Try uninstalling all the drivers and try one again using x64 (I know you probably did it already, but just confirming).
Maybe try doing a factory reset?
So i uninstalled the drivers using the uninstaller application that came with the download then i deleted the files off the computer.
went to the captivate wiki on xda, downloaded the 64 bit drivers from that link (look exactly the same as the other links), then ran the installer application from that download.
what happened was at the end of the install wizard it said that: "mss install wizard was not completed... install wizard was not succesfully installed samsung usb driver for mobile phones.".
I did however notice that at one point in the wizad it called the driver x86 instea of x64.
i would be lieing if i didnt say i hated samsung right now. o yea and i think at&t too. ha ha
Thanks for the help! : )
so in addition to hours spent on other days, im about 5 hours into trying to make the phone connect today.
it seems worse now, it only sometimes sees a device it cant recognize.
i tried more batches of driver uninstall/installs and i even downloaded the full kies.
nothing seems to make it go. im about to lob this thing across the room. any other suggestions or people with a similar problem?
any help would be much appreciated.
1) Scrub your system again of all Samsung drivers.
2) Go to Samsung Software & Firmware Downloads and get the Mini Kies program.
3) Install Mini Kies, this will install drivers.
4) Set USB settings on phone to ask on connection, Settings>Applications>USB Settings>Ask on Connection
5) Connect phone to computer
6) Select Mass Storage when the phone asks
7) Mount phone to computer, depends on which ROM you are running
8) Report back,
I'm running Windows 7 x64 Home Premium and have no troubles connecting. Hope this helps.
ok thanks for the tips.
Here's what i did:
Download mini kies from the link (i noticed that there were driver there to but i did not download that link)
Set phone to ask on connection
plug phone into computer
set to mass storage.
mount sd card
computer says "usb device not recognzed"
Mini Kies still says "please connect mobile phone"
i scream!
what do you suggest i do from here?

Have you tried a rear USB port instead of a front? I don't know why but many have claimed this was the trick. It should not work, but for some reason it does for some.

The usb ports on the back of the computer are usually connected directly to the motherboard. The usb ports located other places on the computer are usually connected to the mother board via a secondary card of some type - this adds another level of hardware and software drivers required to make those ports work. Also it is not unusual for some usb to operate at different power levels - often referred to as powered and non powered ports.
So not all ports are the same which is why some people have different results on different ports on their computer.
One other option that sometimes works: turn on usb debugging in settings/applications/development. Then connect the usb. Pull down the notification window and select the button that says something like "select to copy files...". This brings up a dialogue box asking to mount the phone, and you select that.

alright i tried
every single usb port (it a laptop btw sorry should of said that earlier)
and also with and without debugging
computer still says usb device not recognized.
is there any more info that anyone needs? Tried hooking the phone up to a mac also (snow leopard osx laptop) no luck still.

I have built many machines and never had a device work on one USB port and not on another.
All my USB devices that require power, require an actual AC adapter -As for unpowered ports - never heard of that. Powered and unpowered hubs yes - but not unpowered ports.

First, just to make this clear all usb ports are powered, and so long as they are in compliance with the usb standard they are powered to 5v.
Second, what you referring to with powered/non powered usb hubs is a usb hub that has a secondary power source (ie includes ac power cable maybe) vs a usb hub that is only powered by the usb serial bus via the usb connecter to the computer.
What was referring to in powered/non powered usb port is a technology included in some ports that allows that port to use the power of two usb ports in one port - not sure but I believe it is an ibm technology - which is some times referred to slangly and inaccurately as powered usb
Now the point of my post was to point out even though there is a universal standard for usb - depending on how these ports are actually connected to the serial bus on the mother board will affect they way they perform - ie usb on the back of the computer that is mounted directly to the mother board serial bus vs one connected via a pci card.
And even though you have never experienced differing performance in your usb ports does not mean that it doesn't happen - it is actually quite common particularly with devices that both connect via usb as well as charge its battery via usb.
I currently have a computer with 7 usb ports all of which will connect and work with my wife's ipod - but I have found two of these ports that will not charge her ipod. most likely this failure to charge her ipod is due to the hardware (or the software driver for the said hardware) in between these two ports and the mother board.
In all of the computers you have built have you built any that had usb ports mounted directly on the mother board serial bus that you also connected a usb pci card to allow for more usb ports? I guarantee you if you do this often enough you wil eventually build a computer that has usb ports with differing performance.
while the info on usb is nice : ) i would very much appreciate any help on gettingmy phone connected. thanks!

I'm guessing by now you have tried all your ports, lol. have you tested your phone on other computers and/or with other usb cables?
One thing to try is check and see if there are any driver updates for the usb hardware in your computer. You can usually find these updates with the computer vendor and/or mother board manufacturer support.
Sorry I missed your post earlier about connecting to a mac - when you connected to the mac was your phone in debugging mode?
I don't know if it is necessary to connect to a mac, but to get some linux distros to mount the drives in cappi it has to be in debugging mode and while linux and NEXTstep are different they are in the same family, have the same ancestor. maybe if someone with a mac read s this they can let us know if it is needed.
If you keep connecting to different computer with no luck, try a different usb cable.
Actually its connecting to a pc. I just tried to connect to a mac wouldn't work there either.
But I've tried all the different combos of debugging and mass storage options it just says it doesn't recognize the usb device.
I have tried a bunch of different drivers and using both kies and mini kies.
Windows 7 64 bit

Captivate (stock everything)

getting unrecognized usb device is almost certainly a driver issue - what ever kept it from working with the mac is something else.
have you downloaded and installed the drivers dg has linked in his odin 3 one click thread?
Second have you had a chance to check if your computer had any usb driver updates? One of my machines would not properly identify my phone that I tried reinstalling drivers on and I found there was and update for the mother board usb controller - after updating it instantly recognized it.
I am having the same issue with an added twist, which is that some USB ports will rapidly disconnection/reconnect the device to windows even though I havent unplugged it.
I have/had adb working on both my old laptop, and desktop. And like the OP I have spent many hours trying to get this to work. Very frustrating.
Alright, So I'm looking to help a friend get to the point where they can plug in their Droid 3 and it actually work.
Have plugged into every USB port, have installed the drivers Verizon reccomends installing for the device.
Basically we called up Verizon, and requested to get a actual OEM/Motorla cable. They sent a actual Motorola cable. Still doesn't work.
From what I understand the device has only been detected ONCE, and it was unsuccessful at finding drivers, now when you plug it in it doesn't even try to look for drivers. It just charges. gives you no options to mount or anything.
I've shot in and uninstalled alot of the drivers so it would cause it to re-detect and that attempt was unsuccessful as well. Uninstalled the Motorola driver application and did the same thing over, Uninstalled the USB drivers. Still nothing.
The device does run the most current version of Android, It is running stock. any clues?
perhaps try to manually install the drivers control panel/hardware/devices an printers
Have you checked the actual setting for the usb connection itself? Is it on charge only mode? Try a different computer if you can, if not, see if you can change the setting for when you first plug it into a computer, you should get the options of pc mode, charge only, media sync, and hard disk.

Jell - I'll shoot in and give that a shot if I can see if I can, Is i'll check for a driver package on the forums I guess see if anyone has one
Josh -- Not sure how to actually set the setting for the usb connection rather then when you plug it in and it asks for you to set it.
You plug it in and it charges, Doesn't ask what mode you want to put it in. Its like you're plugging it into a charger.
I have the same problem with connecting. My phone isn't recognizing that its plugged into a computer, it thinks it is plugged into a wall charger. It would be nice to know if anyone have figure this problem out.
Hello forum !
i have used a couple of hours now trying to find a solution to my problem both here on the site but also on the internets.
i just recently became the happy owner of a Note, but i have been completely unable to connect it to any of my pc's ive had a galaxy i9000 that i didnt have any problems with but with my note it wont work.
under win7 64bit - when i plug the usb cable a "boc opens" in the drop down menu called MTP and when i klick that nothing happens, ive trid the varies ways of removing the sd card unmounting it etc. and debugging and so on but wont work.
it randomly connected once but then it dissapeared from my computer.
under winXP 32bit it just says usb device not recognised, i really wanna root this thing so i can play with the true power of this amazing device.
and on both pc's ive tried with kies and driver packs both together and seperately.
anyone out there that can help me out with this problem ?
cheers
and happy new year

Before connecting it to the PC with the cable, click "connect storage to pc" in the USB settings. After clicking it, then it will ask you to connect to pc. If you connect to pc before clicking it will not connect.

Hello i have done that but the same happens ive done it like it says i should i just dont get why my pc wont recognise it , when i press it and then it waits for me to plug it in, i do that the dialogue box shuts and then nothing happens besides windows saying unrecognised device connected
Strange, Mine connect fine just like how marinervijay mentioned. Go to Settings > Wireless> Usb Utilities and press connect first and then insert your USB, then press connect USB. Voila. There should be a window prompting to open in your windows just like when u insert a flashdrive to ur computer.
iknow its supposed to work like that.
the problem is that it doesnt work :/
Okay, have u tried resetting your Note to factory default?
no i havent tried that, because its all new it didnt work since i got it, i never thought that that might help, ill give it a go.
thx
On another, you might have a defective USB given to you by ur retailer. Perhaps you can contact them somehow and ask them to replace your USB?
do you mean the USB cable delivered with the phone ?
Cheers
Yes. Could be a defect. I'd suggest you check with your retailer if it is replaceable if none of what mentioned is working for you.
Hi,
Have you ticked USB debugging? Its under Settings>Apps>Development
Then it should show usb connection in notification tab, tap it and set usb storage as on.
There may be few problems here so I will suggest different solutions, one might work for you
1. Turn off your antivirus and connect, it should work, see after connecting mobile that does it install something near "Bottom clock"?, open "my computer" see if it gives you N7000 (give it a minute). sometimes your computer settings are a problem
2. If no, Install latest Kies on your computer as it downloads Samsung drivers for your phone
3. after connecting 1st time, computer takes some time to recognize your mobile--be patient--
4. if all of above doesnot work, restart computer, connect USB to another (or same) port (turn off antivirus) and see
5. Nothing, try in Setting>Applications>Development>debugging Mode
6. if not, try on another computer
7. still does not connect, change USB cable
8. Still nothing there might be a issue with your device, but I will not conceive that every quickly, trying all above few times should resolve the issue..

Okey ive tried them all now, more then a few times most of these ive tried already and the antivirus isnt an issue as i dont have any on this pc. i think the problem either lays at the usb cable or the device itself. i will try and get to borrow a cable from a friend or something
Cheers for all the replies and helpfull inputs

Hey,
I am able to get USB storage, and I got root access thru the batch files and help provided in this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
I have Kies installed and this probably helped detect the phone.
Hope this helps..
USb Problem
Hi I've had the same problem.
I have been using the Note quite happily as a Mass USB storage since early December. Plugged it in this morning and I don't get anything. I have also tried the debugging and all the other things listed. Here's what I get:
Usb debugging on - just a sound and a charging indication
Usb debugging off -usb connected Mtp connected on the notification pull down page. When I click on notification it just shuts the window.
I have tried dialling *#7284# and selecting USB PDA which didin't do anything for me but others seem to have had some luck. See this link:
blog.vacs.fr/index.php?post/2010/12/24/How-to-repair-the-USB-not-detected-problem-on-Android-Samsung-phones
I will be rebooting tonight but I don't really want to.
only the Samsung USB wire works
I had this problem today. The Note would never connect the USB or external storage. I searched and found this thread.
I then noticed it was another USB cable (I gave about 1,000 now!). I tried the Samsung one, and it worked first time.
It is annoying, because these cables are normally swappable with any device. It appears Samsung have defined their own standard. The great thing about standards, of course, is that there are some many to choose from!
USB cable was defect - and replaced
Thanks for the help everyone
For some reason, out of nowhere, my computer or phone are deciding not to connect to each other, which it was working fine last night and hundreds of times before that on the same laptop, suddenly when i plug my phone in now it says drives failed to install, and so i downloaded that latest LG Android Device Drivers, and still wont work. Any thoughts on how to fix this ?
Do you get the USB connection icon on your phone? If so, this shouldn't be that hard to fix. It's probably just a driver issue. I would uninstall the LG and Android drivers and start over. Now, if you don't get the USB icon on your phone at all, then you either have a bad USB cable or SD card. I had this problem for months before I figured out it was my USB cable that was the problem.
If driver issue with Windows, uninstall drivers, reboot, install drivers, reboot, after Windows loads then plug in the phone, then try everything starting with Charge Only, then Mass Storage, then Internet Connection Mode, and all the drivers should install fine
If this fails you can try ADB over Wifi in the Play Store. It bypasses a lot of issues if you are just trying to use adb on your phone. If you need files off your phone try Wifi File Transfer. No wires or cables needed. Both just need an existing Wifi network to transfer/push/pull files.
My HTC 8x for T-Mobile doesn't show up in windows explorer. It suddenly stopped after working perfectly from the day I got it. I thought it may be my computer, like a missing driver or a setting but it doesn't work on my work computer, while my friends lumia works perfectly on the same computer.
Did there a setting I switched off in the phone?
I really don't want to hard reset cause I have so many email accounts set up with the phone. Any help would be great!

or try to delete driver and reconect phone.
didn't do anything. Plus it doesn't work on another computer that detects my friends lumia.
Anyone have any ideas? Please any help?
I had this problem on my computer that was previously connected to my Lumia920, and the second time I have connected it, nothing detected. I just plugged/unplugged the device several times, and after 5-6 times, there it was. Is ur device functioning properly? Is there any sound of connection from ur computer when u connect ur device?
Is your phone locked, by chance? I noticed that if the phone is locked it will not expose the file subsystems unless its unlocked.
some people have also reported that using a different usb port in your computer also helps.
Make sure you are using short USB cable that is working with another phone. Half of problems i have with computer "not detected" phones was due to low quality USB cables and under-powered USB ports, especially ones located at front of computer. Try to experiment with different USB cables and USB ports on different computers, this sounds stupid but helps in half a cases .

Watch for Memory card!
Hi,
Try to remove the memory card and reattach the device.
It solved the problem for me and read on some places about it.
Be careful what size and 'shape'(brand) memory card you use as it can block usb usage as it seems for me.
Method 1:
Disconnect all the external devices (printers, scanner, USB (Universal Serial Bus) drives, etc...)Except mouse and the keyboard and then boot up.
If this corrects the issue then add the devices back one at a time until you discover the piece of hardware causing the issue. Then get any updated drivers\software for the device.
Method 2:
If you still come across the issue, I suggest you to run Hardware Troubleshooter and then check for the issue.
Method 3:
If the above step does not help us to diagnose the issue, uninstall the drivers for USB [Universal Serial bus] host controller and restart the computer. Let Windows install the generic drivers and then see if it helps you to fix the issue.
a) Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, then Device Manager in the search box.*
b) If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
c) Look for the device under USB [Universal Serial bus] host controller, right click on it and select Uninstall.
d) Reboot the computer.
e) On reboot, Windows 7 should re-install the drivers automatically.
You may also refer the steps from the manufacture website or contact Nokia for any known issues.

Try installing the Nokia Software Recovery Tool or the Nokia Care Suite. It should install all of the drivers necessary to connect your device. There is probably a driver corrupted.
the question you need to ask is if your friend has the same model Lumia as you. If he doesn't, it could be a problem with the driver on your PC.
If he does have the same model as you, it has to be a problem with your phone. You need to do a factory reset.
Have you checked if it works with the Windows Phone app?
Also, there is really no reason to have a need to connect it to a PC. As long as you store your documents and photos in OneDrive, you can easily access them from your PC without having to connect your device.
