Monthly Security Update - October 2022 for US (Unlocked)? - Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Questions & Answers

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering how often Galaxy S20 FE 5G owners here receive their security updates, because my own unit (an SM-G781U1 US unlocked model) hasn't seen one since August 2022, and searching for updates via Settings doesn't net me anything new.
Is there a cache that I should empty to make sure I get the security updates in a timely fashion, or is everybody else getting the same treatment here?
I must add that I live in France, I have a mobile contract with a French provider, and I bought this phone new from Rakuten three months ago.
According to DevCheck, the phone was manufactured on July 26, 2021. It came with Android 11 out of the box, and is now running Android 12 (One UI 4.1).
I don't expect a switch to Android 13 / One UI 5 until sometime next year, but I was under the impression that this model would get monthly security updates.

FWIW, my unit received the October Security Update today, so I suppose I should consider myself lucky. Apparently, Samsung is planning on upgrading us to One UI 5 (Android 13) sometime in December, according to GSM Arena.
Thanks for watching and take care!

As it were, the monthly update must have also brought some power management fixes, because it seems that battery life is improved on my unit. I keep the screen at 120 Hz and do a lot of Twittering and the like, and battery will get me through a solid day and a half now, instead of barely a day before the update.

I feel like its getting less often, I know eventually its supposed to go to quarterly, but that shouldnt have happened yet right?
I also didnt get september and went straight to october.
My guess is we'll maybe get one more before we get OneUI5 update which in my guess will be mid late january if last OS update is anything to go off of
This seemed to happened last year too where security updates slowed down when samsung was working on UI4

I've switched to a OnePlus 9 that's now running Android 13, but I wonder if regarding Samsung, their monthly update policy doesn't differ from one market to another.
My unit has a US (unlocked) ROM that precludes me from getting 5G connectivity, so maybe in the US the update schedule is different from, say, Europe for this model.
As for One UI 5, it should land on the S20 FE sometime in December.

Why no September security update yet ?

It has a good year for Samsung since the launch of S8 and I owned that device for a good three months with consistent monthly updates regarding security and but fixes. Although we have received a major update for Note 8 that contains August patch but we are one week before October and there seems to be a delay for September update. Or are they going for Oreo with October updates as a "double O" package?
I haven't seen boo about the Note 8 getting Oreo other than it's in the works. I don't think we'll see it until after the new Pixel launches, and probably well after.
Since my first update was labeled "T-Mobile," it's likely the carriers are holding up the updates, as usual. Hopefully, Project Treble will be fully baked into Oreo so security updates won't be an issue anymore.
I got a security update 2 days ago on my TMO version, and a TMO update firmware a few days before that.

Question about updates

Hey XDA, I've got a question about phone software updates that maybe someone could enlighten me on:
What determines when a particular phone will get an update? I guess I'm not entirely clear on how updates are rolled out.
For example: I have a Note 9 that I bought refurbished. It was originally running the AT&T version before I flashed the unlocked firmware. I currently use the note 9 with unlocked firmware (no carrier specific bloat, just samsung and facebook stuff) on the TMobile network.
Since I've started using the phone I've always been about a month or more behind on the latest updates. Currently I am on the December 1st 2018 Security update and I have been patiently waiting for the Pie update. Who/what determines when I will get this update? Is it Tmobile, At&t or samsung
OS Update releases are dependent on when the device manufacturer would release them in what country.
Being unlocked currently, you are waiting with the rest of us to get the update after the other 4 carriers have released it. Right now we are all waiting on TMO, once they have released we should not be far behind.
They do this to make sure there won't be any issues regardless of the carrier you are on. Sucks, I know.

Okay, folks - Motorola does not care about Moto One Zoom anymore

First of all. Three Moto devices already received Android 10. Few of them received December 1st security patch. Moto G7 Plus (2,5 times cheaper device) got Android 10 BETA today.
As an owner of Moto One Zoom who spent 450euros on "top" Moto smartphone, wanted to compare stuff from above to my phone:
- October 1st security patch (received it... three days ago, funny.)
- any signs of Android 10? no.
Plus look at my conversation with Moto Support. The same story was with UK support and polish one.
me: Rafał
Moto Agent: Karen
CONVERSATION:
Karen: Hi, my name is Karen. How may I help you?
Karen: Hello! Welcome to Motorola Canada technical Support!
Rafał: hey Karen
Rafał: first of all: i'm very dissapointed with Motorola
Rafał: I spent 450 euros on moto one zoom which lacks of security updates and OS update
Rafał: currently this is your most expensive model in EU
Karen: I would be glad to assist you today! Just in order to document this conversation, would you be so kind of helping me to confirm your full name, email address, phone number and the country from where you are contacting us?
Rafał: let me explain more...
Rafał: Rafał, [email protected]_HERE, Poland
Karen: I see, did you purchase your phone in Canada or Poland?
Rafał: Poland
Rafał: but it does not matter
Karen: Okay, I would like to inform you that you have contacted now the Canada support, Rafał.
Rafał: your two times cheaper devices are getting regular security updates and few of them already got Android 10 update
Rafał: even 2,5times cheaper moto g7 plus which is 1,5y older than moto one zoom got Android 10 in soak
Rafał: this is not fair
Rafał: where should I expect Android 10 update for my phone?
Rafał: and some newer security patch? (the last one i received this week, was for October 1st - was more than dissapointed)
Rafał: polish and uk support couldn't answer.
Rafał: that's why i'm here
Karen: I would like to explain to you that updates are sent to phones over the air as they become available, there is not a way for us to know the specific launch date. For the most accurate information, I would suggest you to contact your local support.
Rafał: before they "become available" they should be developed, dont you think?
Rafał: why they "become available" for cheaper devices first?
Rafał: and why crucial security updates are not released for your "top" model first?
Karen: Updates are sent out by batches, for Canada, in some cases they are launched by the carriers.
Karen: For the most accurate information, please check again with your local support.
Rafał: so you're telling me that next update for my RETEU moto one zoom is ready and it's waiting for its release?
Rafał: as i said - they dont know literally ANYTHING
Rafał: so how can i get ANY informations?
Karen: My apologies Rafał but we do not have information related to updates from other countries, I can talk only on how they work in Canada.
Rafał: this gonna be the same firmware
Rafał: RETAIL one
Rafał: so when canada should expect Android 10 or security updates?
Rafał: you know, I can prepare link for OTA, sideload it to my phone and install
Does anyone have android 10 on the One Zoom?

No problem here with security patches.
PPHS29.59-51-3 with also 1. January security patch arrived in Germany!
Nothing in Romania.
Got it today. Hope next one is android 10.
I Poland, got it yesterday.
What is weird, this is literally the least active device on XDA that I have seen.
Yeah u ar right, and no one bothers to correct the dimension of the display in the description of the phone.
It is a shame seeing a high-end device with such a lame support.
I am waiting for Android 10 update before starting to work on AOSP/LineageOS builds, but I think they will neglect this device.
PPHS29.59-49-8 with March security patch arrived in Brazil.
Got it in Poland today.

6/16 update: More broken promises from Motorola. Not a happy customer. My previous phone was a moto X4 Android One, so I know all about Motorola reneging on OS upgrade guarantees. Honestly, Motorola's misuse of the A1 branding at this point is dishonest verging on fraudulent.
I bought my Zoom exactly two weeks ago, it's a great phone and I love it but they're not going to do me dirty on OS upgrades twice in a row. I just filed a return and refund request. It's within the two-week return window so hopefully I'll get a full refund and take my dollars elsewhere. OnePlus 7t looks nice...
Here in Brazil I received the security patch PPHS29.59-49-16 of July 1st. unfortunately the upgrade to Android 10 has not yet come out and Motorola people say they don't know anything about the update.
Don't think android 10 is likely at this point. I'm probably going to attempt to sell this phone and get the new OnePlus Nord. At least that has guaranteed updates for 2 years. It's a shame, really, it's got good hardware and could've had much more potential, but not many people really know about this phone.
Have a little more patience.
I know the wait is frustrating but the test of Android 10 One Zoom is already in its final phase and will soon be released to everyone. :fingers-crossed:
Wow! That's good news! If it's really true.

Were Unlocked software updates timely?

I know in the past, before the S10, Samsung was pretty terrible about getting software updates to the unlocked versions. Taking several months longer, than the carrier versions.
So how did Samsung do with getting unlocked software updates on the S10? I'm curious to know before I decide which Galaxy S20 I preorder.
I have a Verizon S10 and I was quite pleased with the promptness of the software updates. I'm impressed we even got Android 10.
I was in the beta and my unlocked was a couple of weeks at least behind the beta people with locked phones when the final came out.
Same question here. I was looking at firmware listings on sammobile and it seems that at least for the latest firmware ...CTA3 U1 versions are dated 02-03-2020, whereas for U model only T-Mobile has CTA3 and is dated later 02-09-2020. Would love to hear from someone with unlocked model about their update experience. I've stopped buying unlocked precisely for these update delays, but would love to loose T-Mobile crap and silly 4/5g LTE icons if Samsung has gotten their act together.

I'm running an unlocked S10e on T-Mobile. Got the February security update on 4Feb. Wife's S10e we got directly from T-Mobile, it still hasn't had the Feb update pushed.
While those of us wiih unlocked phones were more than a week behind everyone else getting out of beta on Android 10, we received the February patch before some locked phones. It would be unusual for Samsung to push anything out to the unlocks early but they did on the last patch.

Sm-G781w on Koodo Android 11 update.

Has anyone got this update yet? Is there somewhere to download it?
I wouldn't expect an update for a while. Look at the most recent one, it came out in December and they skipped November.
If you want fast OS updates get a pixel phone because canadian carriers are notoriously slow
