It gets really difficult to do backup otherwise.
And I also do 'tar' in TWRP sometimes, to archive specific folders. How do I let TWRP see the USB, so I can specify an external USB OTG as the tar destination folder? As it is now, I have to specify internal memory, and someday there will not be enough space in internal storage for tar file creation....

i can push files to the devices but i cant pull from the internal sd so i wanted to know how to format the internal sd
[bump]
Would like to know this too.
This might seem pretty basic, and it's really obvious to me at least...
Wouldn't you plug the phone in via usb and select mount usb, and then just use fdisk/mkfs/fsck?
You wouldn't even need to use adb for that
I've had the Captivate for a couple of months now and am on xda reading everyday (my wife says I'm obsessed) -- I have yet to find the cause/solution for my problem. I've searched and found similar topics, but I'm not sure if they really apply to my issue.
This problem has followed me to a couple of different ROMs. I started with stock Eclair, Serendipity 5.xx, Cognition 4.1, stock Froyo, and then back to Cognition 4.1.1. I don't recall exactly when the issue started, but I think it was around Cog4.1/stock Froyo.
In Android, I can see it just fine as /sdcard/external_SD (normally use Linda manager). I can copy/move files to/from without any issues. If I plug the phone into the computer, I can access both internal and external SD cards with no problems.
Anyway, CWM 2.5.1.3 -Voodoo Lagfix will not see/mount my external SD card. Attempting to mount /sd-ext produces the error:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 (*NOTE: I've seen posts with this message, but under slightly different circumstances)
(File Exists)
Error mounting SDEXT:!
If, however, I go to "choose zip from sdcard" and then navigate to "external_SD" it will "go" -- however this is **NOT** my external SD card, it appears to be a separate partition. My actual external SD has lots of folders and files, but the CWM "external_SD" has two files that I copied to it attempting to troubleshoot the issue.
A few minutes ago, within Android, I found that if I unmount my external SD, when I navigate to "external_SD", I don't see the files on my true external SD (as expected), but instead I see the partition with my two test files.
I apologize for this lengthy post, but I am at a loss and don't know what else to try. If this has been covered somewhere else, again, I apologize and would greatly appreciate pointing my in the right direction.
Thanks much!

how big is this partition?
**i think** somewhere along the road you clicked "partition sd card" in clockwork recovery.
use windows: Start> Administrative tools > "computer management" > "disk management" tree > edit/delete/expand/shrink partitions manually.
Checked partitions in Windows. The mystery "external_SD" wasn't a partition. it was a plain folder named external_SD (don't remember creating that folder, but probably did). I deleted the folder. I still get the same message in CWM.
When connected to the computer, the internal storage shows as FAT32, capacity 13.03GB (single partition); the external storage shows as FAT32, capacity 7.6GB (which is correct - also single partition).
Just for the record, this issue doesn't appear to be creating any stability or performance problems. I want to figure this out just because...
I appreciate the help thus far.

Anyone have any other ideas of how to get my external SD card to mount in CWM?

i have this trouble too on speedmod_k13c kernel.
i want to place and store all my roms and patches on external sd, but now I'm afraid to do it
maybe it's need to create folder with special name on internal SD (ext-sd for example), which will be point of mount.
unfortunately, CWM don't echo detailed information about error even

Flashing different ROMs can lead to this. It's always a good idea to remove your external SD when flashing.
Try dumping the contents of the card to your PC with a card adapter, then reformat using this:
http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter20.html
Use the FULL (ERASE ON) setting and leave FORMAT SIZE ADJUSTMENT off.
When you put the files back on, only put the data, don't put any system settings etc back on.
Ok -- I will try this when I get home tonight.
Thanks,

Hi all,
Just got me an Xperia T, very happy with it.
Only thing I am having trouble understanding is how the file system works, please let me try and explain.
I have a 16gb micro SD card in the device and it also has 16gb of internal storage.
When I mount the device to windows it shows two drives (Internal Storage and SD Card), now these are pretty obvious as to which each one is.
Now my quandary: When I use astro file manager to browse the phone the file system is different (in fact pretty much the opposite).
The micro SD card shows up as "ext_card" and the internal storage (I think) shows up as "sdcard" and then there is another folder called "int_storage" that is empty.
Is this correct?
Could someone please clarify this for me?
Thanks,
Dave
Yes, this is the way it's supposed to be.
When you connect to the PC using MTP, you mount SDcard and ext_card from mnt.
Sent from my elegant Xperia™ Ion using xda premium app.
Cheers for the super fast response!
I thought that was how it was working but it was just a little confusing since it swaps around the name of each drive when plugged into windows.
Thanks again.
The way the T handles internal storage is a little odd...
Older devices have the "internal SD" formatted as FAT32.
Newer Android devices have this trick called emulated storage, where a FUSE module does special permissions magic to allow /data/media (on an ext4 system) to be mounted to /sdcard
The T is a little odd in that instead of using /data/media, it has int_storage or something like that, which is then remapped via FUSE to /sdcard. It's the only device I know of to have the internal SD formatted as ext4 but not "unified" internal storage (e.g. /sdcard is just a directory under /data)
Didn't really understand any of that.
But it's nice to know that I was right and it does handle the storage a little strangely (I deduced that much from your post at least).
Hi,
I'm trying to enlarge internal memory size through repartitioning internal memory.
There are many threads about it and obviously all of them include warning: you can brick your phone so please make a backup.
So I found out it's quite easy with adb and dd command but ...
"But" is my external sdcard is FAT32 (there is no other working on GT-N7000 Android 4.1.2) and there is max filesize 4GB.
And my UMS partition has about 12GB.
First I've tried to find out how to split the archive to volumes - no luck - utilities like gzip or tar does not allow it.
Then I've tried to change the file system for ext sdcard - no luck - there is only FAT32 possible.
Also I've tried to mount the NAS somehow - no luck.
So what is the way to make backup of my 12GB UMS partition?
If not partition - is it enough to copy file system over ADB (for UMS it's /data folder I believe) ?
I hope there is no other thread about it.
If so, I'm sorry for the spam.

I recently purchased a 64GB USB/OTG combo flash drive, but having trouble using it as my backup drive for Titanium Backup.
Currently on Nexus 6 CM13 nightly 20160412. The phone actually mounts the USB without the help of Stickmount, and is visible to both the Android system AND ES File Explorer, but it just can't be seen by Titanium Backup. Anyone have a solution? I've tried with and without Stickmount, but Stickmount actually doesn't seem to make any difference in anything.
And actually, now that I try, it won't mount on TWRP either. It's formatted NTFS. Unfortunately my computer is on Windows 10 and will only format in NTFS or exFAT and my phone/ES File Explorer wouldn't even recognize the OTG Flash drive when it was formatted in exFAT.
I'm sure SOMEONE is using otg usb to backup TWRP and TiBu, right? What's your setup? Thanks!
OK, so got USB OTG to work with TWRP by formatting my USB OTG flash drive to FAT32. This was difficult because it's not an option in Windows 10... only exFAT and NTFS, neither of which worked in TWRP. I had to download the following program to format my drive to FAT32:
http://www.verbatim.com/index/search.php?words=fat32+tool
Still trying to get the drive to be seen by TiBu though... can't find it anywhere... =/
Ah hah... I got it... so after much fumbling around, I have my drive formatted in FAT32, StickMount is NOT needed with Marshmallow. You go to TiBu, Menu, Preferences, Backup folder location, and click on "Storage provider" and change to "DocumentProvider storage". From there, you need to click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner that say "Show Internal Memory" and then, for some reason, the USB OTG drive pops up... select that, and then TiBu can backup to the external flash drive. Not so straightforward. Hope this helps someone else.
