Hi Guys,
Could someone tell me why my 2 weeks old Galaxy S (Service Provider: Bell) turns it self off out of the blue?
It happend twice already, the phone was on my pocket, I pushed the on/off side botton and nothing happens, the screen is pitch black!!
This is an irritating issue as I'm forced to physically take out the phone from the case and remove the battery and put it back on to turn on the phone.
Does anybody whats causing this issue? and how to fix it ?
Your help is much appreciated!
Cheers
Also, I was wondering if I do a factory reset to try solving the random shutting down problem, will I have to re-purchase all the apps I bought from the Market?
Send for warranty is needed I think

No, the info that you purchased the apps is stored in your Google account. So if you use the same Google account as you're using now as your primary account after reset, you can download all those apps for free. (Primary account is the Google account you first associated with the device.)
i had the same problem with 3 different bell vibrants. About 6 days ago, i bought a new sim card from bell for $5, and it has not happened since. I bought my phone from Bestbuy, but bought my new sim card from Bell store because perhaps the bestbuy sim cards are outdated. Hopefully it stays ok.
One thing i did notice was that when my phone would turn off by itself, it was always in an area where there was bad reception. Maybe a link.
I found that it happened when I installed a different launcher other than Touchwiz. I was using LauncherPro, uninstalled it and everything worked fine. I installed ADW and everything is fine so far.
I saw this thread yesterday and was thankful mine hadn't developed this issue. And then last night after about two hours idle time, my SGS switched itself off and the power button wouldn't respond at all. The only way to revive my beloved phone was to do a hard reset (i.e. removing the battery).
For what it's worth, the only "mods" I've made are installing a handful of apps. No new launcher, no custom ROMs etc.
I'm tempted to give Voda a ring and ask for a new SIM. But this really smells more like a hardware fault to me. A faulty SIM shouldn't result in a handset switching itself off, I'd think...
i'v encountered smailar problem , first i thought my phone turned itself off, later i suspected some apps i'v installed ( setCPU, autokiller etc), after while and digging, i found that i'v installed "Android Tweak" , it has an option to disable screen dim, and i'v used that option, so i changed it back and the problem is gone.
in Spain we have the same problem and no solution by now

Mine just died again ten minutes ago. I guess it's a possibility, but considering the number of bugs that we're all discovering with the hardware and software, I'm suspecting it's yet another dodgy batch of phones from Samsung.
I just bought two Galaxy S and I am having same problems with both. I called Belll and they said they never had this kind of problem before. I had installed few apps and thought may be those apps were causing the problem, but even after deleting the apps..phones are powering off itself...
Did any one find the solution yet??
Same problem here, and from what i am hearing is becoming frecuent among galaxy owners. Im amazed something this important hasnt made the news , i mean, its a huge malfunction issue .
I had the same issue.
I called up Samsung support and they asked me to do a phone reset. I didn't try that, but I upgraded the firmware and it's gone now. I suspect resetting the phone will also solve the issue.
This happened to me for the first time today as I woke up and it wasn't dark outside. When I looked to see what time it was my phone (that I use as an alarm) was off!!
This is the first blemish on an otherwise outstanding experience. But it is a major one. I will assume that it is somehow related to something I've installed. But I'm not looking forward to figuring it out, since I've got a lot of apps

Good luck. I did a factory restore the other day to see if that would help. It didn't. Like you I use my SGS as an alarm... I woke up two hours late this morning because my phone had switched itself off in the middle of the night.
I'm currently waiting for a replacement handset. I'm not holding my breath that the new hardware won't have exactly the same bug though...
Mine started doing this yesterday...same with a bunch of coworkers that have the same phone. We think it may be related to bad reception.
Sigh
My phone just started doing this in the last couple of days.
I've also noticed sometimes it gets into a state of continuously saying "usb debugging connected" and then "usb connected" and just continuously keeps displaying those even though it has no usb cable anywhere near it..
Havent flashed the phone for about a week now and it was fine for 3-4 days after the flash so no idea what is going on..
Anyone else seen those usb messages? They come and go.. but it seems when they come its usually when my phone turns off..

I've not seen anything like that myself but then I have stuck with stock firmware.

Thats funny...because the only time it has happened to me is at work, where the phone is struggling for reception. It has turned off a total of about 8 times over 1 month. It has never turned off anywhere else (except one other time i was getting bad reception in the forest, and a few minutes later it was off)...strange
looking for a little help guys, not sure what has happened but i have just literally (in the last 30 minutes) installed rom manager, on running the software for the first time i got the run at your own risk message that comes up the first time and then it went to the menu...... and then the phone shut down and now wont turn on, doesnt register when i plug it in to the laptop or even when the charger is plugged in. please guys need some suggestions here as to how to make this brick work again!!!
many thanks
having tried several different ways to resolve this (pressing and holding home, vol down and pwr whilest inserting the battery being one of them), ive come to the conclusion that there is no coming back from whatever rom manager has done to my phone. thankfully the phone is still within warranty as its less than 3 months old so heres hoping that they will fix the damn thing!!!
Rom manager is a tricky app because it is known for bricking phones often.
Seems like your phone is dead.
Most user with similar prob like you had to bring the phone to the service.

As you are on warranty bring it there and wait till it is repaired.
Good luck.
Next time better do not work with rom manager.
thanks, yeah its weird cause when i had it on my x10 mini pro i had no issues - but clearly not the case here, oh well live n learn!!!
just as a sort of fyi i took the phone to my local t-mobile store here in liverpool and the guy behind the counter couldnt have been more helpfull, took the phone and arranged for it to be sent back to samsung for repair, even tried himself to make it work but to no avail. was most impressed with his 'can do' attitude and its not often that something like that happens!!!
Hello all,
Firstly, I hope this is the right place to put this thread. I did a search and did not find anyone else having this issue so I decided to put my post here. I am having a problem with my note 4 randomly restarting a few times every hour. It goes through its shutdown procedure and turns right back on. Occasionally it will shutdown and stay off. It seems to be software related, but I'm no expert on these things. I did however download 'Device Temperature' from the play store to check to see if it might be overheating. As far as I can tell it has stayed a cool 24-25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit) the entire time.
It does this at unpredictable times, whether or not the phone is in my pocket, in my hands, or laying flat on a desk with or without the charger plugged in.
I don't think I can take it back to Tmobile to have it replaced as I bought it from a friend a few weeks ago to use on cricket. This just started 2 days ago.
The device is SIM unlocked, but not rooted with stock everything. It's still in mint condition and to my knowledge has never been dropped.
Can anyone help?
More Information
I did a Google search for "Galaxy Note 4 Random Reboot" and I found some information saying to reformat my SD card or try doing a factory reset on the phone.
I tried both (I actually removed the SD card completely instead of just reformating it), and about a half hour later... boom restart again. FML.
Once again I turn to the wonderful folks at XDA for help. Thanks to all in advance.
Sounds like it could be bad eMMC flash memory. Go with your friend and have Tmobile replace it. Also get Square Trade insurance if you can.
Got it fixed
I called Samsung about the issue and after some brief troubleshooting they recommended having it reflashed at a samsung experience center. The closest one to me was in a Best Buy. I dropped it off, after explaining what was happening, and an hour later it was ready to be picked working good as new. I haven't noticed it restart even once since.
Samsung offered to replace the entire unit but it would cost me $28 for 2 day shipping (assuming that they had my model in stock). I will go that route if the issue returns. I'm hoping not to go this route because I already paid for this phone to be unlocked once - I'd rather not pay again if I don't have to.
I'll keep you guys updated if the rebooting issue returns again.
Also check to make sure the battery is properly seated and contacts are not bent/damaged.

This. I kept having this issue with my Note 3 and could not figure it out. Eventually I just took out the battery, cleaned the contacts, put it back in, and it never had a random reboot after that.
Are you guys running any custom roms, or is it still stock?
I was unfortunate enough to get one of the first batch of preorder Nexus 6's on AT&T with the random reboot issue. Has anyone found a solution for this yet? Flashing the stock factory image from Google does not work. Exchanging is not an option as of now because no AT&T store in my area has any in stock. Any help would be appreciated.
Mine was rebooting at least once a day. I noticed that it happened a couple times as I was lifting the phone, when ambient display would normally turn on, so I turned ambient display off. It's been almost two days now with no restarts. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.
Noticed my Motorola.com unit doing this over the past few days. Really strange, but haven't found a solution to it either.

I am having the exact same issue and i purchased from Motorola.com as well. Check my phone and the screen is blank and i have to power off my phone to get it to come back to life. Not sure what the issue is but it is frustrating.
Haven't had a reboot at all, using T-Mobile N6.
Upload a last_kmsg after your "random reboot" in /proc/
OP,
Are you saying you flashed the factory image and it didn't fix the issue or you were unable to flash the factory image successfully?

I am not sure if the WIFI has anything to do with it but i will keep track of when my phone reboots. Most of the time it was in my pocket and i went to check it and the screen was off and had to hold down the power button to turn it off and back on. If it happens again in going to try to call/text myself or use android device manager to see if it actually is ON but the screen is blank or if it is actually turned off completely.
Is this issue present also in the playstore's devices?
Just got home from my second trip to the AT&T store today. They told me they wanted me to return the phone and that they have no ETA on when they will be receiving the fixed batch. If I wait until after the 14 day return period the phone they will exchange me for will be refurbished.
My options are:
1. Keep the phone
2. Return the phone and go back to my old one
3. Exchange it when they have the "fixed" batch for a refurb
Great...

I just noticed yesterday by phone rebooted after leaving work and driving home. It was off wifi the whole time and when i got home the screen was blank. Couldn't turn it on without holding down the power button. I have a form in the Motorola forms about the same issue. I'll post if i get a resolve.
Shoot. Got a fully paid for AT&T Nexus 6 delivered last Friday (tried every Wed on Play Store and gave up). The ringtones, startup sound and subtle branding dont really bother me. The tether restrictions dont affect me on a shared data plan. But, it's randomly rebooted two consecutive nights while sitting next to me on couch. I suspect ambient display because it was right at time for medicine reminder app notification. Unacceptable. I guess if it continues I'll take it back after Thanksgiving and use Nexus 5 until AT&T can get some stock to replace it. Assuming it's an AT&T only hardware problem, which doesnt actually seem likely. Otherwise, maybe AT&T / Motorola can push Google to do a software fix.
I have this problem too. I have an unrooted ATT nexus 6. Last night i did a factory reset and turned off ambient display. I have a feeling ambient display may be to blame for these random reboots but who knows
Mine plays the ATT jingle when it freezes up. The screen goes black and have to hold the power button down to get it back up. Happened once at work (no wifi) and once at home (on wifi).
I hope they push an update soon.
Don't hold your breath for the update. If flashing a stock image doesn't fix it the problem is probably deeper than that. You have 14 days from the day you received it to get a new replacement.

In my experience, yes. I purchased a 32gb Blue model from the play store, running it with a brand new AT&T sim and in the week I've had it its randomly rebooted three times that I've noticed. Hopefully its an issue with a single batch, I'm RMAing this device for other reasons (uneven display color) and hopefully the new one won't have these issues.
Ok, so here is to explain what happened, so you can have a clue what am I talking about.
I bought Galaxy A71 a month ago (give or take), so out of the box it had Android 10. The phone was working flawlessly. Battery life awesome, pictures from camera great, etc. So, few days ago on March 26, 2021, an update to Android 11 came in. I am a tech nerd, I know about phones, rooting, flashing, etc.
So, I saw that I have around 78-80% of the battery so it was enough to download and install Android 11.
Downloading and installing and optimizing apps after went smooth as silk. I usually soft restarting my device after any software update, so I did that after the installation of Android 11 was entirely finished.
But, this is what happen when I restart my phone the normal way. I press and hold the power button, the dialog of Power off, Reset and Airplane mode came out, tapped twice the reset button and phone went restarting and just.... died. I remember that when I soft restarted my phone, the battery was on 72%. So I tried any trick in the books to turn on my phone again like combinations of pressing buttons, then with USB cable, charger, etc, but nothing was responsive. It's like the phone was clinically dead.
My phone is still under warranty and I will probably end up taking it to the T-mobile store, but the point of this thread is to inform others of the situation like mine and see if someone else had the same problem?
Maybe someone will post a solution what to do in situations like this?
If I find any solution, I will update this post with all the details.

Yes i did, nothing shows in Device Manager. As I said, I tried every possible trick to wake the phone up, but it was unsuccessful.
I end up taking it to the carrier store cuz it is still under warranty. They told me if they can't fix it, they'll probably give me a new one or to wait for Galaxy A72 To arrive in 2 weeks. We'll see what happens.

They fix it, it said it was software problem, got stuck on rebooting. I get it today (2 weeks later) and it worked. They managed to turn it on but without a factory reset, every app was there, every picture, video, contacts, call history, etc. I don't know how they did it, but they did. So when I got my phone back I tried to restart it normal way, long press of the power button, then tap Restart and again restart. The phone restart it without a problem. I was happy. Then later that day (2 hours ago when I'm writing this, I notice that always on display when i touch the phone screen will show up but doesn't switch off after 10 seconds (I set it up like that), instead it started to blink in intervals like i was touching the screen continuously. Then I did a deep soft reset. You know, when you press Volume down and Power button at the same time and.... got the same problem again. Phone is non functional, none combination of pressing buttons worked, just like i describe it in the OP. Just for information, I did the same on my previous phone Galaxy A7 2018 and never had this problem. I did it on this phone too, never had a problem. Then I remember it that on both phones when i do that and not having problems were running on Android 10. this phone now update it to Android 11 and that buttons combination is probably bricking the phone. It's just a thing I notice. So I am planning to call the official service that fixed the phone how did they do it, so maybe I can do it myself too. I don't want to wait for another 2 and a half weeks.
I am facing the same issue. And I think my warranty is out. Did you get to ask them how can you turn it on yourself!!
I would really appreciate some help here!
