Hi All
Before I buy this phone I'd like to know if the stock camera app supports RAW and also if this is exposed for 3rd party apps as I'd like to use Open Camera.
Thanks in advance...
Steve
No and Yes
Hi.
I have Mi 9 since 4 days.
With stock camera you can't use raw.
But if you install Camera 2 API and enables it, you can use Open Camera for shooting in raw (in stock camera not).
It saves in DNG format and Photoshop CC with Camera Raw 11.2 is able to open it without problems.
Hi @superangelitoso
Thanks very much for taking the time to check this out.
Did you have to root the phone to enable camera2 api? If not, how did you enable it?
Kind Regards
Steve

The Google camera ports have a RAW option, but in all honesty I've not thoroughly tested to see if it properly works....
Hi @cd993
Thanks for your reply. The reason I'm asking is I have a P20 Pro which does not offer RAW for 3rd parties an despite may requests, I don't think they will. Flagship hardware, barge software lol.
Any road up, if the mi 9 offers the support, I can use open camera which will then plug the many holes in the Huawei stock app.
I'm just on the cusp of buying the mi 9 and funnily enough am in Spain and will visit Barcelona a few times so could buy one here.
If anyone can confirm raw for 3rd party apps and how they achieved it, I'd be most grateful
Cheers
Steve
The stock app does not have raw support, but the phone have the support of it, so you can take raw pictures with 3rd party apps. I'm using Google Camera, to take raw pictures.

Could you add link to DNGs from Mi9?
Hi All
OK so I'm in Spain on my hols and came across a mobile shop so I bought the 6/128GB global version for €499 or £425.
I'm still playing with it but have found out the following:
Camera 2 Probe reports that HW Level 3 is OK for the front and rear camera. Also RAW is support is available out of the box for both the front and rear camera.
There does seem to be an issue here. Camera2 Probe reports the maximum photo size is 4000x3000 rather than 8000x6000.
Both Open Camera and Hedgecam report they can take 8000x6000 images, and they do this correctly for jpegs, but for DNGs the saved image is only approx. 24MB and viewing the files shows that they are only 4000x3000, or 12mp.
So it looks like the RAW exposed is actually the 12MP telephoto camera. Bummer. I really want 48MP raw.
I'll post up a RAW and a jpeg sample from Open Camera later this morning.
Cheers

Try to use GCam port from other thread or Lightroom apk from play store. Just use camera build in Lightroom, check DNG, and take photo, then edit it as you wish then export full size JPG (without full version of apk there is no option to export DNG, but exported JPG should be still much better and unprocessed than stock cam)
Ok So here's a couple of samples. Both were taken at the same time at 8000x6000 with OC set to save a jpeg and a dng.

Thanks so much! I couldn't find MI9 DNG files in whole internet ;p
Firstly, I'm so impressed with clarity of the image! Noise is nice, not too smooth, but lenses are not the best quality, they are soft. Also I think that this sensor has low dynamic range (unprocessed), but anyway for a smartphone, quality is jawdropping Compared to my compact camera Sony RX100III, Mi9 is better!
If you want you can post some more samples
Edit:
There is 200% crop of your RAW and jpg Huuuge difference! Maybe RAW is softer but has more details and it's not oversharped, and look at the colors

Bummer. I wonder if the RAW output is the 48mp sensor but with pixel binning? In Open Camera if I put my finger over the middle lens, it blocks the picture.
I really wanted 48MP RAW.

I just went back to my P20 Pro. A 40MP RAW is 79MB which is compressed. If I covert it with DCRAW, the file ends up as just under 120MB which is reassuring as 24 bit uncompressed images should be about 3 x the MP in MB eg 40mp x 3 = 120MB.
I checked the P20 Pro raw image size and is 5472 x 7296 so is proper 40MP dump.
I'm now in the position where Huawei don't expose RAW for 3rd parties so you have to use their *crap* software and Xiaomi offer Level 3 Camera2 but probably pixel bin the images before providing the RAW giving only 12MP images.
If someone has a suggestion on how to fix this, they will defo be on my xmas list
Cheers

The DNG raw file has some good detail for a phone.
The photo was shot at ISO 89 so it's expected to have very low noise.
This is the jpg file developed with Capture One Pro: https://gofile.io/?c=l4IuRB
Good detail even at 100% zoom, quite good for a phone.
Would you be able to share more DNG raw files, this time shot at higher ISO levels so we can get a good idea of the sensor performance and noise at lower light levels ?
Thanks :good:

Thank you for the DNG samples.
The file size is quite small for DNG raw, only around 10 Mb.
The Mi9 DNG raw files are over 22Mb.
Maybe with a different Gcam app the DNG files will have more data?

Upper one is gcam, lower one is open camera, both raws edited with same preset in Lightroom. Since the google raws still use merging, they get all the benefit as jpeg... I recommend using hdr+ enhanced with 8 frames, but it can make merging mistakes; something like merging a carpet with table, it looks weird, so when that happens, just use plain hdr+ - which has a bit worse noise, but makes less mistakes, also I recommend at least 80 sharpen and 40 saturation, and lowering highlights by 100...

What kind of file sizes are you folks seeing with this camera in the different megapixel modes? Thinking about picking one up but wondering how much compression there is. Currently on a 6t which is terrible.

Depends on the complexity of the scene, I have seen the 10MP range from under 1MB > over 8MB on my standard P30
Just shot 10MP vs 40MP in the house to test, 10MP was 1.76MB and 40MP was 5.19MB

P30Pro compared to P20Pro
I've just upgraded from the P20Pro to the P30Pro and at the same settings the P30Pro is giving me images with less than half the file size of the earlier model. I'm really surprised by this...is there more compression being added, or do you think that the camera might be faulty? Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.

There's way too much compression.
Try zooming in on a photo that wasn't taken as a raw shot. It's horrendous!

If you want better jpeg IQ, shoot in RAW in Pro mode and you'll get jpegs directly from the RAW file, bypassing all the over-processing that you get in auto mode, this is the only reason I am so committed to Huawei, they are the only OEM that does this, all other brands just process the jpeg as per normal auto mode when you shoot in Pro mode with RAW.
With Huawei the jpeg you get from Pro mode with RAW enabled comes directly from the RAW file and is way more natural etc. see crop below, top crop is from auto mode, bottom crop is from the jpeg from RAW in Pro mode, massive difference.

Can't say I agree with any of that.
RAW from my P30 pro is vastly inferior to the Raw shots from my Poco F1 and my old OP5 .
Jpegs in pro mode are no different in size or structure to those taken in Auto. They both have the same libjpeg applied to them.
There's an excessive amount of compression applied and artificial noise reduction, post sharpening.
a 40mp shot should not be coming out at 6mb .
Raw come out under exposed in most situations and require excessive amounts of noise reduction in anything other than bright sunlight.
*IF* we get camera api2 then it might be more usable as it will allow a bit better fine control, but as it stands the entire lens matrix code appears to be broken.
And in case you were wondering, yes I do have a lot of experience of camera driver code, at both kernel and userspace level. Unfortunately with huawei closed approach I can't even see what they are doing for definite. I do know that this will be my last device from them though as I don't like the results of the camera or the closed off approach.

dont you see the difference in the crops?? compression is similar yes but the processing is way different, and I'm not talking of the RAW files but the jpeg that comes directly from the RAW file, which is very different to the jpeg in auto mode. See another crop below taken now in my office, left side from jpeg (auto mode), right side jpeg (from RAW in Pro mode) there is a big difference in processing, the libjpeg does not get used in taking the jpeg directly from RAW.
My Samsung Note 9 RAWs are far worse, and my iPhone Xs are also nothing special, for me the Huawei's are no worse than anything out there the fact that I can get a jpeg from the RAW data and just tweak it (but have that natural unprocessed look) is by far more useful to me. If you want to process all your own RAWs then things may be slightly different, but I see no big differences in the RAW files across OEMs, but this ability of Huawei phones to give you a jpeg directly from the RAW file automatically is a big plus for me.
Have a look at amir's dng processor for better image manipulation from raw
https://t.me/appforks
Bear in mind he's constantly tweaking how it works so there's a lot of versions on there too play with.
There's no such thing as a jpeg direct from raw.
It will always be processed.
And no I don't see any difference when zoned between the Pro mode jpeg and the normal.
Would any of you guys buy a camera with a built-in phone then complain its no good because the phone wasn't up to your expectations?
If I was as consumed by top quality photography as you guys seem to be I'd buy a dedicated camera that had the specs I most wanted.
FWIW I'm more than pleased with the results of the photos that I take. And the phones not too bad either ?

How very lovely for you.
My daughter was over the moon with her toy camera for years. Everyone else realised it was about as effective as rubbing vaseline in your eyes them looking at a Jackson Pollock to try to replicate a Constable haywain.
When she ended up with a decent camera she realised just had bad the old one had been. She was quite miffed.
If you buy a phone that's supposedly one of the best available and sold as coming with one of the highest rated camera systems.
Then that camera system turns out to get worse after a software update, I think you're fairly entitled to be a wee tad disgruntled and should expect more.
Personally I don't want to carry another camera with me.
The phone is there and available for producing photos when I need them quickly and immediately.
It's why I brought it.
By your logic, if I want to know where I am I should buy a standalone GPS, f*@k knows how I'd carry a typewriter around all day if I ever need to type a message out!
Ooh best not forget the pigeon as well.
Nope all in one devices that do as they are advertised to do. That's the future- oh no hang on that's supposed to be now-
Ideally the software in the phone software shouldn't be preventing the hardware from producing decent results.
But this is.
I offered to swap my p30 Pro for my old Poco f1 that my son now uses. He declined after testing it by taking some photos, he likes his f1.
The phone is great, the camera software is appalling.
Lol
RAW is ok, but requires a lot of tweaking and filespace.
The major problem is that when I take pictures, getting a 40 megapixel jpeg file which has too much compressing losing all fine details and causing 'blocks', typical jpeg compression artefacts.
Is there any app that can capture RAW files with the 64MP camera?
I understand it's actually an 80MP camera, but 64MP jpg's are produced by the camera app.
Thanks.

yes must get 64 mp raw files
It does appear as though the X2 Pro can now capture RAW files!
When in the camera and you select Expert, you can toggle whether to capture in RAW format or not. The phone takes two pictures in one shot; one in JPG, the other in RAW
