Removing Android and installing Haiku on Teclast X98 Air III - Teclast X98 Air 3G

Hi,
I have a Teclast X98 Air III tablet (M5C5) and I would like to remove Android and try running Haiku on it.
Haiku Project
Haiku is an open-source operating system that specifically targets personal computing. Inspired by BeOS, Haiku is fast and easy to learn but very powerful.
www.haiku-os.org
There will probably be issues and missing drivers, but it seems like an interesting OS to run on this kind of hardware.
Can anyone point me in the right direction how I should proceed? I don’t want to brick the tablet, or otherwise ruin my chances of using it.
The tablet is currently collecting dust in a drawer so it’s not my main machine.
Thanks in advance!

Is that a serious question?

Seems like a legitimate question to me, ViewSonic's ViewPad 10 already does Android-Windows dualbooting, and XDA itself has a thread about dualbooting the HD2 with WM and Android.
If the OP's asking about Android and iOS specifically though, then probably the answer might be no. If someone could do it though, it might actually be a good thing for the Android crowd: shows the Apple fans that choice and customizability is a good thing.
I was thinking the other day that my Tab would be pretty cool if running Windows Thin PC, saw info and a download on the MS site the other day while working on my wifes netbook.
I dont see a problem with either a full working version of Ubuntu or Windows on the GT and Android, or just the full OS. Seems reasonable to put an OS on what is essentially a tablet PC.
I would think its just a matter of a bios, and loading the OS, but I am not a programmer, so I could very well be wrong.
But....I'd load Windows or Ubuntu on the tab if it gave me the 3G ability as well as all other functions.

IIRC I think there's already a thread on XDA on bringing Ubuntu to the Tab. With Windows it might be trickier. The ViewSonic ViewPad 10 runs on Intel Atom, which is already used by other netbooks that run Windows. Windows might not be designed to run on ARM however, which is used on many Android devices. Processor design differences may be the key factor in porting the OS. (I've gotten Gingerbread to run on my Atom netbook though, alas I still couldn't get the touch screen to work)
Would be the first to jump onto dualbooting Android with Windows if it ever comes to fruition though; I'm a Windows developer and it'll be cool if I could write small apps and use them on my Tab.

You can't run Windows because there is currently no ARM version, though MS say that they will support ARM in Windows 8, but by the time this sees the light of day, the Tab will be obsolete.
There is a thread in the dev forum about porting Ubuntu to the Tab, but I believe it is still a long way from fully functional.

Dave
I already posted the question about fully functions in ubuntu for the tab. Specially the phone and sms functions but they denied it. I keep following and hope some day it will work

Thanks for the responses guys. Let's hope one day it would be possible!

since both iOS and Android are ARM based in most cases, you could probably make it happen.
Both Android and iOS are Unix based, so we could achieve this.
Also
It could be easier to port iOS than Honeycomb because iOS source code is avalaible for public, for improvements and bug seeking.
So, Yes, we could have dual OS on the tab, it could be windows, Ubuntu, Maemo, iOS and even Symbian

iOS source code is most certainly not available!

[Q] Do you think Android will come to Desktop PC's? And would you use it?

Hey Guys I wanted to know your Opinion about the future of the Operating Systems and especially Android.
I think in the near future Windows 8 will run on Smartphones, Tablets, Notebooks, PC's and TV's. Mac OS and iOS will merge into one OS for all devices as well.
Android 4.0 runs on all devices but there is no official support for x86 CPU's and there are no ARM desktop CPU's out, but I think Android is going to come to the PC as well.
What do you think? Will Android come to Desktop Computers and if you think it will, would you use it?
Also do you think it's better to stick to one OS for all devices?
Pretty sure they will try to do it but until now android didn't show us that they collaborate really well with the device producers.
This resulted in the fact that we have pretty good android devices that will receive the new operating system ICS after a lot of time.
We still have devices that have the capability of supporting gingerbeard but gingerbeard doesn't support them so the official updates are stuck to Froyo.
If they want to move to desktop pc's they will have to do some serious work about the drivers support and make them work as they should. (Point nvidia tegra 2)
I am very positive about the capabilities of Android. We seeing it lots of things recently...now that Intel is working with supporting Android I think de possibility of Android running no pc has greatly increased and the fact is when it comes to compatibilty Android is really flexible.

Mobile phone's current normal storage size - 8 GB?
PC's current normal storage size - 1000 GB?
Wouldn't it be overkill for a phone and "underkill" for a PC to have the same OS on both?
Mhh tell that the Windows 8 developers, they are building the same OS for tablets and Computers.
But I see your point. My Windows folder takes up 25 GB of storage.
I wonder how they solved that problem.
Yeah... don't take me wrong, I would love to have an OS folder on my PC of 200 MB... I just don't really see it happening.
I'm guessing it should be something like Firefox and Internet Explorer... Firefox is really small and fast, because it has (arguably) one tenth of IE's capabilities. In order to have Firefox with as much functionalities as IE you need one hundred plug-ins... and then it's as big and slow as IE...
Ok, this is may be a very bad comparison, I don't want to start a flame war between FF and IE fans, I just wanted to make my point

X86 Ubuntu and Wine running on xt890?

I've been hunting around for any development progress for the K900 when I stumbled across this (Along with rumors of Wine for android x86 )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GT9lZDplJ8
The title translates to " Launching Ubuntu x86 + Wine under Android x86"
I know amost nothing about VNC but I'm guessing he did something similar to this but perhaps using ubuntu touch?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1966984
I'm trying to figure out if this is a worthwile way to run old windows games on a phone, rather than using QEMU on my Note 2. Are there any advantages to this? Or should I stick with QEMU until the next generation of intel phones are out?
My experience with Wine has been very positive, generally being more stable than running the games in Windows had ever been. I'd imagine that keeping everything x86 the whole way is probably good. QEMU has been slow enough and the reliability has been spotty enough to the point where I generally dont bother anymore. =(
Thank you for sharing this! i really, really hope they will continue developing this for our razr i!!
I've managed to do the same on my Orange San Diego.
If I remember correctly, I just followed the tutorials for installing ubuntu in chroot on android, but I used a x86 image instead of an arm image. Can't remember if I had to do custom stuff.
Then it was basically installing wine, like you'd do on an Ubuntu pc.
Wine worked, but Vmware/virtualbox didn't (I guess it's because ubuntu ran in chroot). I was/am hoping to run a full windows on a phone, but no-one seems to be interested in it, and I don't have the skills/knowledge to do it
Since this phone has an unlocked bootloader, you'll probably be able to install ubuntu directly (without chroot) (good chance you'll find a step by step guide for this phone), so maybe you could run vmware/vbox too. Can't try that on my orange, since it has a locked bootloader, and it doesn't look like it's getting unlocked any time soon.
If any developer would be able to have a look at this...? I'd change phones if someone managed to get it up and running, I'd guess
Terror Factor, How are speed and stability when running Ubuntu/wine through chroot?
I think there were some people trying to dual boot. I think there are probably some serious obstacles though. I belive this particular chipset has a proprietary driver which could make it difficult to use. The next generation of phones will use what is basically intels integrated grapics on a soc. Those might be the first to be able to dual boot a full desktop os. There is a phone out now in China, the K900 that uses the updated clovertrail plus chip that is supposed to be linux compatible. But it still seems to have a Power VR chip for grapics =(
Other than that. I could see there being issues with perhaps drive partitioning and installing the boot loader (grub, etc). I suppose it also depends how the boot sytem works. I don't belive phones use any type of BIOS. I dunno.
Fujistsu makes a phone/computer (loox f-07c) that runs full windows. It's kind of a bulky and inelegant solution though.
I can't remember any stability issues, but it's been a few months and I only messed around with it for maybe half an hour after it was installed (noticed I couldn't run virtualbox/vmware, so I was a whole lot less interested). The stock apps that came with wine worked fine (notepad for example). I can't remember if I installed anything else in wine though.
That Fujitsu is pretty big, and quite outdated hardware wise. Might be worth buying if I could find a cheap one on ebay, but battery life will probably suck and I am guessing it'll be way to expensive for what it is.
Once the intel cpu's are getting more popular for smartphones, I am guessing we'll eventually see a full desktop OS on one of them. That might be a year or two though, I'm afraid

How can install Ubuntu Touch on a generic Android smartphone?

Hello, thanks for having a look at my thread: I’m curious on how I can run Ubuntu Touch on my Android phone. To cut a long story short, my brother bought me an iPhone 7 replica which operates on a custom ROM. I’m very disappointed if I won’t be able to flash this with Ubuntu Touch because the hardware is impressive. The internal memory is 128GB, albeit I have yet to confirm with the rest of the specifications.
Are there are any resources for Ubuntu Touch installations for Android Phones?
I had a look at their homepage, but none of these phones are an iPhone 7 replica (generic Android smartphone).
I’d truly appreciate any help that I can get.
Thanks!
Additional details: I'm looking to replace the entire Android operating system with Ubuntu Touch.

About me

I'm someone who likes to get the best out of my computer hardware. I love Linux mint, and still have a Windows computer. I line Android phones, and tablets, but sometimes the software goes unsupported after some time and then drastic steps must be taken to keep using the hardware. That is my interest in xda. Looking forward to modding my Nvidia shield tablet k1. Cheers!, B
Linux Mint brings you lots of pleasure. I really don't understand why Windows keeps its popular position. Hope you'll have a nice time here on XDA. It brings you to all parts of the world with extreme expertise.
Just learn how to use it .....
Enjoy a nice stay in a wonderful new week
