How To Guide LineageOS survival guide and FAQ for Zenfone 8 - ASUS ZenFone 8

The goal of this thread is to provide a comprehensive list of resources for LineageOS for ASUS Zenfone 8, since I didn't find this at a central place yet. (at least those things that are not yet covered in the official documentation / wiki) Please DO NOT ask questions in this thread, instead ask them in the forum or in one of the LineageOS threads. But feel free to use this thread to share an interesting HowTo or insight that might be relevant for other users. I may also add more resources here in the future.
Missing features compared to stock ROMBattery Charge LimitLimiting the battery charge is not an Android feature, it is provided by ASUS. Therefore, it will not be available in LineageOS. You can find a workaround in this thread. Root required.
Low brightness DC dimmingLike other OLED phones, the ASUS Zenfone 8 suffers from PWM flickering in lower brightness. The ASUS Zenfone 8 has an option to enable DC dimming to mitigate PWM flickering in low brightness. Stupidly, however, it is an option, implemented by ASUS, not available in Android itself or any custom ROM. A workaround was mentioned in this thread.
Set display refresh rateIn custom ROMs like LineageOS, you can only change the refresh rate with an adb command: See this answer. The change is permanent until you change it again with the same adb command.
Good camera appThe default camera app on Android is only mediocre. Use Wichaya GCam Port instead. It also provides configs for Zenfone 8. To use it, you either need Google apps / microG or install Gcam-Services-Provider.
You may notice that the video function has a tinge of green. This can be solved by disabling video stabilization. Other users have reported to get better results with Shamim's GCam Port, some use multiple ports for different conditions. --> Discussion thread.
Some users reported that with the most recent Wichaya GCam Port (v1.6), they get almost as good results as with stock camera. A config file with improved 2x zoom can be found here. (requires LOS>=19)
Google appsBy default, LineageOS provides no Google Apps. You can either install the original Google Apps as described in the LOS wiki, or use MicroG + a bunch of replacement apps (K-9 mail, OsmAnd) instead.
MicroG is a free open source reimplementation of the Google services, but see the limitations here. For MicroG, you need to use the MicroG fork of LineageOS which allows signature spoofing. It comes pre-installed with MicroG and F-Droid. MicroG website + Download: https://lineage.microg.org/ Installation works the same as LineageOS, however, due to a bug in the MicroG build pipeline, the image might be missing some firmware files. This is relevant if you want to upgrade your phone to a newer version. See the appendix for details on this.
Extra featuresRoot accessRoot access is required for some of the workarounds listed above. But it also gives you access to some extra apps, like AFWall+.
Currently, Magisk is the way to go. It has some install instructions. If you strictly follow their instructions, you will need to patch the boot image file. And yes, the ASUS Zenfone 8 has a vbmeta partition. Both files you need, boot.img and vbmeta.img, are not directly visible to you, to get them, see Extract image files from payload.bin in the appendix.
However, a few users have reported that you can also install Magisk via. the recovery image, see here. In principle, this is a much easier way, but not officially endorsed by the Magisk authors.
AppendixExtract image files from payload.binSome of the steps here require to extract images files (.img) from the customROM. In LineageOS, however, you will notice that no image files are present in the .zip file:

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
What you need to do is to extract those images from the payload.bin. This can be done with the payload-extractor, in both Windows or Linux. For Windows you need to install a recent python and from there you can install the required protobuf using pip.
Upgrading to a newer version of LineageOS for MicroGUnfortunately, due to a bug in the MicroG build pipeline, the "LineageOS for MicroG" build might be missing some firmware files required to successfully upgrade to a newer major version. (e.g. LOS18.1 to 19) If you are still on stock ROM, the best option is to install a stock Android matching the Android version of LineageOS first. (e.g. Android 12 for LOS19)
If you already installed an older version of LineageOS (for MicroG), you can get the missing firmware images from the original LineageOS (w/o MicroG) build and then flash it on your phone right after you upgrade to the newest LineageOS for MicroG.
To do this, extract the payload.bin of both LineageOS original and LineageOS for MicroG. Now compare what image files are missing, similar to this thread. Next, for each of the images, flash them to both "_a" and "_b" partition, like this:
Bash:
fastboot flash <image_name>_a <image_name>.img
fastboot flash <image_name>_b <image_name>.img
Besides that, just follow the regular LineageOS upgrade instructions.
! Important, do it in this order: Sideload 19.1 build, reboot to fastbootd to flash all firmware partitions to both slots, then reboot.

Dirty Unicorns Semi GSI for Samsung Devices
By CodeFox & OpenSauce9810
I'm no longer maintaining this thread, check the note 9 thread here for latest updates
What is this?
This is a Semi Generic System Image. That means it's a generic system image that's been optimized as much as possible for our Samsung Devices.
How the heck do I flash this?
It's slightly different than flashing a zip, so here's what you need to do.
Download the image file
Flash Endurance GSI Kernel in TWRP
Flash BRJ6 Vendor
Flash the System Image to your System Partition
Optional if you want root (but reccomended): Reboot to recovery again then flash your choice of Magisk. I use 17.1 as I can get galaxy wear to work with that version.
Reboot your device and you should be good to go! No need to flash gapps as they're included.
03.12.2018
Initial Release
05.12.2018
Updated sources to 9.0 r21 release. (December Security Patch)
Gapps included, (dialer and messenger also included so you won't start without a phone or sms app)
Bootanimation changed to reduce boot times
Tweaks to ambient play ticker so it clears when you clear media notifications
Further performance tweaks thanks to @malinathani animations transition smoother now.
06.12.2018
PHH Settings Removed.
Dual Speaker permanently integrated, will always persist and no longer needs to be activated.
Enhanced brightness ranges permanently integrated.
Sync latest DU Sources
Potential ratio fix for S9/S9+ Devices.

You need to install GAPPS 9.0 after rebooting into recovery following install of system image. This should be mentioned in the instructions.
Then you will get the usual install section after boot up and the usual google apps etc. I used GAPPS 9.0 nano.
All working well on my S9+.

My bad. It's copy pasta from my PE thread. I'll update it tomorrow. It's a bit of a nightmare I've got so many threads to maintain haha.
Is there any way to use edge screen notifications?
Best rom atm! Perfect to set it up just the way you want it without bloat apps.
Just had to change Product.model to pixel xl in build props to get higher quality on Facebook vids.
Anyways, New daily for me. Thank you. ?
I can't flash the system image . Why is it ending in .xz ?
Its a compressed file, I just used 7zip to extract it.

Is Bluetooth working for you?
which camera you're using on this ROM?
Didn't work for me, had two issues:
-Internal Data not being seen
- No network connection
- Says not to flash gapps, but it is needed as nothing is installed.
For me now, this isn't a usable ROM.

Fingerprint in 3rd-party-apps
Hello @All,
i installed this good rom on my G965F and everything is working - BIG thx @devs...
I have only one question/issue: With my registered fingerprint i can unlock the screen - this works perfect, but in 3rd-party-apps i get an error with fingerprint and i cant use my fingerprint in these apps (e.g. banking app). Anyone know how to use my fingerprint in 3rd-party-apps? This is not working on all Pie-(s)GSI, not only on DU...

Code:
LineageOS is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 10 (Q), which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.
LineageOS is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. You will need to provide your own Google Applications package (gapps). LineageOS does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.
Base source code is available in the LineageOS Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to the project, please visit our Gerrit Code Review.
Working:
AOD
Audio
Boot
Bluetooth
Camera
Display
Flash
FOD
GPS
Hotspot
Quick charge (almost 30W)
RIL
SafteyNet gets bypassed without using magisk
Selinux is strict (not permissive)
Sensors
Video Playback
Widevine L1 (for example 1080p Netflix)
Wifi
Wifi Display
Bugs so far:
AOD has a unlock issue (blackscreen) if AntiFlicker is enabled
If you find one take a logcat when the error occurs. If you don't know how to take a logcat, take a look here. Then write me a PM. Also please tell me if you have gapps/magisk installed, which version and how to reproduce the bug.
Changelog:
You can find the changelog here
Variants:
Vanilla: pure LineageOS
Gapps: Via, GCamGo, Gapps

(Yes you have to wipe product. The old partition name was cust, but we use it now as product)
Format data
Reboot to recovery
Download lineage and copy it to your device
Flash lineage
(Download NikGapps core (only stable not canary) - other versions have problems with the clock)
(If you want to flash a different version except core and basic you have to enable the force install to /system in the NikGapps.config. You have been warned !)
For Magisk users:
Please boot lineage fully up
Reboot to recovery
Flash Magisk
Update the ROM:
Download the newest Lineage version
Copy it to your phone
Flash lineage in the recovery

Open the Lineage zip
Copy the boot.img from the zip to your phone
Flash the boot.img in the recovery
Flash Magisk

Sorry, my mistake, appologies to you. Camera doing shots in big size. But not pure stable (sometimes freeze or force closed when switch mods), but other things is fully right in ROM, good job. (I have strange problem, after flash and boot, connect with PC good and transfer working, but after some minutes, if i remove all from backup, connect with PC don´t work, but it is which some my apk or settings, I don´t know...)
upgraded from rr to this rom. works good. testting Gcam from burial v8. for me works nice.
What manifest file should I use to build this from source?
Will this ever become a supported device?

Can anyone recommend gapps with google setup wizard?
NikiGapps has issues with google setup at first boot.
Nevermind, that's sorted.
Nice work. Waiting for Pixel Experience android 11, lineage os is just too plain for me
Very smooth and fluid rom, kudos to the dev.
Only thing fingerprint, which isn't as accurate most of the time.
Thanks for the great work

How is now your experience with Gcam? Is still fully working without freezing and closing after switch between lenses?
And how resolutions of pictures and size? Working with full potential of original lenses or pictures are smaller and not so good?
I try this ROM only few minutes and i have a problem with freezing and closing (Burial, i think) and quality looking not so good like with same GCam on miui ROM? But maybe I am wrong.
I want clear android very much for this device, thanks developers, but MiNote10 is photo mobile, so need fully working camera.
Thanks for your experience.

Getting a 404 error now :-(
OmniROM - zenfone8
Using the ROM in the original post is great. Do we report bugs here?
SIM 1 doesn't work. It'll show your carrier but won't work. I tried with 1 and 2 SIMs at once. Only SIM 2 will work.
When you select the option to hide the nav bar (which is great because then it pushes the keyboard down), even if you're using gesture navigation, the back gesture stops working. Hiding the pill isn't as good because the keyboard and some apps leave a huge gap at the bottom.
Not necessarily a bug, but it looks like the GAPPs version can't get system updates? What's the best way to have Google apps but also utilize the system updates feature. (I know there probably aren't any updates available at the moment.)

OmniROM - zenfone8
Woops
I don't know if this is coincidence or ROM-related, but has anyone else had adb and fastboot problems? Since flashing the June version of OmniROM I can't get my computer to recognize my phone in fastboot or recovery ADB. Nothing shows up in Device Manager at all.
Everything works fine from within Android, but once I get into recovery it's just silence. Same symptoms on my Win10 desktop, Win10 laptop, and terminal on OnePlus 5. As far as I'm aware I can't update the ROM, restore factory firmware, or root the phone without fastboot and/or ADB.
EDIT: I tried several other Windows, Linux, and Android devices and none would even acknowledge that I had plugged something in, but yesterday I tried my mom's ASUS laptop and my phone showed up in Device Manager without even needing drivers. I was able to fastboot flash TWRP and update the ROM. I still have no explanation for why so many devices didn't work or why this one did, but at least all of that is behind me.

Is there any improvement about fingerprint and NFC in the new version ?
On the new update the camera is not working. It shows the actual video from camera but once you take a picture it locks up the camera app. Tried a 3rd party camera app and no video on it.

I tested opencamera and it works. If the problem continues in the next builds, I will remove aperture camera and replace it with other software like gcam-ports or OnePlus camera.
There's a new update!!
* Update to Android 13.0.0_r13 from Android 13.0.0_r11
* November Update!
* Add FaceUnlock Support
* Fix problem with Aperture Camera
* Switch to Evolution X kernel with enhanced features
* Introduce Dynamic Partitions (Thanks to AnierinBliss and Terminator-J)
* Add back Photos App as we are having more space

Is there a special way to install this new update? When I try to sideload it in the lineage/pixelexperience recovery I get an error 7 and it won't even attempt to install. Thanks in advance for the help.

I get a error 1 when I try to flash in twrp I have no idea why.
I got the error 1 also recovery error 7 and will not install. I went ahead and tried again and the problem is step 8. Once you boot into Fastbootd all the commands fail and do not take. Initialize the retrofit super partitions for each slot: fastboot wipe-super super_empty.img fastboot set_active other fastboot wipe-super super_empty.img fastboot set_active other. Please let us know if this was just a command issue. I can't get into the system now.
Figured out issue. Everything is good you just need fully updated platform tools and use powershell (admin)

You should not use TWRP to flash it. It is not supported unless built with the required changes for retrofit dynamic partitions.

bluetooth not working
From https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-12-1-unofficial-lineageos-19-1-for-s9-s9-and-n9.4511571/
I used this to get bluetooth working with this crDroid ROM
With Root -> MiXplorer (or similar app) -> Vendor -> Build.prop -> Change ro.product.first_api_level to 29 -> Reboot.
Without Root -> TWRP -> Mount Vendor -> File Manager -> Same as above.
On my Samsung S9 Snapdragon, I started with Magisk rooted stock firmware, May security update and Klabit V6.5 kernel.
I flashed this ROM, FlameGApps-12.1-full-arm64-20220920.zip and Magisk 25.2.
Everything seems to work as expected, except my Google account shows me signed in on a Huawei Nexus 6P.
Does anyone know if the is a crDroid issue or perhaps a FlameGapps issue (I'm asking the same question on the FlameGapps thread)?
How do I get Google to show the correct device?

Helllo friend ..
I get many questions and request for S9 snapdragon roms , are these bootloaders
not always locked? I have only Exynos ..Starlte and this development would be nice to point to
for the Snapdragon users .

Hi Try https://Nikgapps.com or find them on sourceforge , can you tell me if your S9
was bootloader locked and how did you unlock it?
Have a nice weekend .
I tried NikGapps previously and had problems that SafetyNet Attestation won't even run. I don't remember exactly by the checker app YASNAC showed an error something like "not a valid device". Maybe I'll try again. I'm sure if I had already installed the SafetyNet fix under Magisk.
About my S9. I have an international version (Panama). It's easy to unlock bootloader on these versions. It's only the North American (Canada, USA) that can't be easily unlocked. I've seen other threads that mention being able to pay to unlock the NA versions.

@KkjSasuke Is this ROM being actively maintained? Have you submitted it to become an official build for crDroid?
