After some reading I came to find that you cannot dl paid apps if you root your phone. I would like to have the apps that I paid for. Is there anything like the iphone hacked phones where you can access the market?
With almost all of the recent ROMs you can download/access paid apps. That problem was fixed a loooooooonng time ago.
Wrong section, and if you would have done more reading you would have found that it is no longer a problem.

I find that basic reading and comprehension skills to be your main problem because it seems that your lack of these two key skills/superhuman abilities leads to you not being able to post this thread in the correct forum and not performing any type of search for an answer to your own question.
If we are able to solve these two of your presumed plethora of "issues" i believe that you'll live a better life etc. etc. etc...

Well, I hate to break it to you buddy, but this whole customization thing with the phones isnt a one stop shop. If you dont read, you're going to brick your phone. So since you have this all important life, and by implication, are too good to read up, perhaps you oughtta unroot until you have time to do things right, like maybe reading the sticky that says "dont post threads like this one in the freaking dev section".

I'm sorry, I don't help stuck up idiots who can't even attempt to help themselves.
eabod....
If it really takes you all day of reading just to understand your cell phone, then you do have a problem.
As said the new roms dont suffer the same fate as the older ones. You should be just fine.
XDA is the wrong place to ask questions, even in the correct forum. People overall here seem to have a attitude that they know it all, and were born that way..its almost like they just jump on the bashing bandwagon simply because its the "happening" thing to do. Mind you only a very few are able to build and release roms, customizations and so on the rest are moochers only they like to pretend they are something special.
If you search, generally you will find what your looking for eventually, sometimes not at all and sometimes you find it but its so buried by other crap you dont know you found it. I guess your best bet is to make damn sure you posted your question in the correct forum, then hope that someone deems you important enough to answer..or just search the countless pages and deprive the bashers of the reason most are here and dont ask...my how the post counts would fall...you see a question asked and its jump on em fellas, he asked a question..1 smart remarks not enough, they line up to leave replies that most have thought of days earlier...just waiting to use it instead of simply linking to the answer, giving an idea where it may be found or something...nah, just bash em, that makes this place look all the more better, a much more friendly environment lol, whatever.
I enjoy xda, but honestly some of you make for a truly elementary experience, while a few others do a lot more...you come here for the roms, mods, hacks, for most of us not the ones we did, we can do or the ones we had a hand in creating..and you cant take a minute or two to answer a few questions? Think of the work the actual devs have done, the time involved, the testing over and over...wanna help some? Answer peoples simple questions without being an ass! If nothing else link em to where they should go!
I disagree, everytime these questions pop up, they are usually answered in the first reply, if not the second one.
But for the most part, I think being an ass is just a way to keep these wrong threads to the minimal.
I've never seen someone being an ass when a member ask a question (doesn't matter related to the topic of not) at the end of a ROMs' thread.

I understand that, somewhat. But after his question was answered, do you see all the other people that posted, for no other reason then to try and belittle the guy that asked the question? Thats what I am referring to, those comments do nothing to help anyone, provide no use what so ever out side of making xda look like a buncha jerks.
Look at all the people that say its not helping by having questions in a release post, as it adds more to the dev having to sift over the comments, yet the " flashing now!" is just as off topic in reality as its not helping the dev know anything about any issues one may have..if people have to say "flashing now" then say I flashed, and heres what I found..see what I am saying?
Honestly people are going to be jerks on any forums, so it just comes with the territory. Usually you can avoid this by trying to learn some basic forum rules. Most are stickyed at the top of the forums. IMO use the search and spend like 15 to 20 mins to figure out what is going on in the forums. And then if your still stuck post in the Q&A forums.
The thing about this post that really roasts my goat is the OP lack of motivation to try and find his own answers. We are not his tech support and everybody here does this for free...Its disrespectful, insulting and lazy...
I have tons of respect for people that try to figure out problems for themselves first (search, google, read).
Please see this video [http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting] for proper forum etiquette. (I know, its old but its still damn funny and so true...)
@nickwinn does "eabod" really stand for what i think it stands for? if it does just mention something about the boondocks and i will know for sure

but of course! what else are we here for? to help with reasonably asked questions where the poster doesn't get a massive attitude problem? of course not, we must be here to answer everyone of joe blow's question and disregard any attitude he/she may get!!!! please search next time before posting such mess ThR1LL
i think my head just burst from so much sarcasm
Hey at least the op took the time to read a little bit maybe it was outdated but a least he did try, so cut the guy some slack, he did better than some other people who read nothing and come right to here and expect some hand holding
People like the OP are why this forum is getting worse, and to ducter if you really think we are all assholes why do you come here? If you ask a question in the wrong forum we will most likely give you ****, but also give you a little help. If you use the correct forum we will help you, unless your question is ssomething you could of found out in less then 5 minutes by searching.
This forum has 100's of thousands of members and if half of them are asking questions that have been answered hundreds of times it clogs the forum and we lose sight of other valuable posts or people with real questions about problems that are new and have not been solved.
Furthermore when someone says some **** like they don't have time to read about there cell phone then why are you here in the first place? Don't root your phone or better yet goto the tmobile store and ask them to help you fix your rooted G1. If you can't take the time to read like everyone else does/should then go buy a lg env or something and maybe it will be simple enough for you to figure out.
i just dont get this. i have been a member for 2 months and im just as lost as i was when i started. if i ask 1 of the people who know what to do they say search or gtfo. i search and end up more confused. the threads arent very friendly to a person just starting out like me. all of the language is written for people who already no what their doing. its not dumbed down at all. i think i will just use this site to download roms and themes since thats all i can seem to do
I am not trying to attack you or anything, but what is the purpose of this thread?
There are a lot of helpful people around here, maybe you aren't putting your questions in the Q&A thread? Or they aren't worded properly so people know how to assist you.... IDK.
Seeing as this is the only thread you have ever started here, I can't really say that it looks like you have posted much requesting help. I see one post where you were having problems flashing a new recovery image, but it looks like you probably just entered either the file name or path wrong. Or you didn't save the file in the root of your sdcard.
But, also, seeing as this is the XDA-Developers forum.... a certain level of knowledge seems to be expected by a lot of the members. I really don't see where anyone has told you to search or GTFO, in fact, I didn't really notice any responses to your posts.
If you want people to help you, post in the proper section and form coherent, explanatory questions.

See, another helpful person offering assistance..
This place isn't all that bad, now is it?
The issue is this I think...
Generally, you need to know something of what you are doing. The reasons are simple;
1) If things start to go wrong, you need to understand enough about the process to at least be able to follow instructions without them having to be written in a specific button-by-button manner,
2) People who blindly follow instructions are bound to miss a step or screw one up simply because they don't understand the instructions (this goes back to #1).
If you are a regular user of an android device, I suggest sticking with a stock build -- they are meant for people who know nothing about the platform. If you are an advanced user, you should be able to get the "gist" of things and fill in the blanks where necessary.
I'm not telling you to gtfo, what I'm telling you is that you really need to think about YOUR level of understanding of how things happen. If you aren't advanced enough to be able to fill in a few blanks here and there, then you might want to think about what you are doing, which is essentially putting a fairly expensive piece of technology into the hands of people you don't know and have no reason to trust. You also have to realize that the instructions that you get from here don't go through months of QA to verify that they are perfectly correct with no chance of, for example, bricking your phone. It is very possible that you could see a bunch of instructions that tell you what to do, but that the author maybe accidentally forgot to include a critical step, and it is absolutely UP TO YOU to be able to see that there is a missing step.
I concur. I have had numerous people ask me for help rooting their g1's. Some I help because they are computer literate and have hacked or altered software on other platforms and hardware. Those that have asked that still need help when basic things go wrong in a windows platform, I say no and tell them to enjoy their Android phone. If they are willing to dive in and learn, my offer may change down the road
What do you need help with?
I'm posting this in the Development section because that is what I am trying to learn about. Please move me if I am mis-posting this.
I'm greatly interested in the the Roms people are making and everything that is being done on these forums. If someone wanted to start to learn about these things, developing and such, where should they start? Do I need to learn Java? Are there certain books I should be reading?
I can flash my phone like its my day job now, and I haven't come across any major problems I couldn't solve by reading, but I have no idea where to start to be able to develop things myself. If any developers here could maybe throw out a few tips on how to get started, what someone should focus on learning, etc., it would be greatly appreciated! I have plenty of time and a great desire to learn so I'm not intimidated by having to do the work, I just have to have some things to focus on. Thank you in advance for any help/advice you can give me!
I always wanted to know how make roms also I was looking around the internet but couldn't find anything that will describe it step by step word for word.
Maccie
It will be a huge writeup. But im sure someone will do it. I am still learning myself. There are some good topics around but different from what we have now

There are a number of aspects to android development you have to learn to know how to build a full ROM from scratch. C is of course required for kernel building, and apps are built from java in the dalvik-vm, but can be built against sun java.
of course, to get started, you would need the android sdk available here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
then there's the cloning of the android git:
http://android.git.kernel.org/
and, specifically for the captivate, there's the captivate source code:
http://opensource.samsung.com/
then there's pulling off the vendor proprietary libs from your phone (which is a ***** and I believe you can grab them from wes's github, though I can't speak for their accuracy) here:
http://github.com/wesgarner/proprietary_vendor_samsung
building the entire android OS from source is a challenge, especially compensating for some changes Samsung has introduced. this is what a real ROM is. now if you're talking about "ROM"s like Cognition and Shep's and even Eugene's Hybrid/Frankin-Twiz... they aren't comparable. Not to belittle any of their efforts, but this is simple "drag and drop" from stuff built by Samsung. While they're very useful tools, there is little actual development going on in them. There are improvements and tweaks, for sure... but it isn't a *true* ROM. All these releases by DesignGears, Eugene, and Shep are good and effective, but it'd be a shame if they weren't because they are just files thrown together from Samsung's already compiled ROM(s). Even the AOSP Beta 3 (which I have a qualm with the name, because it isn't actually AOSP, it's files pulled from an already built AOSP tossed onto Samsung's ROM again) is just modifying binaries (decompile, edit, recompile).
for those, it's as simple as extracting the zip, replacing the files you want, and rezip it. modifying the update-script inside meta-inf if there's something you want to add.
Awesome post Kaik, thanks, I was wondering some of those too.
Thx that explained a bunch
Maccie
Thank you for taking the time to post that Kaik! It's nice to have a place to start! Anyone else have any tips or things they think might be good to check out?
last, but certainly not least and I can't believe I forgot this, is Unhelpful's toolchain to compile against:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761923
he did a lot of testing with various combinations, and this was the best he found to reduce wakeup lag and other issues
Wow. Kaik. That was the most awesome response to that question I have ever seen. Most people just point to developer.android.com and say go learn to program and come back in 5 years.
Thank you for this very useful information. Your the man now dog.

Devs are not being mean or pissy, they are being honest and realistic. If development was just "point and click" XDA would not even be here. Give the devs/veterans a break and take it upon yourself to learn the basics and do some searches, if you are that interested.
I would love to just start making my own Android OS just the way I like too but to do that will require much more reading and learning, trying and failing.
You will probably not find "the answer" you are looking for but if you search, read and most importantly, respect the time, energy and anguish people have put into this site you will find the means to get where you want.
Otherwise you can expect... "Let me just glance and peek to see how to do this. Damn what the hell does that mean? Oh well here is a modded ROM. I'll try that. Jeez, that sucks. How do I make my own? Let me just glance and peek to see how to do this. Damn what the hell does that mean? Oh well ..." It is an endless cycle.
I'm not saying this to belittle anyone. Most have been there, including myself. I say this as a vote of confidence to all.
Hang in there, do the work, break some phones, read some books. Really! You have to!

this times one thousand. I linked you guys to some very useful sites when it comes to actually putting android together... but understanding how it all works, actually getting a successful build, fixing bugs, etc... I can't even begin to pretend to be able to help with that. if you have little to no experience in C and Java, these things will basically be useless to you. dev's aren't being mean when they brush you off like that, but usually if you can't figure out how to google what to do with the code, they don't have high hopes for what you'll be able to do with it once you find the code.
the idea isn't to be like "f*** off" when they say that, it's more of a "we'll help you when you learn, but you're the one who needs to take the first steps and you need to take the responsibility of learning on yourself."
I was actually referring to the fact that someone like me, a hobbyist programmer for about 10 years now, can make sense of his reply and use it to go forth and actually do something. Most of the guides you find on here that are supposedly pointed at noobs, do not layout things as easily as his post did.
Wasn't criticizing anyone, but I have seen less patience nowadays for any posts such as these.
Was just saying it was a gem of a post for me personally. Maybe it doesn't help the ultra noobs and the more experienced people see it as useless, but for someone with little time right now, it was a perfect post for me.
Just saying HI!
Me being a total newbie, I am open to ideas on how to start learning this stuff. I have been studying the WIKI part of it and know I have a lot more reading to do. I have been hanging out in a phone shop learning what I can and the one thing I have learned is they will always be something different coming around. I would like to learn it from top to bottom from taking them apart to hooking them up to the old PC and having some fun. So any help will be appreciated, thanks again from biggebass, since ya'll already have a bigge, lol

hello developers. Im sorry if im posting this thread in wrong forum but i found no other better place to call for help. I own Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5 SM-T595 (2018) model and i want to root this tab. Development of this model haven't started yes i guess, so i request developers to start development and guide us to root and recovery for this tab. thank you.
Regards - Dr.Anshuman
Those damn developers, sitting around with nothing to do, just waiting for requests!
This should get em going!
Agree, ive got a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5 SM-T590 and ive been waiting for a Recovery and a Rom,fingers crossed someones working on it.
This is bad. No one even wanna talk about SM-T595.
We are still waiting for TWRP and root guide

So why don't you do it? What kind of Dr. makes sad pouty faces because others are not lining up to do hundreds of hours of work on a mediocre tablet in exchange for absolutely nothing? Overbooked proctologist? I imagine you weren't planning to pay anyone anything to do work that you're requesting, but maybe I'm wrong about that? A ot of people will work on a given device because there's something they want out of it, or it would be especially useful, or.... someone found a vulnerability. Personal passion, wide popularity, the crowds of adoring women ... so many reasons, different for everyone working on every device.
What incentive do they have to assist you in this? Maybe it is your drive and insistence that this device open for every user to have full control of their personal information, which you display by all of the work you have done towards creating the root method here yourself? It's been a month since your post., please let me know what you have learned in your work so far

This is especially entertaining after trying to talk down to me... which wasn't very effective after repeatedly begging and pouting that no one will root a random device. to make your life easier. You don't have real books, or a memory card or hard drive to back those up, and you seem to honestly see begging random people to spend their lives doing things for you a more reasonable choice than buying one of those or a more popular tablet or any with an existing path to root. It's pathetic. I'm not even trying to insult you, it's honestly very sad. It's like pride, dignity, and shame have all vanished in favor of entitlement and expectation.

LANGUAGE.
@Dr.Anshuman michael.johns03 is spot on. Your attitude is one of pure infantile and ignorant entitlement. I'm guessing you assume some people are just born with some kind of 'technical' gene? Which gives them the ability to do technical work effortlessly? And you unfortunately don't have that gene? It's just a 'snap of the fingers' for some people to do as you request?

Enough arguments.
Next time, please watch your language @Dr.Anshuman and be courteous towards other members, even if you disagree with them about something.
