[Q] newbie - Off-topic

Just saying HI!
Me being a total newbie, I am open to ideas on how to start learning this stuff. I have been studying the WIKI part of it and know I have a lot more reading to do. I have been hanging out in a phone shop learning what I can and the one thing I have learned is they will always be something different coming around. I would like to learn it from top to bottom from taking them apart to hooking them up to the old PC and having some fun. So any help will be appreciated, thanks again from biggebass, since ya'll already have a bigge, lol

n00b question.....

this is my first post on this forum, and I've just acquired a Kaiser - my first pocket PC. I'm with Orange, and I've been installed the HTC home plugin, audio manager and black theme. This has vastly improved the look IMO, but I'm wondering what's the benefit of flashing the ROM?
From what has appeared on other threads, there does seem to be an element of risk involved, so there must be a good reason taking that risk.
tia
Hey,
Welcome to the forums and congrats on your new Kaiser.
Read the Wiki first and then read read read read read all the posts you can, then read them again.
This one is a another must read:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332438
I have read almost every thread since I got here, and since I have joined I know I have spent 20 hours a week reading and sorting and have yet to pose a question, because this community prefers for newbies to educate themselves so we can avoid having multiple threads concerning the same issues.
The benefits to flashing a ROM are to numerous to cover in one post, especially without you acquiring some knowledge first.
Different ROMs have different attributes, and without the knowledge to fully understand a lot of the different aspects, you can brick your new piece of tech.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Loot at the top menu bar. See the donate link? The community would really appreciate it if you hit that link and contributed whatever you can afford.
Where else can we go and get so much knowledge? No where. So I know the Admins, Mods and members would really appreciate your support.
I Admin on several message boards ( not affiliated here though) and you wouldn't believe the costs involved and since xda helps so many of us, I really believe we should do what we can to help back.
If money is tight, even a dollar or a euro would be appreciated.

New to everything, falshing, roms, etc...

Ok i'm new to the pda phone software customization, and the acronyms nd short hand has got me turned around, upside down and backwards.... i've been reading about the cooked roms and apps, and it all looks cool and i'm psyched about being able to get rid of the ATT rom on my tilt but how to go about doing it all can be quite confusing..... PLEASE HELP! i'm lost
thx in advance
Read the wiki and spend time reading these threads - it's all here. Start with the ROM Upgrading section - people have spent a lot of time laying it out for you. I got from where you are to cooking my own ROMs with just the information provided. Once you've read all that, if you are still having trouble, feel free to PM me.

kewell... it will prolly take some time considering i'm on a borrowed puter with a borrowed wifi connection, but i will give it a shot and see what i can come up with
oh look, someone made this just for you, title says it all.
to be honest, I know we harp on people, but knowledge is the key, without it your bound to screw your phone up. Read my sig... This is truely all you really need to get your phone flashed and even fixed if you think it's bricked. I can't say 100% that it won't happen, but I would say that if you read this and search through the threads for any questions that you may come across, you should be ok. It seems over whelming but it's easy.
Sticky: Have a question? Read this before posting! All answers here (see post 3 for FTP lnk)

I was scared at first.
read the wiki..it really helps i remember i had my tytnii for a few months before i actually decided to flash and i remember searching everything about it and reading all the relevent posts/stickies to grasp a good general knowledge so i dont have to search and stuff while i flash...its better to know beforehand

noobish question re ROM's

First off...hello to all! Great site!
New with the Tilt and have been searching and reading like endless hours! I've tried searching, various sites, etc. Tons of info but most appear pretty technical (sorry..non-techie!)...and I have some probably tired nooby q's for you seasoned xda gods. I have done a few basic mods like adding the HTC home, customizer; etc. I would like to try my hand at these ROM's I keep hearing about...but hesitant in screwing my new phone up.
1) What is a decent tried and true ROM...meaning enough flashy gizmo programs, etc to keep me busy without killing my new phone. Preferbably with a version of voice command that works via my Plantronics Discovery BT earpiece.
2) Ok..don't flame me...how do I "flash" the ROM? Unless I missed something..I found like one YouTube vid of some guy demonstrating it and I still don't get it. Layman terms?
I just want to mod it one final time and that's it for me as I'm sure others here mod theirs on a daily basis as it seems.
Any help is greatly appreciated...and patience with a nooby!
Thanks.
Welcome to the board, lots of information here, enough to make your head spin.
All of the ROM cooks on here do great work, if you're looking for bells and whistles you might want to look into one with Manilla cooked into it, or just load the CAB and use it on your existing ROM.
As for help flashing a upgraded ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356895. This is where I started, read the entire thread and all of the threads it mentions.
For more info read the WIKI here:

Then you might want to check this thread out too:

Have fun with your new TILT, but remember something, ROM flashing is addicting.

To answer your Q's
1) Check around in the Kaiser ROM forums..the first couple of posts of each ROM thread typically decribes what it carries in terms of programs and other info inlcuding bug fix updates etc..plus loads of posts on user feedback on the ROM
2) If you are at the extreme end of being a non-techie then i suggest you dont play around with flashing or get a pal who is savvy to do it for you..you can read up on the subject in the wiki and then see if you are comfortable doing it on your own honestly its pretty well explained there and i dont think it can be made any simpler...
Cheers
Thanks fellas for the sound advice. I'm always willing to learn new things; but when you're less than tech savvy like myself (and I'm pretty sure there's a few like me on here!)...all this info on just this one phone alone can drive you insane! I'm not necessarialy looking for all the bells/whistles..just maybe a ROM that's more or less had it's bugs worked out. And there are just a ton of ROM's out there...most look great but I'm also thinking in the back of my mind that the more advanced ones out there might be a bit much for a 1st timer. I may need to find somebody locally to help in case I run into problems..but I'm determined to do as much as possible myself..knock on wood! Thanks for listening to my long winded posts!

A Huge Thanks To Everyone!

Morning ladys and gents! Id just like to say a HUGE thanks to those who keep this forum up and running, provide info, tutorials and development for these handheld wonders!
the reason for my outbirst of gratitude is because ive recientley upgraded my imate PDA2k Smartphone to wm6.5!
After spending a few days getting everything in place, following instructions from chef_tony and a few other issue threads, and runing a few mock runs in my head.. the final thing came together and was finaly put into physical motion this morning arround 7am! with Complete success!
So, next thing is to figure out how to install various bits and bobs without compomiseing the installation and feel my way about.
So again, thanks a bunch everyone, if a complete flashing novice can do it, then im sure allmost anyone can, if they can be arsed to read the information provided
keep up the fantastic work everyone!
Mark.
ditto
i know exactly how you feel man...after reading and browsing several threads here in this forum i finally get the courage to upgrade my BA...it took me 'quite' a while before having a go at it..
i would never have the guts to push through with it without the support and generous nature of the people in these forums, especially Chef_Tony, who helped me out and patiently guided me through the steps that are needed (as of this writing, i've already 'flashed' two ROMs)..now i feel like i have a new phone each time i flash ROMs..
people who are not selfish to share their knowledge and expertise to those like us who are 'newbies' in this area, are what keeps this forum alive and prospering..may their tribe continue to increase..

Wanting to learn!!

My name is Dustin, from texas. I used to mess around with phone and computers when I was growing up. Things have come a long long way since then. So I'm trying to pick back up my old hobby of building phones, but now I'm wanting to go further and learn the whole programming side of it. I know a little, basically what I've researched online, which some of it I found useful, some of it not. I have lots of questions and a lot of junk phones. I am wanting to learn everything I can because I enjoy this. So if I sound silly trying to explain or ask please forgive me thank yall for having me.
