Question Auto Detect Workout not detecting me walking - Samsung Galaxy Watch 5

I've had the watch for about a month and can't seem to get the watch to auto detect when I leave to walk the dogs for a few miles. I had the Amazfit GTS 4 prior and it would usually pick it up and many times too sensitive. I checked permissions and I did find one for the auto detect in the notifications and I turned that on and will test some more. Just wondering if anyone else has similar issues. I have the 5 Pro and my phone is the Fold 4. Thanks.

To get it working, you have to walk for 10 minutes without breaks ( 1 minute or more)

Thx, does it "credit" you for the 10min part? I think I'll just stick to manual start as my doggies make me stop at tree's and light poles....lol.

Yes, it does. I walk for a little more than 10 minutes from the outside parking to my stadium seat (for a football game) and it credits the first 10 minutes saying I've walked for a part of a mile already.

Thanks! I'll give it a go on auto when I walk the dogs tonight! Seemed dumb if it didn't credit you the 10min. I had the Amazfit GTS 4 and the GPS and battery life were outstanding. But the auto start would rarely work or credit me. So I turned up the sensitivity and it was great for a laugh. I would walk to my truck from my work building and once I sat and put seat belt on it would start the workout. After about 15sec it would stop and read out loud how I went 0.00 miles in 15sec. So I sold it on Ebay and came back to the dark side. Thanks for the replies!

I9000 GPS: Fixes on 10 satellites, Claims 10m Accuracy, But Is Really 50m away. Fix?

Many of these GPS fixes are bogus. People claim that after installing a new modem or new settings, their phone locks onto 10 satellites with 10m accuracy.
BUT have they ever checked to see if the 10m is really accurate? NO.
Mine locks onto 10 satellites with a 10m accuracy. But in Google Earth it shows me as being 40-50 meters away from my current location. On top of that, it keeps drifting even though I'm not moving!!!
Most people don't know what they are talking about. Also most GPS "fixes" are garbage. They work for some people, don't for others. Exactly with the same proportions as a stock ROM. My GPS is satisfying since JL2. Yes it takes a while to lock but at least it works.
BUT have they ever checked to see if the 10m is really accurate? NO.
That statements
not accurate either .
Just tested my GPS out of interest . Upstairs in a bedroom >phone on window .
Accuracy about 100% bang on the nose .
Only fix i have is that my GPS config file is set to a more local server exactly as faster fix does using JPY modem .
Swop from Google maps to My Tracks and its out by about 2 metres .
Co Pilot about 2 metres out .

swoop bim bam tralalala.....
Instant lock. Have the same accuracy, on the tip of the nose! For like 5 mins (sometimes less, sometimes more), then the marker starts jumping around randomly - WITHOUT moving the phone.
Try to disable a-GPS fixes + that other setting in JPY and check if its still "bang on the nose" or it will bang you from behind also.

Its not on A-GPS when tested and its default settings as in past roms and accuracy has always been OK even with Eclair tested it enough times to be sure .
Yes it does often jump about but only INSIDE A BUILDING not in normal use .
If it had the GPS problems that some have it would have simply been returned to the vendor as unfit for the purpose for repair or replacement . Why keep something that does not work ???.

Seriously man , it jumps even clear sky view no building here (for me and I guess for some other ppl).
If it doesnt for you , you are one of the lucky ones . (If you was static outside a building for 5 mins and watched it, which I doubt but who knows )

Huh sorry man, my reply was to the swoop guy and his working GPS . a-GPS is the thing where it gets the position from the GSM signal too I think? (user wireless networks option under Location ....) but it wont help you .

OMG! I have the same story! I opened Google Maps, and then put on the GPS and put it to the window. It jumped to 30 meters from me for 5 seconds and then suddenly landed at my exact location and stayed there for 10 seconds.
THEN it started jumping around like a jackrabbit, even though I wasn't moving!

Droid 3 GPS Issues

I have had continuous issues with the Droid 3. One of my biggest issues is that the GPS seems completely unstable. I have tried turning on/off GPS options, etc...
Weather I try to use Google Maps or another application such as Endomondo, it cant maintain a lock. It seems to be able to locate me within 12 - 30 feet and then within a mile!!!
Using an application like Endomondo (running, cycling, etc), is completely useless. It can't track my location at all and when it does lock on, it only holds for a few seconds and then gone again.
I took the phone in to Verizon with a complaint about the GPs and screen issues (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239980) and the rep said both were normal for this phone...
Has anyone figured out a way to resolve this problem?
I, too, have the same issue with GPS. I use SportyPal Pro, and cannot use my Droid 3 when running/walking. I can go for a 5 mile run, and SportyPal will show I had ran 6 miles. I can run north to south in a straight line, and when finished, SportyPal will show that I went east and west as much as 400-500 feet off of that straight line and because of that can add anywhere from .1 miles to .5 miles to that 1 mile run.
It is so unreliable that I will use my older decommisioned Droid2 to run with. It works perfectly with the same software.
If anybody has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Are you using it for navigation only? Or a similar application for running/walking?
The reason I ask is because I do not notice a problem during navigation. It works great for that without any problems. Until I get to downtown Chicago. I almost expect problems there. Even with my Droid2.
i've only had issues with my gps in areas with lte. when im at college im in a city with lte support and my gps doesn't work (my friend who has an X also has issues with his gps when in areas with lte). when im home where there isnt lte support my gps works fine.
No it's not hardware mine works flawlessly and almost instantly fixes position, tho i have modded the gps.conf found in the etc folder. Details for tweaking this for your region can be found here:

Many thanx to 75markus for this.
Since we don't have a recovery yet to flash a zip you will need to edit the gps.conf file manually.
Oceanic region can be found in my sig below apart of my camera mod.

The problem I was having with the GPS from Day 1 is that I would occasionally notice that it would not start up at all when openning a GPS-dependant app (such as Maps or Weatherbug, etc). Whenever that happened, I would have to restart the phone, and then the GPS would be able to initialize again... at least, for a while.
Eventually, I was digging around in the setting and found the "VZW location services" option under "Location & security settings". I unchecked that option and, ever since, I've had no problem with the GPS. It seems that th VZW-based location services were causing the problem. Of course, since then, I've rooted and frozen all of the VZW bloat, so I might be able to turn that option back on with no ill effect. Still, it was as simple enough fix.
My issue might not sound exactly the same as yours, but you could give this a try and see if it helps.

I'm not having any GPS issues on my phone. Perhaps it's based on the area your in?
I know it's satellite but.. just a guess.

I have been experiencing the exact same problem and temporary solution (restarting) since day 1, on both my first and second droid 3's. Difference is, I've had VZW location services unchecked since around the time I first got the phones, and I am still experiencing the problem... even as recently as last night. I just double-checked the setting, and indeed, VZW location services is stil unchecked.
Once I have lock I usually have no problem continuously using GPS. Last night, I tracked a two and a half hour walk using the My Tracks app, including a 45 minute stop for dinner indoors. For the first 10 minutes, it couldnt find a signal, so I restarted. It got a lock almost instantly following the restart and never lost it after that. I had the app running for the whole excursion. As expected, it got a little confused while I was inside, but automatically picked the signal right back up when I got back outside and tracked my entire walk back home.

When you look at your walk on the map, is it true to where you actually walked? If I do that same walk on my phone, it will show me deviating off course as much as a 1/2 block and then back. I can tolerate that deviation once and maybe twice during my runs/walks. However, mine does it the majority of the time, adding bogus mileage to my walks/runs. In an hour's time, it will deviate approximately 20-30 times.

Just took a closer look at the track it recorded. I definitely do see these kinds of deviations, but they seem to only be in areas where I think it'd be reasonable to expect them. I live in a suburb, so I don't have any tall building to mess with the GPS reception, instead, I have somewhat steep hillsides. It seems I get a fair amount of deviation in the (significantly) hilly areas (it looks like I was walking down people's driveways, then across their front yards, when in reality I was just walking more or less straight down the sidewalk), but in the flat areas the line has almost no significant deviations, just some minor noise. Next time, at the risk of my fiance calling me a geek, I'll take my Droid 1 along for the trip, and see how the two records compare.

I've attached screenshots from two runs. D2 is this morning's run with my Droid 2. It's flawless. D3 is the last run I did with my Droid 3. Looking at it you can understand my disgust with it. Ignore the big missing section from both shots. I wouldn't want anyone knowing the exact location of where I live. Someone might come steal my Droid 3.

WOW... That is awful but a great example of the concern with this phone. You are actually doing much better than me. Mine is only able to triangulate down to about 20 feet and then it bounces between 20 and 300 feet!!!
I am going to call VZW today and see about a replacement phone but I doubt it will resolve the problem.
I just called VZW and once again, they said the accuracy was normal... They said none of their phones can lock on with the accuracy I described and if it has, I have been lucky. He said their phones are only accurate within 500 feet!
I explained to him that with that accuracy, it would be totally useless to use as a navigation device...
He looked through their documentation and said he has no record of other people having issues with the GPS... He also said he has no record of the blue tint when taking pictures.....
Oh well. I hope the replacement fixes it...

With that kind of change in accuracy, it seems like it isn't using the GPS as all, but just the cell towers. Is the GPS logo showing in the notification bar when that is happening? If it's there, is it blinking or solid?

My humble opinion of VZW representatives...they're all full of BS. They're going to tell you what they need to tell you to get your out of the store or off of the phone if you're not buying anything. A representative's main concern is sales. Sell him another phone, renew his contract, add a line, add a feature.
This issue may be better addressed to Motorola directly. I may make that phone call today.
I just got off the phone with Motorola tech support. Same story as VZW gives. There are NO known issues with the Droid 3. I asked about the GPS, the bluish pics the cam takes and battery life. The only thing the tech would say is the phone "needs to be evaluated"

different scenarios

bought the gear because I like the look of it I am only a low usage owner but when you need it its good ,,,like
1,,,,
I was fixing a TV and was behind the TV when my daughter rang to pick her up I was able to answer straight away without stopping what I was doing ,
2
I was riding my bike and could stop and take call straight away and leave phone in backpack
3
I was awaiting phone call at home and no reception in basement so i left phone upstairs to receive reception and took call downstairs on watch(the Bluetooth has a good range )
4
needed calculator i know i could of done this on phone but was cool to do it on my watch plus preserving phone battery and was more convenient at the time
5
several photos taken for quick access
6
play music as and when needed through out the day
7
reading text ,emails, chat on messages etc. all preserve battery life on phone and more accessible
OOoooh and nearly forgot looking at the time and not having to pull my phone out of my pocket and risk dropping it just for the time
these are just a few scenarios in a couple of days its really good when you think wow I really glad I bought the watch ,so far i am really happy and no regrets
please post your times when you thought YEEH that come in handy

Bluetooth Issues When Outside

I bought The Dash Pro by Bragi (truly wireless earbuds) and I'm having an odd problem where the audio drops in and out when the phone is in the front pocket of my jeans, only when I'm outside though. If I take it out and hold it by my side it's fine most of the time, if I hold it to my chest it's fine. If I'm inside it's fine, even if it's 15 feet away.
Is there any way to monitor the bluetooth signal strength, interference, transmission rate...anything?

Is it just media audio or is it also phone calls? I posted something like this a while back and couldn't get an answer. For me, I've never noticed the problem on phone calls, only listening to media. Here is the post:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/bluetooth-headset-breaks-outdoors-t3437693
Since then, the problem has worsened and I sometime get the breakup indoors also. I am currently running LineageOS and still having the problem. It is bad enough that I am thinking of getting a different phone even though I like everything else about my Nexus 6.
Only seemed to be with music. I was on NitrogenOS, and then went back to stock, locked and unrooted. Not much better. Taking off my bumper case helped a little bit. Bragi had me do firmware flashes two different ways and a few factory resets. Nothing solved the problem.
They also had me do a signal test by placing the phone down, in line of sight and walking away and counting my steps until it dropped out. About 29 steps inside and about 10 outside, which is a reduction by 1/3 but is still a good ten feet away...which makes the "dropping out in my pocket" issue even more odd. I've also noticed that the dropouts also seem to only occur when I'm walking. If I have it in my pocket and stand still it's usually good. WTF is going on with these?!
They also drop out frequently when connected to my Samsung Smart TV, inside obviously, and I'm only about 7 feet away from that (small living room). Yet they'll be fine 15 feet away from my cell phone. I've used them with my HP Windows laptop and they seem fine but that connection has received the least use.

I think it is the phone, not the bluetooth device. I've tried at least 3 different headsets and the results are the same. I use the same headsets with a Moto G and I don't get any dropout outdoors.
That could very well be the case, but doesn't explain why it doesn't work with my TV. I do have issues sometimes when connecting to my sunrise lamp/sleep tracker. It will say "connection lost" half the time during the initial connection. It was infuriating to setup. I'll probably be getting the Pixel 2 when it drops, and I just got an email from Bragi saying that firmware 3.0.3 is "coming in the nearest future". I'll give it a try with my roommates two phones (Note 5 and iPhone 7) and see if it still happens.
My issue is definitely related to the earbuds themselves. I just tried them with my mom's Galaxy S8 and went for a walk in the woods, as soon as I put the phone in my pocket it started dropping out, taking off her bumper case didn't help at all. I could completely kill the signal simply by putting my hand over the phone while it was in my pocket. I noticed that while using them with my TV, if I lean forward like 2 inches the connection is fine, but if I lean back like two inches it drops out...
Bragi is releasing an update next month, lets see if that resolves anything.

Watch 3 HR data drops off during Activity

Hey, got a question for those that exercise, or work out using their Galaxy Watch 3. Specifically, walking, but also running, treadmills, etc.
Do you see a dropping of your heart rate data at random times during your activity? Heart rate data appears perfect during the day, but will drop randomly during a walk, or treadmill activity.* This has happened both times I've tried the activities, I've only had the watch 3 days.
Anyone found a fix?
Can't speak for running, but for brisk walking the heart rate monitoring has been very good and consistent for me (within 1-2 of a chest strap monitor average after an hour).
It needs to be snug, not tight (it should not be able to slide around on your wrist in any direction). And should be above the orbital bone on your wrist.

I have the same problem when in cycling mode :/ At first i thought it was related to tightness of the strap or placement, but no matter how tight or loose it is, it drops, and seems to come back by random seconds or minutes after i notice it has gone.... Seems to only be in exercise mode, as i've never caught it doing it otherwise (i have continuous monitoring enabled)
In any case, the heart sensor really stops working at times during physical activities, especially running. And even at times during the day in a normal situation it stops working.
In any case I did not have this kind of problem with my Galaxy watch active 2.
I hope there will be an update soon.
To elaborate: This happened again for me today, and i took off the watch and could see the green sensor light still going.... tried to clean it and put it back on, but no success.... after ~10 minutes more on my bike, it "magically" started registering HR again.... Very weird.... Hope it is SW and not HW related though
At times I have the same problem with the heart sensor. In any case, it's very frustrating for a watch that calls itself sports / Fitness.
Well i found out that if i move the watch on my wrist during ECG, it ends with "Atrial fibrillation" and the curve looks like garbage
If i have the watch tight on the wrist, it ends sinusal and regular, clean...
So i'd guess that the drops might come from the watch not being secured enough on the wrist. Just tighten it very well before walk/run.

That was my first thought as well. But it behaves the same way when tightened everywhere from "comfortably loose" to "i think i cut off blood circulation to my hand" :/
early firmware issues perhaps? did you reboot the watch (pressing the bottom button until you see "rebooting" on the display)?
if you experienced better results from older galaxy watches then give the firmware some time to mature.
i use my elliptical daily and whilst i don't like to have a watch on my arm , i left it on to test the auto exercise feature. it picked up i was using an elliptical and the stats/vitals all looked in line with what i expected -- so no dropouts in hr. ive the lte version.
If it's not firmware (and probably not - mine was great out of the box), then it's a hardware issue (wasn't there a clear film on the back of the watch - did you remove that?).
I have not tested running, but brisk walking, riding an exercise bike, and sleeping and all other times of the day the heart rate is spot on for me. It definitely doesn't "drop" and stop reading. If anything, it would just spit out an inaccurate reading for a bit during strenuous exercise.

hi exactly the same i tightened the strap of the watch to have traces of it. And always inconsistencies with the heart sensor while running. In any case looking forward to having the next update.

How long did you have it track your workout? It seems the problem usually first starts after x minutes, and from there on it seems (to me) completely random when it starts working again (during the workout). I think i will try to see if i can spot it doing it, stop the workout mode, and see if it does HR instantly in "non-workout-mode"... I encourage others to try this too to gather some data.
*edit*: Reboot have been tried to no effect right before workout, but not during (which also kinda defeats the point), and there is no film on the watch.
Looking around, i found this thead about a similar problem one of the older watches: https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Galaxy-Watch/Galaxy-watch-heart-rate-sensor/td-p/389847/page/7
Going to try out some of the things: 1st: turning off diagnostics. Will keep you in the loop. *edit*: Nope didn't work.
Next: Turning off always on NR monitoring. *edit*: Nope!
Third: Turning off sensor permits for power saving. *edit*: Nope, also didn't work.

How long did you have it track your workout? It seems the problem usually first starts after x minutes, and from there on it seems (to me) completely random when it starts working again (during the workout). I run errands and I always have the problems. The heart rate sensor stops at times .... And when it resumes it completely wrong. With very random measurements.

My readings seems fine, once it, randomly, resumes. (Eg 140-160 when biking at a fast but not furious (hehe) pace)
Compared to the apple watch it's very finicky. I have to tighten the watch band ridiculously in order to get HR and ECG.
I think the Apple watch is a better overall product.
