i bought Fujitsu futro S700 and i can't find any best os for it
SPECS:
1GB FLASH
1,5gb ram
AMD G-T44R
i tried Tinycore (good but it's very empty os), debian (bugged on my terminal), antix (not booting), slax(can't install but good os for me), ReactOS(bluescreen on boot),windows POSREADY 2009(Doesn't detect any disk),DebianDOG( i don't remember what was wrong with it), browser linux(can't install and empty os), xenialpup (GRUB throwing error after trying boot), mini ubuntu server(doesn't detect wifi card), void linux(same issue that mini ubuntu server has)
How about Puppy Linux, Linux Lite or SliTaz Linux? Did you try those as well?
Xenialpup is puppy linux version, linux lite is more than 1gb, and im goind to try siltaz
SilTaz is very cool os, thanks

I'm an experienced computer user in Windows and (X)Ubuntu, but some things I don't know I search online... but this problem I get only gets me somewhat upset by "Search Overload" (See some United States commercials).
## My computer setup ##
OS: dual-boot Windows XP; Xubuntu 10.04 LTS
Boot Loader: grub
In the partitions:
- Windows XP
- Xubuntu 10.04 LTS
- swap
- factory OEM partition
I need to reinstall Windows completely. I can either...
1. get that ISO of "The Windows 9x Project" burnt (I have an XP upgrade version),
2. borrow my friends OEM disk (I DO have a legit XP CD but it is only an Upgrade version ), or
3. try to get that special partition to install EXACTLY the way I want it to (most likely impossible)
Also, I've been trying to reinstall the grub bootloader (which originaly comes with my Xubuntu disk) manually, but it has been unsuccessful so far.
This will also be able to help me in case a Windows program rewrites the MBR (or I need to do this task again).
What I don't want to do unless it is the only possible way:
- Reinstall Xubuntu 10.04 LTS (plus install all of those updates and change Firefox... again!!!)
==================================================
Current Status:
==================================================
Will try to use the Windows 9x Project .iso and use my legit XP upgrade CD+key
- will take a lot of time to accomplish, IF successful
- I hope that Windows ME will work with my system -_-'
"I'm an experienced computer user in Windows and (X)Ubuntu"
I lol'd a little.
I don't get what you're asking for. Advice on loading grub? Telling you that XP needs to die as an outdated OS? Ubuntu should be illegal under computer misuse legislation?
You state your current progress and methods to get where you're going, there is no "where now?"question to your post.
Have you considered virtualisation as an alternative to your lack of understanding dealing? This way you can still have the "I'm cool I run ubuntu", without having to try and understand it.
For the record, ubuntu is an abomination and should never have been made. Debian is good, don't mess with perfection.
If this reply succeeds in posting, lock this post due to inactivity (my 100G HDD is too small for dual-booting WinXP & Xubuntu, imo)
EDIT: I totally know Ubuntu sucks (one example: poorly made packages require only one type of sound interface -- read: pulseaudio)

Hello,
I am a Windows user and want to try Linux on my pc. It's possible to install Linux if i came from Windows ? If yes, then how ?
Of course it's possible, Linux is an awesome OS, I'm using Ubuntu it looks wonderful and works amazingly fast.
If you want to use ubuntu take a look at
http://www.ubuntu.com/
You can choose to use Linux as your only OS or dual boot with windows, if you have issues or if you don't know how to install it, you can try wubi
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer
if you have a USB stick use Unetbootin or something like that to install linux on the stick. Once you have it on a stick you can boot and run linux off the stick so that nothing ever happens to your HD.
Also, once you download linux (most if not all) distros allow you run the OS to check it out and see if the drivers are compatible etc. Have a look...there are Many distros, they all have their place.
Ya, i know Linux is a great OS. I heard that it's more appropriate OS for such things like Android hacking, developing because Android OS is based on Linux.
In terms of installation, i'd prefer method using a DVD disc. So, what version i need to download and burn to the disc ?
What sort of specification is the PC that you want to run Linux on? If it's a fairly modern PC then you might be better placed downloading a copy of VMware Player and a VM Image of a Linux distro (Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora) - that way you can just run it without affecting your PC at all or having to worry about USB booting, dual-booting etc.

My laptop spec's: 2-core x64 bit intel cpu, 2gb of ram, 256mb vga, 1366 x 768 resolution.
Actually i'd like to run with dual-boot... Windows 7+Linux. So, which is better - Mint, Ubuntu or Fedora ? Gonna use more for android development purposes, not for gaming. Any suggestions guys ?

Before you run dual-boot, download each of the distros and run them as a Live image - try them out for a while. Mint is an improvement (IMHO) on Ubuntu, but they are very much the same base. Fedora is totally different.
I personally use Linux Mint. I have found that it integrates very well with everything I tend to use my computer for. To get a good base of what you like, I would recommend trying out both Linux Mint and OpenSuse live disks before you install one.
In the meantime, check out Wubi .
What is Wubi?
Wubi is an officially supported installer for Windows users that allows Ubuntu to be installed and uninstalled in a safe, easy way as with any other Windows application.

Here is a list of the top 100 linux distros. It is also a news site and good general knowledge.
Out of the options above, if you want only to use it for android and nothing else, go for Mint, it will most likely 'work' the best. But later on as you learn linux you will want to change and try other distros.
You can also have different window managers on one distro...personally I love E17 but it is underdeveloped. Have a look at the website above.

Ok so I tried installing Ubuntu but some error happened (something about it not being able to save the bootloader or something like that) and it cancelled the installation. Now I boot into windows and when I go into Disk Management there's 37GB of free space that I can't do anything to. I can't delete it to expand C drive. So I've got 37 GB sitting around not doing anything. wtf do I do?
When I try to delete it gives me this error.

Windows cant read EXT2/3/4 partitions that are used in linux so as far as windows is concerened that part of the hard drive does not exist. as such the built in windows partition editor cant work with it
i use a live linux distro callled PartedMagic. it fits on a 1 gig USBstick all the instructions for creating that stick are on their site. from there you can resize your windows partition to reclaim that space. or you can reformat it to NTFS so that windows can see it as another drive. PartedMagic is also great for accessing your data should windows refuse to boot and accessing the OEM partition so you can reinstall windows if a virus screws it up.
If you resize a windows partition dont be alarmed if windows gose through its check disk routine on its first boot. Widows usually has a little freakout every time you resize its partition.
Of course it's possible!
But it depends on what you mean by install...?
Do you wish to virtualize it or actually install it to a physical partition?
Linux is an amazing OS, I've been thinking of switching to it full time, and just virtualizing windows on it. I recommend Linux Mint.

You can try GParted
freebsd compilation will go or not?
Use the WUBI installer. Some folks say it's a bit slower than running Ubuntu on a dedicated partition, but on your dual core pc, you'll never see a difference. Some say a WUBI install is less stable, but I've been using the same WUBI installation for over a year with not a single problem. It is true that it will only install up to 30 Gb but you can re-size your disk.img however big you want later if you decide you need more space, and you also have access to your Windows HDD space from within Ubuntu. Installation is super simple, and you won't have to mess with partitioning your HDD. I would go with Ubuntu 10.10 personally, because 11.XX uses the Unity gui and I think Unity sucks compared to Gnome2 which comes with 10.XX.

Kernel version is 3.0.8.
If you can install linux distros on the backend of rooted ARM devices it should make sense we could do the same....maybe
Ubuntu on a RAZR I ? Linux x86 apps + windows apps with wine without even recompile? I think this devece needs some love. It can be the next HTC HD2 for shure.
I dont understand the htc comparison
But i have your ideas about no need to recompile and wine in mind too...
But i understand adam because linux for android is compiled for arm achitecture so a usual desktop image would make more sense...
Why is the kernel version so low?!

What we need to do
I have a friend with this device, after rooting he reports there is no chroot command from terminal. If so we must:
Compile busybox (with more extensions) for x86 and install it alongside root (or after root)
Make a mountable image from an ubuntu clean install and mount it (probably also needs busybox)
chroot into this mounted image
run a vnc X server on a framebuffer
vnc from android
This is how it is done on other android devices, will attempt to compile and try these instructions out this weekend when I meet him but booting native ubuntu is a much better idea (even better if we can make it receive calls ).
And for what Windows on 4,3 inches display? It dont have hdmi.

Go look up the HTC HD2. It can run Windows Phone 7 and Android dual-booted (with Linux from SDCard), and was originally the last, albeit most powerful, Windows Mobile 6 phone ever made.
Even though it is four years old, there is a massive and vibrant dev community behind it, making it reach the front page of XDA forums.
However, even the venerable HD2 is getting old, with 1GHz processor and half a gig of RAM that was top-of-the-line years ago, and people have looked in vain for some kind of successor. Hopefully, the Razr I, with an unlockable bootloader and Intel processor, will be the one. But that remains for us to do.

So I tried this out and there is a chroot-compatible busybox after rooting ("busybox chroot" needs to be called as opposed to "chroot" as there is no properly made link), so anyone with this phone can try (using a PC) install Ubuntu without the grub bootloader using manual partitioning on a single ext3 (I am not sure if ICS supports ext4) partition on a microsd, put into your phone, use a root terminal, mount it, mount the adequate dev, dev/pts, proc and sys partitions and chroot right in. You then might want to install a VNC server in Ubuntu to be able to create a VNC X session in a framebuffer and a VNC client on the android side to VNC into localhost (127.0.0.1), but that should work, I didn't have time to try it this weekend If someone gets stuck post and let us see what happens I cannot wait to see if wine can run desktop Spotify with sound, excited a little hehe.
EDIT: So to make this more understandable you must:
Install Ubuntu (using your computer) to a MicroSD, specifying partitions manually and choosing only a single ext3. Right before clicking install there is a button with something along the lines of "Advanced options", disable the install the bootloader (grub) option.
Insert the MicroSD into the phone and open a root terminal
I don't use Android, maybe it automounts in /media/sdcard or /sdcard, if not you will have to find the device and partition name (probably /dev/mmcblk0p1 or /dev/sdb1) and issue "mount /dev/DEVICEPARTITION /media/sdcard"
mount -t proc proc /media/sdcard/proc
mount -o bind /dev/ /media/sdcard/dev/
mount -t devpts devpts /media/sdcard/dev/pts
busybox chroot /media/sdcard /bin/bash
Now a shell from Ubuntu should open. apt-get update && apt-get install vncserver (maybe the DNS settings must be set in /etc/resolv.conf, not yet sure)
vncserver (or start vncserver, something along those lines)
Now from Android install a VNC viewer and vnc into 127.0.0.1 (or localhost)
That should do it, again if you get stuck post here
i had htc hd2, the most amazing phone in the world. I wanna buy the rarz i for the x86 processor in it. But cpu power without community and developers is nothing :|
Sorry for my bad english.
Yesterday we tried something:
We used dd to put an arch linux image on a micro sd card...
Though my laptop wasnt even able to boot from any sd card, this should work on our phone...
but how to make it boot from the sd card? xD
btw you might have noticed, this will make only linux boot, not android, we dont chroot, may somebody build a simple ubuntu img for complete linux installer?
//Robert
so right now i am trying to chroot into an img file, mounting it and then chrooting it but all i get is:
chroot: can't execute '/system/bin/sh': No such file or directory
whats wrong?

Hey,
great work. :good:
Good to see there are people with the same ideas. I´ve searched a lot for this thread.
I will also try to get this device for the same reasons when it´s cheaper. Has anybody tried to get Plasma Active or Tizen to run?
I think Active should now be possible through kubuntu Active?
Cheers!
Hi all
At first you can try a application from play store called Linux installer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid
Otherwise you can wait some weeks for an nexus 7 Ubuntu port witch looks really interesting.

thanks for your post on preparing an arch image (I don't have permision to post in devel forum, maybe because I'm a newbie ), It worked well for me although I had to adjust some things such as path and pts mount
I now have a gcc toolchain and a latex distrib on my phone I had never used arch, found it very good
I've also tried some window managers ... the one I find best for the moment is enlightenment in the touchscreen mode, awesome works great as well.
I would also suggest to use Hacker's keyboard instead of stock android, it is a complete keyboard, very usefull when dealing with terminals ... as for VNC viewer, one should recompile android-vnc-viewer with the patches given in Issues 238 and 239 (can't post links either), it's a lot better
I've had a lot of fun, thanks
First, Complete Linux Installer doesnt work because its images are compiled for arm not x86 (i tried )
Secondly, I did a tutorial here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1966984
the nexus 7 stuff is interesting and we consider making flashable fastboot for the razr i since we dont have cwm or such you know
i am talking to jordan keyes who recently owned a nexus 7 who probably will try out the ubu stuff and i might get some system info
but i would really prefer a dual boot, capable of booting from sd...

So if I have this right, you are SSHing into a linux pc via terminal and VNCing into a linux pc via an app. All fine and good. That shouldn't have any bearing on the linux pc itself if your logging into the linux pc exactly the same as before.
More likely I think your logging in differently in some way, upgraded the linux distro (which changed something), changed something on the linux pc yourself or haven't changed something that needs to change, forgot to switch to root user, or some other thing on the linux pc.
ssh, vnc, rdp, or whatever are basically just a way of bringing the computer to you. What happens there is happening on the computer not the android device.

I am actually trying to run a arm linux system from terminal and VNC into it on the same device (Nook HD). I used 2 apps one is called Linux on Android and the other is called Linux Deploy. This worked on all of the stock roms but non of the CyanogenMod ROMS. Not sure if this is a conflict with the CyanogenMod build or whats up with it.
What linux version could I install on my Mi8?
What method would be advisable?
In the past some people has installed Linux on their smartphones, but only some devices are compatible.
I would like to try Linux on my Mi8, it's powerful enough and that would let me use many advanced programs for science not available for Android.
Just use Linux Deploy(u need root rights). You can choose you district and install it. To access you would setup ssh in the settings. Then download a ssh client and connected to local host. All done

But I don't want to run linux virtualized on top of Android, I want to replace it completly.
There is also Ubuntu Touch.
Which one works better?
Well as Linux shares the kernel with android you have no performance lost when using Linux Deploy. Replacing the OS will not be possible.
(You can also try the integrated Framebuffer display...then you would have a linux desktop. Hook up a keyboard and a mouse and youre good to go)

In fact it doesn't replace the whole kernel, just a small part of it. And most things on Android are run on a Java Virtual Machine.
