Charging Connected Device Via USB ALWAYS ON - Google Pixel 4a 5G Questions & Answers

Currently on a bootloader unlocked and rooted (Magisk Canary) Pixel 4a5G on Xfinity. Phone was bought at Xfinity (Verizon VMNO) and unlocked by them. I believe it is technically a Verizon phone but it is unlocked.
Phone worked flawlessly until recently. I tried to update to the latest July build removed Magisk, removed -w from the flashall, bat file, The update failed and the phone would not boot. Rebooting my computer and changing the USB port allowed my to do the update again and it took. Phone worked fine and the only thing I noticed is when opening an app the app image would flash on the screen before the app opened, it never did that before. About a week after the update on a drive to the beach I plugged the phone in the USB port of my car as did not realize it was not charging until later in the day when it was at 13% charge. Thinking nothing of it or a faulty cable, i charged it with the stock google charger when I arrived at my destination. It charged without issue for the next 2 days but on the 3rd day I plugged it in to charge only to later discover it was not charging. I rebooted the phone and it started to charge. That night the same thing happened, it would not charge, that is when I saw the Charging Connected Device Via USB notification. When you press "tap for more options" the USB controlled by CONNECTED DEVICE is highlighted. Only if you highlight THIS DEVICE will the phone charge. I cleaned the USB port, rebooted into safe mode, did everything except a hard reset and can not get this to go away. It is there after a reboot,, I have a new Pixel 6 I started to configure and when prompted to connect to old device to copy files the Pixel 4a5G would not cooperate and would fail trying to switch to "this device" as stated earlier. I have no idea what to do, I 'm hoping a hard reset will work but cannot do one as I am away from home and if it fails I will be without a phone.
All help will be greatly appreciated, Thank You all in advance!

Did a factory reset - Nothing.
Installed the factory ROM again (clean install) - Nothing
Downgraded ROM (clean install) - Nothing
Called Google phone is out of warranty, they said to take it to UBreakIFix which is an authorized repair store.

Same exact problem with a Samsung Galaxy Note9.
Did you ever find a solution?
I can charge wirelessly and I can charge with the phone "Powere3d Down" or "OFF" ... but can't charge via USB cable while Powered On and can't shake the "Charging Connected Device" status and can't change Control of USB to "This Phone" from PHANTOM "Connected Device"
Please send any working solution to [email protected]

By George ... I think I've got it ...
Android System - Charging connected device via USB - Tap for other USB options
Once this Notification makes itself known, I was unable to charge my phone (Galaxy Note9) except in certain special scenarios;
- The Phone was turned off
- The Phone was turned on ... connected to a charger - then I tapped the Notification and chose "This Phone" to control the USB/Charge Port
The reason the problem started was because I connected the phone to a Rental Car using Android Auto ... that connection changed the USB Control Defaults to do things like "Auto Start AndroidAuto" ... Auto Play Music via Android Auto ... The phone now expected to see Android Auto "ALL The Time".
Reconnect your charge Cable - Click on the Notification - Choose "This Phone" to control the USB/Charge Port ... it should start charging again.
Reconnect the Phone to the offending External Device (Game Cntroller, Storage Device, AndroidAuto, etc) and change the "Automatic or Default Settings" for that device so that The Phone's USB/Charge Port isn't controlled by that external device.
I hope this works for you as well as it worked for me ... Good Luck

Xperia Z dead(Reverse Polarity)

So i accidently plugged in the usb the wrong way and the phone shut off. Have tried every button combination and holding down the powerbutton numerous times with no success. Led light doesn't light up and have tried leaving it in the charger for various hours and used different chargers. My next step was to disassemble the phone and hope a battery pull did the trick but that didn't work. However when I disconnect the black battery connector and plug in a usb the red led lights up for about 15 seconds and dissapears.
anyone know any possible solutions? I think my battery might have fried

Is there a way to jump the battery and hope that that works? I've jumped plenty of batteries on phones with removable batteries but I'm not sure if the Z has metal contacts for negative and positve
no one?
normally any device that has DC input (like usb) is secured with diodes so that even when a faulty charger is connected it doesn't fry. But that's my electrical knowledge speaking. Please reply when you found out what the problem is

Alright thx for the info but maybe you had another problem with you charger and the transformation from 12V to 5V was bad, that can't be controlled with only a diode. Or maybe your One X hadn't any security internally because the manufacturer wanted to save money on that component / no place anymore to put it in the phone.
Think I have something similar..... Connected to car charger, led didn't go red, pushed charger in moved wire in phone charger goes off, phone won't start tried all button combos.
Sad bit is I only just got phone 3 days ago:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Can anyone else comment on this? I recently did this and my Xperia Z will not turn on. Would replacing the battery work or is the damage related to the other internals?
Do you see any damage to the usb port?

No I don't see any damage to the USB port.
I did the same to my xperia Z1 (reverse biased it using usb and 5 volts wires) The battery however had charge so as soon as I connected the phone restarted and could not charge any more. Any solution please ????
Might be an old post but I had the same problem. I was fixing a cable (18V) and I wanted the range the cable in the corner. I was so lazy to use a screw driver or something else. So I used what I have in my hand: The jack cable, plugged into my phone. So I used the bare part of the cable (Don't ask me why, I don't know). I don't remember if my phone restarted, but he was fine. But not my jack connector. When I plug an earphone it says that my earphones are not recognized. So I change it (by my self) But still the same problem...
Seems like the problem comes from somewhere else.
do you found the fried parts of your phone or fixed it ?
i have same issue today i connected an experimental cable (v+ was placed into gnd pin and gnd to v+) to my lumia 625 and it flashes then shut off immediately now it show no sign of life not charging not turning on
anyone knows what parts have been fried ?

Need help with unresponsive USB port

My Z3C's USB port has become unresponsive, it wont charge the phone nor connect to a computer.
The phone itself works as it should, apart from the USB.
It does sense that it is plugged into a charger when in an off state and boots into the battery charging screen however no charging takes place and there's no animation of the battery icon or change in the percentage. The magnetic charging port does work though.
I can't get my computer to recognise the phone in either standard mode, fastboot or flash. However when connected by USB I can get the phone into fastboot (steady blue) or flash mode (red/green flash), it's just my computer doesn't pick up anything.
I've tried several cables, chargers and computers so all that can be ruled out.
I've verified the continuity between the end of the USB port (that connects to the computer/charger) to the pins soldered to the main board of the phone. Everything seems fine. I reflowed the solder of the USB connector just to be sure.
I'm at a loss, anyone got any ideas?

if phone has warranty use it, i had this problem in some phones sometimes mic fails as well and I had to change usb flex for galaxy s2 and 3. Sometimes is for humidity on usb flex.
I've just been inspecting the mainboard closely near the usb port and I think there's a component missing. No idea how it has become detached.
The phone is an ebay salvage project, but I'm sure when I received it I could charge it fine through the USB port although it wasn't soon after that it started having problems. Now I'm doubting myself that it ever charged in the first place.
Anyway I'm now looking for a high res photo of the Z3C mainboard (battery side). I've got a dead Z1C with the same components near the USB port but as the components are arranged in a different orientation I'm unsure of which way round to solder it to the Z3C.

usb issue and root without odin?

Hello, I currently have a note 4 marshmallow 6.0.1 but a few weeks ago before marshmallow got released the phone started charging really slow, it takes about 8 hours to fully charge, tried 3 different batteries, tried 3 different chargers and the issue persist. I tried to connect it to my computer to root it but it shows as unrecognized device, same goes for download mode (tried other computers too with the same result)
I thought it was the usb port so I ordered through ebay and replaced the usb board, it's still doing the same thing, takes about 8 hours to charge, is the fast charge capacitor/chip/controller on the daughter board or is it on the main board?
does anyone know if there is any other way to root the phone without odin as it's showing unrecognized on my pc?
Samsung devices are notorious for charging ports going bad.
Your charging port probably needs replaced fella. And as far as I know Odin is the only way to install TWRP since Towelroot has been patched back in the day.
@renickdp I have a note 4 as well.
I flashed Marshmallow and then a Note 5 port. Now I am having the same issues as you.
Extreme slow charging
(I use the app Ampere)
It's charging at a rate of 220mA
When normally it'll charge at 1020mA or 1700mA
It says I'm connected as a USB Charger, not AC (Which is wall)
Like you, I've tried 3 different power bricks, 4 different cables and 3 different batteries.
The thing that I find ultra werid is that this happened after flashing Marshmallow. I don't think it happened immediately for me but I honestly can't remember.
I am buying a new MicroUSB port and if it works after replacing it I'll tell you if not then this bug obviously has something to do with Marshmallow.
It happened for me about 2-3 days before marshmallow, already replaced the usb board and still the same issue, I'm starting to think is a device issue with the main board because even in download mode the computer shows unrecognized device
does anyone know if the power gets controlled by the usb board or the main board? I was looking at this picture and I was thinking the power management chip is what controls the fast charging and usb device identifier?

Edit: Tested with the ampere app, started at 620mA then a few seconds later started dropping down to 200mA

I don't know. But I have the same issue. I haven't yet replaced my usb board/port but Oh. I'm getting 250mA and below. At the max I'll get 350mA. What model do you have? What ROM / Firmware? (when the issue started)

I'm on stock it happened like 3 days before the OTA 6.0.1 that tmobile released, I updated OTA issue persists, model is the release one, not the newer T3
just received another usb board, will post back as soon I install it
I replaced the USB Port. Now the LCD screen is Broken! (I accidentally dropped it)
Soo.. I don't know if it works or not I'm going to end up getting a new phone most likely.
(I can't boot it into download mode. Not as of rn at least I haven't tried all that much but yea)
@renickdp
I'm sorry I couldn't be more help. It is an absolute pain rn.
I replaced the usb board again, same issue, on device manager on my pc I get a unable to get device descriptor, so I guess what controls the device usb must be defective on the main board
I will probably replace it but I need to do a backup I know I can backup the apk using different apps but, does anyone know any backup method that does not require root or a usb port and backups the app data?

Were you able to fix the issue?
I have the same issue with my Note 5. USB won't work for anything (Gear VR. OTG, Fast Charge) except slow charge. I changed the charging port and same issue. Can figure out what the issue is. Cant even flash firmware thru Odin as USB is not recognized.
used a brand new fast charge cable today that went hot and killed my USB going to check the cable for x'd cables latter on
( not happy )
swapped logic board to another frame to rule out daughter-board , so it must be a chip on the logic board I need to swap over , thankfully donor board around
no longer Trust these cables

"Moisture in charging port" and Samsung PMC (Power Management Chip)

I've been getting this "Moisture in charging port" message recently and after Googling the symptoms I was very discouraged because "fixes" did not seem to work. Phone would only charge wirelessly and my nexJack Dex would only work when the USB C was plugged in one orientation only, if at all.. Eventually I paid ubreakifix to replace the USB C charging port and the problem has gone away.
Why am I posting this you ask? Seems very straight-forward. However the ubreakifix tech said he found evidence of a PMC failure and some "electricity was leaking" and causing the battery to age faster and will cause other failure modes to the phone such as I was experiencing. I was/am skeptical because the only method he used was to plug some "special" equipment into the USB C port. He was confident that he didn't need to recheck after the port replacement.
Has anyone else encountered a PMC problem with their Note 8? There is actually a YouTube video of a PMC Note 8 replacement---not for the faint of heart.
Hi, test to clean data and cache on USB Setting (system application) and reboot.... It's OK for me now.

Actually I did this without any good result. Replaced the charging port and all is well for my case. Your case, of course, could be different.
Could be that the port is faulty...

Same happened to me few times, especially after going to swim and put my phone in my wet pockets, the solution was to plug the original charger (even with the message of moisture) and reboot. After the reboot the phone was able to charge via USB again, although I charge it wiresly most of the times.
I don't know but several persons helped that method, maybe just a software error.
I have the suspicion they're reading data from the phone, not directly from the hardware; and if that data is the result of a software issue (I'll get to that below), their voltage leak is a faulty assumption. My experience:
Same problem here. I tried a ton of fixes: new cables, new chargers, safe mode boot, USBDevice data wipe, Dalvik Cache wipe, full reset, etc. but none of them worked for me. Closest I got was holding down Bixby button on boot and then plugging in cable-- which would let me charge normally UNTIL I unplugged the first time; would always get moisture detected after that until next reboot....
Was ready to replace hardware at ubreakifix....
UNTIL I found this solution in a single obscure Youtube comment:
1. Reboot
2. Plug in cable on first logo
3. Unplug when 1st logo goes away
4. Quickly plug in again on 2nd logo.
It worked like a charm for me. Now I have no issues.
This confirms to me that there was some odd software flag that was tripped. My guess is that there's a baseline voltage the phone measures for charging, and when the voltage is under that baseline, it throws a moisture error. I bet this sequence causes the phone to measure a new baseline, thus resetting the bad data that tripped the moisture flag previously.
Just a guess, but would make sense.

Xiaomi Mi A2 charging issue

I have a mi a2 and it has some problem with charging. Whenever i connect it to a charger, it charges for a second, then stops and then starts again. Because of this, i cannot charge my phone when its on. To charge it, i have to turn it OFF and then it charges VERY slowly and gets to about 80% overnight after 8-9 hrs.
I have tried charging it with different cables so its def. a phone issue.
I know its not a software issue because my phone just got the android 10 update and its still not charging.
After reading some forums, i figured out i should replace the USB port as its the most fragile part. So i bought a usb flex port from ebay and replaced the original port, but then the phone stopped charging completely.
It still kept doing the stupid charging-not charging cycle, but when powered off, it couldnt charge.
Im not sure now if I should buy battery from ebay or not because i think i got ripped with the usb port.
BTW i live in Denmark and i have imported an Indian model and there are absolutely no shops here that repair Xiaomi phones.
What should i do? Suggestions?
Edit: im not sure if this is related or not, but i started getting the problem after i tried charging the phone with a pixel fast charger
This is definitely the hardware problem.
Either your cable , voltage or power related circuits.
However, I don't think it's battery problem.
Consider your situation, I think find a electrician, or electrical engineer (who can deal with electrical board) is highly recommend.
Sent from my Mi A2 using Tapatalk
In my MI A2 device, I've been using custom rom and whenever i plugged in my device there is no charging when phone is on so I've to switch off the phone to charge it and when i connect it to laptop it is not showing as well. I've done everything in my knowledge to remove this problem and atlast I've to roll back to stock firmware of device running on Android 10 but that problem is not gone completely. In status bar there is a permanent pop up of ''Charging connected device via USB" and when i plugged my device I've to switch it to 'This Device' from 'Controlled Device' in USB Preferences. It is not charging normally when i plugged in.
please share any answer regarding that I've done everything but can't fix it.
