I wanted to ask if there is any new information regarding a global rom or a custom rom? I would definitely be flashing it right away.
Best hope for that will be when the S version is released. According to available information it is virtually identical to the X, so the firmware might be transferable.
can't wait!
Hopefully.
I’m not sure how things will go. I would much prefer working with aosp to get a booting gsi rom personally
TBH I've got the X working so well now that I don't really see a huge need for a new ROM. If someone gets it working and shows a benefit then...
Yes, of course it works and doesn't cause any problems, but I would like only the voice assistants from Google
and android auto, all the rest is ok
Android auto is dead in the game bro'
Are there any new advances?
i suppose nothing, there is trouble with Vivo and unsecure Boootloader. Nobody seems interested by solid and friendly solution to unlock then after port a rom on this baby !

that's a shame. I would really appreciate a custom rom or at least a European supported rom
A multilingual ROM (like Global) who can be really adapted to our market can be nice. Anyway X Fold S is just a small update and not a global phone market.

You can extract boot.img in two ways:
1. What you described
2. Use DSU Loader and pull the file out using the following commands in adb:
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/by-name/boot of=/data/local/tmp/boot.img
chown shell.shell /data/local/tmp/boot.img
(After the end of adb shell)adb pull /data/local/tmp/boot.img

I haven't removed any Chinese bloatware, since I didn't find it was slowing down the phone or using too much memory. Quite happy to have it just sit there instead of risking removing too much.

What is involved in taking a ROM, and making it into a systemless ROM module?
Can they be of a different Android version than the main ROM?
As far as I learned the Magisk ROM has to be compatible to your stock firmware and ROM.
And I can tell that they are possible. On the HTC 10, Team Venom build the fist Magisk ROM. They are now followed by LeeDrOiD and BadBoyz ROMs which are getting available as Magisk Module ROM, as well as as full ROM.
I can't tell you how they did it, as I'm not a developer, but you could ask in their ROM threads. Maybe they'll tell you.

Yes and it'll always be, as Magisk adds/alters mount points on boot up, but otherwise uses the existing system and system files as well as data partition. Thus the ROM and Magisk Module got to be highly compatible. It's quite logical.

Well, we'll see what pleasures this will bring. Would be nice to implement MultiROM via Magisk. Question is if it'll help. The new - Samsung build - Snapdragon 835 seems to come with a security chip, which will be able to recognize if you try to boot a custom ROM and won't boot the device at all in that case. As Samsung build it, I'd guess Exynos will have the same "security" feature.

If it is still "systemless", it seems like a Magisk solution could possibly be the answer. We shall see, I am wondering if the solution will be like the Magisk module ROM, but just replacing most everything, rather than just select parts.
hello,
i used the xposed module "app settings" version 1.13 with android marshmallow before i updated to nougat. this module enables you to change DPI, font scale, locale, force fullscreen, persist in memory, etc. on a per app basis.
here is a link to the module:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xp...2014-05-14-t2437377/post63835421#post63835421
i have not found any possibility to get this working on nougat as there is no xposed for nougat and it seems there is no more custom rom with these options.
is it possible to get this module working with magisk?

Downgrade to marshmallow or write xposed for nougat. The first is easy, the second will make many people happy over here.

It would be just ultra hard to code that, or just impossible.
years ago (before xposed got famous) some custom roms (paranoid,...) had these functions.
i would go back to marshmallow only because of this missing features but there is no marshmallow rom for my new oneplus 5.
is it really impossible to get it working with magisk? the code itself (version 1.13) worked without any problems on marshmallow.

You'll need to manually edit files and apps and Magic Mount them with Magisk. Alternatively you could possibly do some things with some cumbersome scripts. Magisk can't change code of running apps, just replace/add already modified files and run scripts at boot.
In other words: No, IMO it's not worth the extreme hassle and you won't get the same thing as you would with Xposed.

The process is simple.....But there are a few requirements that you need to do before hand.
1. Unlock your Bootloader
2. Patch your Boot.img using Magisk
3. Install Twrp. If compatible with your device. In my case I used "Geiti94" Twrp he provided (TWRP_A30_A305F_V3_ASH1.tar) this worked for me even though I've got a A305GN and was flashed using Odin.
4. Download GSI rom of your choice just make sure you download the right version for your phone otherwise you'll face endless bootloops. *****You can use "Treble Info.apk" ***** to find out what your phone system supports as there are 4 types
5. Boot into Twrp, Tap on Wipe then Advanced Wipe then select "Dalvik/Art Cache" System" Data" leave everything else as it is. Then swipe to Wipe.
6. Then go back to Twrps main screen and tap on Install and navigate to where you put the GSI file by Selecting Storage then Install Image this will show only GSI image files. Then select your GSI file then select which Partition to flash to.....Which is SYSTEM.... DONE.

My system is a Arm64 compatible with a SystemAB GSI

I haven't experienced any sort of errors/bugs yet. Everything I use on a daily basis works, but if there are any errors/bugs they have yet to show themselves.
You have to understand that there are going to be errors/bugs in any custom firmware you flash to your phone, that's just the way it is nothing's 100% besides Stock.

Yes, it is already rooted. I did it with the last one published in AOSP, published 4 days ago I think, download the version with gapps, you ride it with TWRP (it's in img) and that's it

I have found that not all the Android 10 gsi I've used have this feature, Pixel Experience Q 28102019 being one of them.
so I've flashed this zip via TWRP to regain this ability. I know it doesn't work on all of them but its worth a try for those of you out there willing to give it a go.
I have successfully flashed the aosp 10 gsi (latest one) seems to be working really good.
The transitions seems to be little bit lagging with the stock launcher, and using other launcher totally removes the way task changer works. Which launcher are you guys using?

NFC Screen Off
Read NFC tags when screen is off.
Disable NFC tagging sound.
Tap to pay when screen is off.
ALWAYS include Magisk installation logs when posting an issue.
Useful integrations: NFC Card Emulator Pro - Tasker
Installation metrics: Grafana dashboard
How does it work?
The NFC app is patched during installation into a `modded` version. This `modded` version is injected at boot time by service.sh so that the phone thinks the screen is always on and unlocked.
This patch only applies to NFC Service so it does not impact any other functionality of the phone that involves screen state detection.
The `modded` app was generated using this method.

Not yet. It's on the To-Do list.
Thanks for enabling this option.
It may not necessarily be a bad thing that it breaks safety net.
Enabling mobile payments while phone is locked is NOT a good idea. Your phone will be vulnerable to money theft with some special NFC devices. They can get close to your phone while it is in your pocket or purse and that is enough for them to steal your money.

For now, it only works for reading NFC tags. For payments in stores, the phone still needs to be at least on. If the module is working for tags but breaks your payments, leave a comment.

From what I understand from feedbacks, the apk app can have several names:
NfcNci
NQNfcNci
NpxNfcNci
Those names do not depend of the device but depend of the ROM.
Two apk with the same name will in fact be different. They are very related to the framework of the ROM.
Loading an APK from another ROM even if it is the same Android version will have little chance to work.
I cannot detect all the specs of the device. Magisk only gives me the Android SDK Version that's all.
I could make an apk for every ROM.
2 possibilities:
- Zip framework.apk + (NQ/Npx)NfcNci.apk, send it to a server. The server will return a custom apk just for your ROM. This is the one that Magisk will use.
- Build the custom APK directly on the phone, but I cannot find how to run apktools, jarsigner, etc on Android (because there is no JAVA env on Android)

I tried to do it myself a while ago but ran out of steam before i even got all the dependencies running on my computer lol. I can modify your magisk package to work with it myself.
I like your idea of a server that automatically runs the process to patch the apk. Would every use need to upload both the framework.apk and nfcnci or just the nfc? The only concern I would have is bandwithd as the framework apk is 30+ MB's. If you could build the server into a docker container I think it would be easy enough for others to host you could probably find some people willing to host it for free. Another option could be using a google drive account to allow people to upload the apk's for their phone then batch process them all and sort them by model/build # or something to cover most phones/roms . I have a gapps for business account with unlimited storage I could probably lend for this purpose
Once again thanks for all your work! If you have a bitcoin address i'd like to buy you a beer
G'day
I'm sick of google and everything they are about. Don't be evil my arse. I already do the simple stuff like using brave browser and duck duck go search. I'm hoping someone can advise me on how to strip my phone of as much google as possible and replace with aosp alternatives. Or even just point me towards some guides on it.
I am using a Samsung galaxy a22 5g rooted with magisk stock rom.
Thanks
I think you might want to flash a custom ROM, then use something like MicroG Magisk, NanoDroid or FOSSApps. Ungoogling an already Googled stock ROM might be more pain than flashing something community developed.
I'm currently running Lineage with Magisk GApps (so I can remove them anytime) and I'm slowly getting ready for the transition. So I'm also looking for more information.
I set up a VPS for myself (might be an overkill for you, but inspiration nonethelss) and I'm hosting OnlyOFFICE Community there and using their apps, I also host my own BitWarden password storage and a mail server (was kinda pain to set it up with all the methods for spam verification). This way some of my most sensitive data is kept on an encrypted drive on a server I myself control.
Then there's getting apps which are mainly available through Google Play - I found that uptodown does host apks, but that's far from an actually viable option (considering you really have to trust them when you're downloading apps there). Alternative stores providing the same apps as Google Play are always kinda worrying to use & trust.
So that's my two cents worth and a starting point, I'll also gladly accept some tips & tricks to accomplish this entirely, it's a long-lasting dream to leave Google altogether.

i think it's better to use a custom aosp rom with no gapps
if you still want stock rom :
make a recovery backup of "system" just in case
mount system
the folders that have apps are :
system/app
system/priv-app
system/product/app
system/product/priv-app
(if you use A11+ check also system-ext/app and priv-app)
delete anyhing related to google
if you don't want to delete use lucky patcher or titanium backup to freez them
if you choose freezing, make a recovery backup of "data"

Hey thanks for the reply and info. Flashing an aosp custom rom would be my usual go to. However I've been on an oppo with unlockable bootlader for last 18 months and now I got this samsung I find there is zero rom dev on this phone. The only options I can find are GSI which is a new concept to me and I'm a little uncertain about going that route.

Cheers for this. Agree on the first statement but having been on an oppo with unlockable bootlader for last 18 months and now I got this samsung I find there is zero rom dev on this phone. Do you think I should go with a GSI rom? If safe and stable I'm happy to do the research because I'd love to get a custom aosp rom going on this.
Afaik this samsung can't even access fastboot gotta use the Samsung flashing software instead and the only thread on twrp for this phone is experimental and doesn't seem to be confirmed as working by anyone.
Hence why so far I've stuck with stock and magisk
I used to flash heaps of roms and kernels on older devices but this whole GSI thing is new to me. If it's dicey I'll go the TB route with the folders you pointed me to. Cheers

if yo can backup system/vendor/boot/dtbo/data then go for it
if not , you will have to reflash the stock if anything goes wrong ...

looks like your options are risky , google the app name before freezing ...
don't freez :
"google Extservice" or something like that
"settingintelligencegoogle" and "modulemetadatagoogle"

Cool cheers for your help mate. Touche on the last point. New job with nice pay bump coming so that will be the go I think.
I use Graphene OS on my Pixel 6 and CalyXOS on the 4a. Both are very good degoogled ROMs.
I built a Magisk module for this some time ago. However, it's very likely that it won't work anymore and will probably cause a bootloop. I'm only posting it in case someone wants to use the repo as inspiration.

you forgot to mention that both GrapheneOS and CalyXOS are available ONLY for the Pixel phones
and the Pixels have a unique feature - the bootloader can be locked back AFTER flashing a custom ROM
Well I stand corrected ( said the man in the orthopaedic shoes)
