Well I happened upon an old S8 sitting in a drawer (G950U - Verizon - Android version 9) and am desperately trying to have some fun and root this thing. I cannot for the life of me find a good guide/video that works. Can this phone actually even be rooted? Not sure if anyone will even see this post but figured I'd give it a try. Thx!
I have a verizon s8 too and looking to root also, update here if you find answer!
My wife hates I wont upgrade. My s8 still going g strong (2nd model I got through insurance like 3 years ago).
Anyways, I know that FOREVER we weren't able to root
SM-G950U.
Then a different root came out where it's one you have to do on a PC. They claim the s8 has a 10% brick rate (doing everything correctly)...which steered me away. If I do everything correct I want 0%.
Tonight, I was researching and besides coming across a few posts on here...aupposidly our model is on the list of a 1 click root app.

I will be trying in a few days and will update this thread (and a few older ones I saw people asking in)

So, if/when do you think Verizon will get official lollipop out? (I know speculation is pointless but idrc)
I'm putting 40% on it never comes out, 50% between 2 and 8 months from the d802 and 10% within 2 months of the international g2 getting it (probably next week).
date
My guess would be at the end of March or beginning of April. Probably around the same time the Galaxy S6 and One M9 (or whatever there going to call it) come out. Since it will probably be out on AT&T right before then.

I'm going to say mid-May 2015. Or maybe June. But with VZW, you never know, so maybe December just to screw with everyone.
I still think sometime in the next few weeks to a month since Verizon has been pretty quick to updating phones to lollipop. Granted they still throw all there garbage bloatware. But atleast google has been nice to create ways for people to uninstall it without having to root.
Have you seen this?
http://pressandupdate.com/lg-g2-android-5-0-1-lollipop-update-everything-know/
That article was useless since it tries to blame on the problems on "older hardware". The snapdragon 801 inside the g3 is not much different then the snapdragon 800 inside the g2. It's just companies being lazy and wanting people to buy a new phone every time there is a software update. Especially with the markup for the cost of these devices.
Look at this link someone v posted in another thread. We Verizon users might be first!

It's the source code for Verizon lollipop. Someone said that when the source code came out for f240l a week later the kdz showed up. They're speculating that we may be able to expect lollipop kdz for Verizon in a week

And that link is a download link but look at the source of the download. It shows lg website and the name shows Verizon g2 lollipop version number. I haven't downloaded yet but it's only 273 mb which seems small but if anyone knows about this stuff check it out and let us know.

Somebody try this

So you find a 145mb file for maybe (the verizon variant) that you think is lollipop. And you want someone to try it on a whim. Good luck.

Here u go!!

I think I'll still wait for the next update. Since Lollipop is so hit or miss on phones/tablets. I have a 2012 Nexus 7 which it works great on along with my nexus 9. A friend has 5.0 on his Verizon galaxy s5 and his phone is now laggy and the battery life is garbage.
Verizon sent out lollipop to my wife's M8 last night. Seemed pretty snappy after the install. Guess it will take a week or two before start noticing any small issues though.
I thought LG was supposed to be quick with their updates? How did HTC beat them to it?
Updating now, just got back from vacation, so don't need root and tether that much...
If I do, can always go back to 27A
I'm running stock verizon 5.0.2 lollipop now, runs pretty good. If you have a vs980 try it out
Not sure how to post in the proper thread perhaps a mod could move this post to the peoper one?
Hi this will be my first post. I am seeking guidance to properly root my note 5. After researching this seems to be the most knowledgeable forum but cant find a kernel that works!
First let me explain my situation then I will list all phone specs that i think are necessary.
Im in Canada and was with Bell previously on contract. I had a note 3 which I rooted easily with kingo software. The phone is in great shape still thanks to my otterbox after 2 years. My work offers corporate plans through Roger's so after my Bell contract ended I switched to Rogers corporate plan with the note 5 on a 2 year term. I got the new phone because I was signing up for a new contract and wanted a cheap phone out of the deal. Now that my note 5 isnt rooting properly Im considering sending it back continuing with my corporate plan on my note 3 which works great. The note 5 is awesome so far but if rooting doesnt succeed want my note 3. Rogers gave me a 14 day no questions asked return policy grace period to decide which i have 12 days left. Lastly I purchased a returnable otterbox but a non refundable gorilla glass which has already been installed to on my phone. Just another factor to consider when making this desision as the gorilla glass will be a loss. Id love to keep my note 5 and note 3 as a backup if I get it rooted properly.
Now onto problems Ive had after rooting.. depends on the kernel. Ive had issues mostly with my calls resulting in my note 5 restarting or silence when making calls. One kernel I used froze my phone in the recovery mode screen.. guessing the kernel was invalid.. I have superSu I dont know what Im doing wrong. Im using odin and loading it into the 2nd line i think its under AP. Oh I did the developer option thing already.. oh and I installed proper drivers to my PC twice to make sure.
Lastly heres all the info to hopefully find me the right kernel specific for me.
Samsung note 5
SM-N920W8
With Rogers in Canada
Android version 5.1.1 (Lollipop)
Current kernel Noble kernel v0.1 (most stable but resetting phone during calls)
If there any other info you need to provide me with the right kernel just let me know what you info you require.
I hope to find out within the 14 days if I can keep this phone or not. Realllllly apreciate the help in advance. Bill.
Nobody has any info? Becoming very frustrating
+1 for a friendly bump
I am in the same position as you and recently upgraded to Note 5 as well from Note 3. Honestly, Note 3 with root is by far my favourite phone of all time. I have been reading up on n920w8 threads too and haven't had much luck so hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in.
The one thing that is keeping me from rooting is the fact that others have reported that Samsung/Google Pay won't work after.
btw... have you not tripped knox on our phone yet by flashing one of the kernels?
Yeah the note 3 was great ran smooth loved the os the root ran smooth never had any issues. The note 5 just looks and feels newer but its so unstable I lost calls today dling my taxes then speaking to my lawyer.. I have no landline so Im basically out of a phone right now kind of panicking I need to have a phone but I dont know if I can return it now? Its still within the 14 day grace period can I factory reset and return and stay on the plan the my.note 3? I need to figure something out quick.. I would keep this phone if the root worked but honestly I can go back to the note 3 I can unlock from Bell to Rogers for free right since its rooted?
I can't find any sign of knox on my phone since the root thing wont find it in s finder or anywhere so Im assuming it tripped. Honestly I never used knox on my note 3 either because it was void what does it do? Oh and Google play works fine though..
Im all for keeping the note 5 IF I can get it rooted properly I cant constantly lose calls like this.. Is there anyone out there that has a working kernel or should I attempt to return it? I have like 6 days left..
I was reading that the skyhigh kernel for tmobile is supposed to work. Already have it flashed. Can anyone confirm if this is the right one for Rogers note 5 SM-920W8
So, I just purchased this because I couldn't wait a year to get a new phone to get the Consumer Version.
I got a good deal on it, however.
My questions are pretty simple, but I am having a difficult time searching for white/black answers, so I'm hoping you fine people here at XDA can help..
What are the differences between the Innovator Edition & the Consumer Edition?
The other question I have is, what are the software limitations for the version I have for my Note 4 and the new version for the Note 5? Will I have everything in the app store that they will, etc? Or am I going to be missing a bunch of stuff?
Really mainly concerned about the software aspect of things.. My phone is not rooted and I don't plan to, but will if necessary.
Any info at all would be appreciated to get me prepared while I wait for it to arrive at my house next week
Thanks!

hey, so i just got this recently aswell for my note 4. i cant see myself upgrading to a new phone anytime soon, loving the note 4, so i decided to get one. i had some of the same questions as you, so i found this which kind of helped. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDkj3SrQFXE
and from what im seeing, we have access to all the same apps from samsung and oculus.
my phone is rooted, and im figuring out how to use the google cardboard stuff with our gear vrs. need to disable some permissions and then turn them back on when not using google cardboard. not sure if you need root for that, maybe do. rooting gives u more options to play around and, knock on wood, ive never ran into any issues where i needed to unroot and send back to the manufacturer.
Is there a root solution for AT&T G900A Galaxy S5 on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow?
Thanks
No, there is not
once again.
If you are looking for root, then you probably have the wrong phone. This phone is 2 and a half years old. Most of the developers have moved on to the newer phones, and are unwilling to work on a older phone where the root method is likely going to be specific to this device only.
Has anyone tried https://github.com/timwr/CVE-2016-5195 ?

Per that article, the APK that they want users to try and report on is: https://vvdveen.com/drammer/drammer.apk

Its primarily the carrier that locks most things down especially the bootloader. Best bet is to save up and outright buy a "developers" version of a phone or the google pixel.
Take a look here:
http://tinyurl.com/j3rzy7g
It's now basically possible, just waiting for someone to make an executable/apk.
id donate $5-10 for root
Rumor has it the author of this code is not selling or accepting payments for it, and if he releases it, he's not going to charge for it either.
Rowhammer
Seems it is not working on my SM-G900A.
i am also waiting for root i still use this phone i got 3 of these and 3 note 3's old but good phones
Please help me, how can I root my LG G4? Version is ZVF. What I need to do to successfully root my device? Thanks

I came here with the same question as the OP. What is the deal with the LG G4 and rooting? I've had this phone for two years now and not once has there been a root option for it. I've never had this issue with any devices I have owned previously. And I'd hate to have to buy a new device just so I can finally have control over what I own. Especially since I just paid off this one. Sorry for my frustration nothing personal to you but I'd really like to know why we don't and never have had a root available.

Cant root mm without a unlocked bootloader because to root mm u have to modify the kernal which messes with the secure boot chain. And gives secure boot errors.
Anti roll back prevents u from downgrading to a rootable version. Making hard bricks. Its sad but true. U need a diffrent device to root.
I actually put my g4 up again. Its having some issue
Im sure a really good dev like chainfire or someone of that knowlege could root it but theyve all moved on to more worthy devices
The g4 died well becore its time.
Only reason i got root is mine never bootlooped. And at the rates its goin never will.
Ive atempted so many diffrent methods and ideas to root mm on emulated mm roms on pc. Nothing.
Ive atempted some many methods of downgrading and nothing but bricks. Never boots. Always boot errors. I wish i could update. Being stuck on lolipop with no hope for mm or nougat if i want root.
But again. It is most def better to get a root friendly phone
Had I know this was going to be the outcome I would have gone with something else maybe even waited longer to upgrade. I bought this one on the promise it was rootable with a matter of time. I won't do that again. I simply can't afford to spend $500+ every two years to make sure I have a rootable phone when it should have that control stock. Just hidden toggle for it so morons don't do stupid stuff.

i know its dumb i learned a valuble lesson in the g4 one dont buy the newest unless its confirmed rootable.
and 2 do my research and make sure what i want to purchase is rootable.
i know how u guys feel now my g4 is about dead i just like skulking around the threads still
i got mad and threw it. busted and bent almost in half.
well i put a old cracked lcd on it i dont have wifi any more thn 5 foot from my router.
my earpiece is dead. ir ports gone. rear camera also but it still makes and recieves calls and data
i got a zte max x 2 i think it is but im in the same boat crippled fastboot and bootloader
on mm with absolutly no root in sight no stock firmwares to fix it even if i brick it in testingroot methods

no this is one of those things id put my g4 on a shelf and get a rootable device i know easier said than done but will save u a lot of headache if u quit on it now
this thing prob wont be rooted anytime soon
ive tried everything i know and ofcoarse all in sdk simulation and all leads to hard bricks
it sucks i have mines still on zv6 rooted but the mother board is damaged and i have very little wifi signal and no mi crophone
ive tried to update a zv6 rom into thinking its zvb and higher but no luck anywhere
im def no developper but i really dont think the real devs even trying to do anything with this device which i cant blame them moved on to better devices
It sucks. I have been using my g4 for two years and am pretty happy and dont have plans to upgrade, since newer phones do not offer much as compared to g4. I was hoping that someone will eventually find a way to root it again, whats wrong with people, no one has time to make this happen?

Nothing to do with time It has been tried and tried again Its lg and sprints locked bootloaders and anti rollback to rollback to rootable versions
