tablet to life IMO), there are not only many posts but many friendly folks who are here to help you out.
I am very happy with my G Tablet and this community has been immeasurably helpful in making it so useful.

Exactly we all start as newbies, and it's places like this that are great help.
Good News, everyone. I used z4root, and was able to root my gTab. I also was able to install Launcher Pro, so that now when I turn it on, I get the option of going to the old familiar Android layout as on my Droid. Thanks for the encouragement from you'all. The sky did not fall. Yeah!
I do have some questions, though.
1. If I accidentally load in the TapnTap home screen, I cannot get back to the launcher pro. I cannot find it on the tablet to run it. I can find the apk and it offers to install it again. So, can anyone tell me where it is hidden?
2. I downloaded the vendors apk in an attempt to get the old android market place as on my phone. But it will not install. I am sure I am doing something wrong.
3. There are some icons to the right, the web, messages, and the phone. Is there a way to remove the ones that do not work? Only the web works. I understand that the phone would not, and even the messages. But how can I remove them?
Again, thanks for the moral support and encouragement. I still find the structure of the tablet confusing. Internal SD, external SD, root, etc. Anyone out there with the technical know how could make quite a few dollars by writing a book explaining the wonders, procedures, and pitfalls of our new tablet.

On my tablet, just hitting the Home icon in the upper-right corner will do that. It is the second one from the top, on the bezel of the screen.

That is the second thing on my list of tweaks. You need to download and install several files. Please follow the instructions:

You should be able to drop a different icon, from the main screen 'Desktop' on top of it, essentially replacing it. To get different icons on the main screen, open the app drawer, and tap and hold an icon. To remove it from the main screen, tap and hold, and move it to the trash can on the right.
I got as far as downloading the zip file, unzipping it. But I am not sure what "mount as R/W" means. I am also not up on the structure of the storage of the Gtablet, and my computer sees .android_secure, Android, Backgrounds, backups, DCIM, download, and Lost.Dir. As a result, I am not sure where to copy the new files to. I moved the unzipped file to the download folder on the tablet. But I am not sure where to go from here. Being a newbie bites.

I thought that the instructions were as clear as anyone could make them.
3. Using AndRootFile or any other file manager that supports root access, mount as R/W, and copy the contents of G Tablet\permissions to System\etc\permissions.

That means to use a file manager that supports root browsing. The stock one doesn't, so you will need to install one. The link in the original post will get you the AndRootFile app, that should work. I purchased RootExplorer from the Android Market, so that is what I use. It has a "Mount R/W" button at the top, and I assume AndRootFile has something similar.
Oh, and root is to Unix/Linux/Android that Administrator is to Windows. You need root permissions to make system changes.
Once you have mounted it in R/W mode, copy the files to the folders that it says to. When done, don't forget to re-mount it in R/O mode before exiting.
My bad. I had used z4root to do the rooting. I'll try it with the one you suggested. Thanks.
Actually z4root should work for rooting the tablet. But it isn't a file browser with root access. That is where the other apps come into play.
OK. Here is my adventure so far. I got AndRootFile, and installed it. It is now working. But when I try to copy a file to another location, it does not want to copy the file. features.xml is an example of one that it shows the check box for copying, but when I get to the destination, there is nothing to paste. Frustrating. I also tried Rootexplorer, and have the same result. Now it looks as if the other new file in the new permissions folder copies, since it says it exists and do I want to overwrite. I said yes. But the second file, features does not show up even after I try to paste it. The good news is that I am figuring out the structure of the Beast, and so can move around much easier with AndRootFile, and RootExplorer. Thanks for your ongoing patience, and support.
It doesn't sound as if you are first mounting the file system in R/W (Read/Write) mode. And when finished, make sure you mount it back into R/O (Read/Only) mode before exiting.

magisk_debug.log taking up 1.4 GB

Non-developer here asking a potentially stupid question. You have been warned.
So, I noticed that my phone's free storage seemed lower than usual. DiskUsage showed about 4 GB of "System Data". I find factory resetting to be a huge pain because I have a few apps that are really hard to back up and restore (such as keepsafe), so I decided to look around and try to find the culprit. Turns out, there's a file in /data/adb/ called "magisk_debug.log" that takes up 1.4 GB and I'm not sure if it's safe to delete because, on the one hand, it's a log, but on the other hand, as I stated at the beginning of the post, I'm not a developer, which means there are a lot of things I don't know about Android's file system, plus I sometimes tend to do stupid things with my phone that cause me a lot of trouble. So, can I delete it or should I leave it be?
I'm using a Galaxy S8 with Android 7.0 if that's relevant for anything
Maybe you are using a debugging channel? Switch to a stable channel or a normal channel and delete the log file.
For anyone stumbling on this (it has been answered already in the Magisk General support thread):
The magisk_debug.log file has not been used in Magisk for a long time (Magisk v14.3, or so). If you still have it on your device it's perfectly safe to delete.

Question Is it worth it to install a Custom Rom on the Redmi Note 10 Pro?

I got my Redmi Note 10 Pro a couple of weeks ago and I'm really liking it except for some issues. MIUI feels really bloated and sluggish even after using the adb tools to remove most of the pre-installed garbage. Battery life has been really disappointing even after going to 60hz and using low brightness. You also can't use a third party launcher with the full screen gestures and i hate the default launcher. I've been thinking about installing Pixel Experience as I've seen other people having better battery life and performance than on MIUI. It's also stock android so that's a cherry on top, but i don't know what sort of issues it might come with. First of all I don't know if all of my apps will work. I'm also scared that I might brick my phone and I'm not gonna be able to go back to MIUI if there are any issues. Also I might not get regular or quality updates and I don't trust the small team that works on the pixel experience rom more than Xiaomi. Can someone tell me if any of these issues exist and if it's worth it to use a custom rom? Thanks.
it is, I've been using debloated miui11 and 12 on tulip for over 2 years, it is much, much better than original miui. My wife has been using custom aicp on rn4x, and again, experience was much better, than on stock.
Apps will work in 99% cases, if not, there are tutorials how to install them. Stuff that you have to look over the most are banking apps, nfc apps and rn10p miui stock cam (which is actually better, than gcam mods now).
RN10p does not have anti rollback protection, it is generally easier to flash than smartphones based on mediatek cpus, so you must done some physical damage to actually broke this phone.
About OTA's - there are options to install ota updates on custom recovieries like skyhawk recovery project or others to twrp (this recovery does not have that option, as far as I know). If that fails, you can always install new version on top of the old.
Ok thanks a lot! Are there any suggestions you can give me on what rom i should use on the rn10p and can you give me any tips about installing and using custom roms? I'm new to this.
I've just started and installed pixel experience (normal, without plus, not sure, what is the difference between it, since even the size is the same). Firstly, you have to unlock your bootloader in order to proceed. Then make sure you've installed usb drivers for this phone (without it, you cannot unlock bootloader, for example, because miunlock does not see your phone).
About a rom - the cleaner the android, the better (mostly). If you aren't super tied to some special miui-only options (most noticeable being xiaomi account and preinstalled mi forum), then you are free to go. Phone is capable of running even fully packed android 11, so picking the lightest rom without gapps to save space doesn't have much sense these days (it had like 7 years ago, when internal storage was always a shortage). Most cool stuff are call recorder (blocked in official miui and in most european countries), small tweaks with gestures and buttons (most roms have it), tweaks like "long press menu button to torch" etc. You'll have to look for yourself later then, but for now just follow guide to install and read topics before instalation - in most cases if something goes wrong, you should be able to pick that from somebody's story. Also remember about backups of internal storage, music, photos, app installers etc, because all of it is gone with almost every operation.
Generally from MIUI there's one thing that You must take with you - camera app. So far stock is best. There are tutorials in pixel experience thread on how to install it. Also, I highly recommend root - you can make it only after unlocking bootloader, but being able to access deeper areas of system, uninstall unwanted stuff, get rid of ads etc is worth the try, especially if nowadays magisk instalation is really simple. For more advanced users, you could try to install edxposed manager to customize phone even more.

Why would it be a joke? Not everyone is master of rom swapping and adb commands freshly out of the box. Best way to back up non root

I have plans to go back to a locked bootloader once Android 12 is final. I have an older Pixel 2 XL and I was wondering if it would be possible to copy all apps data and settings to the older pixel then restore them back to the 5 after the bootloader relocking. I was originally going to do the adb backup to a PC but read that some apps like Google Authenticator don't backup via adb. I am trying to figure out the best way to backup prior to relocking.
Thanks!

It depends on what type of app data you're talking about. Saved games, forget it without root. Most logins will not be saved either unless you have them saved with Google login. Try it with a couple of apps and see what happens. As for Google authenticator you can install a copy on another device with the new version. Then once you wipe the P5 you can once again transfer the app and data to the P5 from the 2XL.
I would start here.
-----------------
Why Google Authenticator? Are you trying to keep everything Google, or? Pure curiosity.
When I started using 2 factor a few years back I found it (Google Auth) to be extremely limited,,, and I don't see any updates to it to make me change to it.
Limited password protection, no encrypted backups for one thing,
I don't like Authy either, which seems to be #1, sans its terrible UI (IMO) and I find their multi-device support, just a bad idea, security-wise. What it does have going for it, is a desktop app, but I actually prefer my phone, which is with me umm, 99.999999% of my life.
So, what do I suggest? 2FAS. Its 4.7 star rating is highly deserved. What I do, is use its integrated Google drive sync backup (which can be considered not great for security, so in that case, don't use it (same to be said of Authys multi-device too), but I like it and when you're logged into your Google Account, log into 2FAS and all your tokens are back, HOWEVER, here comes oh the oh sh!t moment. How exactly are you to log into your Google account without having your 2FAS code for Google, because you need to be logged into yor account to get the codes, lol. Well what I do is keep an Encrypted backup on a flash drive, and my Samsung backup drive, as you NEVER know., and it's a good habit. To make things easier however I keep 2FAS logged on my old phone, that isn't really used at all, but in a pinch it's a good method to use.
-----------------
As I don't have much of any idea on the backups, but am interested, so I wish you well. And I would do as @bobby janow suggested. You have a solid number of great apps to try for this, as well. I will firstly suggest Flar2's new AppDash App. He actually also, though I do believe I read he doesn't know much about this, but it has a wonderful backup integration built into it, and can be used without root, which will limit things, but it's a fresh new app, and he may even update based on your experiments, just a thought. Next it Titanium backup I think? I actually never used the app. And then this XAPKS App, which seems to have a backup section much like the one in AppDash, but AppDash, you will probably get much better support for. Also I've read GREAT praises for Swift backup App.
Please keep us updated on what you decide to do, as it will only help others. And, best of luck to you on this, as it's an interesting idea.
I used to do something similar with TWRP.
And a side question, either of you know if our TWRP recovery backup works?
@andybones I used TWRP so many times over the years. And Titanium backup was the teets. That would backup everything, data, passwords, apps galore. But I believe both of those require root which the OP wants to get around. I'm not sure what happened to TWRP development since I haven't rooted in years but I do kind of keep up now and again. I don't know if it still works like it used to, which means it's time for me to visit the Roms, Kernels, and recoveries forum. ;-)
Yes, Google authenticator is minimalist for sure. But it's really easy to use and does work but I will look into 2FAS, thanks for the link. I tried a few of the backup apps when I unrooted way back when and none worked well without root. But I'm sure a lot has changed. I'd be curious to see when the OP comes up with too. On a side note I really hope the P6 is not too large looking. haha. I'd so love to stick with Android. Should be soon when we know. One last thing on backup, I always do a backup of my text and phone calls with SMS backup and restore SMS even though transfer to a new device usually does the trick. But once I lost a bunch of stuff due to user error in the upgrade.

I LOVE TWRP, such an amazing recovery. I remember when first switching over to it. I always heard such raving reviews about TiBackup, I just never needed it, or maybe I found other alternatives, most likely due to habit. I think I've rooted every single device I've owned of Android since the first HTC Eris, wild ride. I think Encryption and A11 in general is causing slow downs, only guessing however, I believe A10 is rocking. There are a cpl dope ROMs for the P5, and they use a custom limited recovery from my small understanding (It's still new to me that recovery is tied to the boot.img), but also I've read the use of web flash tool, like you can with Google, which is freaking awesome! It's interesting to me to be flashing a ROM to my phone from my PC. I wonder what the fallbacks are on this method though for frozen PC or reboots, ETC.
And, thinking of it, there isn't anything wrong with a minimalist App such as Google Auth, but very welcome for the link, I hope you give 2FAS a try and interested in your thoughts.
It certainly is a different experience of Android without root. Ads & limitations. but still a good experience. It's also strange being rooted on pure stock like I am. It's a nice experience, tbh. A different one than I'm used to, but still really nice.
SMS Backup & Restore, too dope! This was an absolute must for me. I use Signal now, so I need to rely on their backup and restore, as they encrypt them. But it works well, if all goes to h#ll you usually will have a backup within the past couple of days which isn't bad.
And that P6 bro, I'm itching to hold it and see if I can be able to use it. I hope so. This is my first Pixel and I enjoy the experience.
I really miss being able to run and restore nandroids.
I guess I have used google authenticator out of convenience. I also have a Google Titan key which is my primary account recovery tool.
Bobby Janow and Andybones have learned me so much. Shout out to both of you.

Thank you so much, and you're so welcome. I know my posts can get long at times. But, the way I see it, I'd rather give MORE information in my initial posts but also hopefully answered your question(s), which will save a post of you asking for more details. This has been an annoyance at times over the years where someone may not give exact Modification naming and version causing myself or others users seeking more needed information that I feel should be standard.
If you're signed into your Google account on your phone, most of your apps and settings should be backed up there. You'll need to ensure your pictures and user data are otherwise backed up though.
Why relock?

Banking.
I see. Be careful when relocking, double check if everything is correctly flashed to stock otherwise you could have big problems to unlock bootloader again if needed.

Thanks!

Use Titanium Backup to backup all app data. It needs root. Then just copy paste all backup files to your other phone and restore them.

Totally agree. Full, unadulterated stock, latest image. Then and only then..
It looks like the final version of 12 will be out in a few weeks. I have moved all of my Authentication tokens from Google Authenticator to 2FAS. I only had seven accounts to move so it wasn't horrible. As I mentioned, I still have the Titan key as my primary 2FA for my main Google Account so I should be good to get the phone back up after the relock.
I am am on the latest beta for Android 12 and plan to do the following when the final Android 12 files are available.
Full backup of phone and sdcard using adb
Install Factory Image with Wipe
Relock bootloader
restore adb backup
